Chapter 22: Operation: Break Up
Previously
"What is it?..." He asks in a whisper.
"It's better to do it privately when no one is around...and to do it tactfully and quick..."Jazz said.
She didn't like the thought of Katie getting hurt since she is harmless, but her brother has made his feelings clear...still, the very least it could be done peacefully.
Danny nodded and saw her point.
"Okay..."He said.
He soon left with Katie to their picnic, all the while Sam narrowed her eyes at the blonde girl.
"The sooner the better..."Sam muttered.
Jazz frowned.
"It's not like she wants to make his life worse..."Jazz scolded and Tucker nodded.
"Plus, I think I can still catch her on the rebound..."He said while the goth girl sent an icy glare at him.
The rest of Team Phantom just hoped that this would be resolved peacefully and fast.
Present Time
Katie was once again clinging hard to Danny's arm and Danny tried to stay calm.
He didn't want to go on this picnic date at all, it's just giving Katie the wrong idea that he's playing with her.
"It's the only way we can be alone..."He thought as he looked around.
There was no one around and realized something, they were already alone.
"Uh, Katie..."Danny began.
"Yeah..."Katie asked, still holding onto his arm.
Before Danny could say anything, a truck filled with chickens drove by and Katie's eyes widen at the sight of them.
"Chickens..."She thought as she suddenly clung to Danny harder.
The ghost boy was alerted to how tight she was being, and it lacked the usual affection she had.
"Uh... what are you doing?..." He asked.
"Uh... just... really wanted to hug you!..." Katie went nervously.
Danny noticed her tone wasn't the same. He only saw one thing different. He saw that as soon as she saw that truck with the chickens, she got like this.
"Wait..."The ghost boy thought.
"Are you... afraid of chickens?..." He asked in an almost joking tone.
Katie looked down, knowing that it might sound ridiculous but it was true. She nodded, surprising the ghost boy since he had been kidding.
"Let's just say... I had a bad experience with one..." She admits sheepishly.
"Darn it, looks like I'm gonna have to wait a bit..."He thought.
He figured that breaking up with her in the presence of something that makes uncomfortable was a bad move.
He wasn't that mean and he's not going to do it until she's calmer.
He waited until the red light changed green and the chicken truck was soon gone.
"Finally..."He thought as he and Katie crossed the street together.
He decided to wait a few moments until he noticed that she was calm again, given that she is now smiling and resting her head on his shoulder.
"Okay, now's a chance..."The ghost boy thought.
He stopped, alerting her.
"Katie..."
"Yes?..." She asks, taking his hands.
The ghost boy felt worse about this but took a deep breath. Before he could talk, something hit his shoulder from above.
"Huh?!..."Danny exclaimed.
It was white, and very stinky and Katie's eyes widen.
"Uh oh..." She went.
"Uh... what just landed on me?..." He asks and Katie cringed a bit.
"I think you know... I just don't want to say it..." Katie said, taking his hand. "Come on, I saw a bathroom in a smoothie place we passed, we can grab something there..." She said.
"What? B-But-..."
"Don't worry... it'll be small." She assured.
As they left, three pigeons were watching from the power-line wires, with the purple one seemingly laughing.
15 minutes of scrubbing later
Danny and Katie had arrived to the smoothie place and the ghost boy spent a good 15 minutes in the bathroom cleaning the gross stuff off of him.
After he washed it out, and Katie bought a smoothie for him as an act of love, it made Danny feel worse.
"Here...I got some blue-berry and banana for you..."She said sweetly.
"Uh, thanks..."Danny said as he took it to be polite.
She smiled again and Danny felt more guilt.
"She really is being nice but...things can't go on like this..."He thought as they walked out of the smoothie shop and went back in the direction of the park.
"Katie... now I got that... stuff, out of my hair..."He began.
"I'm hoping you used soap too..."She said in a serious tone.
"I did... anyway... I just wanna say-..."
"Good but don't worry, I won't say anything..." She said innocently.
"Uh, right... anyway-..."He was cut off yet again when the blonde girl took him by the hand again.
"Come on..." She said, tugging his hand.
"Seriously?!..."The ghost boy thought as they crossed the street again.
Danny couldn't believe this. It's been over half an hour and he still hasn't gotten the chance to break up with Katie.
Every attempt of his either gets interrupted or she misunderstands what he is saying and gets all weird on him.
"Who knew how hard it was to break up with someone?..."Danny thought, exasperated.
He decided to just do it now and get it over with. He took a breath and was about to answer, but was interrupted.
Again!
"Katie! Over here, Darling!..."Was heard.
Danny turned around and saw a man woman approaching them.
"Who are they?..."Danny asked nervously.
"My parents..."She said.
"Her parents?!..." Danny thought as the blonde girl pulled him by the wrist.
"It's about time you guys met each other. You'll like my parents; they're a little weird, but nice. Wait right here, I'll be back..."Katie said before planting another kiss on him.
Danny's eyes widened as realized he's meeting her family.
"Okay, this really is moving way too fast..."He thought, panicking as tried to get away.
It was too late as Katie brought her parents over.
"Mom, Dad, meet Danny. Danny, these are my parents..."Katie introduced.
The Kaboom parents smiled, though they looked almost like they were smiling to stay alive than a normal smile. It was kinda creepy.
"Danny, it's nice to meet you..."Mr. Kaboom said, wanting be polite to the boy.
"Katie's told us so much about you..."Mrs. Kaboom said, trying to be kind for her daughter.
"We barely know each other though..."Danny said but Katie thought he was joking.
"See? Told you he was funny..."She laughed.
"Oh, he's wonderful.."Mrs. Kaboom said, laughing along.
"He's certainly... something..."Mr. Kaboom said, though his smile seemed forced.
Danny wasn't sure what to say. He needed to get this done soon and without further interruption.
"Excuse me. I'll be right back..."He said, heading towards the bathroom again.
He needs to mentally prepare himself.
Katie's parents gave each other looks. They noticed that the boy seemed off and it worried them to be honest.
"Sweetie, can we have a word with you real quick?..."Mr. Kaboom said.
His daughter was confused as her parents pulled her away a few feet, just in case Danny came back.
Katie did not like this or their sudden attitude.
"What is wrong with you guys? I'm so embarrassed..."Katie complained.
"Katie, about Danny..." Her mother began.
"Isn't he dreamy?..."Katie gushed and almost swooned.
"That's not what we meant..."Her father began. "He seemed... on edge..."He said, being gentle.
Katie just sent him a confused look but thought about it.
"He lives in a town with ghosts and monsters, after all..."Katie said, not getting it.
Her parents sighed as they tried to explain things to her as gently as possible..in a way as to not..upset her. They just have to know.
"Have you... lost your temper around him?..." He asked, feeling nervous.
"No..." Katie said, wondering what that has to do with anything.
With that, he scratched his chin.
"So... he doesn't know... about her?..."The father thought in relief.
"Oh...I see..."Katie's mother said, surprised to hear that.
Katie raised a brow at her parents weirdness while she waited for her boyfriend to return.
With Danny
The ghost boy washed his face with water in order to calm his nerves down.
Once he was done, he looked himself in the mirror and kept a stern face.
"I have to end this. I don't care how mad she might get...I have to get her away from parents and do this...this ends now..."He told himself, wanting this over with.
He walked out of the bathroom and saw Katie's parents going.
"They're leaving?..." He asks.
"Yeah... we had a... small little tiff. Nothing serious..." She said, smiling innocently.
"At least they're gone, so this gets less awkward..." He thought in relief.
That's when he remembered something about her father.
"So that was your dad?..."He asked.
"Yup..." Katie said, sounding a bit miffed about the conversation they had a few moments ago.
Although he planned to break up with Katie, his curiosity got the better of him.
"Why was he doing a Jimmy Stewart impression?..."The ghost boy asked.
Katie rose an eyebrow.
"That's his normal voice..." She answered.
Danny was puzzled.
"Okay... why does he sound like Jimmy Stewart?..."He had to ask
Katie thought about, then shrugged.
"I have no idea..."She admitted.
With that, Katie pulled him along to their destination.
Later
In the park
Danny found himself on the picnic with Katie, who was very close now. It was the very park they met, and it seems it will be where it ends for them.
"Oh Danny, this is so romantic..."Katie gushed and it made Danny feel worse.
"Okay...I gotta do this quick..."Danny thought as he took a deep breath.
"Katie...listen...there's something I've been meaning to talk to you about..."Danny said.
"What is it, Hon?..."Katie asked and Danny felt a sting in his chest as he noted the girl's innocent, lovey-dovey eyes.
"You see...we have been seeing each other and-..."He shut his eyes and cleared his head.
"Katie... there's something I need to say..."He began, trying to remember what he rehearsed with his friends and sister.
To his surprise, Katie just clasped her hands in an excited manner.
"Oh, I know what it is..." Katie said.
"Y-You do?..."Danny asked, surprised.
"And the answer is yes..."She said in excitement.
"What?..."He asked, wondering what she's talking about.
"Of course I'll go to the dance with you..." She gushed happily, since there had been announcement for an upcoming dance soon.
Danny face faulted.
"Seriously?!..."He exclaimed while Katie just kept talking about it.
"Seriously! It'll be so much fun!…"She said and Danny groaned as this is getting worse.
"Katie, you don't understand...I-..." He cut off when he heard a snobby voice.
"Well, well, well...what do we got here?..."A snobby, accented voice was heard.
Danny and Katie soon saw Paulina arrive with Star in tow.
The two girls glanced at Danny before giving Katie a once over. It was a strange sight to see the Fenton boy with such a pretty girl. Too bad Paulina would try to "fix" that.
"Look Star, Fenton actually found a date," Paulina said with a haughty tone. "Where'd you buy her?..."She said mockingly.
"Really? I thought she lost a bet..."Star added.
The two snickered as Katie felt her anger grow. Danny didn't want anything to do with the girls. Besides, he was already going to hurt her enough.
No need to add more pain.
"Just ignore them..."Danny said, but his own words were ignored.
"It's like she's doing community service just being around him..."Paulina mocked.
"Control...Katie...watch your temper...control..."Katie thought as she kept on staring down the mean popular girls, as Star and Pauline continued snickering
She tried to calm herself down to not make a scene in front of Danny but it was proving difficult.
"I guess Fenton might be the one doing the community service, since she'd have to be crazy to want him for a boyfriend..." Paulina continued.
"Hey, watch it! Go try on make up somewhere!..."Danny said, not wanting Katie upset.
He might not want to date Katie anymore but this is not how he wanted to end things.
However, that is when his ghost sense went off. The blue wisp went off in a different direction, grabbing his attention. He didn't want to ignore Katie, but the boy couldn't say no when ghosts appeared.
"Uhhh...Katie? I gotta use the restroom. So would you mind waiting here?..."Danny asked.
Before Katie could give a response to his request, the ghost boy already left towards the restroom. Once he was inside, he morphed himself into his half ghost hero alter ego to fight off the whatever spirit set off his ghost sense, but what he found was a bit of a let down.
"BEWARE!..."
Danny groaned, turning around and he rolled his eyes. It turns out that the ghost who was around was just the Box Ghost, who was "terrorizing" the citizens with whatever box themed thing he was doing to get attention again.
The ghost boy didn't care to even listen, mentally hitting himself for leaving Katie to deal with the pest.
Before the Box Ghost could even utter another beware from his mouth, the ghost boy went straight to business with some ghost busting and tried to get this done fast.
As that was going on, Katie was left to deal with a very mean and obnoxious latina girl and a slightly less mean pretty blonde next to her too.
"Why'd he leave?..." Star asked, confused.
"I guess Fenton couldn't handle dating a real girl that wasn't imaginary..."Paulina said cruelly.
"Yeah, at least imaginary girls aren't so clingy..."Star said before they both turned to Katie.
"More like desperate if you actually want the biggest loser at Casper High..."Paulina said as she and Star walked away, laughing cruelly.
Katie, now with no Danny around and hurt by what they just said, growled as her face became red.
"Why...you...you rotten...shallow...horrid little JERKS!..."Katie thought as she felt her control slip away.
"YOU'LL PAY FOR THIS!..."Katie snapped as her eyes began to glow white again.
With Danny
Danny quickly sucked the annoying ghost into the thermos, trapping him there.
"Finally..."He muttered as he changed forms.
He decided to get back to the picnic area and finish what he had to do with Katie...the sooner, the better.
However, this was interrupted as he heard a loud noise, an explosion of all things.
KABOOM!
"What the-..."Danny exclaimed as he heard the explosion, then the sounds of a loud roar and people screaming.
"COME BACK HERE!..."Was heard and Danny recognized the voice.
"THE MONSTER!..."Danny exclaimed as he took off.
