Chapter Eight: The Journey Through the Desert
The Pokémon herd had stayed at the spot for the rest of the afternoon. And when the sun started to set over the western horizon, they laid down to go to sleep. While the rest of the herd stayed close together closer to where Drudd was, Blitz and his family stuck around Donna, Aurora and Twig. The Aurorus laid her long neck around her two friends. Blitz and the Mouse Pokémon were about to join them when they noticed that some of the others in the Pokémon were moving away from the group to stand watch. Blitz then looked to them and said, "You all go and get some rest. I'll help them out."
"Blitz, no." Cynthia disagreed when he turned to walk off. Blitz looked down to his adopted mother and she said, "You've done enough for today. I think it would be better for you to rest."
"But-" Blitz started to argue. But the Raichu wouldn't have any of it as she said, "No buts. You've done enough for today."
"Okay, then." Blitz said before laying down against Aurora's side. Cynthia nudged Bonnie forward while she looked to Brock and gestured for him to follow. The Pikachu followed after the Raichu to help keep a look out.
Both Bonnie and Sam laid down against Blitz's sides and tried to get as comfortable as possible. The day's events had left all of them tired enough to once again fall fast asleep.

The sun started to rise in the East and its rays caused most of the Pokémon herd to start waking up. They let out chitters, bellowing yawns and stretched to get started on the day. While they were starting to get up, Brock, who had been the last to watch over them, leapt down from the rock and quickly made his way to his family and friends. Brock ran up to Blitz who was still sleeping soundly with the others. Brock stopped and then jumped into the air. He landed on Blitz's chest, making the Charizard scrunch up his face. Brock looked up to his face and said, "Hey, wake up, you guys!"
But the group just continued to sleep away. Brock tried it again by grabbing the sides of Blitz's head and shook it a little, "Come on. Get up!"
Blitz opened his eyes for a brief moment, but closed it again. He groaned while Brock said, "Enough with the beauty sleep. You're ravishing enough already."
Brock gave a couple of slaps to Blitz's cheeks while saying, "Hey! Hello! Anybody home in there?"
Blitz gasped from the slaps and opened his eyes to see his uncle. Brock cried out as he took a step back. The Charizard looked to the Pikachu with a slightly annoyed look and asked him, "Uh, Uncle Brock, what are you doing?"
"I believe you left a wake-up call for the dawn of time." Brock said as he carefully dropped back down to the ground. Blitz just looked at him with a shake of his head as he was still sleepy. Brock sighed before hopping onto the Charizard's head. He then shouted, "Come on! Move it, man!"
"What's the hurry?" Blitz asked as he carefully moved around the others who were still sleeping. The noise and movements started to wake them up as well. Brock then told him, "Something's about to happen. The Pokémon herd's starting to gather around without us." He made a suggestion, "We might want to check it out."
"Okay." Blitz said before letting loose a yawn. Brock climbed But they stopped when they heard Tar shout, "Rise and shine! Drudd says that everybody goes." They looked to the Tyranitar as he tried to force an Tropius onto its feet while shouting, "Come on. Get up, you." He used his arms to try and push the Tropius onto his feet, "On your feet. Quit dawdling!"
Blitz and Brock cringed at the old Pokémon's harshness to another. Brock then muttered to Blitz, "Huh. The charm never stops around here does it?"
Tar growled when he heard some of what the Mouse Pokémon said. He looked to the two and questioned with a glare, "One of you say something?"
"Uh, no-" Blitz said as he glanced to Brock who was hiding behind Blitz's head. The Flame Pokémon shook his head and then said, "No, sir. We didn't say anything."
Tar then walked up to them with a grim frown. Then he said, "Unless you got yourself a death wish, kid," He got up in Blitz's face as he said, "you and that little parasite had better get moving!"
He snarled and Blitz quickly walked away from him. Tar smiled as Blitz kept walking before continuing to wake the others of the herd. When they had walked a good deal away from him, Brock then said, "Sheesh, is that guy really ugly or what?"
"Well, let's just try and not to antagonize him anymore." Blitz suggested. Brock nodded as Blitz had a pretty good point. But when he turned to his left, the Scavenger saw a familiar face and grabbed his adopted nephew's horn while saying, "Hey, hey, hey, there's your girlfriend over there."
Blitz looked to where he was pointing and Brock moved up on Blitz's head a little. They saw Dragara walking amongst some Gronkles, and was followed by a couple of smaller Pokémon. Blitz smirked and asked, "What are you talking about, Brock?"
"You know what I'm talking about…" Brock said as they looked to the Dragonite. He patted his adopted nephew's head as he said, "Dragara." He then listed, "Scaley skin. Blue eyes. Cute little antenna on her head."
"Yeah, I made a real good impression on her yesterday." Blitz sarcastically said before snorting in annoyance. Thinking he could help the Flame Pokémon, Brock then said with a little pride, "What you need here is a little help from the love Mouse Pokémon."
"Uh, 'The love Mouse Pokémon?' What's that?" Blitz asked as he glanced back to his adopted uncle. Brock then shouted, "Ow, baby!"
He started barking like a dog Pokémon and it caused everyone to look to him and the Charizard. Then chittering like a monkey Pokémon, he moved to hide behind Blitz's head. Even Dragara and the two smaller Pokémon looked back when Brock started meowing like a cat. Blitz gave an awkward smile as he reached behind him and covered his uncle's mouth with his talons. He chuckled even though he could see that the Dragonite was slightly offended by it. Looking down to the smaller Pokémon, Dragara then sarcastically told them, "That, little ones, is what is known as a Poké-jerk."
Dragara started to walk off while the two smaller Pokémon gave one final glance to the Charizard. Blitz sighed in embarrassment and watched as all three walked away. Moving to where he could see, Brock thought that he had done a good job when he said, "And with that, the ice has been broken."
Blitz glanced up to his adopted uncle with a slight glare and said, "Please don't help me anymore, Uncle Brock."
"No promises there, kiddo." Brock shrugged with a smile. But before more could be said, the sound of roaring came from the front of the group. They looked to see Tar roaring again and the majority of the Pokémon herd started to gather around him. Glancing back, Blitz and Brock saw the others coming up from behind. They all moved to stand with the herd. When they stood amongst the herd, they all saw Drudd join Tar at the head.
"We've got a lot of first-timers here, Tar." Drudd said as he walked up next to the Tyranitar. He was firm when he said, "Make sure they get it." He glanced at everyone as he said, "We stop for nothing…" His gaze set on a particular Charizard at the front of the group when he added, "and for no one."
"Right." Tar nodded as he understood. Blitz raised a brow when he saw Drudd looking right at him. Drudd took a step back as Tar turned and addressed the Pokémon herd, "If this here is your first crossing, then shut up and listen up." Blitz and the others glanced about to see everyone murmuring or chittering. Tar then continued, "There is no water until we reach the other side." Then he warned, "And you had better keep up, because if a predator Pokémon catches you with its teeth, then you're on your own." Then he ordered, "Now move out!"
Both he and Drudd let loose roars to get everyone moving and everyone started to follow them. Everyone moved in a tight formation as Drudd and Tar led them into the desert. Blitz let the rest of his family climb on while the three walked up next to them. The Druddigon glanced about before shaking his head with a snort. Aurora looked out into the desert and the rising sun while saying, "Oh, my goodness. It looks like it's going to be a very long walk for us."
"And a hot one at that." Donna added as they started walking. Donna then warned, "If you smell something starting to sizzle, then it might be me."
Blitz looked out into the desert before taking a deep breath and started walking as well. Dragons chittered, bellowed, snorted as they walked through the scorching desert.
The herd walked by large rock formations of all shapes and sizes as they went by. But no one stopped to take a look for fear of being left behind. Donna panted from the heat after walking for so long. Blitz lifted his wings to keep the hot sun off of his family to keep them from getting sunburned. When he too was starting to feel exhausted, Blitz looked up to the sun to see that it was almost midday. Taking a deep breath, Blitz kept going.
Watching over the herd as they went by, Drudd too was looking up at the sun. He thought about how they weren't going to cover much distance at the pace everyone was walking. With a huff, Drudd turned to Tar and said, "We're moving too slow. We need to go faster if we're going to cover much ground."
"I'll pick up the pace." Tar gruffly said before turning to the herd and letting loose a roar. The herd knew what the roar meant and started to walk a little bit faster. But while some were able to keep moving, exhaustion was starting to overcome the old and the younger Pokémon. From her spot, Dragara and the two young Pokémon, a couple of Axew. Noticing how tired they were looking, Dragara said, "Hop on, you two. I can carry you for a while."
The two little Tusk Pokémon cooed at this before climbing onto the Dragonite's back. They both hung on tight and squealed their Pokémon names to let her know they were ready. With a grin she started to walk with the Pokémon herd again.
The herd continued to walk through the night too thanks to their leader. They had come across a more sandy section of the desert during their travels. One of those in the back was starting to fall behind. Donna was really exhausted from all the walking and panted as she started going down the sand dune instead of staying with the others. Luckily, she had someone looking out for her as Sam came scampering down the sand dune. Gently placing a hand on her cheek he said, "Hey, old girl. You're wandering off a bit there."
"Just what I need." Donna said as she turned to walk up the sand dune. She and Sam walked side by side and she said, "A chittering mouse telling me what to do."
Sam just huffed while walking with her. The entire herd was walking along the top of a sand Tar and traveled in a straight line. When they started stepping off the sand dune, one Pokémon dropped dead from exhaustion and Blitz stopped before it. He felt bad for the Pokémon since how it had been forced to keep going. Blitz and his family looked to their new friends, Donna and Aurora mostly since they too had been walking without rest for a while. With a sigh, Blitz was about to say something when a familiar chittering sound came from behind. He glanced back to see that the Salandits were following the Pokémon herd's trail. They said their Pokémon when they saw the moving herd, but even more so at the meal that was presented to them. When those at the back crossed over the sand dune is when the Salandits made their move. They walked up to the dead Pokémon and started to feast.
The Pokémon herd continued to walk as the sun rose again the next day. And like the day before, the sun was just as unmerciful as it shined down on them. They climbed over another sand dune while a few of the Pokémon herd kept watch for signs of danger. By the point of midday, Donna started to give out from exhaustion and groaned as she collapsed on the sand. Blitz walked up to her and started to help push her back on her feet as he said, "Come on. On your feet, Donna." He strained as he pushed and said, "We can't let those things back there…" He pushed with all his might when he said, "eat you.
"They're out there waiting." Blitz added as she rose to her feet again. When Donna started moving again, Blitz quickly looked about for any signs of the Salandits. When he didn't see anything, he kept on going.

Back at the Salandits and their meal, they had nearly picked clean all the meat from the dead Pokémon's bones. But suddenly the scent of something new, big and dangerous puts them all on alert. When two of them sees what's coming the majority of the pack quickly made a run for it with a shriek. Confused, the last Salandit takes a look before it's eyes widened and it too ran after its friends with a shrill cry.
A couple of low growls came from the bottom of the sand dune as two Tyrantrums made their way up the side. They looked down at the dead Pokémon's bones and saw how there was barely any meat left on them. The two Tyrantrums were about to eat the remains of the dead Pokémon when they looked down at the sand surrounding the bones. They saw that a good number of Pokémon tracks going along the dune and across the desert. Thinking that they had a potential feast in their future, the two Despot Pokémon walked past the picked corpse and followed after the trail.

Author's Note: I'm just going to go ahead and stop the chapter here. In the next chapter, the lake is going to be vastly different. For starters, it won't be bone dry, there'll be water. But it won't be up for grabs for the herd just yet because it's about high time that I introduced a concept that I think you've all been waiting for. If you can tell me what it is, I'll let you know if you're correct. I look forward to reading your reviews. Be sure to leave a comment either about if I've done something wrong or if you want something specifically to happen. See you next time.
