Hello! A new chapter after a month and a half (almost two months whoops) of silence but I finally got my life sorted enough to have wifi to post chapters on here! I've been able to work on the later chapters of this story but I also have a couple of other stories I've been working on that I'm going to start posting in the near future but they need to be completed and edited first. Phantom Hotel is once again my main focus though so new chapters will be posted but I'm not sure if I'll be able to post them as regularly as once a week since I'm getting to the chapters that are going to need to be completely rewritten!
Anywho on to the story!
Chapter 11: Little Sister
After they finished their time together on the roof, they both retired to bed and the next morning, Mavis found herself busying herself with some work helping some of the guests checking into the hotel. She wasn't sure if Danny had woken up yet but after a couple of hours, Johnny had come over and started to hang out with her at the concierge counter during her downtime.
"So, I've been working on a new part of the song. Some of the guys told me about how your dad used to tear it up back in the day and I've been trying to see if I could get Drac to sing. Frank and them told me that he used to be awesome!"
"I don't think you'll have much luck, Johnny. I doubt my dad has sung since before I was born." Mavis laughed.
Johnny only gave a shrug, looking back at a notebook he had been scribbling in when the vampiress was distracted by a guest.
"Excuse me?" A voice asked from behind her.
Mavis turned to see what looked to be a teenage girl in a blue hoodie with a red shirt, a red beanie and some black sneakers, who looked at least 18 standing behind her. Her long black hair was tied up in a ponytail and she had a dark blue backpack slung over one shoulder.
"I'm looking for my older brother. A ghost with white hair and green eyes. I was told he came here with our parents. Maybe you've seen him?" She asked. "His name is Danny. Sometimes goes by Phantom?"
"The ghost dude here is your brother?" Johnny asked, straightening at the appearance of the girl. "I didn't even know ghosts could have brothers!"
"Yeah." The girl laughed. "Ours is a bit of a complicated situation."
"By the way, I'm-" she started, holding out a hand to shake.
"Danielle?"
The ghost boy watched as the three of them turned to him. Mavis noted that his glow had fully returned. She also noticed how Johnny was still looking at the girl, who smiled and grabbed Danny in a hug.
"Hey!" She laughed, releasing him from the hug. Danny was also sporting a wide smile at the appearance of his supposed sister.
"What brought you to this hotel? How'd you even find out about it?" He asked.
"I went to Halloween town to visit you but you weren't there." Danielle explained, setting a hand on her hip. "Mayor told me that you, Jack and Sally had gone to a hotel in Transylvania so I came looking for you. I hope you've been staying out of trouble."
Her tone was teasing as Danny rolled his eyes in a typical brotherly fashion.
"Yeah, I'm the troublemaker. Keep telling yourself that." He shook his head but his eyes showed just how happy he was to see his sister.
"This is new." Danielle pointed out, tugging on the sleeve of her brother's black hoodie.
"Aunt Sally kinda went wild and made a whole new wardrobe for me for the trip." He chuckled, rubbing the back of his neck. "I'll never understand why you like traveling so much though. The drive here was so boring."
Danielle laughed and Mavis swore she saw Johnny's eyes sparkle.
"Join me on one of my trips sometime and you'll see how a trip is supposed to be." Danielle smiled before turning back to Mavis and once again holding out her hand. "We haven't been properly introduced. Hi. I'm Danielle. You can call me Ellie. I also go by Boo in my ghost form."
Mavis took her hand and shook it gently while Johnny seemed to be buzzing in excitement at the introduction.
"I'm Mavis and this is Johnny."
"Johnnystein." The redhead corrected, stepping forward and holding the sides of his coat with a proud grin.
"Johnnystein?" Danielle asked before giving him a confused look that disappeared when her brother set a hand on her shoulder and shook his head.
"Or yano, you can just call me Johnny..." The red head said, rubbing the back of his neck shyly.
Danielle nodded, smiling softly.
"So you're a ghost?" Johnny asked. "You don't look like one."
"Well, I'm only half ghost." Ellie explained, her eyes flashing a venomous green like how Danny's eyes were. "I'm half dead."
'Half dead? I wonder what happened to her… Was it anything like Danny's death?' Mavis thought before she was pulled from her thoughts
"You're only half dead!? That's so awesome!" He exclaimed.
The girl giggled slightly before running a hand through her hair.
"Well, you're a stein, right? Aren't you like a reanimated corpse? Technically, you're half dead too." She explained, laughing at the look of realization passing over the red head's face.
"Whoaaa…."
"So how long are you planning on hanging out here, El?" Danny asked, catching his sister's attention.
"Not long. Maybe like a week. Mayor told me you guys were only planning on staying here a couple weeks so I figured I'd just enjoy some vacay time with you guys."
"Well careful." The ghost boy chuckled. "The owner told Aunt Sally about the crafting rooms and I don't think he realized how much she loves sewing. She's already made a few new clothes for Uncle Jack and I. She may make some stuff for you too."
"I really love Sally." Ellie sighed, apparently remembering some difficult times when the ragdoll woman had made her some fancy dresses. "But I'm not a fan of dress up."
Danny nodded. At least the suits Sally made for him fit his style a bit more, Ellie was fully tomboy and hated wearing fancy dresses for anything other than special occasions. But she hated the idea of hurting the ragdoll woman's feelings by rejecting her clothing. With the amount of love and time the ragdoll queen put into each piece she made, it was very very difficult to say no to her.
"Well just steer clear of the crafting rooms." Danny laughed at the look of the internal battle in his sister's eyes. "Anywho, if you'll excuse me, I'm just gonna steal this lovely lady here for a moment."
Reaching over, the ghost boy gently took Mavis' hand and led her away from Johnny and Ellie and the concierge counter. The vampiress gave an airy laugh as she let the ghost prince lead her away and into a small side hallway that ran along the underside of the stairs. Leaning her back against a wall, she rested the palms of her hands on the wall behind her as she looked up at Danny, whose energy radiated the small area in a white protective feeling glow.
"What are we doing here?" Mavis asked, giggling softly and meeting his eyes. "I'm supposed to be at the counter until lunch."
"Well…" Danny suddenly seemed to become very shy, reaching up and rubbing the back of his neck. "Last night, during dinner, Johnnystein was telling me about why exactly he was here at the hotel. I don't know how I missed that your birthday is coming up."
Mavis reached up and took his free hand, knowing he was scolding himself for not knowing about the upcoming party. Leaning forward slightly to meet his eyes, she tried her best to give him a look that said she really didn't care about her birthday.
Which was partially true but she wouldn't tell him she was secretly excited for what Johnny was going to do for her party.
"Oh it's ok. It's not really that big of a deal. It's just my 118." She gave a small shrug but he clearly wasn't having it.
"I remember how excited you were about the song that Johnnystein was performing for you. I know you're excited for your birthday and you can't hide it from me." He shook his head, stubbornly. "Anyway, I wanted to give you… this."
Not releasing the hand that was holding hers as it just felt really nice to have her hand in his, he reached into his pocket and took out a small light blue box with a dark blue ribbon wrapped around it and held it out for her. The vampiress looked at the small box before looking up at him with her eyes sparkling in both shock and adoration and then back at the box. Taking the box out of his hand slowly, she looked over it.
Something about how the fabric looked with little elongated ovals that were slightly tilted told her that this box and ribbon were from the Pumpkin king and his ragdoll queen. She made a mental note to thank them as well as she pulled the ribbon out of it's bow and opened the box.
Inside was a beautiful pendant made out of what felt like ice. It was in the shape of a star and had several different cuts running through it so that light would scatter everywhere if it hit the pendant. The ice star pendant hung on a long silver chain that looked so thin and delicate that Mavis was worried she'd break it. Looking up from the necklace to meet Danny's watchful eyes, she tried to say just how beautiful this necklace was only to fail on finding the right words.
"I know, it's kinda silly but ghost ice lasts forever and won't melt unless it's put under very very high heat. Like tossed into a volcano level of hot." He said, blushing slightly at the look in the vampiress' bright blue eyes. "I'm a bit rusty but and I'm bad at making boxes so my aunt and uncle helped with that. Fair warning, I think my aunt is set on making you a bunch of new clothes for your birthday present. And my uncle may be sending a few pumpkins. But you didn't hear it from me."
Stepping forward slightly and leaning upwards, Mavis placed a kiss on the ghost boys cheek.
"I love it." She said softly, meeting his shocked eyes.
"Well… um… I'm glad." Danny's cheeks were dusted with a green blush as he gave an almost lovesick, self satisfactory smile.
Handing him the necklace, she turned her back to him so he could put the necklace on her. Setting a hand on the cool pendant, she turned back to face him and met his eyes yet again.
"So…" the ghost boy said, his voice soft. "I heard there's going to be quite the party here in a few days. I was just wondering if the birthday girl has a date to said party."
"Why do you ask?" Mavis said, her tone soft and teasing. "Is there a certain ghost boy who's wanting to take on the role of date to the birthday girl?"
"I think there is." He stepped closer so there was only a couple inches between them as his tone also took on a teasing note. "What do you think? Can I handle the role of date to the birthday girl?"
"I think you should be able to handle it fairly well."
At this point, the two of them were closer and the vampiress' hands had come to rest on his chest. If they got any closer…
Just a little closer…
"Mavis! Johnathan, where is my daughter!?"
The couple jumped at the sound of the count's loud voice. Danny even bumped his head against the wall, reaching up quickly in an attempt to soothe the not forming bump. The vampiress gave a little giggle and quickly made sure that he hadn't actually hurt himself. The ghost boy turned and pointed towards the wall to silently say he'd just phase through it and Mavis gave a nod, making sure she was still wearing her necklace and turning to head out, back towards the concierge stand.

A couple more hours had passed and after making up an excuse as to why she wasn't at the counter, Mavis had been able to convince her father to get back to his business elsewhere. Ellie had excused herself to go find her brother, saying she'd just stay in their rooms while she was there.
Waving to another new guest, Mavis turned back to where Johnny had been sitting. Apparently the red head hadn't seemed very bothered by the count and his shouting, seemingly still working on his song writing.
But Mavis could tell he was distracted.
A sly smile spreading over her lips, she leaned her elbows on the counter beside where Johnny was working. Looking over the paper, she could just barely make out small sketches of a faceless girl with a black ponytail. Silently nodding at the drawing skill the redhead had, she grinned.
"So, Danielle is pretty." She said, hoping her tone was casual enough to not raise suspicion.
"Yeah… And she likes to travel..." Johnny said dreamily as he sketched before catching himself and blushing as he rubbed his neck shyly. "I mean... she's cool, yeah."
Mavis only laughed.
