Immediately, they broke apart; darting away in separate directions.
"This is stupid." Pazu grumbled, hastily rubbing his forehead. Sheeta held up a hand that, only moments before, Pazu had been holding.
"Hold on, hold on. Let's just try again. Alright?"
Saying yes would have been so simple. But Pazu didn't want to try again. This really was stupid, and he was even dumber for going along with it. He only hoped Dola and her gang couldn't see them from here. He could imagine them now, hiding somewhere among the clouds, watching from their ship and laughing at their terrible attempts to kiss. But...Sheeta was his best friend. And that was reason enough for him to nod and mumble,
"Sure." Sheeta's heart fluttered. She hadn't expected him to say yes.
"A-alright. Just like we did last time. One...two...three." Once more, they leaned forward, eyes half-lidded, lips quivering. (Well, okay, only Pazu's lips were quivering.) Then, Sheeta suddenly pulled away. "Pazu?"
"Yeah?"
"Let's keep our eyes open this time." Eyes open, both leaned forward and, finally, connected lips.
All of a sudden, kissing wasn't so stupid.
In fact, it was quite nice. Both closed their eyes. Pazu's hands, having nowhere to go, came to rest on Sheeta's ribs. That was how they stayed, in one loose embrace, lips touching for one perfect moment in time. Give it a few more seconds; it could have been a Hallmark moment.
"Wooo! Go Pazu!" Someone cheered. "Way to get--" Dola scowled and smacked her son across the head.
"Aw, shaddup! Can't you tell when someone needs a little privacy?"
Instantly, the two former lovebirds broke apart. Pazu struggled to escape the once comfortable embrace; Sheeta turned two shades redder. Unbeknownst to them, Dola's aircraft had flown up alongside them while they were having their "moment". This would have been embarrassing for anyone, but for Pazu, it felt exaggeratedly bad.
He fainted dead away.
