Chapter 14
"Okay what to get first," Hermione said to herself as she stood in a crowd of busy shoppers in Hogsmead.
With the ball less than a week away she had to get her dress. Walking in a clothes store she looked around. Oh where was she to begin? With the shoes, the dress, or the mask? Where was everything in this store anyways?
While she was trying to decide which to direction to begin in first someone tapped her on the shoulder. She whipped around to see a Ravenclaw girl she had never seen before. With dark brown hair that fell down in soft waves down to her elbows. Her hazel eyes were full of happiness. The girl was a good deal shorter than Hermione; she must have been a year under her.
"Do you need a little help," she asked with her eyes glittering with laughter.
Hermione nodded her head and followed the girl past racks of clothes of various colors, sizes, and shapes. The girl somehow went through the maze of clothing and found the dresses.
"My name is Sonya and yours," the girl introduced.
"Hermione Granger", she replied.
So Sonya and Hermione searched for their dresses. Sonya quickly found her dress, which was a purple v-neck halter gown. Hermione on the other hand was not having an easy time picking out her gown.
"How about this one?", Sonya asked.
"No I don't like the color", she replied.
"This one?"
"No too plain"
"How about this one"
Hermione looked at what she was holding up. It was a dark blue silk gown that flowed down to the ground. It was strapless and had glitter across the bodice. Slightly pleated it draped down in the front and the back. Hermione gasped just looking at the gorgeous gown that seemed to flow.
"Wow it is perfect", she admitted as she gapped at the blue gown.
"Now lets go find our masks and shoes", Sonya said dragging her over to the accessories.
The girls where becoming quick friends and Hermione was feeling happier than she had in a long time. She had a new friend and a boyfriend. Harry and Ron didn't matter anymore. She wasn't going to let them bother her anymore. She never even thought about those jerks anymore. She was not the Hermione Granger they had always known anymore. Hermione Granger was dead and that didn't bother her at all.
They later walked out of the store weighed down by shopping bags. Laughing about a joke Sonya had told Hermione. Their eyes full of excitement and joy. They were friends now and were going to a ball in only a matter of days. Who wouldn't be happy?
"You have to let me come over to your common room to get ready for the ball," Sonya told her.
"Of course you have to come", Hermione grinned at her new friend.
So days passed and Hermione woke up to find it the day of the ball. She got up out of bed with a smile on her face. Today was going to be a good day. She just knew it. Something inside of her told her it was going to be. She would have fun at the ball and everything would go perfectly right today.
She skipped to the bathroom dressed in her Gryffindor robes. She quickly got ready and headed down to the Great Hall for breakfast. Sitting down next to Sonya at the Ravenclaw table she loaded her plate with pancakes drowned in maple syrup and toast covered in strawberry jam.
"Wow someone is hungry and they seem to be in a really good mood. What happened to you," Sonya asked.
"What do you mean," Hermione asked as she glanced up at Sonya.
"Well I never seen anyone eat so much," Sonya commented.
"No what do you mean what happened to me?"
"Well you haven't stopped smiling"
"Oh, I just have a good feeling about today"
Sonya seemed to think that was a good enough answer, as she didn't ask anymore about Hermione's mile-wide grin or anything else. They both chatted as they ate their breakfast.
"So are you staying at Hogwarts for the break," Sonya asked.
Hermione's grin vanished. She hadn't thought about that. She didn't even know where she was going to go when the school year was over. Maybe she would get a flat and job. She didn't know where she was going for the holidays. Nor what she would ever do for the holidays. Who would she celebrate Christmas with? Would she always be alone for the holidays? Would she have to celebrate every Christmas with Crookshanks?
"Hermione? Hello? Are you okay," asked waving a hand in front of Hermione's face.
"I am okay. I am fine just perfectly fine."
Sonya gave Hermione a strange look, "Are you sure? You looked a little dazed there. Like you were zoned out."
"Well anyways I am just going to stay here for the holidays," Hermione told her.
Sonya's eyes suddenly lit up. A grin that was as big as Hermione's was popped up on her face.
"Really? So am I. We can celebrate Christmas together", She grinned.
Yes Hermione had been right today was a going to be a good day. A very good day. Now she had someone to celebrate Christmas with. She wasn't going to be alone after all. She was glad she had Sonya as a friend.
Eight hours later Sonya was dragging Hermione to the common room to get ready.
"But we still have three hours before it starts," Hermione complained.
"Well guess what? It is going to take that long to get ready", Sonya explained.
Hermione sighed. She was afraid to find out what three hours of getting ready included. Sonya did seem to know what she was doing though. Well at least Hermione hoped she did know what she was doing. Hermione didn't for sure.
It was time to get ready for a ball. Hermione just hoped that Sonya wouldn't make her look like a disaster. She couldn't wait though to see what she would look like. She couldn't wait to dance with someone and silently wonder who was behind that mask. Though she knew deep down she would be hoping that it would be Draco.
