Chapter 22

Alice wasn't in the next class they had together.

When entering her last class Bella spotted Jacob. He chose to sit in the back again. It was not hard to find a seat near him, people were keeping their distance. The one kid that sat closest to him moved the desk over to be as far away as possible. Jacob did not seem bothered by this.

"Hey." She greeted him.

He gave a small nod.

Bella needed to appease Edward. He Wouldn't be swayed about Jacob being too dangerous for her to be around. She forced herself to believe his overreaction would calm down, and once it did he would see he was wrong and how ridiculous this whole thing was.

"So, I know you're supposed to drive me home, but I want to go to my boyfriend's house. Since he has a car I don't need a ride."

Her face was burning and she refused to look at him.

"Okay." She heard him mumble.

Not wanting Edward to see her with Jacob, she made an excuse and hid in the girls room once again. When she thought she gave Jacob enough time to leave she collected herself and walked out of the school.

Her mouth fell open when she saw Edward standing in front of Jacob in the middle of the parking lot. A crowd was gathering. It looked like they were anticipating a fight.

She ran over shoving herself between them. Facing Edward she pushed her hands against his chest.

"What are you doing." She demanded.

His nose wrinkled and his lips turned up in a sneer. Then he forced his face to relax.

"I was just saying hello." He told her.

She heard a snort of disgust come from behind her. Looking over her shoulder she could see Jacob scowling.

He leaned forward and spoke low enough that only she heard "Sure about that ride?" She nodded. "Okay, see you at home."

She turned to look at him confused. He was already walking away. Edward grabbed her upper arm and was pulling her toward his car. Her eyes were still focused on Jacob, she was about to turn away when Lauren ran up to him.

"Hey, Jake. I missed the bus. Can I get a ride?"

Jacob grunted. Lauren ran to the passenger side of his truck and got in. Bella was being shoved into the passenger seat of Edward's car. He slammed the door before going around to his side.

Edward drove erratically all the way to his house. Bella begged him to slow down terrified of crashing. Even when she was gripping his shirt sleeve and was almost screaming he acted like she wasn't even there.

When they got to his house, that all changed. Edward got out of the car. He was in front of the passenger door before she could open it. He swung it open and grabbed her by the back of her jacket. He pulled her out of the car, into the house, up the stairs, into his room, and then practically threw her at the bed. She landed on the floor banging her head on the bed frame.

She looked up to see Edward taking off his belt and holding it up over his shoulder ready to swing. She cried out and on instinct curled into a ball covering her head with her arms. This only angered him further. He knelt over her using his other hand to grip her hair and pull her head back. He forced her to look at him.

Spittle flew out of his mouth as he hissed in her face. "What did he say to you?"

He gave her hair a yenk when she didn't answer.

"Who?" She cried.

"Don't play stupid Isabella. You know exactly who. That murdering monster you were so cosy with today."

Jacob. She didn't dare fight against him right now.

"He said he was going home." Her voice shook.

"Liar!" He screamed.

The belt flew at her. She squeezed her eyes tight anticipating the pain. Instead of the sting of the belt she felt a burning sensation on her scalp. She opened her eyes to find Jasper with one arm around Edwards neck and Edwards arm pinned behind his back. Emmitt was rushing in behind him. He grabbed Edward's wrist somehow forcing him to release Bella's hair.

The two boys wrestled Edward away from her. He bared his teeth, his wide eyes fixated on her as he struggled against their hold. She felt small gentle hands grab her arms, lifting her up and guiding her away from the chaotic scene.

"Bella, Bella, you need to breathe." Alice's voice echoed.

Bella felt a cool cloth wiping at her face. She realized she was in Alice's room sitting on her bed. A blanket was thrown over her shoulders.

"Bella." She heard a soft voice. "Try to drink this."

Rosalie was holding out a glass of water. She took it with shaky hands.

"Rose, You don't have to be here." Alice told her.

"I'm alright Alice."

Rosalie rubbed Bellas arm. Had the girl ever touched her before? Rosalie wasn't very affectionate. The only person she would get close enough to touch was Emmett.

In the back of her mind Bella knew she was thinking of everything but what just happened in Edward's room. She couldn't face it. It wasn't real. She focused on her surroundings. Through blurry eyes she looked at an object, thinking about the shape, the color, its function. Then moved on to the next.

A deep voice interrupted her concentration. "Rosie, baby, why are you in here?"

"I wanted to help."

"That little shit put you through enough today, you don't need this too." The big man wrapped his arms around the blonde.

"I'm alright now. I can do this." She rubbed his shoulder.

He kissed her forehead then they turned their attention on Bella. Alice came around and stood in front of Emmett. The girl barely came up to his chest.

Bella could remember the first time she saw them. She thought they all looked so different. Looking at Emmitt and Alice now she could see she was wrong. Alice was just a small feminine version of her brother. They had their fathers blue eyes and everything else was their mother. Edward was the opposite except his hair was something in between. Edward. She squeezed her eyes shut and shook her head.

"Stop!" Rosalie chastised. "You're making it worse." She wasn't yelling at Bella

"I'll talk to her. Rose, you go calm Emmitt down." Alice spoke quietly. "Bella, Look at me. I am so sorry, I should have seen this coming. Jasper says I put blinders on when it comes to Edward." She was babbling. "How long has this been happening?"

Bella shook her head again. "What?" She croaked out.

"The abuse Bella, how long has Edward been hitting you?"

Bella shot up from the bed. "No! Never, he has never hit me." She stubbornly refused to acknowledge that he was about to today.

"Bella,"

"No, Alice. He has never hit me." She said vehemently.

"Okay." Alice's lips thinned.

Over the next hour Alice pampered Bella. She helped her wash her face, brushed her hair, gave her a manicure that included a hand massage, and any other relaxing activity she could think of. Emmitt, Rosalie, and eventually Jasper, all came in to see how she was doing.

Bella was getting sick of her friend's concerned looks. She laid down in Alice's bed and pretended to fall asleep. She heard Alice sneak out of the room and didn't bother getting up.

She heard the door open again. Assuming It was Alice coming back in she concentrated on keeping her breathing even. She wasn't expecting to feel his touch. She jumped out of the bed and flattened herself against the wall.
