Chapter 36
Bella quietly followed her father through the halls of the hospital. They arrived at a door on the second floor that read: Dr. Olivia Scott. Psychiatrist.
Going through the door Bella thought she would find an office. Instead, she found herself standing in a small waiting room area. Straight across from the door she walked in was another door. To one side of the doors, there were blue, plastic chairs. They were pushed up against each wall in sets of four, with a coffee table in the middle that held magazines. On the other side were a play area for kids and a reception desk. Charlie told Bella to take a seat, then walked over to the desk.
The secretary nodded her head and then picked up the phone. "Dr. Scott, the police chief is here to see you."
Almost immediately a small thin woman with long black hair and olive skin stepped out from behind the mystery door, Bella felt safe to assume that was her office. The petite woman invited Charlie into her space.
Bella sat in one of the chairs and brought her legs up wrapping her arms around her knees. After about ten minutes Charlie came out of the office and Bella was asked to come in.
"Hello Bella, I'm Dr. Scott." The woman introduced herself.
She wasn't as short as Bella, she wasn't much taller either. Her long thick mane flowed down past her waist. It reminded Bella of black satin.
"Please choose the place you would be most comfortable to sit."
The room was broken into four sections. In front of a row of windows sat a desk with two chairs across from it. There was a wall covered with cubed bookcases. Each squared hole held something different. There were pictures, fidget toys, koosh balls, stress squeezers, dolls, art supplies, books, puppets, and small arts and crafts projects. A dollhouse sat in front of the bookshelves. Closest to that wall there were four bean bag chairs, and a round table surrounded by kitchen chairs, against the wall by the door was a couch and two chairs that looked like they belonged to a living room set. Bella chose to sit there since it was the closest.
She sat on the edge of the couch and the doctor sat across from her in one of the chairs.
"So," Dr. Scott started. "I hear you had quite the weekend. Would you like to tell me about that?"
"No," Bella answered.
"Okay, is there anything you would like to talk about?"
"No."
"Are you sure? What you went through is very traumatic, and your father is worried about you."
"I'm fine." Bella insisted.
"Okay, then we have some time. Would you like to paint or draw, perhaps you want to pick something from a shelf to play with?"
Bella imagined if she was a snarky person like Lauren she would say something like: Are you a shrink or an art teacher? As it was she just shook her head.
"Then will you play a game with me?"
"Like what?"
"I will say a word and you say the first thing that comes to mind."
Bella shrugged her shoulders.
"Let's start with the word, ``Child."
"Adult," Bella answered quickly.
"Boy."
"Girl."
"Dog."
"Cat."
"Elephant."
"Large."
"Mother."
This answer didn't come as quickly, after a moment Bella responded with, "Friend."
"Father."
This one came faster. "Parent."
"Boyfriend."
Throughout the game, Bella kept her eyes on her knees but with this word they shot up to the doctor.
"I don't want to play anymore."
"Why not. It's just a word, and you're fine. Right?" The doctor pushed. "I'll tell you what. You say this last word and we can call it a day. One word and you won't have to talk to me again today."
"Tyrant." Bella jumped from her seat and ran out of the room.
A startled Charlie jumped out of his chair and grabbed Bella before she could run out the next door.
Struggling against him Bella screamed. "No! I want to go! I want to leave!"
The doctor came out of her office and tried to give Bella a pill and a bottle of water. "You don't have to run. It's all over. Take this and have a seat with your father." She directed calmly.
Charlie guided Bella into a chair and tried to coax her into taking the pill.
Jake took the seat next to her. Bella wrinkled her brow, when did he get here?
"Hey Bells, tough session, huh." He spoke softly. "It's okay. You just have to breathe." He pointed at the pill Charlie was now holding. "That thing will help calm you down if you want it."
Bella's nerves were so on edge she couldn't form a clear thought. She reached out a shaking hand for the pill then popped it in her mouth and swallowed it.
Once Bella was calmed down, the doctor turned her attention to Jacob. "Jacob, why don't you step into my office so we could have a talk."
"Oh come on doc, We just talked on Saturday."
"A lot has happened since then."
He glanced over at Bella as if he was reluctant to leave her.
"Go," Charlie commanded.
After Jacob went into the office Charlie started to pace back and forth. He rubbed the back of his neck, pinched the bridge of his nose, and ran his hands through his hair.
Bella pulled her legs up and rested her chin on her knees, watching her father's frantic behavior. She couldn't help but think: someone should give him a pill.
By the time Jacob came out, Charlie had sat down and stood back up to pace at least five times. Though somber Jacob didn't look any worse for wear.
Dr. Scott gave Charlie a soft smile. "Chief Swan, will you please join me." She said, before heading back to her office.
Standing in front of Bella, Jacob reached out and took her hand. She hadn't noticed that she was chewing on her nails until he pulled her hand away from her mouth. Without letting go, he sat next to her. Examining her hand he ran his fingers softly over the ragged nails she just had in her mouth. She grimaced at the action, but didn't say anything, nor did she pull her hand away. She liked the feeling of his hands, warm and gentle yet somehow sturdy, secure.
"Are you feeling any better?" He asked.
He kept his eyes focused on their hands. For some reason that made it easier for Bella to talk.
"I don't know. I still don't want to be here, but I don't feel as frantic to get away anymore." She confessed.
He nodded his head.
Wanting to get the focus off of her she asked. "Why were you here Saturday?"
He pushed her hand open and was now tracing the lines on her palm. Shrugging, he answered "Standard appointment."
"So, you come here every Saturday?" He nodded. "Why?"
He looked up into her face. "Do you really think they would have let me out of the nuthouse and not make me see a shrink on the outside?"
"Oh, right." When he looked away again she asked. "Do you think maybe we could talk about that sometime?"
"The nuthouse?"
"Yeah, no, I mean all of it. What led up to it, your time there. What happened and how you felt when you came out."
"Maybe, if we could talk about you too."
"What about me?"
"All of it, what brought you to Forks," He abruptly stopped talking.
Bella followed his gaze to the door and gasped at who was standing there.
