Chapter 37

Rosalie Hale and Alice Cullen stood in the doorway. Alice looked horrible, she was even paler than normal, wearing a pair of sweatpants and an oversized sweatshirt, she leaned heavily on the other girl.

When Alice's eyes met Bella's the tiny girl stumbled her way over. Falling on her knees in front of Bella, she cried. "Bella, I'm so sorry. It's all my fault. I'm so sorry."

Bella's mouth fell open as her hands fluttered in front of her unsure what to do. Rosalie rushed over and crouched down by Alice.

"Ali, come on sweetie, let's get up off the floor." Rosalie coaxed.

"No! She needs to know. I'm sorry. I didn't know he would become like that. It's just, in the past, if he had a girlfriend, he stopped trying to control everything I did. He would be too focused on her to care about me. He left me alone for a little while, So I could have a little peace. I was being selfish. I shouldn't have pushed you into a relationship with him. I swear he never got that bad before. Maybe a little controlling, but they left him when he started that, or sometimes he lost interest in them. He never had a relationship that lasted more than a couple of months."

"Alice," Jacob said gently, putting his hand on her shoulder. "Now is not a good time to talk about this. You should do as blondie says."

Rosalie scowled at him. He smiled innocently back at her.

Alice allowed Rosalie to pull her up in a chair across from them.

Jacob glanced at the door then asked the newcomers. "Where is he?"

He draped an arm around Bella as if to protect her from the answer.

Rosalie smiled reassuringly at them. "Gone. I'm sure by now he is out of the state."

Bella shoved her hands between her knees to try to stop them from shaking. "Where?" She croaked, but the word was barely intelligible.

Jacob's arm tightened around her as he asked in her place. "Where did he go?"

Alice stared straight ahead but it was like she was looking at nothing as she droned. "Dad and Em are escorting him to a special hospital where he will be evaluated."

Rosalie announced, "Esme, Alice, and I are staying here with Jasper."

"How is Jasper?" Jake asked.

Alice opened her mouth to answer but she started to sob when she tried.

Rosalie rubbed her back. "He is in intensive care. He suffered a punctured lung. As long as he doesn't get an infection the doctors think he will make a full recovery."

The phone on the desk beeped, gaining their attention.

After hanging up the receiver the secretary addressed Rosalie. "Miss Hail, Dr. Scott apologizes, your appointment is a little delayed. She will be with you as soon as she can."

"Actually, can I give my appointment to Alice Cullen, or at least share it with her."

The woman wrinkled her brow in confusion and opened her mouth to speak but seemed to think better of it picking up the phone instead.

"Dr. Scott said as long as you're comfortable Miss Cullen will be welcome to join you."

Rosalie smiled at the woman.

"Your appointment?" Bella seemed to have found her voice again.

"Yes, I come every Monday, Wednesday, and Friday."

"Why so often?" Bella asked in surprise.

Rosalie looked at her like she was stupid. "I was gang-raped, and then my parents abandoned me, I'm fucked up"

"Shit," Jacob muttered so low Bella doubted the other girls heard him.

Before anything more could be said the office door opened and Charlie came out. Turning to the secretary he said. "I need to make an appointment for tomorrow."

"Make that, two appointments, Sadie." The doctor said coming up behind Charlie.

Charlie grumbled something but otherwise did not protest.

Charlie motioned for Bella and Jake to go into the hall. "Jake, the doc said you can go back to school today or take the rest of the day off, your choice. Bella, you need to take a few days off. She wants to see you every day this week."

"Why?" She cried.

"Because she said so, and she's the professional," Charlie demanded

sounding like he was at the end of his rope.

"Is it okay with you if I take the rest of the day off?" Jake asked Charlie.

"That's fine," Charlie grumbled. "Your dad wants to talk to you anyway." He gestured at Bella. "I just don't know what the hell to do with you. I have to go to work and the doc thinks it's best if you have someone close by."

"I could keep her with me," Jake suggested.

"No, you need time with your dad, plus I'm sure that the talk you two are going to have is a man-to-man one, about your guest last night."

"Fuck." Jake swore.

"Language!" Charlie chastised. He rubbed the back of his neck looking at Bella. "I guess I could take you with me."

Bella didn't want to go to work with Charlie, nor did she want to go home, she didn't want to interrupt Jake's time with his father, but where else could she go?

"I could go with Jake and just stay in the twins' room." She suggested.

"No." Her father refused. Although he seemed to be dissatisfied with his decision, He didn't want anything to intrude upon Billy and Jake's time alone right now.

When they got to the parking lot Charlie still looked unhappy with his decision to take his daughter to work with him. They were making their way over to their vehicles when Charlie stopped short.

"Sue!" He shouted across the parking lot.

A beautiful woman with long black hair and bronzed skin looked over at them.

"Wait by the car." He told them as he hurried over to the woman.

"Who's that?" Bella asked Jake.

"Sue Clearwater. She's Harry's wife."

Bella remembered Charlie and Billy once leaving a note saying they went to Harry's. She guessed this, Harry was the same one. After a few moments of animated conversation, Charlie came running back to the car.

"Sue is on her way home. You will be going with her. I'm sure she will appreciate it if you help her around the house." He told his daughter.

Bella's mouth popped open. She didn't even know this woman Charlie was pawning her off to. This was behavior she would expect from Renee, not Charlie. She looked at Jake pleading for some kind of help.

Putting a hand on her back he told Charlie, "I'll bring her over and introduce them."

Charlie nodded his head and said he would try not to take too long at the station.

"It's okay Bells, Sue's very nice," Jake told her. "I will come by as soon as my dad is done lecturing me."

"I don't want to interrupt your time with your dad."

"You won't. If I don't come to see you, I will just end up holed up in my room."

"Okay," Bella said, feeling better at the thought she would not be alone with this stranger for too long.

Jake placed Bella in between him and Sue. He quickly introduced them and swiftly walked away before any real greetings could be made.

Sue watched him walk away with a sad smile. "He used to be so loving." she mused out loud before looking down at her keys in her hand.

Bella could tell Sue missed the boy she once knew. She wondered if Sue had given up hope of ever seeing him like that again.
