Cristina sighs and looks at her person fast asleep in bed. She wonders how Meredith got this sick and no one knew. She just hopes they caught it in time.
Meredith coughed in her sleep and as the coughs worsened they work her up. Her eyes fluttered opened as she tried to stop herself from coughing.
She looked at Cristina as she was struggling to stop coughing. Cristina quickly reacted and lightly hit Meredith on the back to help her coughing fit stop. After a minute she was able to stop coughing.
"Thanks." Meredith says softly.
Just then Dr Bailey walked in. "Good morning Meredith. How are you feeling?"
"I'm fine." Meredith said softly.
Dr Bailey knew that was not the truth but didn't push Meredith to tell her more. "Grey, it's time for those tests I told you about."
Meredith's eyes widened in fear. "Do we have to?"
"We do." Dr Bailey said softly. "I know you're scared but we need to figure this out and get a treatment plan for you. We want you to be healthy Mer so we need to confirm it and then set up a plan. And Cristina will be here with you for both procedures."
"That's right. I'll be right here with you Mer. I'm not going anywhere." Cristina said smiling at Meredith in bed.
Meredith let a few tears escape and then nodded. "Where's Derek?"
"He's near the exam room we are taking you to. He'll be able to see you before the procedures." Bailey told her.
"Okay." Meredith whispered.
"We're going to go now Mer." Bailey said and helped Meredith and her IVs into the wheelchair she brought for her. Bailey pushed her down the hallway towards the exam room.
Both Cristina and Bailey noticed how quiet Meredith was being on the way there.
"Mer you okay?" Cristina asked her quiet friend. Meredith just nodded in response.
They got to the exam room and saw Derek waiting inside of it. "Hey Mer. You're going to be just fine. I love you so much." He said and was kneeling down in front of her wheelchair.
"I love you too." She said softly. "I'm scared." She whispered.
"I know you are. I know it's super scary but you can do it. Cristina will be there with you and she will help you through the procedures." Derek said holding her hands. Meredith nodded and had tears running down her face.
"Derek we need to start." Bailey said to him. He nodded.
"Okay Meredith I have to go now but you will be just fine. I love you and I'll see you after." He kissed her on the forehead and left the room.
"Okay Mer, can you hop up onto this table for me please?" Bailey asked her. Meredith got onto the table but didn't lie down. She looked very scared.
"Sweetie you're going to be okay. I've got you." Bailey said softly to her , stroking her hair. Meredith let a few tears escape.
"Can you lie on your side and tuck your chin and knees to your abdomen for me please?"
Meredith didn't move when Bailey asked her to get into the position.
"Mer, it's okay." Cristina said and guided her friend into that position. Once Mer was in that position Cristina sat down in front of her so mer could see her and held onto both of Meredith's hands in hers. Cristina is looking Meredith in the eyes and keeps repeating that she'll be okay. "You're okay Mer. I've got you."
Bailey moves Meredith's gown out of the way and then cleans Meredith's back which makes Meredith flinch. Cristina sees more tears running out of Meredith's eyes. "Shh. You're okay Mer." Cristina stroked Meredith's hair.
Bailey draped Meredith's back with sterile towels.
"Meredith I'm going to numb you now. You're going to feel a pinch." Bailey said to her. There was no response from Meredith, only more tears.
Bailey injected the numbing medicine into Meredith's back and Meredith squeezed Cristina's hands. She whimpered a tiny bit. "It's okay Mer, you're just fine. Focus on me okay?" Cristina said to her.
"I'm going to start now. Cristina make sure she stays still. You hear that Grey? I need you to stay completely still for me." Bailey said looking at Cristina who nodded and felt Meredith grip her hands tighter.
Bailey inserted a hollow needle into Meredith's back and Meredith whimpered loudly and tried to move. She started crying more. "Grey you can't move. Cristina keep her still!" Bailey said.
"Mer, look at me. You're doing great. You just gotta stay still for us okay? Can you do that for us?" Meredith nodded but looked absolutely terrified and in pain.
"Hey remember the other day when Alex was being an idiot?" Cristina said trying to distract her.
After a few minutes Bailey got what she needed and took the needle out of Meredith's back. She bandaged up her back. And helped her sobbing intern lay flat on her back.
"Mer, I still need to perform a bone marrow biopsy. I'm so sorry sweetie. I know this isn't any fun for you." Bailey said sadly. "We're going to give you pain meds once this is all over okay sweetie?"
"No more needles." Meredith whispered. "I want to go home."
"I know Mer. I wish I didn't have to perform these tests on you. I know they are very painful. But we need to confirm if this is leukemia or not. And these tests will also help us discover what stage and how aggressive it is. I promise this is the last test and then you can go back to your room. Derek is waiting for you there." Bailey said and stroked Meredith's hair and tried to make her more comfortable.
"Two more needles Mer and then we'll be done. This first one is going to numb your hip." She injects Meredith with the local anesthetic and Meredith cries more.
"Cristina I'm going to sedate her to make it easier on her. She's had enough."
Cristina nods. "Yes please do that. She can't take much more."
Bailey quickly grabs what she needs for the sedation and quickly injected the medicine into Meredith's IV. It worked quickly and soon Meredith was out.
"I hate this Bailey. Why Meredith?"
Bailey sighed. "I do also Cristina. I don't know. We just need to make her better."
Bailey then started the procedure. She made a small incision to Meredith's skin and then inserted the hollow needle. Once she got the sample that she needed she pulled the needle out and quickly stitched her up.
They got Meredith onto a gurney and pushed her back to her room where Derek was waiting.and transferred her to her bed.
A few hours later Bailey got the results back from both tests. She looked at the tests and her heart sunk. She had a few tears escape before she wiped them away. She needed to not cry when she told them the results.
She got up and made her way to Meredith's room where Derek and Cristina were sitting with Meredith.
They noticed her arrival and immediately asked if she got the results back yet. Bailey nodded in response.
"Meredith, I have you results back." She said looking her in the eyes. "You have stage 3 AML leukemia. Acute Myelogenous Leukemia. I'm so sorry Meredith. We're going to do everything in our power to make you better."
She quickly left the room so they wouldn't see her crying.
The three remaining people in the room started crying. Meredith was just in shock and couldn't believe she has leukemia.
"I have leukemia." She thought to herself. "Why me?" She thought.
