The
orange slices sat on a little plate, slowly beginning to shrivel in
the warm Konoha air. Hinata had ben sitting in the garden for
some hours now. It was one of those
days,
when nostalgia and lonliness mulled together into a single heavy
wreath that shrouded her thoughts and rendered her motionless.
The plate of oranges sat on her lap, long forgotten. She had
brought them out with her, for a snack, and it was only when she
reached her favorite bench that she realized she wasn't the least bit
hungry.
So instead she sat and watched the koi swimming in
the pond at her feet. They were black against the clear water,
their scales shining like fresh ink.
"Hinata-sama."
She almost jumped, startled, but years of training as a Hyuuga had schooled her into controlling her emotions. Instead she turned to meet the eyes of her cousin.
"Neji nii-san." the usual nervousness in her voice had disappeared with her lethargy.
"What are you still doing out here? It's late." he crossed his arms, his tone bland and with the slightest hint of impatience.
Hinata was suprised to see that it was already evening; she had forgotten how quickly night came in the autumn months.
"I was..." she glanced down at the plate in her lap "...eating oranges."
Neji quirked an eyebrow at said orange slices, which had by now become shrunken and dry from having been outside since noon.
"In any case," he uncrossed his arms and sighed, "you should come inside, before it gets too dark." As he turned to leave, she scrambled off the bench and grabbed his hand.
"Nii-san! Please...walk with me a while?"
Neji's eyes widened in suprise. Hinata, wanting to spend time with him? Except for the occasional family gathering, she had all but avoided him for the last two years.
And did he want to spend time with her?
"No." Of course not. He couldn't; it was too dangerous.
He looked down at her -- she was nearly a full head shorter than him-- not needing the byakugan to see her face wrapped in light from the young moon, and her pale, lavendar edged eyes binding him in the gentle silk of her gaze. Her lips were parted and her breath came faster than usual, as though even this small act of courage had exerted her.
He had to be careful, or he might soon start liking the way her small hand rested inside his, and the way her cheeks flushed in the cool breeze.
"...All right, Hinata-sama."
Neji allowed her to lead him through the darkening garden, and his eyes softened the slightest bit when she smiled at last.
Yes, this was far too dangerous for him; if he wasn't careful, he might suddenly find himself in love with her.

A/N: eh, not the best thing i've written, but it's decent, ne? P i'm really bad at ending things (in case you haven't noticed) and i had to sort of force myself to stop so i could actually get started on some real work today --"
