"A character you would not get along with"

Holding an icepack up to the left side of his face, one thought repeated itself in Kenta's head over and over again. At first he tried telling himself it would pass, but the longer he sat in detention, the more he felt compelled to get his feelings off his chest. He slowly turned to face the occupied desk to his left.

"This is all your fault."

Kazu raised an eyebrow. "My fault that you don't know how to duck?"

Kenta almost jumped to his feet. "I wouldn't have needed to duck if you hadn't started that fight!"

"Masaru started it!" Kazu snapped as he spun around to face Kenta directly.

It was clear that Kazu believed his version of events, though Kenta had been present for what had actually happened. The upperclassmen in question had been discussing the D-Reaper's occupation of Shinjuku with a friend, and had made the observation that "weirder and weirder stuff has been happening ever since the Digimon started appearing." Not an inaccurate statement on its own, though Kazu had immediately interpreted it as blaming the Digimon for the recent destruction.

Kazu had thrown himself in Masaru's face and demanded that he take back what he had said. Things escalated pretty quickly from there. Kazu threw the first punch, and had sidestepped when Masaru retaliated. Kenta had been unfortunate enough to be standing next to Kazu, and received the blow instead. Luckily, the fight had been broken up almost immediately after that.

All associated parties were given detention in their respective classrooms, with Kenta basically being deemed guilty by association. Having been sitting in said classroom for a little bit now, a second though recurred in Kenta's head, though not as frequently as the first.

"You're not even sorry, are you?" Kenta asked, disappointment forcing its way into his words.

Kazu crossed his arms and looked away. "The only thing I'm sorry about is that Ms. Asaji showed up before I could teach that jerk a lesson."

"You realize she basically saved you, right?" Masaru was not only older than Kazu, but bigger as well, leaving Kenta to wonder how his friend had imagined that fight going.

"Agree to disagree."

"On reality?"

"I so would have won that fight." Kazu turned his attention to the one other occupied desk in the room, just a couple away from theirs. "Right, Chumley?"

"Huh?" Takato looked up his desk, clearly having not been mentally present for the rest of the conversation. "Yeah, sure thing..."

"See?" Kazu beamed as he looked back towards Kenta. "Told you!"

Kenta sighed and slumped in his chair, deciding that this argument wasn't going anywhere and the whole encounter had been symptomatic of Digimon being forced to return to the Digital World. They each had their own coping mechanisms, and dragging his friends into fights he couldn't win was clearly Kazu's.

Kenta briefly entertained the thought that this was just who Kazu was regardless of circumstance, a thought which he did not allow to stick around. In that case, Kenta would have to seriously reevaluate his criteria for making friends.
