Chapter 4 Mother's Day

"Fitz, please", the tears were swelling in Liv's eyes. It broke Fitz's heart to see her in so much pain. "Just go slow, ok."

"I will baby, I promise." Fitz led Liv by the hand into their home, his other hand securely around her waist. Quinn jumped up from the couch to help him.

"Hey Quinn, thanks so much for the last-minute babysitting for Brielle, is she ok?" Liv was talking slowly, Quinn sensing she was still in so much pain.

"Yeah, she's ok, very worried about you though, she finally passed out on the couch around midnight." Quinn nodded where Brielle had fallen asleep.

"Thanks, I'll carry her to the room once I get Liv settled, you truly helped us out tonight." Fitz thanked Quinn once again.

"Please, no problem at all. What did they say at the hospital?" Quinn looked at Liv's very pregnant belly.

Fitz sat her carefully into the recliner as he went to the kitchen to gather some thing to eat. He was starving and thank goodness Quinn had ordered a pizza. He grabbed two slices and was bout to just eat them.

"Don't you dare Mister, I don't want your stomach bothering you in the morning, heat them up." Liv was right, Fitz's stomach would be pounding if he ate the cold greasy pizza, so he turned on the oven.

Liv looked back at Quinn. "It's just normal back pain associated with the third trimester of pregnancy, but damn this is relentless." Liv was squirming, trying to find some comfort, but still in so much pain. "Of course, no pain meds, I won't chance it with the baby."

"Heating pad and massages, which I will be happy to give. Anytime I can touch my Livvie, it'll be all good." Fitz sat on the arm of the recliner, kissing her on the cheek.

"On that note, I better get going." Quinn smiled. She gave Liv a small hug. "Let me know if you need anything, I mean it."

"I will, thanks again Quinn. I'll see you Monday."

"Yeah, and Happy Mother's Day Liv."

Liv nodded. Although it was 2 am, it was still Saturday morning. Tomorrow is Mother's Day, and it would be Liv's last one as a mother of one. She looked over at Brielle, sleeping so peacefully. "You think she's ok?" She nodded to her as Fitz was getting his pizza out of the oven.

"I think so. I'll talk to her tomorrow. It's good you were strong enough to go the Mommy and Me Teatime at her school today. I just think knowing you went to the hospital tonight may have spooked her. She's never seen you like that."

"Take her in her room first, Fitz. I'll wait here." Liv was reclined in the chair. "I finally found a comfortable position." She rested her head back as Fitz picked up his little girl and she rested her head on his shoulder.

Her eyes opened momentarily. She looked at Liv sitting in the chair. "Mommy," Brielle said groggily, "Are you alright?"

"I am fine Boo, the doctor said everything was fine."

Brielle nodded, not quite understanding her mother's words, she was just happy to see her smile. She patted her father's back and rested her head back on his shoulder and let her strong daddy carry her to her room.

He put Tiger in her arms, and she held the stuffed animal close to her. Fitz looked at his daughter and kissed her forehead. Brielle turned to her side. "I love you daddy." She fell back into a deep heavy sleep.

Tomorrow was Mother's Day as Quinn had said. Even though Fitz had all day Saturday, he wanted to make this one special for Liv and Brielle. He left Brielle's room, saw Liv sound asleep in the chair, finally able to get some comfort, and he sat down to eat his pizza.

Olivia was 34 weeks pregnant. Everything was going fine until the third trimester hit and his second little girl decided to give her mother back pain. Liv began waking up during the night, at first afraid it was early contractions.

When the doctor assured her it was back pain associated with the pregnancy it gave her some relief, but not from the pain. It was becoming harder each night for her to fall asleep, and it was taking its toll on his wife. Fitz felt so helpless. He hated seeing her in so much pain.

Never, through all her pain and discomfort did she slow down though. Brielle needed her mother and Liv didn't fail her at all. She didn't break routine once, until tonight and he saw fear in his little girl's eyes.

Around 9 tonight while getting Brielle ready for bed, Liv couldn't move, not being able to stand from Brielle's bed. Liv held her forehead in her hand, trying to ease the pain, then she got a bit panicked thinking it was contractions again, as her back was having spasms.

"Mommy, are you hurt, should I get daddy?" Brielle began rubbing Liv's back softly, as she had seen her father do to comfort her.

"Yes, Boo, please go get daddy." Liv didn't even have enough strength to call for Fitz and Brielle hopped down and ran out of the room. "Daddy, daddy, mommy needs you."

That began their journey to the Emergency Room, calling Quinn, leaving, meeting with Liv's doctor, an ultrasound, and a hook up to the heart monitor.

The baby was fine, in position, heart rate steady, she was just making herself too comfortable in Liv's small frame. No contractions, and if the pain became unbearable a c section would be recommended. Although Liv had no problem with c sections, she did not want one, so she would bear the pain. The only reason for a c section would be for the baby's safety and that wasn't necessary.

Fitz didn't have the heart to move Liv. She hadn't look this peaceful in sleep for a month. He placed a blanket over his love and grabbed a pillow for himself. He put it on the couch and fell asleep, wanting to be in the same room as her, just in case she needed him to ease anymore pain.

Liv's body ached all over. She opened her eyes to her darkened living room. She took a moment to remember the events of the previous hours. She looked over at the clock shining 345. She took a deep breath. She rubbed her stomach.

"Listen little one, we all love you out here, but take it easy on mommy ok, don't be so eager to move around in there, get your rest." She closed her eyes. A mother of two, Liv couldn't believe it. She still had a hard time believing she was a mother at all.

Brielle has been everything she would want in a child. That pregnancy was a shock and mostly her fault, but she wouldn't change anything for the world. From the moment that beautiful child first moved inside her, Liv was determined to be the best mother she could be.

"You alright Liv?" Fitz moved on the couch and sat up.

"I know it's crazy, but I could really use a nice hot bath, my body is so sore."

Fitz stood up. Liv had to laugh. Even when she wasn't in bed with him, he woke up with an erection. She looked at him. "Dreaming of me again Admiral Grant?"

He looked down. He rubbed his hand through his hair, still slightly blushing. "Always baby. Let's get in that tub. Brielle is out cold so we could have a few minutes in there if you want."

The hot water immediately soothed her body. She was sitting upright in between Fitz's legs. He was caressing her belly, slow, gentle, circular movements around it. Liv tilted her head and was just lost in the feeling.

He began placing soft kisses on her wet neck as it was tilted, and Liv closed her eyes, moaning softly. Fitz always made her feel better, and the pain was gone even if it was just for a few moments. "Feel good, my Livvie?"

"So good Fitz, thank you." She interlocked her hands with his over her belly. They sat in silence for a while just taking in the warmth of the water and feel of each other's bodies.

"So what do you have planned with your little girl today?" Liv broke the silence.

"Well, I am not disclosing that information, since it has to do with preparation for a perfect Mother's Day."

"You know" Liv rubbed his hand, "I still plan to take her to her favorite playground tomorrow. It's our Mother's Day tradition."

Fitz took a deep breath. "Let's just see how you're feeling alright?"

"Fitz, this is my last Mother's Day as only her mother, I want to make it about the both of us." She turned to look at him.

He reached down and kissed her lips. He nodded his head, "OK". He kissed her again. "I love you" He stood up and grabbed his towel, then helped Olivia out of the tub. "Feel any better?"

"A bit, I'll feel better when I can get comfortable in that bed and sleep the day away." Fitz helped her get relaxed in the bed. It was now 5 am and he wanted to get some sleep but wanted to make sure she was sleeping first.

He slipped into the bed with her. He held his head up with his hand and with his other hand he caressed her face, down her neck, chest and the belly. He kissed the belly tenderly and whispered, "let your mommy sleep before her big day tomorrow." He kissed it once more and began caressing back up.

Liv's eyes had closed, and she fell into a peaceful sleep to his touch by the time he reached back up to her smooth cheek. He kissed her softly on her cheek and finally felt himself fall into a sleep as he stared at Olivia.

Four hours later, although it seemed like four minutes later, Fitz felt little hands poking his shoulder. He opened his eyes to see his daughter's beautiful face. "Daddy" she whispered softly, "let's have breakfast." She took his hand and before Fitz was fully awake, she pulled him up from the bed.

He glanced over at Olivia, she was still sleeping, breathing steady, and no signs of pain. He let Brielle drag him to the kitchen where she had two bowls, the milk, and her Honey Nut Cheerios set up on the table.

"Did you set this up for us, Princess?" Fitz was impressed.

Brielle nodded her head happily, "I sure did Daddy, let's have some cereal and toast." She walked to the toaster and pushed the lever down as all four slices fell synchronized into the toaster. She was all set.

She brought the slightly buttered toast over to the table, set it down and sat next to Fitz. "Let's eat."

"This looks great, Brielle, your mother would be so proud of you doing this all on your own." Fitz smiled. Liv really did a great job with her. She was the one home with her most of the day and into the early evening. She was only working with Huck occasionally now, even less with the pregnancy.

"Daddy, did I hurt mommy when I was in her belly? I don't think my baby sister means to hurt her, but did I hurt her too?" Brielle's big brown eyes stared at her father, waiting for an answer.

Fitz rubbed his daughter's head. "No, honey, not at all, in fact the pain your mother is feeling, you were the one that helped her. You helped her be able to get through this pain, because she understands it from having you in there too."

"Daddy, Mommy is not going to be just my mommy anymore, I am going to miss her being just my mommy." Fitz saw Brielle's eyes begin to water up, and he wanted to stop the tears before they began.

"Want me to tell you about when you were in mommy's belly? Because you taught her Brielle, you taught her how to be a mom first and that's something your little sister cannot say she did. Mommy was nervous just like you are now that she wasn't going to be just Olivia anymore that she was going to be mommy, and it was scary."

"Tell me daddy. She is the best mommy. I saw all the other mommies in the class yesterday and no one is as pretty and as smart as my mommy."

Fitz smiled. "I agree, Princess, and you know what, you are the one that made her the best mommy, you made her a mommy first. When she told me you were in her belly…." Fitz began his story.

Six years ago

The night before his wedding, Fitz was a barrel of nerves. He kept checking his uniform, pacing on the hotel carpet, changing channels, nothing he did could make him less nervous. He just wanted everything to go right.

Olivia was frustrated. Her mother was in town and between her, Quinn, and Abby, they were making Liv crazy. She had called him at least twenty times today begging him to just run away with her and find another way. Each time he brought her down, but he was finding it hard to keep himself calm now.

He was beyond shocked when he heard a knock on the door and Liv stormed in, a crying mess. As she stormed into the room, he wouldn't turn from the closed door, he was afraid to look at her. It's bad luck to see your bride the night before the wedding, right?

"Fitz, I can't, I just can't. I don't even think the three of them know I left. They are arguing about some fabric that should or shouldn't be part of my mother's dress. I just can't." She turned and saw he wasn't even facing her.

"Fitz, look at me." Her shoulders slumped. "Don't tell me you believe in all these superstitions too; I came here for some normalcy. Just look at me."

"We're going to have bad luck." Fitz still wouldn't turn around.

She picked up a couch pillow and tossed it at him. It hit him in the head. "That's if you see me in my dress before I walk down the aisle." He still wouldn't turn around. "Fine, I'll come to you."

Her hands went up his t shirt and rubbed his chest from behind. She lifted the shirt up so she could kiss his back, and her soft wet lips went from the middle to his shoulder blades.

Not being able to ignore it anymore, superstitions be damned, he ripped her shirt off, and ripped it did. He buried his lips on her and wrapped her legs around his waist walking to the bedroom. He swears as he released his boxers mid walk and pulled her pants down, he was in her before they even landed on the bed.

"Yes, Fitz, this is what I need, yes, baby." She pulled and tugged his hair as he just went in and out in a slow hard rhythm. He needed it just as much as it finally calmed him down.

"Fuck, Livvie, we shouldn't be." She grabbed his face and put her lips on his stopping his words. She used her tongue to trace his lips and his pace slowed up a bit. Liv could feel how wet she was and the ache in her core caused her to push him back into her.

His frustrations, his nerves, being released from his body in each thrust. By the time his back began to sweat, he noticed Liv's body just go still. She took a long deep breath, followed by a loud moan as his hardest thrust went into her.

He released every bit of fluid in him staying deep inside her as her body fell weakly into his. He put his tongue in her mouth, and she took it all, her breathing coming back to normal. He looked directly in her eyes.

"I am pretty sure we broke every pre wedding rule just now." Fitz smiled at her.

She smiled back. "I don't care. I am still marrying you."

"You feel better now?" He rolled off her staring at the ceiling.

"Yeah, I feel better now. I better get back before they notice I am missing, and they send out the cavalry thinking I took off."

Liv got dressed, kissed her soon to be husband and headed back into the craziness.

It wasn't until the last day on their honeymoon did Liv realize she hadn't taken her birth control pills. With all the chaos leading up to the wedding, she had forgotten. In fact, she had forgotten to take it and the last one she remembers taking was three days before she went to Fitz's hotel the night before the wedding.

With as many times as they made love during the honeymoon, Liv was sure….maybe not…then she figured she would just wait it out. Fitz wouldn't know.

Liv spoke to her doctor as soon as she got back. She told her there was no use beginning the pill again, they would just monitor her.

Eight weeks to the day following her wedding, Liv finally took a pregnancy test, and that's how she found out she would be a mother. She didn't know how Fitz would take the news. They wanted children, but was Fitz ready this soon into the marriage? They didn't even have time to be married yet.

She figured she would soon find out as she prepared a small intimate announcement between the two of them. She prepared his favorite, steak dinner with homemade fries. Knowing how much she loved his ketchup, she kept the plate by her.

With the ketchup, she spelled out the word DAD, and would place it in front of him with his plate of food.

That night when he finally showered and sat down, she brought the plate to him and just waited. He was about to dip his fry into the ketchup and smiled as he saw something different. His body was just numb after reading the word.

With a spoon still in her hands, he scooped her up by her waist, kissing her non stop all over her face and down to her neck. She pulled back and smiled. "You're not upset. I forgot to take the pill."

He buried his head deep in her neck, shaking his head. "Far from upset Livvie, I am the happiest man alive right now." He leaned over and kissed her still flat belly. "We're going to be parents."

Present Day

"When you kissed mommy's belly, I think I remember feeling the kisses daddy." Brielle hopped down from his lap.

She walked over to the toaster, put two pieces in and poured a glass of water. "Can I bring mommy some breakfast daddy?"

Fitz popped the toaster up before it heated up. "How about we check that mommy is awake and feeling up to eating before we begin our secret day."

"Ok." Brielle forgot about the water and walked quickly to her parent's room. Liv turned her head when she heard her daughter come in.

She smiled a big smile and put her arms out. "Hey Boo, thank you so much for taking care of me last night. You were great."

Brielle was kneeling next to Liv on the bed. "Is the baby still kicking you mommy?"

"Well, she'll kick a lot now because she's running out of room, that's why she'll be here soon. It's ok though, it's a good kick and you taught me that baby kicking is fun even though it can hurt."

Brielle rested her head now on Liv's shoulder. She looked at her mom. "I'm sorry if I hurt you by kicking." She went down to Liv's belly. "Hey baby sister, don't kick mommy so hard ok, she's the best mommy ever and you'll see when you are here."

"You know, you're voice is making her move, put your ear on my belly, go ahead." Liv watched as Brielle's ear went to her belly facing her. Brielle's mouth went up in shock and happiness and she began to giggle.

"Daddy, my sister kicked me." Liv was rubbing Brielle's soft curls and she stared lovingly at her daughter.

"Thank you Boo for teaching me how to be a mommy. Always remember you are the first, you made me a mommy first." Brielle nodded with Liv's words, as Fitz walked in the room.

He gave Liv a small kiss. "We're going to head to out for a bit. Do you want anything to eat? Brielle makes a kicking cereal and toast breakfast." He scooped up Brielle and sat her on his shoulder.

Liv looked at them both. "No, I am going to go back to sleep, you two go, have a good time."

When Fitz and Brielle returned, Liv was freshened up, having slept a good three hour nap, comfortably. She was in the kitchen fixing a bite to eat. She noticed a few bags. "What's in the bags?"

"Nuh-uh, don't fall for that Brielle, get them to your room." Fitz stood in front of Olivia blocking her view as Brielle giggled loudly running to her room.

"No fair, Boo, I thought we were teammates." She smiled and looked up at Fitz. "Thank you, I am well rested for tomorrow."

Brielle was so excited. She had picked out a mom necklace from the jewelry store with Fitz. She also picked up a bracelet making craft kit. She was going to make her mommy two custom made bracelets. Her daddy was going to help her.

Then, in the morning, daddy was going to help her make breakfast for her mommy in bed, off to the playground, her favorite one, and then out to dinner with the best mom in the world on Mother's Day.

Fitz entered Brielle's room. "Mommy is in bed, we can go ahead with the plan."

Fitz helped his daughter wrap the jewelry box. The necklace was white gold, Liv's favorite, and it had a small scripted mom in the middle.

Fitz began opening the bracelet craft set. He was sitting on a tiny chair at Brielle's art table in her room. He looked over at the storage box on the table, remembering the shamrock she had made here less than two months ago.

"Umm, how is Morgan?" Fitz dared to ask.

"Who?" Brielle crossed her eyebrows.

"Morgan" and Fitz held up the pattern of the shamrock.

"Oh, him, he's gone. Went off to Italy." She shrugged.

He shook his head. This isn't going to get any easier he thought. Better stay in Italy. He laughed to himself.

"Daddy, tell me about mommy when I was born."

Six years ago

After 12 hours of labor, Fitz was able to put his arms around his brand new baby girl and the love of his life, the strongest woman he knew. Olivia was a champion through the whole ordeal.

They were returning from a dinner for his colleagues at the Pentagon when her water broke in the car. Having packed a bag, just in case, they were ready to head to the hospital. Liv called her doctor letting her know they were on their way.

Liv had trouble dilating enough to push, and Fitz was rubbing the sweat off her forehead as much as he could. He saw his wife's pain, but she welcomed it. "We're going to be parents," she kept saying. Then a contraction would hit and the moans would begin again with the sweat.

Now, with his arm around both of them, the nurse handed him a card. BRIELLE CAROLYN GRANT BORN: NOVEMBER 11, 2016, 7lbs.6oz. 21 inches long. PARENTS: Fitzgerald and Olivia Grant.

The card was pink with a little stork in the background. He showed Olivia who couldn't take her eyes off Brielle. She was caressing her newborn's soft head. "I'm a mommy, Fitz, I'm a mommy."

"The best mommy." Fitz gently kissed his newborn's head. "Today begins our journey as parents. You are such a warrior Liv. And you", his big hand caressed Brielle's small face, "are a Princess Warrior. I love both of you so much."

Present Day

"And from that moment your mommy never stopped loving you or taking care of you."

"I know. What do you think Daddy?" She held up the bracelet she made for Olivia.

"I think it's great, beautiful. What do you think of mine?" He held up the bracelet he made on request from Brielle for Olivia.

Brielle inspected it. "It's perfect. She's going to love them, right."

"Right".

"Right what?" Liv was smiling ear to ear watching her husband in the small chair surrounded by pink glitter and colorful beads.

Brielle ran to the door, waving her hands in the air so Olivia couldn't peek over. "Hey mommy, let's go get you into the chair so you don't feel any pain, ok." She pulled Liv carefully by the hand. Liv laughing. Both her daughter and husband were filled with antics.

Brielle kneeled next to the chair. "Tomorrow, I am going to go across the bars at the playground mommy, I have been practicing in the backyard, but the ones at the playground are bigger and I am going to get all the way across."

"I can't wait." Liv looked at her. "Why the sad face, Boo?"

"Tomorrow is the last Mother's Day I get to go to the park with you as only my mommy."

"Yes, but your little sister will learn everything from you, and soon she'll be ready to do the bars because of you."

Brielle smiled. "So even though you won't only be my mommy, I am going to be only her big sister."

"That's right, don't you ever forget that."

"I'm glad you're feeling better."

"I will be in pain for a few more weeks, but then soon, you'll get to hold your baby sister."

"Just like you held me when I was born. I will tell her how much I love her, just like you told me." Brielle leaned over and kissed Liv's belly. "And I will give her gentle kisses like this, just like you did to me."

Liv's emotions were in overdrive now, and she needed Fitz to come out and take Brielle before her daughter heard her sobbing. They were happy sobs, but Liv didn't think she had the strength to tell her that.

"Bath is ready Brielle, head on in." Fitz came out and Brielle went to the bathroom.

"Liv" Fitz saw her crying. "More pain?" He went to the chair.

She shook her head. "No, not pain, joy. You told her when she was born?"

"Yeah, while we were making bead bracelets."

Liv laughed. "An admiral in the NAVY sitting at an art table making bead bracelets. How's that for a knockout GIRL DAD?"

Mother's Day morning had arrived. Brielle was standing next to Olivia's side of the bed. Olivia was sitting up, with a bunch of pillows comforting her back, it had been another bad night, but she wasn't ruining today for Brielle, the pain would have take a back burner.

"Go ahead," Fitz instructed Brielle.

Brielle handed her mother a bouquet of flowers, fresh pink, white, and red carnations. "These are from daddy because you're the mother of his children." Liv looked at Fitz who winked at her.

"And this" Brielle took her hands from behind her back, "is from me" She handed Liv the wrapped jewelry box.

When she saw the sparkling necklace, she reached over and took hold of her daughter. "Come up on the bed with mommy." Brielle did as she was told. Liv grabbed her in a tight hug. "Thank you so much Boo, this is so beautiful, I will wear it everyday because it reads the title you gave me, a mom."

Fitz walked over with one more box. "And this is from Brielle and the new little girl we are about to have."

Liv looked at Brielle. Her hands were under her chin in anticipation of Liv opening it. Inside were two handmade crafted bracelets. The first one was dark pink with different colored beads. The beads had letters on it. It read I heart (symbol) mommy from BIG BOO.

The other bracelet was a light pink, almost soft. The beads were all white and it said I heart mommy from LITTLE BOO.

Liv didn't hesitate to put them both on at the same time. She pulled Brielle into another big hug. "And I love you my FIRST BOO."

Liv devoured her breakfast of toast, eggs, and strawberries. It was served by Brielle and cleaned up by Fitz.

At the playground, Liv held hands with Fitz watching in the sunlight as their daughter ran around happily in the playground. This is what Liv loved about being a mother, watching her daughter run carefree in laughter and joy outdoors. At one point Brielle brought over a friend, holding hands.

"Mom, dad, this is Jeremiah. His mom isn't in the Army, and he isn't moving to Italy." She ran back with him and showed him how she could clear the big bars, all in one try.

Fitz let go of Liv's hand ready to go grab his little girl from the grip of Jeremiah. But Liv pulled him back. "Don't, let her have her fun." Fitz stopped, feeling defeated.

He kissed Liv, a soft kiss. "Happy Mother's Day Livvie. Today it's with your daughter. Next year it will be with your daughters." His hand resting on her belly.

"Our daughters", she corrected him interlocking her hand with his. "I couldn't have asked for a more perfect day. I love you Admiral Fitzgerald Grant."
