He volunteered - he was young and idealistic, then. He always did what he was told, and had the strength of his convictions to sustain him. He believed.
It took years before he realised - and years from his life - that things could be different, and still be alright. He'd decided he didn't need the world, because the world certainly didn't need him. He had done his duty, his time; needed to make his own path.
Nothing ever went smooth, but that had been his decision - not theirs. Now known as Shepherd Book, he understood Mal more than he'd ever let on.
