"I will never allow him to die."
It had been so easy to say despite the rubble, the unconscious Princess and the distraught archeologist. When he had spoken it as he held the other it felt like it was true and believable for he had never foreseen this. Then again, it is never one's place to peer into one's own destiny.
He'd never been able to see what would become of his king. Not tomorrow, two minutes or forty years.
Our destinies are closely wound.
That's what he liked to think, for clearly the fate of this particular life impacted his own.
Where is a high priest without his king?
Or vice-versa?
Yet, there he was. Unsteady, difficult breathing, slick and cold to the touch.
The finest healers, top-notch doctors, a multitude of priests. Oh, don't let our King die. The Princess is already gone.
And he'd sit beside the bed, kneel really, slumped forward, glasses askew with two hands clasped tightly to a single unresponding one. All who saw could assume he was praying. All he knew was the throbbing ache as he waited for those fingers to grasp his own.
