A tense and nearly nauseating feeling twisted up in both the devilman and devillady. Miko and Akira had met up only minutes ago and were already coming upon Moyuru Koda's hideout. As she directed him closer, Akira began to slow his motorbike down exponentially, doing all he could to go undetected.
At last, the large, abandoned warehouse was in view as well as the bulkhead doors that Miko had seen him slip under.
"That's it, I saw him go under there. He was carrying some kind of sack with him," she informed.
The devilman didn't respond in words, but a disapproving growl hummed at the back of his throat. His stern eyes faced forward, thoroughly scanning over the area. He hid the bike behind a building not far from their destination, as he and Miko dismounted and crept towards the basement doors.
"What are we going to do?" Miko spoke softly as they made their way.
"Go down there, and end this before it starts," Akira answered gravely.
Miko was surprised by her own reaction. She didn't understand why, but hearing that come from Akira's mouth stirred something unnerving in her. She continued to follow him, but with a level of concern now present with her.
"What, you mean kill him?" Miko asked.
"Yes."
The bluntness of his answer coupled with the casual tone of his voice sent a shiver up Miko's spine. She knew Koda was nothing but trouble, and honestly didn't have many setbacks with killing him herself, but it was Akira she worried for. She swallowed it back though, knowing this was their business. It was their duty to protect people this time and ensure the ones that caused such harm never be given the same opportunity again. Thus she pressed on.
She came to his side as they stood over the aged metal doors; with a glance to one another they each pulled open the locked doors. The action made more noise than either had meant, but they knew it was inevitable. Akira went first, dropping down into the dingy underground. His eyes could see through the darkness, it didn't seem like anyone was in there at that moment, but there had been people here. There were newer objects down there, such as some scattered furniture that would never look natural in a warehouse setting. There were countless crates of fresh food and bottles of water, and if that wasn't enough evidence this place had been occupied, Akira could even smell people were here. The cellar stunk of the familiar scent of Koda and someone else he didn't recognize. However, as much as he tried to see or hear if someone was there, he wasn't picking up on it.
Akira didn't trust it still. He motioned for Miko to drop down as well and kept her behind him as they went further in. Communication wasn't needed between them for Miko to know to lay low and remain alert after him.
The whole place had a spooky vibe to it that kept the devilmen on edge. The deeper in they went, Akira noticed how far in this cellar really went. If someone was in here it would be easy for them to hide.
"This looks like a doomsday bunker," Miko quietly commented.
"That's because it probably is," Akira responded under his breath. "He could be anywhere down here…"
Akira had stopped as he stood in place and became very still. Miko knew he was sensing his surroundings, so she tried to remain just as still as him. Some moments passed of nothing, until Akira's body jolted ever so slightly. He was picking up on something, and fast. Miko heard the same thing scurrying past them just in time herself. Both of them spun around to face whatever it was, and upon the rusty catwalk, they witnessed a shadow.
It wasn't even a full figure and the devilman was already on the defense. He put his arm out in front of Miko as he grit his teeth and stepped forward.
"Koda!" he barked. Suddenly the frame of the being leapt from the structure above to land down on the floor before them in a thud. Seeing him now right then and there all doubt was cast out, the final devilman had been found and soon his time would be up.
"I knew it would only be a matter of time before I'd have to deal with you two again," he started. His body language tried to come off as casual, but Akira could pick up on the slight nervy movements he made.
"Don't worry we'll make this quick," Akira threatened. Moyuru's features became that much sterner and the lighter mood he had come with seemed to defuse.
"Oh, really? that's good to hear, neither of you were invited anyway," he replied puckishly.
"Don't worry, an invite will be the least of your worries," Miko added as she and Akira closed in on him. Koda's features creased more as he was forced to back up further. His teeth clasped together, and fangs could be seen forming in his mouth, but for whatever reason, he held it back.
"Hey look, I'm not a fan of you two either, but I don't want any trouble! You both need to get out of here!" he started becoming more defensive.
"You should have thought about that before you betrayed us!" Akira shouted. Just as soon as he completed that statement, he lunged at the opposite teen. The devilman had zero patience left as he held his hand over Moyuru's neck. He had a firm grip as he pressed him up against the concrete walls and his claws started to sink into the super high schoolers' flesh.
Panic set in as Koda's hands flew up to try and pry away Akira's and his legs kicked to force his attacker off him. No matter how much he kicked nor however hard did Akira loosen up, as a matter of fact, his persistence only got that much worse. Miko was hunched and prepared for any of his tricks, but something else soon stole her attention. She could hear something approaching, but it wouldn't come any further. She feared it could be an ambush. Knowing Akira could take Koda just fine on his own, she went to investigate.
"Stop! Let me go!" Moyuru demanded as he perilously tried to force the much bulkier devilman off him. Akira was not listening and hadn't been for some time. His eyes were white and devoid of pupils as his body slowly appeared to change evermore. Oddly, as natural, and wise as it would have been for Koda to transform as well, he seemed to be deliberately holding it back.
"What did I do this time, huh!?" Koda spat. "What makes you think you can do this! I haven't done nothing!"
"Yeah, and I'm not gonna give you the chance to either!" Akira yelled as he winded back his fist, targeting the young man's face.
"What makes you think you can play God! You're so sure you're right and that I'm wrong, but you're the one breaking in here to kill me!" he continued to berate.
For once Akira paused in his actions, but his face twisted up soon after to dismiss the hesitancy.
"Shut up! You've killed people for your own gain! You and I both know you don't care for anyone but yourself!" he argued.
"You don't know me!" Koda tried to scream but it was cut short by Akira's clasp.
Meanwhile, Miko slipped her way further into the shadows of the basement. The devillady knew she was getting close; she sensed the heat from this other being's body. From it, she could determine this was in fact a person and they were scared.
"I've seen enough!" Akira barked. His rival continued to squirm and wedge away his hands. Oddly after saying that the star athlete nearly smiled.
"You think you're so different from me," he halted to catch a shallow breath. "I came back for someone too…"
For a split second, there was a hesitancy in Akira. His eyes widened slightly, and his look of rage melted to one of stern consideration. He had to be lying, he had to. Akira knew he would say anything to save his own skin. The devilman's expression became wrathful once more and he bared his fangs openly. His patience had dried up. Moyuru didn't even seem surprised, he narrowed his gaze at him and stayed locked to his eye contact. Akira readied his fist once more and intended to make this quick, but something had stolen away his attention, as well as Koda's.
A loud crash could be heard, and the next thing anyone knew, a lean dark-haired male came barreling into the main cellar room. He was out of breath and appeared greatly disturbed as he peered into the hallway he had come from. Just then another figure came lunging out after him.
Miko had caught ahold of the fleeing teen and held tight to his wrists she had placed behind his back. He seemed panicked by her predatory nature and strength, and surely the situation itself wasn't helping any either.
"Moyuru! What's going on! I'm scared!" he wailed.
"Junichi," Koda quivered under his breath. At first, it was so faint Akira almost couldn't make it out but the painful kick to his gut was enough for him to abandon that thought. Koda seemed to have a great power possess him seeing the newly found male in turmoil. He didn't let his body change, but Akira could see in his eyes he had succumbed to his demonic instinct.
"You don't lay a hand on him!" Koda screamed at both the intruders. Miko came to Akira's aid who was angrily coming back to his feet. He starred at the other teen, but he held back his advances, this other guy, he wasn't a demon, he was human. The athlete in his rage oddly didn't even seem all too concerned with harm Akira or Miko, curiously the majority of this interest went to Junichi.
"Junichi, are you alright? I'm so sorry this happened, I was supposed to keep you safe," Koda spoke softer to his companion.
Their interaction had puzzled both Miko and Akira, so much so that now they were both simply watching. As much as Akira despised Moyuru, he didn't want to scar another human being.
"Who are these people!?" Junichi sputtered.
"Don't worry, they're intruders, I can handle them. You go back and hide," Koda insisted.
"Go back and hide, all you ever want to do is run and hide! What's going on! First, you move me down here to this dark and dank basement, these other people start showing up, I mean what's the deal! You've been acting strange ever since we went to that party!" the teen unloaded.
Moyuru appeared incredibly displeased with his lover's sudden outbursts. His head shook as his hand came to cradle his forehead.
"Look I know none of this makes sense hun, but I told you it's to keep us safe," Moyuru spoke through a present agitation.
"Safe from what!? It seems we're just as in danger here," he whipped his hand to gesture to Akira and Miko. "What are you so afraid of!?"
"Look, this isn't a good time babe, just do as I say for now, please," Koda stressed.
Akira and Miko had been standing by for some time now, and it was starting to strike them what was actually occurring here. More and more Miko allowed herself to relax and found herself glancing to Akira frequently for a change in plan. The devilman's face was still molded into a frown and his arms were crossed, but more than anything he seemed to be deeply assessing the situation.
"You always tell me it's a bad time, I want answers, I want the truth! I deserve it!" Junichi put his foot down.
It was clear the incredible weight of fret and strain that was on Moyuru at that moment, it was like his world was folding in on him. Finally and with a long sigh, Akira finally opened his mouth once more.
"Hey, it's alright, we're just old track rivals. Everyone said you both went missing, we didn't think we'd actually find you here. We'll just be on our way," Akira placed his hands in his pockets and turned around. Every person there looked equally shocked and yet for all differing reasons. It even took Miko a second to process his command, but willingly she followed after him making eye contact with Koda as she left.
"If you wouldn't mind Koda, I'll have one last word with you outside…" Akira spoke without even turning around. There was something so cold and blunt to his voice that was enough to convince Moyuru to follow him.
"I'll be just a minute, don't worry about a thing, okay," Koda reassured him before leaving a kiss on his cheek and heading out. Junichi watched on skeptically, but didn't seem inclined to question it further.
As the devilman exited, he was met with the brimming rays of the day. He squinted his eyes and as they adjusted, he was able to see the other two remaining devilmen. He kept his guard up and kept his distance but was willing to listen.
Akira seemed to take a minute in his response, as his harsh face glared to the horizon before landing on the athlete.
"I want to make it very clear to you that I have worked far too hard to let you ruin all my progress. If I so much as see you step even a toe out of line, I will not hesitate in killing you, do you understand?"
On the outside, Koda appeared aloof, but deep down both he and Akira knew just how serious this matter was. The bull devilman eased himself slightly and tried to come off uncaring.
"Whatever you say, as long as you leave me alone. Not that it matters anyway, despite anything you do the worlds still going to fall apart," Koda shrugged.
"What makes you so sure?" Miko asked impatiently.
He chuckled lightly, "Because it always does. What makes you think either of you can make a difference in the grand scheme of the universe? All any of us can do is expect the worst and prepare for it. I'm protecting my own, and that's all you can do, the world will have to fend for itself."
Neither Miko nor Akira reacted warmly to that prospect. Before Miko could make a shot back at him she was halted.
"Whatever, I don't care what you do as long as it doesn't harm others. Just stay out of my way, and I'll stay out of yours," the devilman finished in a scolding tone.
"Fair enough, can I go now?" Moyuru brushed off as he began to step away. He didn't actually need their permission, he was already walking well away from them. The two kept a lingering eye on him for a moment, but otherwise, Akira didn't have the patience to wait there anymore. Miko watched him head back to his bike with a curious expression.
The devillady caught back up to him and asked, "So what made you let him go?"
The male didn't respond immediately. He remounted his bike and sighed deeply.
"He's just not worth it…"
Miko allowed her body to ease back some. Despite knowing the difficult decisions they both had to make, something inside her was thankfully Akira made this choice. She smiled and was about to join him on the bike of the vehicle when something made them both alert.
There was an unnatural stillness in the air, and yet it felt similar to never-ending ringing. Like an alarm, there was something just not quite right and it kept notifying them. Akira and Miko made eye contact with each other, mirroring the same worried features.
Suddenly from all around, they heard several people screaming all of the sudden. They could hear sirens and car crashes and chaos ensuing from every angle. Spooked, Miko and Akira sprinted to a better vantage point. They scaled another nearby building and overlooked a portion of the city from the rooftop.
What they witnessed below was utterly horrific. People we're yelling and screaming for their lives. For what reason the devilmen weren't completely sure yet, but upon second look Akira could see a deceased corpse, but nothing about it was right. It looked as though it was a man at one time, but the body of a demon had mangled itself into him, creating a disgusting mix. Neither life could contain the other, the shock was so sudden and unexpected, both the demon and human had perished.
This wasn't the only example either. There were only handfuls of them but from out of the blue, a random person would struggle with a demon, only to ultimately die from it.
Akira could hardly believe it; the demons were exposing themselves. It didn't seem to make any sense, there weren't enough of them doing it to kill everybody, and yet it was still happening. Why would the demons want to kill their own this way, even if all these demons did appear to be on the weaker side? Akira was puzzled by this, until something in the back of his mind clicked. It was like a little voice giving him a clue.
"They're doing it on purpose…" Akira spoke without even thinking. Miko in her fret seemed taken by his suggestion.
"What do you mean?" she asked.
"They're doing it on purpose, just to cause this widespread hysteria. They're sacrificing a few of their weak devils to scare the humans into killing each other again!"
It all caught up with Miko at that point. The terror and apprehension on her face was blatant.
"What should we do?" she hurried out. Much to her surprise and frustration Akira simply stood there. He looked over the carnage with a desolate and narrow stare.
"There's nothing we can do here…" he stated flatly. It was clear on his face how sickened he was by these actions and how there was little he could currently do to stop it. Even Miko knew as she watched the horrid slaughter, she couldn't do anything for it now. She did everything in her power to turn away from it. Akira had closed his eyes, and in that very next moment began to storm off, gesturing for Miko to follow. She did so and as they departed from the onslaught of cruelty Akira made his final statement.
"We have to go Miko, our war begins now."
Miles away in that very same city, the global phenomenon continued, catching the attention of the two divine angels. The pair had only just arrived and already they were forced to duck into an ally. Gabriel and Ryo watched on as the people scattered and screamed at the out of nowhere attack.
"Oh my, those poor people." Gab gasped.
The other angel kept a stone face, "These humans never change…"
"Brother, they know no better, they're afraid," the younger of the two gently noted. Ryo didn't respond on that further, but somewhere in the deep reassesses of his conscious it lingered.
"Why are the demons doing this?" Gabriel asked. He watched in disgust as the poor humans were distorted and murdered by the demonic entities.
Ryo gritted his teeth and huffed, "I don't know. They're not doing what they're supposed to. I have to stop them; this will only make things worse when God sees."
"But what about finding Akira?" his brother questioned.
The professor seemed pained to even hear those words leave his brothers mouth. He didn't speak instantly, only starting to walk and create a new portal before him. Gabriel followed after him with a sympathetic look.
Ryo glanced back at his brother and for a moment he seemed to debate against his own actions. Why should he care what these demons do? their actions only contradicted his personal motives. And yet, he found himself in conflict, he didn't want to waste any more time, but he knew he very well may have no time at all if he didn't combat this issue.
He took a gulp and faced forward again, "We'll find him. But I have to stop this first."
Gabriel's brow rose slightly, and a look of genuine surprise seemed to come over him. He didn't hesitate though, he followed close behind his elder brother as they passed through the portal to the demon's hideout.
