I see Jack enter the bedroom with concern written all over his face while I'm on the phone making the best of the resources I have with some of my influential friends.
"Constantine will you please let me know when you get any information, I need to know for certain."
"Lisa, I'm sending my right hand man to you. Listen to him and do as he asks and he will get to the bottom of this faster than anyone on earth."
"Mr. Phillips right."
"Yeah, Patrick will advise you what to do, any resources you need he'll get it. You have my word."
Jack's hands on my shoulders messaging them as he usually does just to make sure I know his there with me.
"I've got to go. Jack's here, I need to fill him in."
"Good luck Lisa, with everything. I pray you get the outcome want but prepare for the worst and hope for the best. Talk soon."
"Thank you for everything Constantine. Bye."
"Lisa what is going on, you look shattered? Did something happen to Ben or your sister? Jack's concern is evident as he turns me around and holds my face in the palm of his hands.
"No, it's not them. But I need to tell you something. A secret I've been keeping from you."
Jack squint glances me and retorts "You're some type of Mafia boss and now everyone has found out."
I can't help but smile at his attempt to make me laugh. His job done as a small chuckle escapes me wishing it was that because what I'm about to tell him will have a huge effect on our relationship one way or another. I leave his arms and stand at the huge bedroom window that ahas an almost panoramic view of Fairfield as I contemplate how to tell him I was pregnant with his children.
Jack makes his way toward me standing behind me but not touching me just letting me know his there and that he'll wait until I'm ready. The only problem is I don't think I will ever be ready to tell him but I know I need to. More importantly he has a right to know especially in light of the recent events.
Jack sees me stop and start more than a dozen times without my voice being able to produce any sort of sound.
"Just start anywhere Lise, you'll get to what you really need to tell me along the way."
"Do you remember our time apart after I broke things off with you."
"Yes, Lisa I'm not likely to ever forget those many many months of despair without you."
"I broke things off with you because I wasn't entirely sure where I fit in your life, Jack. I was thirty-three and didn't know where I belonged in Canada or in France. You know my business necessitates me traveling for Fairfiled's breedtstock. Every time I left you it was harder and harder. The worst was usually when I didn't know what was going on with you and sometimes that made me feel like I wasn't part of your life. When I came back we'd get back into a routine and I'd be fine again but I wasn't sure if I could handle the constant back and forth and being out of the loop with you."
"Lisa you know it was as hard on me as it was on you, but I would never ask you to stop traveling. I know it's a part of who you are just the same as me being tethered to Heartland is a part of me."
"Yeah, I let the many difference we have push me away from you because I thought it'd be easier if I ripped the band aid off once and for all."
"Lisa you had every reason too. I was and am twenty-five years older then you, not to mention our lifestyles, I'm a working class cattle rancher with a homebody lifestyle and you're an upper class horse breeder with a jet set lifestyle."
I turn around into Jack's arms and run the back of my fingertip across his stubble jaw. I'm so use to it now that I can't fathom his face ever being clean shaven for an extended period. His moustache twitches upwards and I can see the smile that lights up my life.
Jack takes my hand from his face and brushes his lips and moustache across the back of it before gently kissing it.
"I'm not going anywhere Lise, just tell me what you need to so we can deal with it together."
I disentangle myself from Jack before heading back to the window to overlook Fairfield to give to the courage to tell him.
"We broke up that April and by the end of the month I'd left for France after the fire and Georgie trying to run away. I was in France two weeks before I found out I was almost six weeks pregnant."
I hear Jack's sharp intake of breath before I turn to see his stunned acknowledgement of my revelation.
"Lisa… why…..why didn't you tell me?"
Jack is now laser focused on me and I can see the clogs in his head working to solve what I just told him.
"I didn't tell you because we weren't together anymore and I didn't want you to feel trapped into a relationship with me just because I was pregnant with your child."
The agony on Jack's face is unbearable. "Lise…..I would never have felt that way."
"Since the second week in April before our breakup, I was extremely exhausted, nauseas and could get a good night sleep in. You remember you found me on this very bed napping one afternoon when I was meant to meet you at Heartland."
"I thought you had a one of those late night business calls and didn't think anything of it."
"My doctor in France had me make an appointment at ten weeks for a scan to make sure everything was going okay. I'll never forget that day Friday, fifteenth, June 2012, the doctor had his probe on my stomach for a full five minutes before uttering any sort of reassurance, all the while his eyes getting bigger by the minute before he grinned like a Cheshire cat before he said congratulations you're having triplets, Lisa. I came very close to passing out right then and there."
Jack staggers backwards to the bed before sitting down and just staring at me in a daze.
"I was ten weeks pregnant but looked more like I was four months. I was worried I was over eating but it turns out being pregnant with triplets everything is much more intense including how much you eat and how early you show."
I can see the light bulb go off in Jack head, his soft, gentle, green eyes now filled with tears.
"Did you write the letter after you found out you were carrying triplets?"
I nod my head to confirm his assumption.
"Lise, I got your letter by the end of June. You asked if there was a chance we could bridge the gap between us."
"When I didn't get a reply, I figured that was your way of giving me an answer that we didn't have a chance at all."
Jack got up and walked towards me taking my face in his hands.
"Lisa I got the letter at the end of June that year but I only got the courage to read it on February 14, 2013. I swear to you Lise, that I didn't even open it until that day never mind read it."
My hand covers my mouth in shock before acknowledging that dreadful day.
"That's the day you had your heart attack. The letter gave you the heart attack. "
"Noooo nothing like that…..No, Lise, the letter was me realising that I lost my chance with you because I was too scared to open it when it came. If I didn't open the letter, it meant there was still chance for us. I thought for sure the letter was about telling me you'd moved on and to say your final goodbye to me."
"After I sent you the letter traveled back to Alberta. I wasn't sure if I could travel for very much longer so decided to make Alberta home base until the babies came. I stayed mostly in the house office and ventured outside in the evenings when only my very close Fairfield employees were the only ones in the vicinity of the house.
My doctor in France sent me to a colleague of his in Calgary and my progress although difficult was going well as could be expected with triplets. In July my sister and Ben visited Fairfield and the cat was out the bag with then two of them. They were both thrilled and both my sister and Ben encouraged me the tell you. I made week twenty-eight of the pregnancy the week to let you know, it was when they said the babies would be viable and I knew you had a right to know. On week twenty-seven, Thursday 11, October, I miscarried them."
The tears Jack had been able to hold back dripped into the stubble of his jaw.
"The phone call form Detective Constable Keller was to acquire my DNA along with your's to test for a possible match."
Jack's confusion written all over his anguished features.
"Lisa….I don't understand a DNA to match what."
"Jack the phone call was to inform me that I may have been a victim of infant kidnapping and there could be a possibility they could be alive."
"Lisa you said you miscarried the babies."
"I was told I miscarried the babies. I was under anaesthesia and don't remember anything. I woke up five days after everything."
Both Jack and I startle at the knock on the door.
"What is it Craig?"
"Ms. Stillman, Mr. Phillps and his team are down stairs."
"We'll be down momentarily."
I feel a sense of relief that I have someone who can help me get answers.
Both Jack and I head down as I inform him that Patrick and his team can hopefully give us answers to the questions we need answered.
Patrick introduces us to his team while they setup in the main lounge and dinning area. Patrick immediately gets both Jack and I get give multiple salivas swab samples, and now we are both getting our blood taken by one of his team. My brain in overload to remember the woman's name.
"I apologize for the volume off the swabs and blood taken, we want to have every angle covered to proceed in an expeditious manner if needed."
"Do you have any information Patrick," I ask as soon as we're done with the blood samples.
Patrick has us seat before offering an answer.
"Ma'am in the three hours that we've been on this we have accumulated a vast amount of information. Ma'am, take a look at these pictures."
"Both Jack and I gasp in shock to see blended reflections of ourselves in these pictures."
Jack and I both stare at the pictures as we drink in the first visualising of our children. Jack clasps his hand within mine and treads his fingers between them where its sat on his thigh.
"With all the other investigative pieces it is very likely they are your children. We can only be one hundred percent certain by doing the DNA tests. As you've both noticed all three boys have a very strong resemblance to both you and your husband. The blonde haired, green eyed boy name is Lincoln. The black haired, blue eyed boy name is Zackary and last one with brown hair, different colour eyes, one blue, one green his name is Grayson. "
"Ma'am we'll need your lawyer to work with ours to get the ball rolling on immediate custody. We'll need your marriage certificate and financial records to prove you able to provide a stable home for the boys."
"Simon my lawyer has all the info you need. His at the barn office, I'll get him here."
"No, need Ma'am we'll get him."
"How did you manage to get all of this on such short notice."
"Ma'am, Mr. Alexander has friends in high places and he also donates millions to the Toronto Police Service. He called the TPS chief of police and not very politely demand that the Criminal Investigation Bureau share their information on the infant kidnapping ring that his dear friend Lisa Stillman was a victim off or he will pull all funding and will personally actively protest to have both agency's shutdown for incompetence."
Jack laughed since he knew how vociferous Constantine can be when he wants something done.
"That sounds exactly like Constantine. I just want to thank all of you for doing this for us," Jack said.
"You are both very welcome, Sir. But this is just the beginning there will no doubt be many hurdles to overcome before the permanent uncontested custody can be confirmed. "
