A Love Rock

She liked him. And she threw a rock at him.

She wasn't sure how the whole thing had gone wrong. They had been taking a nice walk on some random planet even she wasn't quite sure the name of. But there were trees and a few birds singing a little monotonous tune. The breeze was blowing, cooling the warm air into a sweet, sweet, comfortable atmo.

And he was with her. She loved the way his face got all screwed up and uncomfortable whenever she said something unladylike. But he'd always let go of his inhibitions and smile eventually. She was sure that smile had ripped at many a heart and it ripped at her's now. Content-ness filled her because he allowed her that special smile when they were alone. It had "Kaylee's smile" written all over it. Anyone else tried to get it from him and she would go at them with a wrench.

They had taken a rest by a stream, sitting on one of the larger rocks that made it's home near it. She rested her head on Simon's shoulder and smiled when she could feel his blush rise up. She didn't think he would ever be comfortable around girls he liked. But the awkwardness made her giggle. It made Jayne want to punch him but that was his problem.

He calmed down a little and got up the nerve to put an arm around her.

"We should get away more often." She had just barely gotten her words out when she heard Mal shouting for her. At this Simon leapt up, afraid of the Captain catching him and Kaylee in a compromising situation. Simon was left standing on his feet as the Captain came into the clearing. Kaylee however was knocked from Simon's arms and tripped falling front first.

Simon heard the splash and turned around quickly. Mal stopped right where he was. Kaylee rolled over in the water. Her expression had exchanged its former happiness for a more enraged style.

Simon started babbling, but Kaylee started feeling around in the water. Moments later she had found a rock and threw it at him, hitting him clear in the chest. As he was taken aback by the action and the slight sting of the pointy rock, she got up and walked off.

Simon looked from his muddied up suit vest to Mal.

"Hell hath no fury?" The Captain offered trying to hold in his obvious delight.

Kaylee stormed to her hammock in the engine room and flopped down in it. The water from the stream was dripping to the floor as she swung a little. She liked him. And she threw a rock at him. But he deserved it, she decided firmly. She crossed her arms just as she heard a knock on the entrance.

It was Simon.

He was smiling nervously.

And he was holding a rock.

She allowed him to enter. He did so slowly with his head hanging down.

"I will assume that an apology is in order."

"Oh, shut up, you over-proper git," she threw back at him.

"I just wanted to bring you this rock because I think it has shown me best how much of a pompous halfwit I can be," he looked up at her, "and I figured you might wish to use it again sometime. Because there is no one I would rather have throw a muddy rock at me than you."

Kaylee was a little shocked by how unbelievably stupid Simon sounded but she smiled joyously just the same...

...Until she heard a snort coming from the corridor.

Simon promptly threw the rock he had in his hand down the corridor and judging by the loud grunt that followed he had hit his mark.

"Why you gorram son of a–"

Hearing Jayne's outrage, Simon did the only thing he could think of at that moment:

He scurried away.
