After Bailey leaves Meredith's hospital room, Meredith bursts into tears. "Why me??? Why do I have to get cancer? And everyone is going to leave me." She sobbed to Derek.
"Shhh. I know, it's not fair. I hate this too. I hate that you're sick. I wish you weren't. But I'm not going anywhere and neither is Cristina. We will be right by your side this entire time." Derek told her. He had gotten into her bed, being careful of her IVs, and held her in his arms.
Meredith turned her head into Derek's chest and just cried. "A-and I just don't feel good! A-and I know it's going to get worse!" She said starting to cough.
Derek rubbed her back to get her to stop coughing.
"Mer, you are going to be fine. Derek's right. We'll be right here with you. You won't have to do treatments alone. You're my person. I can't lose you. So I'm going to do everything in my power to make sure you have the best care and treatment to make sure you get better." Cristina told her.
Meredith nodded while still burying her head into Derek's chest. "I'm tired and I don't feel good."
"Go to sleep. We'll be right here when you wake up." Derek told her and rubbed her back to soothe her. Meredith fell asleep a few minutes later.
"I hate this Derek! Why does she have to be sick? She's had the hardest life. She doesn't deserve this thrown at her." Cristina said angrily.
Derek sighed. "I know. She doesn't. We need to be strong for her so she keeps her spirits up. We need her to stay positive. We need to do everything possible to increase her chances of surviving."
Meredith shivers in her sleep. "I think she has a low grade fever." Derek said, feeling her forehead.
Cristina frowned. "Not like last time right?"
"No. It's probably just a symptom of her cancer. I'll page a nurse for something to try to lower it." Derek pages a nurse and a nurse comes back with some meds to put into Meredith's IV.
A few hours later Meredith is still sleeping in Derek's arms. Dr Bailey comes into the room and gives them a small smile. She doesn't want to admit it but her intern having cancer is really affecting her. She hates that Meredith is super sick with cancer.
"Derek, can you wake her up please? We need to talk about treatment." Bailey says to Derek.
Derek nods. "Mer, sweetie time to wake up." He whispers to her.
Meredith grumbles and keeps her eyes closed. "Still sleepy."
"Mer, Dr Bailey needs to talk to us."
"Later." She whines.
"Mer, we need to discuss some things now." Dr Bailey said, walking over to the bed. She rubs Meredith's shoulder. "Wake up for me sweetie."
Meredith slowly opens her eyes and rolls around to face Dr Bailey. She groans in pain as she does so as she's still in a lot of pain from the tests that she had previously. "Ow."
"Grey we need to discuss your treatment. You will be having chemo three days a week with two days break in between each dose. Your cancer is aggressive so we need to be aggressive in return. We will start your chemo tomorrow. We need to start immediately to have the best chance of getting you into remission." Bailey says.
Meredith has tears running down her face as Bailey talks.
"I know it's scary Mer. We've got you." Bailey says. "We also need to insert a port into your chest. We're going to do this to make it easier on you so that we don't have to stick you with needles every single time. We'll be able to draw blood from it also."
"When are you going to insert the port?" Derek asks.
Bailey looks at her watch. "Now."
Meredith bursts into tears. "No! I don't wanna." She sobs terrified.
"It's going to be okay." Derek says trying to calm her down.
"No! I'm scared!" She wails.
"I'll walk down with you to the OR. I can't come in but I'll go as far as I can go. I promise you, you will be just fine. Bailey is going to take good care of you, isn't that right Dr Bailey?"
"That's right! You don't think I'd let anything happen to my favorite intern now do you?"
"I heard that." Cristina mutters.
"I'm your favorite intern?" Meredith asks quietly.
"You are! So I'm not going to let anything happen to you. I promise you." Bailey says, smiling at her.
"I still don't want to."
"I know you don't Mer. But this is better than you getting poked with needles every five minutes right?" Derek asks her.
"Yeah." Meredith says softly.
"Can you let Dr Bailey do this? So we can start working on getting you healthy again?" Cristina asks. "I need my person to be healthy again. I need you."
"Okay." Meredith whispers.
"Thank you both." Bailey says to Derek and Cristina. "Derek I'm going to have to ask you to get out of her bed now."
Derek starts to get up but Meredith grabs onto his shirt and doesn't want to let go. "No! Don't leave! I need you."
"Shhhh. Don't worry. I'm going to walk right along side your bed."
"Okay." Meredith whispers and he gets her to release her hand from his shirt.
Once Derek is out of the bed Bailey pulls up the railings to the bed and puts the cap on all of Meredith's hair so she's ready for surgery.
"Bye Mer. I'll be here when you get back." Cristina tells her.
"Bye." Meredith says softly.
Dr Bailey pushes Meredith's bed down the hallway and Derek holds her hand the entire time. He's says comforting things to her to make her feel better.
Once they get to the doors Bailey stops pushing Meredith's bed.
"Mer, I can't go any further. I love you sweetie. I'll be there when you wake up."
"I love you." Meredith sobs. "I'm scared! I don't like needles!"
"I know you are but you will be okay! I promise you. And remember this is better than you getting stuck with needles. Just think of it that way okay?"
Meredith nods tearfully.
"We have to go now." Bailey says softly.
Derek kisses her on the head.
Meredith continues crying as Bailey pushes her through the doors. They then get to the OR and Meredith sees the operating table.
Bailey pushes the bed next to the table. "Mer, do you think you can get up on the table by yourself or do you need some help?"
"Need help." She says softly.
A nurse comes to help her and starts to pick her up and Meredith freaks out. "No! I don't want to! I don't want to do this! I'm scared!" She sobs. "I want Derek! I want to go home! No! No! No!"
"Mer, shhh you're okay sweetie. Take a deep breath for me. I've got you. Remember I'm not going to let anything bad happen to you." Bailey says, trying to calm her down.
"Bailey I'm scared! I don't want surgery! That's scary! I don't want to go on the table!" Meredith sobs with her eyes wide open looking terrified.
"Dr Bailey do you want us to sedate her?" A nurse asks.
"No!" Meredith yells.
Bailey glares at the nurse and waves them away. "Don't worry, we're not going to sedate you. I know you can calm down on your own."
Meredith still has tears running down her face. "I don't want to be sick Bailey." She whispers.
"I know. I know you don't. That's why we need to do this. We need to be able to start your treatment but we need this port inserted in order to start making you better."
"I want to get better." Meredith whispers.
"I know you do. Do you think I can help you into the table?"
Meredith hesitates and then nods and allows Bailey to pick her up and place her on the operating table.
Bailey starts attaching wires and IVs to Meredith's body. The anesthesiologist gets the mask and is about to place it on Meredith's mouth and nose when Meredith sits up all of a sudden.
"Mer, can you lay back down for me?"
Meredith looks around terrified.
"I'm scared. You're putting everything on now and it's getting real. I- I can't do this. I-I need to go." Meredith looks like she's about to get off of the table.
Bailey puts her hands on Meredith's shoulder and pushes her back down gently to a laying down position.
She whispers comforting things to Meredith and soothes the panicking girl. Once Meredith calms down Bailey nods at the anesthesiologist who places the mask over Meredith's mouth and nose. She is soon out.
Bailey sighs and brushes away a few tears at seeing her intern so sick and so scared. She goes to scrub in and comes back a few minutes later. She then does the small surgery.
After it is complete she brings a sleeping Meredith back to her room and gets her situated in her bed.
I hope you enjoyed!!!
