Alright here is chapter two of Something More, gotta say when I first started this I wasn't entirely sure but it's actually kinda fun writing fanfic. To answer some questions from the reviews the plot of my fanfic will be more or less similar to the canon of the show, Ooo doesn't have Finn there to protect them so a lot of things will be different but I won't mix it up too much. I've made Founder's Island a bit different too. And as for Finn, he possesses some booksmarts in him from Minerva's teachings, but he has yet to realize his potential as an adventurer and hero. And as for the rest, I don't want to spoil anything. Anyway in this chapter we meet big daddy Mertens and the Sarah girl mentioned in the last chapter. We also see a nice sea-food place that's popular with the people of Founders Island.

Enjoy!

Also I do not own 'Adventure Time' or it's characters.

Chapter 2

Island Tour

Minerva just finished making Finn breakfast when he came out of his room, rubbing the sleep out of his eyes.

"Good morning sweetie." His mom said when she saw Finn. "How did you sleep?"

Finn let out a loud yawn and sat down to eat. "Not all that good honestly, had a crazy dream a giant golden owl was trying to eat me or something."

Minerva formed a look of concern, her eyes went to static for a second before returning to normal. "Hmm, your brain activity really spiked during your REM stage of sleep last night. Do you feel fatigued for woozy?, I could fix you up a drink of vitamin-"

"No don't worry mom I feel fine, it was just bad dre-hey wait a minute." Finn put down the sausage he was about to eat and looked his mother in the eyes. "Please tell me you don't watch me while I sleep mom, that's just creepy."

"Of course not Finn, I would never do that. I respect your privacy."

'Really?' Finn thought. 'I'm pretty sure my phone has a tracker chip in it.'

"But I do have your vitals and internal activity scanned at all times when you're in the house."

'Okay, that's better but nowhere near good.' Finn gave his mom an annoyed look before continuing his breakfast.

Minerva sat down and smiled at his son. "So tomorrow is the big day, are you excited?" she asked.

Finn looked up from his breakfast and shrugged. "Yeah, I guess so."

Minerva frowned. "Well you don't sound too excited. You're turning eighteen, you're starting schooling, your heartbeat is steady and normal when it should be beating three times it's normal frequency."

Finn gave another shrug. "I don't see any reason to get too worked up over it, I'm about to do what I've always been destined to do. Freaking out over it isn't going to help anything."

Minerva's frown lightened, but didn't go away. "You should still be thinking of a way to celebrate, we could have the entire island throw you a party if you want."

"No mom I don't want to make too big a deal out of this." Finn told her. "I just want this final day to myself. No tests, no lectures, no 'son of the Great Minerva' junk. I just want today to be Finn's day."

Minerva's gaze softened. "Oh all right, go on and enjoy the day. Tomorrow though, we're going to celebrate a bit before starting your schooling. Deal?"

"Deal." Finn replied with a smile.

Once Finn finished his breakfast, showered, got dressed and brushed his teeth, Finn grabbed his dad's old jacket and headed for the door. Before he could leave though, Finn's mom stopped him.

"Hold on sweetie, while you're out and about I want you to return this book to the Library for me." she said, handing him a book she grabbed from the shelf.

Finn gave her a weird look. "Mom, you can access all of the information of the Library's records in just a few seconds and download any book digitally into your mental software. Why would you want to borrow a book from the Library, when the heck did you even borrow that book-" Finn immediately stopped talking upon realizing what his mom was up to.

"Ya know mom, I don't think I'll even go near the Library. I'll probably end up going to that seafood place, you know that one on the east side of the island, it's also the only seafood place on the island so it's kinda hard to miss-"

"Take the book or you're grounded."

"Yes mom."

Once he was out of the house Finn took a look at the book his mom gave him.

The title read The Blossoming of Love.

'Faithful Guardian, kill me now.' Finn thought, but as he walked off nothing happened.

The streets of Founder's Island were filled with people going about their lives, walking off to their jobs, opening up their shops and stands, going to grab a coffee and some breakfast at one of the cafes, one guy wearing overalls and a hardhat carrying large plunger let out a heavy sigh before he opened up one of the sewer manholes and crawled in. Everyone Finn passed by gave him a wave and a greeting, telling him good morning or thanking him for whatever it was he helped them with. Finn was always ready to help out whoever needed it, if one of the Minerva-bots didn't beat him to it Finn would normally help out anybody who had an issue that needed resolved. Everything from carrying heavy loads to fixing any broken equipment. (compliments of Dr. Gross and Minerva teaching him so much about tech, though sometimes Finn would need to call over one of the Minerva-bots to help him finish the job if the task proved too difficult for him). Finn also possessed a bit of medical skill, he knew how to mend a broken bone and what medicine to suggest to a sick person to take. Finn was quite beloved by the people of the island, they were all eager to see him rise to success next to his mother. Nobody would say it aloud, but Finn suspected the people were hoping that Minerva would replace Dr. Gross with Finn as her number two. 'Wouldn't be the worst thing to happen.' was Finn's thought on that.

Finn walked by the seafood place on his way to the Library (Finn realized the lie he tried to tell his mom was poorly constructed). The place was called The Guardians Gauntlet, called so because the place was actually made from a prototype Guardian hand, and has been around since his mom was a little girl. The story went that one day way back when, a large hand washed up on the shore off Founder's island. The people began to freak out thinking the Guardian was falling apart but after a few Experimenters took a look at it, they came to the conclusion that it was just an old prototype part due to its smaller size and older style mechanics. The Experimenters were about to scrap it but one of the lesser Experimenters had another idea for it. The Experimenter worked with the Edible Marine Life Catching Unit and he said he wanted to turn the giant hand into a seafood eatery. It took a lot of arguing, but as it would happen the Experimenters dad was one of the Leaders and he managed to have the giant hand turned into a seafood diner, which the Experimenter ran successfully to this day.

The Guardians Gauntlet was an open counter type of eatery, with a bunch of umbrella stand tables around the large, green and grey, metal hand. A large rectangle was cut out of the hands big wrist, a wooden countertop was laid on the bottom of the rectangular hole and a large roll up lean to at the top, and behind it a bunch of equipment and fish hat wearing cooks could be seen. The old Experimenter who ran the place was named Jack Willow, nowadays though everyone called him Old Man Willow. Finn could see the old man outside his diner, barking orders at the fish hat wearing waitress girls he hired. When he saw Finn, a big smile formed on his face and he waved at him to come over.

Finn walked over to the diner, trying to keep his blush down as the waitress girls smiled and giggled at him. "Finn my boy, how's it going!" Old Man Willow exclaimed. Jack Willow wasn't very tall, a head shorter than Finn, but twice as broad in the shoulders. His bald head was covered by a blue shark hat, along with his big black beard he had a fierce enough appearance but his wrinkly old face always seemed to have a smile on it. The white apron he was wearing over a grey shirt and black pants was stained horribly.

Finn gave the old man a smile. "It's going good Mr. Willow." Finn addressed him formally out of respect but he doubted Willow would have cared either way. "Just enjoying the day, on my way to return this book."

Old man Willow gave a hearty laugh. "Hah hah hah! Trying ta shake off the nerves fer tomorrow eh?" his voice sounded like he gargled with salt water. "And yer hoping little sweet Sarah will help that? Can't say I blame you, and you're doing it right my boy, thar's nothing like a woman's touch to help calm a man's nerves."

Finn's face lit up like a red light and the waitress girls around giggled even more. "I'm just returning a book Mr. Willow, also…" He spoke with a softer voice so as to not be overheard. "I'm also going to visit my dad."

A worried frown formed on the old man's face. "Ah Finn, I know I've got no place ta tell ya yer business, but yer a good kid, a day from being a good man. You oughta just forget that no good deadbeat." he spoke with a hushed tone.

"Maybe, but he is my dad. It doesn't feel right to just abandon him out of my life." Finn replied.

Old Man Willow let out a heavy. "Ah Finn, may the Founders bless ya. Alright boyo, you do whatcha need ta do, but before ya go." Willow grabbed a bag out the hands of a guy wearing a squirrel hat who just got his order. "Take this, it's-" he looked in the bag "Calamari steak, on the house my boy."

"But that was mine."

"Can it Steve!"

Steve left.

Finn took the bag, feeling a bit bad about stealing Steve's food. "Thanks Mr. Willow, you have a good one." he said before leaving.

"You too boyo!" replied Willow with a wave.

"Byyyyyye Fiiiiiiiiinn!" the girls said in unison. Finn gave them a wave and turned back around before his blush could come back.

After a bit of walking Finn made it the Library. He stopped in front of the building, Finn had been to the building over a hundred times but he still couldn't help but admire the large structure in front of him. The Library of Founder's Island was one of the first buildings constructed when the Founders colonized the island. The large two story building looked like an elegant courthouse, built of white stone, with large steps that led between two large columns. The Library was filled with hundreds of years of island history and novels, plus any novel or historical document that the Founders managed to save from the era before the Apocalypse, the disastrous series of events that turned their original homeland into a barren wasteland. The story was different depending on who you asked but the moral of it was always the same.

Mankind destroyed themselves.

Finn walked into the building, the bag of calamari in one hand and the book in the other. The inside of the Library was quite the sight, bookshelves on his left and right stood ten feet tall, a long marble desk sat in the center flanked by a pair of curved stairs led to the top floor, where more bookshelves stood. The Library wasn't very busy today, a few people sitting on one of the chairs, reading a book or magazine. A pair of Minerva-bots wandered the top and bottom floor, organizing books and watching out for any trouble.

Finn walked up to the front desk thinking to himself, 'Maybe she won't be there, she might have the day off today, or she might be in the back rearranging someth- ah crap there she is.' Yup there she was, sitting behind the desk, typing away at the computer. Sarah was so engrossed in her work she didn't even notice Finn walk up to her. Sarah Cornell wore a black and grey owl hat on her head, though a strand of her ruby red hair peaked out from beneath her hat and laid between the circular lenses of her glasses. She wore a lime green dress shirt that was complimented by a pair of white pants. A lot of the guys on the island thought that she was pretty cute but none of them had the courage to ask her out. The Cornells have been the masters of the Library for centuries, a tradition that Sarah's parents have apparently been grooming her for. Sarah fit the bill pretty well; bookish and quite literate, she made for a good Librarian.

Finn gave a tiny cough to get Sarah's attention. "Yes how may I help-Finn!" she exclaimed upon realizing who she was talking to. A slight blush formed on her freckled cheeks.

"Hey Sarah, how's it going?" Finn asked with a smile, a bit of a blush beginning to form on his face as well.

"Going good, going good. Just doing… you know… book stuff." Sarah replied awkwardly.

"Good to hear, Uh, I have a book here to return." Finn sounded as awkward as Sarah did. Sarah took the book from Finn, she looked at the title of the book and her blush intensified.

"My mom borrowed it. Wanted me to return it." Finn said quickly, his own face getting more red as well. The whole island shipped the two of them, Minerva and the Cornells included, and Finn and Sarah both knew it.

"O-Okay then, I'll just fill out the return form for the book." Sarah turned back toward the computer and began typing away. "Lets see, The Blossoming of Love, written by Sonya Higgens… it says here your mom borrowed it last night."

'She seriously borrowed a book in the middle of the night while I was asleep just to hook me up with a date?… yeah that sounds about right.' Finn thought.

A Minerva-bot came over once Sarah was done with the form and took the book to return to its place on the shelves. Finn could swear he saw its eyes gesture towards Sarah when it looked at him.

Finn scratched the back of his head. "Thanks Sarah, I better get going, I'm visiting my dad today."

Sarah frowned. "You still go and see him?, I'm surprised you still bother with that guy."

"He's my dad Sarah, what kind of person would I be if I just cut him out from my life?"

"Some people might say a smart one."

"What do you say?"

Sarah sighed, then looked up at Finn. "I say you're too sweet for your own good." she replied with a smile.

Finn rubbed the back of his head again and let out a nervous chuckle. "Gee uh, thanks Sarah… I uhh, better get going." Finn turned around and began to walk away.

"Finn, wait!"

Finn froze, then turned around. Sarah was standing now, she rubbed her hands nervously. "I-I-I have something I wanted to give you for your birthday, I was gonna wait until tomorrow but, since you're here." Sarah reached into her pocket and pulled out a gold coin. "This is an old artifact, from before the Apocalypse. I guess it used to be a form of currency people used, the records mention using silver coins, but nothing about gold. Maybe that just means it was worth more."

Sarah offered him the coin.

Finn stared at the coin. "Sarah, I couldn-"

"Go ahead and just take it Finn. I've lost the darn thing over a hundred times, figured it would be safer with you anyway."

Finn hesitated for a bit, then took the coin from Sarah's hand. He examined the gold coin, on one side a woman and her baby was engraved into and on the other side a soaring bird.

Thank you Sarah." Finn said with a smile.

Sarah stared at him a bit, tapping her fingers together anxiously.

Then she leaned over the desk and planted a kiss on Finn's cheek.

The both of them just stood there for a while, as if processing what just happened. Then Finn cleared throat.

"I uhhhh, I gotta go. Bye Sarah." he said before pocketing the coin and walking away.

"Bye Finn." Sarah replied softly.

Neither of them noticed the Minerva-bot peeking out from behind one of the shelves, a smile on its face.

Finn was on his way to see his dad, thinking about what happened at the Library. Finn had always valued his friendship with Sarah, ever since they were little. Truth be told, Sarah was Finn's best friend on the island, and vice versa. But, Finn never really felt that way about her. 'If not her then who?' was the conclusion he eventually came to. The thought depressed Finn a bit, his career was already set in stone, it seemed wrong that his love life be the same. Finn decided to try to stop thinking about it. He saw a couple of young kids playing up ahead, a brother and his sister by the looks of it. Finn stopped to watch them, figuring it might help take his mind off of Sarah.

The girl waved a stick at her brother, bonking him on the head. "Rawww, I'm Marceline the Vampire Slayer!" I will destroy you ya blood sucking monster!"

The boy rubbed his head. "Dangit, why can't I ever be Marceline?"

The girl placed her hands on her hips. "Marceline was a girl."

"You don't know that." replied the boy.

The two began to argue, and Finn chuckled at them before walking away. Marceline the Vampire Slayer, a parents favorite bedtime story to tell their children at night. According to the old bedtime story, as the survivors of the Apocalypse were escaping the mutant and monster infested world on their ship an angel named Marceline descended from above to protect them from a horde of vampires. The story was told differently by some people, one version of the story said Marceline was a demon the survivors summoned to protect them. Another version even said Marceline sang the vampires a lullaby and the survivors slipped away while the monsters were asleep. Finn didn't think much of the old story, most kids stopped believing the tale when they got older.

Finn finally arrived at his destination, The Holding Cells. A bleak grey rectangular concrete building with barred windows surrounded by an electric fence. This was where Hiders and other law breakers were kept before they were put into re-education. The place had a squadron of Seekers guarding it, Finn walked up to the pair of Seekers guarding the gate entrance. They nodded to him before the one on the right turned around and waved at the building, the gate entrance then swung open and Finn walked through, bag of calamari still in hand, before it closed back up. At the entrance of the building a Minerva-bot stood sentry. "State your business at The Holding Cells please." it asked.

"I am here to visit the inmate Martin Mertens." Finn replied.

The androids eyes glowed with a blue light before returning to normal. "Scan complete, no hazards found on person. Subject Finnegan Campbell. We have been expecting your arrival. This way please." The Minerva-bot opened the door and Finn followed it inside.

Inside the building, the walls, ceiling and floor were all starch white. Fluorescent lights in the ceiling illuminated the place, a couple of Seekers stood guard in front of multiple flights of stairs leading down below. The Minerva-bot led him down one flight and the Seekers followed. Once they reached the bottom they continued down the basement hall, passing cells both empty and filled. The inmates tried to talk Finn into getting them free.

"Hey kid, I don't belong here, I swear. I was framed."

"Look Finn, can't ya talk to your mom about giving me another chance. I swear I won't steal anymore, just don't put me through re-education."

"I just wanted to see what the outside world was like, is that really so bad?"

This continued until they reached the end of the hall, in the cell on the far end, sat Finn's father. Finn knew how Martin ended up here, his mom finally telling him when he was twelve. Before Minerva met him, Martin Mertens was a gambler and con-artist who had a racket of exposing Hiders after promising them a safe way off the islands. Martin would have the Hiders pay him up front, tell them where to be and at what time, then call the authorities, earning him a reward and good rep. But eventually, Martin ended up getting arrested himself, after one smart Hider insisted he come along to the escape site. Martin tried to escape but ended up with two broken legs, and ended up as Helper Minerva's patient. After a while, the unlikely couple fell in love, married and had a baby. And they were happy, for a few months. Some of the Hiders, an old lady and two of her goons managed to track Martin down to exact their revenge. However, Martin managed to convince them he knew exactly how to leave the island and get past the Guardian.

Martin's desperate ace in the hole turned out to be baby Finn, believing the Guardian wouldn't attack if they had Finn with them. So Martin and baby Finn, along with the old lady and her goons, got onto an old jerry-rigged motor boat and attempted an escape. Things went bad almost immediately. The mighty Guardian rose from the sea and threw his fist down onto the boat.

By this time the Seekers had become aware of the Hiders trying to escape and Minerva, upon realizing that Martin and Finn were gone, raced to the beach next to the Seekers and watched as the Guardian brought his fist down on the boat. It nearly broke the Helper to watch it all happen, she fell to her knees after the Guardian receded beneath the waves, praying for a miracle. And to the absolute shock of everybody, baby Finn washed up on shore, floating on a piece of broken boat, giggling happily at the sight of his mother. Minerva, overjoyed to see that her baby had survived, scooped up Finn and held him tightly, tears flooding out of her eyes like half open facets.

Shortly after Minerva was reunited with her baby, Martin washed up on shore spitting out seawater and coughing up a few fish. Old Man Willow once told Finn that it took three of the Seekers to pull Minerva away from Martin after she handed baby Finn to Kara and jumped on Martin, beating him to a pulp, throwing as many curses as she did punches. Martin was put into the Holding Cells, the old lady and her goons were presumed dead. Martin would have been put into re-education, but for whatever reason, Minerva convinced the authorities to just have Martin live the rest of his life in the Holding Cells. Maybe Minerva didn't have it in her to see her ex-husband put through reeducation, maybe she thought living the rest of his life in a cell was crueler, Finn never had the courage to ask. But there Martin remained, confined to a cell till the end of his days.

The man had not aged well, as to be expected from someone who lived in a prison cell. His long, dark blonde beard was dirty and unkept, his wrinkled bald head bore no hat, Martin was one of the few people of the islands who didn't follow the trend. The chubby man wore a one-piece black and white striped suit that marked him as prisoner. Martin was sitting on his bed, whistling to himself. When he saw Finn, he jumped to his feet and a big smile formed on his face.

"Finn my boy, it's good to see you! Man I swear you get a little bigger every time you come to visit! Still rocking my old jacket huh? Gotta say looks better on you than it ever did on me. How have ya been son?" The sight of the Minerva-bot seemed to make Martin uncomfortable so Finn asked it to wait at the other end of the hall, the android left and so did the Seekers, but not before giving Martin a dirty look.

Finn offered his dad a smile. "Hey dad, I hope you're comfortable here."

"Oh yeah, it's not as bad as it looks in here. You get used to the uncomfy bed, and you get a good view out the window." Finn looked up at the small window, it was too high up to actually see anything.

Martin rubbed the back off his head. "So son, how's your mom doing? I imagine she's been quite busy and productive, figure being the computerized chief of the island would get someone like her going hard and strong."

"Mom's doing fine." Finn replied "She still doesn't like me coming to visit you."

"Heh heh yeah, that sounds about right, hoo boy I can tell from experience that hell hath no fury like a pissed off wife."

"I don't think that's how the saying goes dad, but yeah I guess you're right."

Finn had been visiting his father for years now, and had come to hear the silver tongue he was so infamous for having. Every word Martin said made him sound more and more like a friendly guy you could always count on, when in truth he would rob you blind and scram if he got the chance. Minerva made sure to keep her son from becoming anything like his dad, changing his name from Finn Mertens to Finn Campbell and reading him stories of heroes protecting the weak and helpless and telling him how heroes made the world a better place. Minerva's efforts worked in full, but as it would turn out Finn inherited Martin's silver tongue, and quickly learned how persuasive he could be. But Finn never used that gift the way his father did, he only used it for good; helping two people who were about to rip each other's head off come to an agreement, convincing a greedy jerk to share with the less fortunate, that sort of thing.

Finn tried to keep the conversation going. "So dad, I turn eighteen tomorrow."

"No kiddin'!" exclaimed Martin, "Man how the time flies, I would have got ya something but, well, I can't really go for jog and grab something for ya."

"It's fine dad, but the thing is, once I start schooling tomorrow, I won't be able to visit you as often, or maybe not all. This might be the last time I see you."

Martin's face was unreadable, he stared at Finn for a while before looking to the floor. "Gee Finn, that… well that's probably for the best, you should be looking to your future and not to me. But I want ya to know Finn, I'm proud of ya son."

This surprised Finn, his dad actually sounded absolutely sincere, he couldn't detect a single trace of his silver tongue. "Thanks dad, that means a lot to me… you know when I get home, I could try to talk to mom about setting you free."

"No don't even try it Finn, It'll only tick your mom off and get you into trouble." Martin's response surprised Finn even more. "But hey chin up son, you're on your way to becoming a Helper, just like your mom. And hey, ya never know, I might get out of here someday."

Finn nodded, "Yeah… yeah I guess so." Finn checked the time on his phone. "Listen dad, I should get going. There's not much of the day left. Uh, hang in there, and know I'm hoping for the best for you." he said before handing him the bag of calamari.

Martin took the bag and smiled at his son. "Yeah you got a busy day tomorrow, go ahead and enjoy your last day of the simple life, I'll be here if you need me. As usual."

Finn smiled back at his father. "Bye dad." he said before walking away.

Martin watched as Finn walked off.

"Ya never know." he mumbled to himself.
