For the first time in a long time, Jack and I both feel shell-shocked. The great room has always been a place where we have spent time to exhale and recharge. It's a place to be alone together and has no distractions from the outside world a place safe from everything and everyone.
Jack can't bring himself to release me from the safety of his arms. He is shaking, and he is sweating, but he does not want to move them. He knows he doesn't have any powers that could have prevented this from happening.
The revelation of how things were meant to unfold with the end result being my death was the last straw for Jack. This latest news has left Jack staggered and agitated whereas earlier he was heartbroken, horrified, and angered that the boys were snatched from us.
It's my fault Jack has so much new information to process today. I need to help him through this, I can't have anything happen to him. My focus needs to be on Jack at this moment in time and not my emotions about what transpired that fateful day.
We both need the comfort of each other right now to try and ease our minds. The thoughtful silence that has enveloped us is filled with a hope we dare not speak out loud.
That silence is broken by Patrick along with Harmon his right-hand man. The exhilaration in their movements must mean something significant has occurred.
"Ma'am, Sir, all your DNA samples that were sent for testing have a positive match to the boys'." The noticeable dimple that accompanies Patrick's smile as he delivers the news to us is something I will always remember.
"What are our next steps?" Jack voices before I could.
"Harmon will be here and liaise with you while I and a few of the team along with Keller travel to Toronto to try and get you temporary custody of the boys with the proof we've now attained through the DNA tests."
"When will you leave?" I asked as I'm anxious for the next steps to be done as expediently as possible.
"Ma'am with your permission we'd like to use your resources of the helicopter and plane as they are strategically closer and get us moving to Toronto immediately."
"You don't have to ask Patrick it's yours do with as you need. I assume Craig has given you both pilots' contact information and you've already had them on standby."
"Yes, Ma'am all we needed was your go-ahead."
"Well, as I've stated before you have permission to use any resource of mine no matter how big or small."
"Ma'am there are very likely transactions that will have to be made to get things processed with the immediacy that we'd like. If we can't manage them we will place a call to you to get the ball rolling."
"I understand Patrick and I already have my banker on standby for whatever needs to be done." I can feel Jack's gaze on me as the conversation turns to transactions. He must know I will do anything to get the boys back.
"Very well, hopefully, the next time I see you and Mr. Bartlett I will have the privilege of delivering you your boys'."
"Craig has a package that you need to collect before you leave Patrick." Patrick gives me a knowing look before he takes his leave with Harmon.
Lisa and I might have our sons with us soon. I can't believe that things have moved so quickly and that we have confirmation of a DNA match. Lisa's eyes furrowed deep within her usually serene face obviously lost in thought, I need to know what is runnin' through her head.
"Lise, where is your head at?"
I see her try and shake off the cobwebs of her thoughts.
"Jack you need to tell the girls. You've been here since this morning I'm sure they are worried about where you've been anyway."
I run my hands along the outside of my pockets trying to locate my phone.
"Lise hand me your phone."
"Why?"
"Ahh.. So I can tell the girls as you said."
"Jack you can't do it over the phone, you need to go over there and tell them."
"Okay, I guess you're right."
Lisa's body releases a sigh which I assume is relief at my abiding by her request.
I take Lisa's hand so we can get going and get this done. A look of confusion and her reluctance to move with me has me guessing we are not on the same page.
"Jack I need to stay here in case Patrick or his team need something."
"You mean like money, I'm not deaf Lise I did catch the transaction convo."
Lisa holds her breath and her posture becomes rigid almost statue-like at my comment.
"Lisa I'm not going to fight you on this. I want our sons here yesterday and if money is what it takes I am not about to complain."
I feel Lisa's arms wrap around my waist long before I can process the release of tension falling off her body. She looks me in the eyes before getting up on her toes and bringing my face down to kiss me.
"Thank you, I know it's not the way you like things to be dealt with."
I take Lisa's face into my hands before locking my eyes onto those arctic blues wanting her to know that I too would do anything to get our son's back.
"I just want them with us Lise however we get them to us I don't care."
Her eyes close at my assent and it's enough to know the struggle she was having within herself at doing something that I readily admit I am generally immovable on.
Lisa unfolds herself from my embrace and sends me on my way to Heartland.
Driving into Heartland I'm not sure what I feel, excited, happy, anxious maybe a combination of all three to some level. I see Amy brushing down Spartan getting ready to head into the ranch house for supper.
In the house, I'm greeted by both Lyndy and Katie who go back to playing and reading respectively. I retreat to mine and Lisa's room to get my phone and a few things for the both of us before Amy knocks on my door asking if everything is okay with Lisa after this morning's phone call. Before I can get anything out we hear Lou greeting the girls from the kitchen.
I ask both Lou and Amy to join me on the porch.
I can see Lou's mind working a mile a minute before she gets out, "Grandpa is everything okay with Lisa?"
"Y….eeeeee….sss. Sort off."
That was complicated to answer. I see both Lou and Amy glance at each other in confusion. Before we get any further we see Tim pull up at the ranch gate.
"You'll want to take a seat girls for what I have to tell you."
I can hear Tim climb the stairs before voicing his absurd claim, "Are you and Lisa getting a divorce, is that what you want to tell the girls."
"No, you idiot but you might as well stay for this. I don't want to repeat it again."
Both the girls and Tim looked stunned after I revealed all that's happened not just today but what happened to Lisa the day of our children's birth.
"What a mess! When will you and Lisa be able to see them in person Jack?"
"Hopefully, soon. With the DNA confirmation as proof, we pray this gets everything moving faster."
"Well, congratulations are in order old man." Tim shakes my hand and hugs me in excitement.
Both Lou and Amy follow suit congratulating me.
I gave the girls the nod to tell Katie and Lyndy the cliffsnotes version of Lisa and me having sons before relaying I'll be staying out at Fairfield waiting for any news.
The girls and Tim say their goodnights to me before heading in.
Thank you for taking the time to read and comment.
