Chapter Nine: A Crowded Lake
It was nearing midday for the Pokémon herd when they were reaching the edge of the desert. The sand crunched beneath their talons and toes when they all came to a stop. All the Pokémon in the middle and the back started murmuring to each other about what was going on. At the head of the herd, Drudd and Tar looked about before looking to each other when they recognized the area they were in. They nodded to each other before they threw their heads back and let loose some roars to get their Pokémon herd moving again. The herd starting moving again and Dragara looked up to where her brother and friend were and she too instantly recognized the area. Everyone in the Pokémon started grunting, chittering to each other or saying their Pokémon names. But amongst everyone, the most happiest to be there was Donna as she too recognized the area and shouted, "The lake!"
"Huh? We made it?" Sam asked with a chuckle. Donna glanced to the Pikachu on Aurora's back and said, "It's just over that big hill, you guys. We're almost there."
But as Drudd's Pokémon herd was nearing the top of the hill, they started hearing a lot more Pokémon names and roars coming from the other side. The herd reached the top of the hill and were amazed from what they were seeing.
The lake, not bone dry like the desert behind them, was full of water and had plants growing all around it. And hanging about the lake were other large herds of Pokémon. While Blitz, his family and many in the herd were very surprised to see this many Pokémon here, Donna, Drudd, Tar and Dragara were greatly surprised and confused to see this many herds here. Dragara walked up to Drudd with the two young Pokémon following behind her. Dragara looked to her adopted brother and asked, "What's going on?"
"I'm not sure." Drudd shook his head. Then looking to his adopted sister he said, "Stay here with the Riolu twins and the rest of the herd. Tar and I will see what's up."
Both the Druddigon and the Tyranitar both started walking down hill to the other herds of Pokémon. Back with Blitz, his family and their new friends, the Charizard looked to Donna and asked, "Have you seen this many herds here?"
"Hardly ever." The Bastiodon shook her head. With a shrug of her shoulders she said, "This hardly ever happens, but it when it does…"
Everyone noticed here stop in midsentence and looked to her. Aurora leaned her head down to her friend and asked, "What is it, Donna?"
"It only happens in times of great disaster." Donna finished what she was saying. Everyone knew what she was talking about and look back down at the crowded lake. Then she added, "And a tournament for a spot to the water is about to begin."
"Think we should go and tell Drudd?" Blitz asked her. But Donan shook her head again, "Oh, they're going to be finding out soon enough as it is."
"So, what happens exactly during one of these 'tournaments' as you say?" Brock asked while making air quotes with his paws. Donna snorted and said, "Wouldn't really expect you island folk to understand." Then laying down the rules she said, "Judging by the number of all these herds, then it's going to be a tight contest. The chosen Pokémon champions of each herd will join in a brawl against the member of another herd. If a champion from one of the herds wins the whole thing, then their herd will have first dibs at the lake."
"Who all can join in?" Brock asked with intrigue. Sam looked to his son and said, "You are not participating."
"Why not?" Brock asked with a shrug of his shoulders. Then gesturing to his family, friends and the rest of the Pokémon herd he said, "I'm part of this herd." Then a little arrogantly he added, "I bet I could win this thing all by myself and with both paws tied behind my back."
"I have heard that some Pokémon have died during these tournaments." Donna put in. Brock suddenly became scared and said, "So, yeah, I'll be rooting for our champions from the side."
While Cynthia and Bonnie laughed a little, Blitz looked down the hill as he watched Drudd and Tar walked down the hill. A lot of thoughts were running through the Charizard's head about what was happening.

Down the hill, Drudd and Tar carefully came upon the Pokémon herds. Some of Pokémon already around the lake looked to the approaching two before looking up at the Pokémon herd behind them. A few of the Pokémon heads, got up and walked over. Of the heads of herds, one was a green lizard with a leafy, bushy tail, another was a purple snake with a wide hood with golden markings on their body, the third looked like a rock with claws, a fourth looked kind of like some of the Tropius in their group, only this one didn't have leaf-like wings but two antenna and petals around their neck. The final head of one of the Pokémon herds looked like a giant, black and white ferret with grey furs on its torso, arms and legs. Meganium looked between the two and said, "I didn't think there would be any more Pokémon herds coming to the lake around this time."
"Hey, doesn't look like there's many fighters except for a few." The Obstagoon said with a smirk. This caused both Drudd and Tar to look at the Block Pokémon with glares. The Arbok just scoffed and said, "Don't pay him any mind. He just likes to get rowdy."
"But we're all getting a little rowdy." The Sceptile pointed out and crossed his arms. The Barbaracle agreed and said, "True. We have yet to begin the contest to decide who will get control of the water."
"Are we sure that we have enough room to let them join?" The Meganium asked the other leaders and tilted her head. Looking to the two she said, "I doubt that they've even picked out their champions just yet."
"How long are you willing to wait?" Drudd asked, not wanting to let his herd go any longer without some water. The other Pokémon leaders looked to each other and the Obstagoon said, "We'll give you one hour to pick at least five champions to compete in the tournament."
"Deal." Both Drudd and Tar said before turning back to their Pokémon herd.

The Pokémon herd of Drudd gathered around when he said that he had news. The Druddigon informed, "If we want a chance to some of this water, then we'll have to compete for it."
"So we're going to need fighters." Tar said as he looked about the herd. Gesturing to himself and Drudd he said, "The two of us have already decided to represent this herd, anyone else willing to."
Their Pokémon herd looked about and spoke amongst themselves. Drudd and Tar looked to each other with annoyed glances when a voice called out, "I will compete."
Everyone looked to see Blitz walking to the head of the crowd. Cynthia ran up to her adopted son and questioned, "Blitz, are you sure about this?"
"I am, Mom." Blitz said and looked down at the Raichu. Glancing between her and the crowd he said, "We've been walking a while. And we need that water."
Without another word, Blitz walked through the crowd and stood before Drudd and Tar. Both heads glanced to each other before nodding to allow Blitz to compete. Tar looked out to the crowd of Pokémon and said, "Anyone else? Speak up now, or forever hold your peace."
"I will!" Two voices said at the same time. Everyone looked back to the crowd to see both Brock and Dragara making their way to the head of the herd. Drudd looked to his adopted sister and questioned, "What do you think you're doing?"
"What? You think girl Pokémon can't fight?" Dragara asked back. Drudd opened his mouth to say something, but was cut off when Brock hopped up onto Blitz's shoulder and said, "Ah, ah! Trick question, my friend."
Dragara gave Drudd a confident smile knowing that she had won the argument. The Druddigon gave a defeated sigh and looked to Tar, "I guess we have our champions."
"I guess." Tar shrugged. The Tyranitar then said, "Alright, listen up! The other leaders of the other Pokémon are saying that no one will touch the water until the tournament is over." With a scary look he added, "And I don't want to hear about anyone trying to get a free drink until this is over. Otherwise, you'll be answering to me!"
The Pokémon herd looked to each other with nervous glances but all nodded in agreement. Drudd took over by saying, "Now, let's head down there and take our spots!"
A lot of Pokémon names, roars and screeches ran through the herd. With Drudd, Tar, Dragara, Blitz and Brock taking the lead, they headed back down the hill to the other Pokémon herds.

Author's Note: I know that this chapter is really short, but the fun is coming up in the next chapter. That's right; Pokémon battles. There will be a few bouts, plus my favorite song from the Pokémon franchise playing for the beginning of the battles. I look forward to reading your reviews. Be sure to leave a comment either about if I've done something wrong or if you want something specifically to happen. See you next time.
