Chance

A/N: I don't own them.

Dr. Temperance 'Bones' Brennan was in her office closing up the last case and brainstorming ideas for writing the next chapter of her new novel. She was working diligently until a certain man in a black suit hovered next to her door and interrupted her thoughts.

"Hey Bones. What are you still doing here this late?"

"For the hundredth time Booth, do not call me Bones. And I can ask you the same thing."

"What's wrong with Bones? You're a forensic anthropologist. That is what you do, look at bones. Anyways, we got another new case. We're going to Hawaii. Some bones were found. I already cleared it with Dr. Goodman. He says that you can go. So pack your bags; we're going tomorrow morning so I'm gonna come and pick you up around 8."

"Yeah, but… I don't like it so quit it. But we got a new case already? I just finished the last one. Anyways, I can't go to Hawaii. I can't just leave the Jeffersonian with Angela, Hodgins, and Zach alone. Who knows what would happen? Besides, I got work to do here, not scampering off with a FBI agent to Hawaii," retorted Brennan. As much as she wanted to go and be away with the 'hunky FBI agent' as Angela put it, she couldn't stand it. Being around with him already was making her feel uncomfortable and like a teenager again. Imagine how much worse being alone with him in Hawaii would be.

Seeing the uncomfortable face, Booth felt bad. "If you really want me to stop calling you Bones, I will."

Even though she acted like she hated the nickname, she secretly liked it. It was Booth's own special name for her and she liked that. Just as she was about to open her mouth to reply, Booth cut her off.

"But just think about it, Bones, scientific studies have proven that people with nicknames are really well liked."

Judging by the sudden stunned look on Brennan's face, he realized that, that wasn't a good thing to say at that moment. "Damn… did I just say that out loud? I think I better go. Just forget what I said Temperance. I don't want to jeopardize our job and partnership any further."

Finally, Temperance got out of her shock and noticed that Booth was actually leaving and yelled. "Wait! Booth!"

Booth wanted to continue walking out but felt something that made turn around to listen to what she had to say.

This was Brennan's chance to finally admit her true feelings. At first she was at a loss of words, but when she saw the expression on Booth's face, she had to make it right, for him at least.
