Even though he saw the look in her eyes as she looked at the monk, it did not faze him. He vowed to not give up and offered her his services if she ever needed his assistance.

It has been fifteen years since that day.

They call him a fool. He ignores them. He still has not taken a wife and doesn't have an heir. They worry for the future of the clan, he worries for his wife-to-be who hasn't returned to him.

They tell him what happened, and they are right. He doesn't give up hope all the same.

He would love her forever. Even if she never returned and his family line ended, he would still love her, and he would still wait for her. Because that was what he promised her. And he never broke a promise.

Another ten years passed, and she has not returned. He sits by the window and waits anyway. It's all he's been doing for the past twenty five years. Most of his people have left him, and only the loyal remain. They try to convince him to take up a wife, that there is still a chance one will have him. He simply shakes his head. His hope hasn't died. They doubt it ever will.

He is an old man on his deathbed. She has finally returned, her children and grandchildren running after her.

He smiles at her and see someone he does not expect. Her hanyou companion is with her, and not the monk. How ironic, he thinks. But he does not laugh, and he does not cry. He doesn't even ask why.

The answer was obvious enough.

The monk must have broken her heart, and the hanyou had been there to pick up the broken pieces.

And even as he closes his eyes and fades into the dark abyss, he feels her soft hand enclose around his.

He smiles.

Good things always come to those who wait.

Even if it is for but a moment.
