Mending Her Heart: Chapter 1

The head girl walked up swiftly to the statue, and muttered the password, "Acid pops". The statue jumped out of the way and Hermione stepped on the step, and waited until she swirled up to the top of the staircase. She walked up to the big oak doors and knocked. "Come in", said a voice.

She walked into Dumbledore's office. All the portraits stared at her as she walked up to Dumbledore's desk. Something had to be wrong; the usual twinkle in his blue eyes was gone.

"You needed me sir?", She asked politely. She wondered why he didn't send the head boy, Draco Malfoy, in as well if there was a problem.

"Yes Miss Granger, please sit down. Would you care for a lemon drop?" He said offering her the bowl of lemon drops. She took one and popped it into her mouth. The sour lemon flavor swirled on her tongue.

"Thank you, sir", she muttered. Sitting down she looked up expectantly.

"You see I have got some bad news. The ministry has just informed me that your mother and father were killed by death eaters. I'm sorr..." Dumbledore said not getting a chance to finish his sentence as Hermione ran out of the room. Tears streaming down her face.

She ran through the corridors, not caring that everyone was seeing her cry. She ran past the smirking Slytherins, not caring if they made fun of her later.

She ran outside and leaned up against the castle walls. Hidden in the shadows she sobbed. She cried there for hours, sobs continued to wrack her body. What was the point of living now? What could she do without her parents? Eventually she cried herself to sleep, wondering why it had to be her.

She woke up cold in the middle of the night. Why was she outside? Man, was it cold and where was she? She reached in her pocket and found her wand.

"lumos", she whispered.

She was outside of Hogwarts. What the hell was she doing out here? Did she sleepwalk out here? Filch was going to kill her. That was when it all came crashing back on her. Her parents were dead.

Crying softly she picked herself off of the ground. She took heavy steps back to the head common rooms. She was nearly there; she was bound to get there without Filch catching her now. Not that she cared if he caught her. It didn't matter now, nothing did. She just didn't want to talk to the creepy man. She always thought that he was possessed or something. She turned the last turn that led to her corridor and she bumped into someone. She looked up into the eyes of Draco Malfoy, he looked concerned. Maybe because she was still crying. Why was she letting him see her cry? She ran past him, tears still streaming down her face. She said the password, and walked into the heads common room. She ran up the stairs to her room and flopped onto her bed and cried some more.

What happened to her? Draco Malfoy had never seen Hermione Granger cry. Her eyes were full of pain, hurt, heartache, and an emptiness that had never been there before. Something wasn't right. He turned around and walked back to the head common rooms. He went to bed thinking of her. He would watch her for a few days see if there was any change in her.

The next day he woke up and went to breakfast. Hermione was there, but all she was doing was pushing her food around her plate. Harry and Ron were talking to her, but she didn't seem to be paying attention to the conversation. Occasionally she would nod or say "Oh that's nice". Couldn't they see that something was wrong? She wasn't eating or talking. She didn't even look happy. She could have the words "I am sad" flashing over her head and they wouldn't have seen it.

Through out the day, Hermione didn't answer one question. She never raised her hand, nothing. Even Professor Snape was staring at her curiously. Something was wrong with Hermione Granger and he was determined to find out what. He planned to stop her outside of Transfiguration.

The bell rang and he grabbed his stuff quickly and raced to catch her before she could leave. That sadly, was not going to happen. He tripped on his shoelace and everything fell out of his bag. His ink splattered all over his face. Everyone was laughing at him as Hermione sped out of the door. He felt his face get hot. He couldn't imagine how red he must have been. Draco never had ink all over his face, it just didn't happen. He was not a clumsy person. (A/N imagine that, ink all over Draco's face. I think it is funny!)

I was headed back to the head common rooms for the night when I heard someone calling my name.

"Hermione, wait!", someone shouted.

I turned around to see Draco running up to me. He finally caught up to me. He was panting; his face slightly flushed from running, and some of his hair falling into his eyes.

"Hermione, look I know something is wrong with you. I don't know what, but you are not eating, you were crying last night, you didn't even answer any questions in class today."

"Why would a heartless bastard like you care?", she snapped pushing past him.

"Hermione, I just want to help. Please just tell me what his wrong," He shouted as ran to catch up with her quick pace.

She turned around tears of frustration in her eyes and whispered softly, "You want to know what's wrong, I will tell you what is wrong."
