A/N: Welcome back, readers! Now that the other Titans have been established, we can delve into the real action of the story. I loved getting to make my own vision of the Titans that haven't been unveiled (yet…?) in the MonsterVerse. And to answer the question I know you all secretly have, yes, our friend Titanus Doug will appear later in the fanfic.
I do not own Godzilla. Nobody does. He comes and goes as he pleases.
Chapter One: Boston
THE RUINS OF BOSTON, MASSACHUSETTS
Godzilla burst through the cloud cover and crashed to the ground, sending out a tremendous shockwave around his impact site. King Ghidorah followed, landing next to his prone body and slowly approaching.
Suddenly, Mothra landed atop Godzilla's body, having just stabbed Rodan in the chest several blocks away. She chittered in a language meaningless to any humans nearby, but to Ghidorah's ears was heard as something along the lines of, "Go away, freak. You're not touching him on my watch."
Ghidorah was undeterred. She's weak, Ni observed. She may have taken down Rodan, but he didn't go down without a fight. Mosura will be no problem for us to fight.
My thoughts exactly, Ichi agreed. Time to kill them both.
I bet moth tastes disgusting, San absentmindedly thought.
Mothra took flight and headed for Ghidorah, and all three heads blasted electricity at her. She managed to swerve around them and raked her stinger up Ni's face as she flew overhead. About a hundred yards away, Mark, trying to repair the ORCA, looked up to see this happen. And a mysterious, unwelcome thought popped into his head, like a gopher bursting through the surface of a lawn: That wasn't supposed to happen.
Mothra wheeled in the sky and headed for Ghidorah once more, but made the mistake of focusing solely on his heads. One of his spiked tails thrashed her in the side, tearing her left wing membrane and causing her to start plummeting. When she was low enough, Ni and San each grabbed one of her wings and Ichi glared at her, his calculating eyes reflected hundreds of times in her compound eyes. Mothra chittered once more, Go to hell, and spat silk at Ichi's mouth. Ni let go of her left wing, as it was torn anyway, and blasted Mothra with his gravity beams, disintegrating her head in a matter of seconds.
"NO! MOTHRA!" Madison cried.
With a horrible crunch like the sound of a gigantic crab leg being broken, Ni and San tore off Mothra's wings; the former head roasted his wing, while San began consuming his raw. What have I told you?! Ichi mentally yelled at San. We ALWAYS cook our food before we eat it! Last time we ate food raw, thousands of years ago, we got food poisoning and that was the only reason Gojira was able to beat us! Ichi finally used a gravity beam to burn through the silk covering his mouth, then he and the other heads vaporized the rest of Mothra's body. All three turned to back to Godzilla.
"Got it!" Mark declared. The others turned to him and he continued, "I got the ORCA working."
"Let's get it out of here," Barnes said. "We can use it to draw Monster Zero away so Godzilla can recover."
"What about the part where Godzilla's still going to explode in less than five minutes?" Griffin asked. "If that's going to happen, shouldn't we make sure Monster Zero stays here and pray to God that Godzilla's explosion takes him down too?"
Meanwhile, Mothra's remains floated from the sky and landed not on Godzilla, but on Ghidorah. All three of his heads gave low rumbles as Mothra's energy coursed through them, supercharging them even more than after feasting on the entire city's electrical grid. His chest and necks pulsated yellow as he prepared another set of gravity beams, but this time Mothra's blue energy was present as well. The two colors alternated intensity until they finally merged into an ominous, radioactive green. Ghidorah leaned over Godzilla to blast him with the even stronger energy he now possessed.
"We need to get him away from Godzilla," Madison said. "If we don't, Ghidorah's gonna kill him!"
Mark activated the ORCA's alpha frequency and said, "Everyone, into the Osprey, now. We need to get out of here as soon as possible!"
But the plan didn't go as expected. Ni turned towards the ORCA, while Ichi and San remained concentrated on Godzilla, and all three released a gravity beam. As soon as this happened, the clouds seemed to explode and rained down hundreds of green lightning bolts of the remains of the city. Two struck the Osprey and it exploded, flinging shards of metal in all directions. Everyone ducked behind an impromptu barricade consisting of a tumble of bricks just in time to avoid the shrapnel.
Godzilla roared in pain and then was vaporized just like Mothra, further showering Ghidorah with his own energized remains.
"What the hell do we do now?!" Martinez yelled over the ORCA's pinging as it continued sending out its frequency. Behind them, Ghidorah's heads growled as they tried to pinpoint the frequency's source. "We've got no way out of here, and the only Titans who were helping us are dead!"
Mark shut off the ORCA, "This isn't doing any good now, it's just drawing him to us."
Barnes called into his intercom device, "Foster, this is Barnes. We need am immediate extraction – our Osprey's busted, and Godzilla and Mothra…won't be of any more help to us."
Foster replied, "Our scans show that Monster Zero's power just went through the roof. We can't risk bringing the Argo back around – we barely managed to escape last time. Get as far away from Monster Zero as possible, and once you're far enough out we'll send in an Osprey to extract you. But between everything that's happened, we only have one Osprey left. If this one is destroyed too, that's it."
"Send it," Barnes said.
"You'll have to move fast," Foster continued, "Four more Titans just appeared on the radar about twenty miles to the west: the MUTO Queen, Scylla, Behemoth, and Methuselah. They're not moving fast, but it can't be denied that they're heading in your direction."
"Got it. We'll hurry. Over and out." Barnes shut off the intercom and relayed the instructions to the others, then said, "We should head south, away from Monster Zero and the other incoming Titans."
"Let's stay low and hide behind any debris we can," Emma suggested, and the others nodded in agreement.
Behind them, Ghidorah's three heads roared in triumph. We have done it, Ichi thought. The other alpha is dead. Our reign will forevermore be undisputed – let anyone who tries to contest it look on the corpses of Gojira and Mosura and quail in fear. We shall raze the surface of this planet, transform it to our liking, and rule unchallenged forever!
Ni, for all his observance, was captivated by the thrill of being the planet's new alpha. Perhaps later events would have happened differently, or never happened altogether, had he maintained his position of vigilance. Ichi was the mastermind, the artist who toiled for hours using a palette of machinations to paint a masterpiece of global domination. San was the third wheel, the distraction, his unpredictability only useful for baffling enemies. Frankly, Ichi might have bitten San's head off long ago if not for his regenerative abilities making this impossible. But Ni was the watcher, Ichi's (quite literal) right-hand man, someone standing by to ensure no annoying flies landed in the artist's palette. In this one moment of weakness, Ni let his guard down, and it was this mere stroke of luck that allowed Mark, Emma, Madison, Barnes, Griffin, Martinez, and the others to escape Ghidorah's attack radius. As they were fleeing, before the Osprey even arrived to transport them back to the Argo, Ghidorah took flight, returning to his nest in the stormy atmosphere above Washington, D.C.
THE U.S.S. ARGO - ABOVE THE NORTH ATLANTIC
The Osprey made a rough landing in the Argo's hangar, whose doors were still hanging open after the battle over the Gulf of Mexico the previous day. Everyone got out headed to the bridge, where they were greeted by Foster, Coleman, Chen, and Stanton. Once they had all reunited, Chen asked the question on everyone's mind, "So what do we do now?"
Mark thought for a moment, then said, "We, ourselves, haven't been able to harm Ghidorah. The closest anyone came was Godzilla, here and at Isla de Mara, and for all we know he would've beat Ghidorah there if the Oxygen Destroyer hadn't been fired. Only other Titans even stand the slightest chance against him."
"Are there any other than Godzilla and Mothra that didn't respond to Ghidorah's call?" Emma asked.
"Hmm," Stanton pulled up a global map and examined it, "Well, Kong didn't come. He tried to get off Skull Island, but, interestingly enough, didn't show aggression towards anyone while doing so, like the other Titans have. But obviously he can't escape, so now it looks like he's back to just hanging around, probably scratching his ass and eating God-knows-what disgusting stuff like usual."
"What about him?" Coleman asked, pointing to Outpost 77 in Wyoming. "Or…the other one?"
"What other one?" Mark asked.
"Those two?!" Stanton exclaimed. "Are you outta your goddamn mind? We're not asking them to help us!"
"Why not?" Madison asked. "Who are they? If they didn't answer Ghidorah, they don't want him as the alpha either."
"Because," Foster pointed to the map, "this Titan out in Wyoming, Abaddon, likely didn't reply because he has some trick of his own up his sleeve. He's one of the most insidious Titans we've encountered. He may have been physically unable to escape, given that he is in the most secure Monarch Outpost we have established, but the fact that he didn't even attempt escape raises some serious questions for us."
"He probably didn't bow down to Monster Zero because he wants to be Monster Zero," Barnes said. "The next alpha."
"Is that possible?" Emma asked. "Was he another ancient rival to Godzilla?"
"Not that we know of," Chen replied, "but we have found evidence of situations – very rare ones, but situations nonetheless – where an alpha's position was usurped by a lesser Titan, and the others wholly accepted the usurper as the new alpha. Perhaps that is what Abaddon seeks to do."
"Right," Foster said. "And then if he beat Monster Zero, we'd most likely be back in this same situation, with the alpha Titan trying to destroy the planet."
"What about Kong?" Madison asked. "Can he help?"
"Unfortunately, we doubt it," Foster said. "Kong is another alpha, but Ghidorah would have many advantages over him in combat."
"If Kong's another alpha," Mark asked, "then why hasn't Ghidorah gone after him yet? To take out the last real threat to his reign."
"That's confused us too."
"Well, I have a theory about that," Coleman interjected. "Skull Island is constantly surrounded by a huge thunderstorm, even stronger than the hurricane that Monster Zero has created over D.C. When he was heading to Isla de Mara, the hurricane interfered with us being able to identify him. So a similar phenomenon could possibly be happening at Skull Island, where the storm interferes with outside Titans identifying Kong as an alpha, or even…his presence at all."
"So Ghidorah might not even know he exists?" Chen clarified.
"Exactly. But the second we removed Kong from Skull Island, Monster Zero would, in all likelihood, come for him."
"Not to mention that, as I said, Kong would be at a severe disadvantage," Foster continued. "Both he and Monster Zero can fight on land, but Kong can't fly, or breathe gravity beams. The only place Monster Zero has a disadvantage in battles is underwater, which, unfortunately, is also where Kong appears to be at his weakest. That's the only reason he didn't leave Skull Island."
"You said three Titans didn't answer Ghidorah's call," Emma said. "That's Abaddon, Kong, and someone else – what about the third one?"
"We barely know anything about him," Stanton replied. "He's deep underneath the temple of Gobekli Tepe in Turkey, but years ago, the Monarch agent who first discovered his presence told us to leave the site alone and absolutely not risk awakening the Titan by building an Outpost there."
"Who is he?" Mark asked. "Can we go talk to him?"
"His name was David Lind. And unfortunately, no, we can't talk to him. He died ten years ago on an expedition to try to reach the Hollow Earth. We could pay his brother Nathan a visit, though. I don't know if David ever told him anything more than he told us. But he's in Philadelphia, which brings us awfully close to Monster Zero's hurricane."
Suddenly, an alarm blared throughout the bridge. "What the hell is that?" Emma asked.
"Low fuel alert," Foster replied. "We now have approximately five hours of fuel remaining before the Argo falls out of the sky. We have to land somewhere soon."
"Where?" Martinez asked. "The air seems to be the safest place. As soon as we land, sooner or later one of the Titans is gonna find us."
"What about the Hollow Earth?" Stanton asked. "Some – including me – believe that all the Titans have an…instinct to return there, and that that's where they all came from. But if Monster Zero really isn't from around here, he wouldn't have that instinct or know the Hollow Earth exists. He wouldn't come after us."
"But we can't get there safely," Chen said. "The gravitational inversion would kill us, just like it killed Dr. Lind."
"What went wrong? We were able to get down there in the submarine just fine," Mark said.
"The team encountered some sort of gravitational reversal," Foster said, "where the gravity switched from pulling them towards the center of the earth to pulling them in the opposite direction. The sudden change instantaneously crushed everyone we sent down."
"But we got into the Hollow Earth without anything like that happening to us. Do some of the tunnels leading there have a more…gradual gravity shift?"
"And therein lies the problem I've been puzzling over since we went down there," Stanton said. "The gravitational shift yesterday when we went after Godzilla was very mild. Abrupt, sure, but not strong enough to crush someone. Here's my thinking: the tunnel Lind went into was selected because our scans indicated that it hadn't been used by Titans in a long time, so there wasn't the risk of having an...unpleasant encounter with any of them during the expedition. But what if that's because something happened that strengthened the gravity there and the Titans sensed that the tunnel had become impossible to safely pass through, and simply…stopped using it?"
"That's…actually a plausible idea," Foster said. "So if we can find a tunnel that is currently in use, that one would more likely be safe."
"I like that all of you are suddenly putting more stock in what I say. Took you long enough."
"Well, you were right about the existence of the Hollow Earth. We'll give you a chance. Besides, it's not like anyone else has a better idea…right?"
Nobody spoke.
"As I expected," Foster said. "So, this leaves only the question of what Hollow Earth tunnel we should enter."
"The closest tunnel's the one up in Lake Erie that the Leviathan sometimes uses," Barnes said, examining another map of the world. "The tunnel looks big enough for the submersibles aboard the Argo to fit through. And the Leviathan's currently in the Indian Ocean, so we won't have to worry about running into him."
"I've got an idea," Emma said.
"Are we really taking suggestions from the woman who got us into this situation in the first place?" Foster asked.
Emma sighed, "I'm sorry – I'm trying to make up for it now."
"You can't make up for the fact that the Titans you helped unleash are now responsible for over a million deaths around the world."
Madison stood up and faced Foster, "My mom didn't mean for things to turn out like this. Give her a chance; besides, we're kinda short on ideas, so I'd think any idea would be worth considering."
Foster said, "Continue, Dr. Russell."
Emma said, "We could head north through Canada, then cut back south once we're west of Monster Zero's storm. If we land the Argo near Lake Erie, we could take the Osprey and head to Pennsylvania to pay Dr. Lind a quick visit. Then we'd head back to Lake Erie and enter the Hollow Earth tunnel. Hide out down there until we have a plan to stop Monster Zero."
"Well, that brings up another problem," Stanton said. "You know how clocks run slightly faster on a mountaintop than at sea level? Well, the closer you are to any large source of gravity, the slower time runs. Take that slight difference from a mountain to sea level and amplify it, like, a hundredfold, and that'll be the time difference between the surface and the Hollow Earth. We can't afford to spend too long down there."
"The longer we're down there, the faster everything goes to hell in a handbasket up here," Mark said.
"Exactly."
"Then we won't take any more time than necessary down there," Foster said. "I guess we're heading to Lake Erie."
"It'll take about an hour to get there," Griffin said, "Until then, everyone just sit back and enjoy the ride."
"Well, I for one am starving, so I vote we eat on the way there," Stanton said, getting up and heading for the back of the bridge. "I'll see what we have in the galley, a.k.a. an industrial-size freezer."
"How about waffles?" Madison suggested.
"Waffles…uh," Stanton turned to the right at the end of the hall behind the bridge and called back, "We've only got plain Eggo. Everyone always eats all the other flavors first."
Madison shrugged, "That's fine. Plain's always been my favorite anyway."
THE U.S.S. ARGO - ABOVE QUEBEC, CANADA
Shortly after everyone had finished eating, another alarm blared in the bridge. "What now?" Martinez asked. "That can't be the emergency fuel alert already."
"No," Coleman said. "It's an alert. The Boneyard's been destroyed by Sekhmet."
"Ah, shit," Barnes groaned.
"What's the Boneyard?" Madison asked.
"Its official name is Monarch Outpost 98, but nobody calls it that anymore. It's in Ashkelon, Israel, and it's where we store the fossils of any dead Titans we find around the globe. And while Monster Zero has regenerative powers, Sekhmet is the only Titan we know of with powers of resurrection."
"Monster Zero sent Sekhmet there to resurrect them all," Chen gasped.
"Great, so now they're gonna add to the list of attractions in Ghidorah's House of Horrors," Stanton said. "Margygr, Anguirus, Baragon…all of them."
"All of them rampaging through the Middle East is just another reason to make heading to Gobekli Tepe nothing short of a last resort," Foster said.
"So could Sekhmet's powers be used to bring back Godzilla and…Mothra?" Madison asked.
"I suppose it's possible," Chen answered, "but we don't know for certain. All of the Titans in the Boneyard consist of complete skeletons for Sekhmet to reanimate, but Monster Zero, he completely vaporized Godzilla. As for Mothra, before she headed to Boston she laid an egg in the cave where she cocooned herself. When she died, her spirit would have entered the egg to be…reincarnated, as has happened for centuries with her. Not exactly. The creature that hatches from the egg in a few years – assuming it remains safe in that time – will be an exact copy of the original Mothra, with all her memories."
Madison appeared slightly relieved to hear this.
"What about helping them? At the Boneyard?" Mark asked.
"Our resources are spread desperately thin as it is," Foster said, "trying to round up all of the Titans Monster Zero unleashed. Right now, our best chance seems to be visiting Dr. Lind in Philadelphia."
"How do you know he's still there in all this chaos with the Titans?" Madison asked.
"No Titans have gone anywhere near Philadelphia, and it isn't a city that's been evacuated…yet. Let's just hope that doesn't change before we get there."
A ray of sunlight broke through the mixture of clouds and smoke choking the atmosphere, and for the briefest of moments it shone of the front of the Argo, before vanishing once more.
A/N: I hope you don't mind that I sort of retconned the rules with the Hollow Earth gravity inversion as established in Godzilla vs. Kong. I couldn't seem to find any information anywhere that explained how they got past that to reach the Hollow Earth in King of the Monsters, so I made up the explanation in here. Not to mention I needed a way to get them down there without use of the HEAVs.
I'd always love to receive a review. I had a lot of stuff I wanted to establish in this chapter, and in the end had to cut some stuff and save it as surprises for later on. Somewhere in all that, I might've overlooked a plot hole or two, so if you come across something that doesn't make sense, please let me know about it. Stay tuned for the next chapter – the adventure's just getting started!
