The waves swelled and broke against the jagged rocks. The steady beat both soothing and disturbing.
A lone figure stood on the beach, watching the waves as they swelled once more, before breaking, drowning out the sound of the seagulls.
Sumeragi Subaru. He stood; his eyes closed while his ears listened to every sound intently.
"I love you"
The waves broke heavily, jumping at the man's body, soaking his slacks.
The waves called again, "I love you" as they swelled once more.
They were taunting him. Taunting him by repeating the words that he so wanted to hear from the one that he loved... the one he killed.
The green-eyed man knew it was insanity, but he wished to have heard those words, even if they were seconds before the other's death. Just once. Not from the ocean mimicking his love's voice, but from his love himself.
The tide began to come in, slapping the man, trying to drag him into the ocean's depths.
Yes... Subaru thought, lifting a foot and placing it forward. To be swept away, taken to the depths, taken to his love...
But then he stopped. Remembering once again the pain he felt when his sister died. And how he almost destroyed himself then.
His mind continued to linger, falling upon a more recent memory, though feeling far away and hard to grasp.
A violet-eyed boy holding the head of the girl he loved.
How that boy had beaten himself up so, for not being able to save her. He kept reliving her death, drowning in a state of subconscious that tore and ripped apart his soul.
Until Subaru had saved him...
Taken him out of the depths of his woe and brought him back to reality, despite the harshness of it all.
No. Subaru stepped back as the ocean retreated; burbling slightly as it traced its way back.
He couldn't do it. He couldn't take this way out. He couldn't do that to the people that cared about him, no matter how few they were now...
But the ocean kept up its taunts, grabbing at Subaru's feet and shins, playfully inviting him to come...
The man looked forlornly at the ocean, his single green eye welling up slightly, and a single tear running down his cheek.
"I'm sorry, Seishirou-san... I'm sorry."
The man then turned, bringing up sand with his heel, spraying it upon the waves.
The swelling of the ocean became distant as the man continued to walk away from the beach.
As he walked, he fished in his pocket for the smooth metal lighter. He took it out, flicking the top carefully but firmly, letting the flame spark and grow.
He watched it dance and lick at the air for a moment before setting the end of his slender cigarette into it, catching the flame and interrupting the dance.
Subaru drew the lit cigarette to his lips, taking a deep breath, losing himself in the taste of nicotine.
"Subaru-san! Subaru-san!" the young man with violet eyes called the other's name, waving from a distance.
Yes, the few that cared for him were here, worried for their friend...
Subaru scoffed, trying to hide the smile forming upon his lips as he smashed the cigarette into the concrete.
