Chapter 28: Dinner with the Kabooms: Preparations
It was late in that evening and Danny was high in the skies, as he was on patrol, viewing all over Amity Park for any evil ghosts.
Thankfully, Katie had to go home early to help her parents set up for her relatives visits, so Danny managed to avoid another date with that blonde time bomb.
"If only the Ghost King were to be free again… okay, I'm actually begging for a massive ghost invasion for once..."He thought in despair and mild amusement at his own hopes for today.
He needed find more ways to get out of this relationship instead of just avoiding her (specifically in a way that doesn't involve angering her or destroying the town), and he needed them yesterday!
Unfortunately, he's still stuck dating her and come tomorrow, he will be forced to have dinner with her parents and her relatives while that blonde psycho keeps her hands on him for "emotional support".
"I gotta stop thinking this...If this keeps up, I might need to ask Clockwork or Pandora for help..."Danny muttered in despair as he kept flying, trying to find any troublesome ghosts who were out in order to take out some misplaced aggression.
After 10 minutes, there was no attack, crime waves or even a mild nuisance being committed tonight.
"The one time I want to hear a "beware" and he's not here, unbelievable..."He muttered as his phone rang.
He answered it and became talking to his friends.
"Hey guys, did you find anything? Anything?..."Danny asked, hoping for something to vent his frustrations on.
"No, it's all clear by the Nasty Burger..."Tucker said on his end.
"And I don't see any trouble by the park..."Sam said on her end.
"Seriously?! Are all my ghostly enemies having a day off or something?..."The ghost boy thought in frustration.
The one time he wanted a busy night and he end up with an unwanted slow night. He could practically taste the irony right now.
"Ugh… wonderful..."Danny said on his end.
"You okay?..." Tucker asked, even though it's a standard question.
There was a long pause and he knew the answer.
"I'm taking that as a no..."He said.
"Of course not… You guys know that not only has Katie NOT broken up with me but now she wants me to have dinner with her family… a family that for all I know, will try to eat me if I don't agree to someday give them grandkids or something…" He muttered, not looking forward to the dinner.
He already met Katie's parents once while he had been in the middle of his first real attempt to break up with their daughter and they, unfortunately, seemed to approve of him.
"I just want to go back to our version of normal, the one that doesn't involve a lovesick girl that can turn into a monster, and who also has the world's worst mood swings and a total lack of control of hormones..."He muttered.
"Don't worry, Tucker and I have an idea..."Sam said, getting his attention.
"You do?!..."Danny asked, feeling hopeful.
"Yeah, the idea is that we get a mannequin and dress it up like you, you sweep in disguised the take it, we make everyone think a ghost kidnapped you and you disappear for 4-5 years, until Katie moves away and/or finds someone else. ..." Tucker said.
Danny's hopeful smile drops and groaned.
"So… not necessarily good ideas, huh?..." He asked flatly.
"I did not say they were favorable..."Sam said.
"It can be worse, besides...I'm pretty sure Frostbite might be willing to give you a place to stay if we ask. So, it's an option..."Tucker added.
"Thanks but I'll keep looking..."Danny said before hanging up.
The teen hero decided to call it a night and flew back home, tired and not looking forward to tomorrow.
"At least I can get a good night sleep tonight..."He thought as he kept flying.
Unknown to the ghost boy, a certain small droid was spying on him and recorded the entire day, including that conversation. It was sending the footage to a certain someone who was watching with interest.
"Well, well, well...It seems that Daniel found himself in quite the situation and wants to call it quits. I suppose someone should make sure he doesn't..."The figure said with evil intent before smirking some more in antagonistic glee.
He flew away back to his lair, making preparations for his next plot.
Later
Danny, who has now brushed his teeth and was wearing his purple pajamas, felt exhausted.
He arrived home and didn't even say more than 2 words to his folks as he just went to his room and to bed.
He laid there, staring at the ceiling and knowing that tomorrow, he had to deal with another day of this insanity and have dinner with his so-called girlfriend's family.
"How did I get myself into this mess?..."He thought, groaning. "Oh right, I ran into a cute girl who had a thing for me, and because I was dateless, I went for it and now I'm stuck with her until she either grows tired of me or I find a way to make her dump me for good..."He muttered.
The first one seems next to impossible now given how Katie acts, so he has to rely on making her dump him, one way or the other.
Still, he tried to be optimistic.
"Okay Fenton, tomorrow is a new day and as long as you don't do anything to MAKE her like you more and just try to act more like a loser in front of her, things shouldn't get worse..."He thought, trying to convince himself more than anything.
With that in mind, the ghost boy finally calmed down enough to finally get to sleep.
All the while, unaware of what tomorrow was going to have in store for him.
The Next Day
Danny woke up, yawning and stretched his arms a bit, doing his best to awaken fully, not that he wanted it that way.
He then hit the showers, wishing they would somehow take up his whole day. Once he finished his shower, dried himself off with his intangibility, and got himself fully dressed for the day. He then went downstairs for breakfast.
He wasn't looking forward going to school even more than usual cause he knew that she would be waiting for him there with her clingy attitude and affection...and if not, she'd race to his house as soon as possible.
"Where's Skulker when you need him?..."He thought, trying to get through the day.
He knew that it's not like he hind in my room all day. So he might as well just go and endure as much as he could.
"Maybe I can still try and convince her that we're all wrong for each other...or maybe that I'm not the kind of guy she sees me as..."He considered.
However, as he entered the kitchen to have breakfast with his family, they were all watching a news report that was on TV.
Yet another one about Casper High.
"What the heck?..."Danny said as his parents saw him.
"Danny, come see. You'll never guess what just happened to your school!..."Maddie urged as the TV showed Lance Thunder, who was once again covering the news...and looking bitter for doing so.
"This is Lance Thunder, reporting live at Casper High..." He said as he showed an image of the school, which was now covered in anvils this time and a very distraught looking Mr. Lancer and Principal Ishiyama were also on the news.
"Apparently, late last night, three hooligans broke into school ground and started...some kind of anvil fight..."The meteorologist said before turning to the two educators. "Principal Ishiyama, do you have any explanation as to why or how this happened?..."The blonde man asked.
"This event is a display of the natural laws of physics that go red! How should I know!?..."The Principal said, looking at the wrecked campus and looking upset.
Danny couldn't help but notice that she also looked quite nervous for some reason, like she was trying avoid the question by giving a solid answer but had to say something.
"This is a disaster! My classroom is in ruins and so is the rest of the school!..."Mr. Lancer said, looking panicked and tired.
"Be thankful they didn't do the same to you..."The principal said, still being vague about the cause.
The weatherman/unofficial reporter nodded before continuing with his report.
"The police so far have no suspects but similar to the...pudding incident a while back...there are reports of more strange animal footprints and more business cards which the letters WB labeled on it..."The man explained.
"WB?..."Danny thought as they all continued to hear the news report.
"Construction workers are removing the anvils now but until they have a proper assessment of the damage, the school will be closed until further notice to allow the necessary repairs be made..."The principal said, looking upset as she saw an anvil being removed from the wall.
Danny blinked upon hearing this.
"School's out again?..."He asked out loud, surprised by that.
"Lousy ghosts, always causing trouble..."Jack muttered, automatically assuming that anything strange happening in this town is a result of ghosts.
His son didn't hear as he was still processing this information.
"First the school gets flooded with pudding and now this? What is going on and who or what is WB?..."Danny asked in disbelief before his phone started ringing.
Danny went to a more secluded space to answer it while his parents began to suspect that ghosts were behind the school's sudden prank/attack and Jazz was starting to worry about it being some kind of revenge plot.
"Hello..."Danny answered.
"Danny, it's Sam. Please, tell me that you saw the news this morning..."Sam asked.
"I just did...looks like we have no school today..."Danny said. "Do you think the ones that did this are really the same that flooded the school with pudding?..."He questioned.
"Yes I do, someone really wants to cause trouble but that's not the only reason I called..."Sam said before deciding to get back to the matter at hand.
"So, any strategies for the situation about your would-be girlfriend or her family?..."She asked, obviously jealous but Danny didn't notice.
"No...I am still pretty much expected to go to this dinner tonight but I'm sticking with trying to find a way to her to dump me or at least get her family's disapproval. If I'm lucky, I won't be welcomed in their home..."Danny said.
"This is a situation I never thought any boy would be in..."Sam said.
"Don't remind me..."Danny muttered as they got another call.
It was Tucker who was call and soon it became a three-person conversation as they discussed their situation with Katie.
"Dude, I got it. We'll just say you have a visiting cousin and you can't come tonight..."The tech geek said quickly.
"She'll probably insisting inviting them..."Danny said, seeing that can fall apart fast.
"Plus, his family can verify whether or not it's true..."Sam said, also seeing it.
Danny sighed and realized that his day would go uninterrupted. At least for now.
With no way out of this, he just wanted time alone.
"Look...I'm gonna go out and clear my head. I just need some me time. Call me if you find anything that can help or at least stall my dinner with Katie tonight..."Danny said with some dread in his voice.
The ghost boy ended the phone call with his friends and sighed.
"Well, at least I can get a break from you-know-who for a few hours and maybe I should look into what's going on in this town..."Danny thought, somewhat relieved about that.
He didn't realize it yet but he had once again jinxed himself.
A little later
The ghost boy was about to grab a bite for breakfast and he was alone right now.
His parents had just stepped out to go inspect Casper High for any ghost activities lurking about and Jazz decided to go to the library to see if she can research any books or news articles that might be the cause for Katie's transformations.
He hoped that she'd have better luck than he has been having lately.
"Maybe I'll be lucky and get hit by something that it knocks me out for the rest of the day..."He thought as he looked around.
He was home alone and de-stress but too many weird things are happening all over town that he can't just ignore them.
Things were getting too bizarre and he isn't sure if they are linked to his so-called girlfriend or not.
"I guess I'll find out soon..."He thought as he got ready.
He was about to change forms so that he could go for a flight and try and come up with new ideas on how to convince Katie to break up with him and maybe find out who the school vandals are in the process.
Unfortunately, the person he was trying to avoid was closer than he thought and knocked on his door. He didn't realize that he probably should have just checked who was out there when he opened the door, only to see a beaming blonde girl with hearts in her eyes appearing before him.
"Danny!..."Katie said, hugging him and peppering the right side of his face with her kisses.
The ghost boy stepped back, his face unseen by her to show how frightened he was.
"What did I do to deserve this?!..."He thought as the blonde girl pulled back, still with that lovesick face.
"Uh...Katie...hey...didn't expect to see you so early...Um...I thought you said that it was your place and it was at 6 tonight..."Danny said, hoping she didn't bring her family here.
The blonde girl giggled and did a coy pose, looking cute and scary at the same time.
"Oh, Danny. I want to come to say thanks for what you did..."She said, looking overjoyed right now.
Danny saw this and groaned, trying to downplay things before it got more out of hand.
"Uh... okay. I know promised to come but-..."He was silenced when she raised a hand to silence him
"I'm not talking about the dinner, Pookie-Bear..."She said, winking at him, as if they had some sort of secret or something.
The ghost boy went from scared to confused at that.
"What is she going on about?..."Danny thought as the blonde girl clasped both hands together.
"I love the flowers you sent me..." Katie said, still looking happy.
"Flowers?!..."Danny thought, confused.
"Huh?..."He let out and she giggled.
"Don't play dumb... I got them last night..." Katie said in a coy way.
The ghost boy was confused as he had no idea what she was talking about. He watched the blonde girl pull something she had outside the door. He waited in dismal silence until he heard her come back in.
''These..."Katie said, dropping the flowers one a nearby table.
To Danny's horror, it was a comically large bouquet of roses. The kids that you see girls get in the movies when guys try an romance them.
"WHERE THE HECK THIS THOSE COME FROM?!..."Danny thought in horror as the blonde girl pulled out a card that had been with them.
"To my sweet Katie, from one little badger to another. Love, Danny. P.S. I can't wait to see you again..." Katie said, reading the note out loud.
Danny's eyes widened.
"He didn't..." He thought in horror. "Of course, he did!..."He thought in rage while the blonde girl kept admiring the flowers that she mistakenly believes are from him.
"Personally, I'm not sure why you used badger instead of something cuter like a kitten or a rabbit, but I guess we all have our own thing..." Katie said. "Still, this was very sweet of you..."She said before placing a kiss on his cheek.
All the while, the ghost boy forced a fake smile on his face for her while on the inside, he was cursing Vlad's name, coming up with many ways to get back at him... but that would be after he gets away from the lovesick blonde girl, who proceeded to embrace him tightly, rubbing her face against his.
"I love them so much, just like with you..."Katie muttered that last part, sending a cold feeling down the ghost boy's body.
"Darn that Fruitloop, how does he know how to ruin my day when he's nowhere in sight?!..."The ghost boy thought, feeling miserable.
The blonde girl then let Danny go and proceeded to stare at him with hearts in her eyes again. Eyes that filled him with dread as she began talking again
"So, since school's out and my cousin's won't be here until 6...I guess that means that we get to spend some time together..."Katie said in a playful tone. "And we can go to that lunch earlier than we thought..."Katie said.
"Uh..."Danny paused as the blonde girl pulled out a certificate.
"It's really sweet that you managed to get us a reservation at Chez Etoile but that's the most expensive restaurant in town and you told me it was out of your price range...how did you pull that off?..."Katie asked, looking overjoyed and curious.
The ghost boy saw this and mentally groaned as he realized what is happening here.
"Not only did he set me up with the flowers but this too?!..."Danny thought as he looked at the certificate.
It was for a meal at Chez Etoile, which includes dessert and all sorts of things.
He also knew that place is really fancy, expensive and romantic and that was bad news in that situation. He tried to save himself from this as best as he could.
"Um...Katie...I didn't..."Danny tried but the blonde girl giggled.
"Oh, don't be so modest. Now come on...we can have fun and later have lunch there since we STILL have to have dinner with my family later..."Katie reminded, sighing before smiling.
"Still, no need to be quick..."She said, winking again as she cuddled closer to his arm as she lead him away from his home.
"Here we go again..."Danny thought in mental exhaustion as he once again found himself on another "date" with this girl.
All the while, making mental plans to get back at Vlad for ruining his plans to ruin this relationship.
