The Puppet is in Love
Chapter 2
Spoilers for Raiden Shogun's Story Quest Act 2
"Oh, Traveler. What a pleasant surprise."
Aether turned around, facing the Raiden Shogun in all her glory. In her hand was a pouch, which clinked with every slight movement. A bag of Mora, Aether presumed.
He smiled. "Oh, hey! Good afternoon, Raiden. What's got you in the streets of Inazuma City at this time of day?" He still felt a bit of embarrassment from the events of only a day ago, but didn't let that change how he interacted with her.
Raiden lifted the bag of coins level to her head, shaking it. "My creator has instructed me to purchase a few items necessary for the date that happens in a few days." She struck a contemplative pose, "...though, she did also request that I should not tell you that. Oh, well."
Aether chuckled. He found it strange that the Raiden Shogun, an almost robotic and systematic person, would carelessly forget such a detail. Nevertheless, he found it comical. Another thing to note for Aether were the words Raiden said. Ei and the Shogun were making such grand plans for their outing, that he couldn't help but feel that he wasn't contributing much at all. If they feel the need to make such incredible preparations for their date, then he should put in as much effort as they should. He can start with the person in front of him, he thought. "Do you need any help with that?"
Raiden pursed her lips in frustration. "...As much as it pains me to say, yes." She materialized a scroll that went all the way from her arm to her toes. Aether's eyes widened from the scroll's length. "I have not purchased anything yet. Quite a lot of these items are things that I am not aware of. I was created for the purpose of maintaining eternity, so I did not endeavor to study anything ephemeral such as these kinds of… frivolities. Frankly, I believe there is no need for these items. Just being in your presence is enough of a date for me."
Aether couldn't help but be flustered at her words, yet she herself remained unabashed. Aether shook his head to help remove any form of embarrassment. "...Right. Well, you found just the right person for the job. I'm absolutely free."
Raiden smiled, an act that made Aether slightly blush. It was rare to see her express herself like this. Yet, it feels more common nowadays. "Thank you, Aether."
"I-It's no problem. I just got done with an especially annoying commission so hanging out and shopping around the streets of Inazuma should help put my mind at ease."
Raiden hummed. "Hmm. Speaking of annoying, where is that flying companion of yours?"
Aether ignored the jab at his friend and smiled. As blunt as always, he thought. "Oh, her? She's still… well… resting after watching our spar yesterday. She said that it drained all the energy from her for the day. I guess that extended to this day, too." Aether murmured thoughtlessly, "...though I guess it was partially because she was a bit frightened of you too."
Raiden blinked. "Am I frightening? Do you find me so, as well?"
Wait… she heard that? Aether could swear that he felt the mood dampen just now, so he sought to fix it as soon as possible. "Oh, no, no! I'm sorry, it's just… I suppose your presence can be somewhat imposing to some people, at times. Not that I feel that way! You're fun to be with now, of course."
Raiden's eyes narrowed. "Now? As opposed to what, did I feel imposing before? Was I frightening to you before?"
Aether could feel a trickle of sweat bead at the top of his forehead. "U-Uh… Well…"
Aether gulped as Raiden stared at him for a moment, before she elicited a small giggle. "I apologize. That was said in jest." She then clipped the bag of coins to the side of her hip, walking a few steps forward. "Now, shall we go? This list of things to purchase is especially long, after all."
Aether stared at her wide eyed. He couldn't believe it. The Raiden Shogun herself, joking. Raiden was still looking at him, waiting for his answer. Aether snapped out of it, catching up to her. "A-Ah, yeah. Let's go. Uh… What's first on the list?" Aether motioned for the list of items, to which Raiden gave. He started looking at the first few items to buy, still astonished at the notion of Raiden making a joke. He didn't let it bother him too much, however, as Raiden clearly wasn't. "Well, let's start with the first few items at the very top, then."
"Alright." Raiden said. She then held out her hand. Aether stared at her, confused. He couldn't tell what exactly she was asking for, so he inquired, "Oh, uh, do you want the list back? Sure, but I feel like I should hold onto it since I know all of the items on here. Might be faster that way."
Raiden shook her head. "No, I do not want the list." She beckoned to Aether with a motion of her hand, "I want to hold your hand."
Immediately, Aether's face burst into red. "W-What?"
"Yesterday, I held your hand, even if it was for the briefest of moments. Yet despite its brevity, it felt pleasant, relaxing, even. I am not sure why this happens, so I want to understand it. I want to know this feeling once more."
Aether hesitated, clearly flustered. Raiden found the expression on his face strange. It seemed as though he was in conflict with something, yet she did not know why. It was a simple request, she figured; harmless to its core. A thought came to her mind, however, one that unsettled her deeply. Perhaps he does not want to hold hands, she thought. Her face scrunched up, that deep upsetting feeling from yesterday coming back. She sought to ask Aether before the unpleasant sensation she was having festered any longer. "I apologize… Do you not want to?"
To Aether, Raiden was completely expressionless, save for her eyebrows furrowing slightly. Even still, that was enough for him to realize. He was slowly getting used to Raiden's subtle changes in expression. He knows that she felt… disheartened, as strange it is to say that about the Raiden Shogun. He didn't want to worry her. "No… no, of course not. It just took me by surprise. I'm fine with holding hands." He was still slightly embarrassed at the notion, but he couldn't help but agree to such an earnest request. He admired the Shogun's bluntness, even if it came across as too blunt at times.
The Raiden Shogun smiled. An aura of joy radiated from her, affecting Aether as well. He still found her honesty in showing her emotions surprising, but was slowly learning to accept it. He found her smile cute. "Thank you. I… appreciate it." Raiden said, her smile growing the slightest bit larger. Aether hoped to see the day where it would evolve to be a grin, but he was content seeing the smile she had now. She held out her hand once more to which Aether nodded in response, taking hold of her hand eagerly.
"Well then… let's go!" Aether grinned, pulling Raiden along. She was surprised by Aether's sudden briskness, but got used to it as they slowed to a walk. She felt herself relax in his presence, holding his hand, forgetting her duties as the Almighty Shogun for just even today. Today, she was just Raiden. Nothing more, nothing less. And she was content with that. Aether took her to all sorts of shops, purchasing all kinds of trinkets and items. Raiden wasn't sure if most of them were necessary for a date, but it didn't really matter to her. She enjoyed her time walking and conversing with Aether, even if it was just mostly him talking and bartering. They bought souvenirs, light novels, and even food, most notably sweets. Raiden noticed the large quantity of sweets they purchased, ranging from Tricolor Dango to Dango Milk. She took note of them as desserts that her creator would typically eat everyday, but some she didn't recognize.
She asked Aether, "Traveler, what are these?" She pointed towards a few dishes.
"Oh, these? Well… they're a variety of dessert foods. This one is mochi, sweet but elegant. A friend of mine makes wonderful mochi and I highly recommend it! This one is manjuu. It feels very refreshing to the mouth when you take a bite of it. It's also transparent in color, which is pretty cool, right?"
Raiden picks a fish-shaped dessert up. "What is… this? It looks like a fish. But it does not feel or smell like one. How strange."
Aether smiled. "That's taiyaki. It's cake that's been delicately handcrafted to look like a fish. Pretty interesting to look at, I'd say. Inside is this sweet filling that definitely fixes any sort of sweet craving you'll get. Go on, try one!"
Raiden placed the taiyaki back onto the platter it was once on. "But we were strictly ordered to only purchase these, not eat—"
"It's fine, trust me!" Aether's smile grew into a big grin. "Ei won't mind one or two missing, I'm sure. Besides, I can just buy another. It's no harm to my pocket, really."
Raiden stared at him, still unsure. Thinking of a way to convince her, Aether then picked up one of the taiyaki and bit into it. In between munching, he said, "See? No problem at all. I know you haven't tried much Inazuman delicacies because… well, you don't really need it, but I'm telling you right now that they're great. Try it!"
Raiden looked at the taiyaki in Aether's hands. She contemplated it for a bit, before ultimately agreeing. She had then suddenly approached Aether and bit into the same taiyaki that he bit into.
Once again, Aether's face turned crimson. "Raiden?!" He peered down at Raiden, who was leaning into his personal space quite a bit. She was slightly hunched over as she was chewing the sweet in Aether's hand. "This is… delicious. Sweet." She said, pushing a strand of her hair back.
He was looking down towards Raiden, something he'd never thought to imagine. The sight of Raiden so close to him, her head near his chest, a clear view of her immaculate beautiful features… It was enough to send his mind into a daze.
Aether pushed the taiyaki onto Raiden's hands as he distanced himself from her. He was covering his face with his hand, trying to hide the blush on his face. "Here… you can have it."
"Are you sure? You took the first bite of it, though. Does that not mean it is yours?" Despite asking for permission, Raiden took another bite of the sweet cake in her hand. She looked quite pleased with the sweet delicacy, something that made Aether laugh even if he still felt flustered.
He faked a cough. "Yes, I'm sure. It's all yours." Raiden smiled, an act that made Aether smile as well. She continued happily munching on it. She reminded him of a small kitten, nibbling on a piece of fish. He chuckled inwardly, finding her actions endearing.
Raiden finished eating soon after, feeling rejuvenated. She had never tasted sweets before in her life, as she found them as equally as unnecessary as any other food. But now, she saw them in a new light. This so-called 'taiyaki' was absolutely nothing like she had experienced before. It was a new feeling. Come to think of it, she had been experiencing a lot of new feelings lately, and it was all because of one man.
She found herself more and more intrigued with him as the days passed. Less time spent thinking about Inazuma's future, and more time spent thinking of him. She thought that spar she had with him yesterday would help her remove the distractions that swirled in her head, yet it did nothing but further her admiration for the Traveler. A scene from a few days ago flashed back to her mind.
That fox; Yae Miko, her creator's friend. She came to Tenshukaku to speak with Ei. She was not present, busy dawdling away inside Aether's tea pot. So the shrine maiden instead conversed with her. Raiden found her presence unbearable, yet strangely she found herself more talkative than usual, accidentally spilling her thoughts pertaining to a certain Traveler. The shrine maiden had a way with words that kept people talking. When Raiden was done, Yae Miko was left staring at her, dumbfounded. Then, she smiled and laughed heartily. She told her that it was love. Raiden thought it was impossible. A puppet like her, in love? It was a concept completely unknown to her. When Miko left, she tried to bury herself in work, contemplating Inazuma's future. And yet, despite her best efforts, she didn't perish the thought. It felt as though… she didn't want to.
"Ah, Raiden, you have a little something on your—" Aether snapped her out of her thoughts, looking at her with a funny smile. He was pointing a finger near his lips.
Raiden wasn't sure what he was talking about. "What is it? Is something the matter?"
Aether tapped the spot he was pointing at. "Over here." Raiden still didn't get it. Frankly, to her, he looked like a fool tapping the corner of his lips like that.
Aether sighed. "Alright, come here." He drew a napkin from his pockets and approached Raiden. She stood still as he held her chin in one hand and cleaned the corners of her mouth with another. Aether smiled, "You had crumbs on your face."
Raiden felt unusually warm in the face. She stuttered, "T-Thank you. I've never eaten before, so I was unaware."
The Traveler grinned. "You liked that taiyaki, huh? Hey, if you want to try any other dessert, feel free. I've got enough Mora to reimburse Ei if needed, and you can finally get started on trying out the delicacies of the world!" He gave her a thumbs up.
Raiden nodded, delighted at the thought of eating more desserts. She grabbed a stick of Tricolor Dango, examining every inch of the treat. "Like you said, I have never needed to eat before; I am a vessel, built for the sole purpose of maintaining eternity. A puppet such as I does not need food for nourishment. However… for indulgence?" She took a bite of the dango, savoring the taste in her mouth. "Then perhaps for that purpose I can see its value." She continued chewing, "Delicious."
Aether laughed. He was glad that Raiden was enjoying herself. He realized that he was starting to see her in a different light. Ei called her a puppet, only an unflinching and unmoving tool in her pursuit of eternity. Even Raiden herself agreed. But judging from yesterday and today's events, he could see that wasn't entirely the case. She wasn't just a puppet. She had feelings and beliefs of her own, too. She liked desserts, much like any other person may like desserts.
He chuckled as Raiden took a bite of a piece of mochi. He figured that he was going to have to stock up on more sweets, as it seems like his circle of friends just received its third dessert connoisseur, just below Paimon and Ei. "Once we're done with our little break here, we should continue. I'm not exactly sure why, but Ei wants a wooden tanuki statue. I know just the place to get one, oddly enough. Paimon has a few of them in her own area inside the tea pot."
Raiden nodded just as she was wiping her mouth clean of any crumbs. "Let us make haste then."
They walked and soon arrived at Netsuke no Gen Crafts, a souvenir shop filled with all sorts of trinkets and doodads. Aether spoke to the shopkeeper, discussing which items he was going to buy. Raiden didn't really have an interest in the conversation, so her eyes wandered. She observed the hustle and bustle of Inazuma's busy Commercial Street, amazed at how lively it was. She remembered it very differently from all those centuries ago. One store that caught her eye was the one just in front of the souvenir shop. It certainly wasn't there all those centuries ago. A pink haired woman was managing the store, dressed in a kimono even she would admit looked high quality. Lining its shelves and walls were kimonos of various types of cloth, all piquing her interest. She looked at her very own kimono, comparing hers to the ones displayed on the store's walls.
"Something catch your eye?"
Raiden looked at Aether, surprised. He caught her in a moment of weakness. She was sure to never lose focus again. "No, not at all. Are our purchases here done?"
Aether grinned. "You can't fool me, Raiden. Come on, you wanna try one of them out?"
Once again, she felt warmth rise to her face. It was a feeling she was getting used to whenever she was with him, she noticed. "A-Absurd. I have no need for such unnecessary things."
He chuckled, "And yet, you tried all those desserts out." She felt her blush intensify. "There's no harm in just looking, right? The lady tending to the shop there is friendly, I promise."
Raiden looked down, unsure. She felt unusually shy, an emotion she wasn't used to. Thinking to herself, she thought it felt… odd, or just plain wrong how she was indulging like this. This isn't her purpose. She was not programmed to invoke feelings of want. She was distracted.
She looked at Aether. He flashed her a smile.
But perhaps… it was fine to be indulgent every once in awhile.
"O-Okay."
"Alright!" Aether beamed. Raiden felt her heart skip a beat. He held her hand and walked towards the shop with her in tow.
"Hello! Welcome, dear customer, to Ogura Textiles and Kimonos—Oh, Miss Kamisato's friend! Long time no see. What brings you here? Please, come in!" The shopkeeper bowed, displaying utmost respect for the Traveler. Raiden arched an eyebrow. She knew that the Kamisato girl was close to the Traveler, but to an extent where even just a store owner knows? Suffice to say, she was certainly curious.
"Hey there, Miss Ogura. Thanks for taking care of that commission last time with Ayaka. Appreciate it. Anyway, my friend over here might be interested in a kimono, so…" Even on a first name basis? Raiden's curiosity was only growing more curious as he talked. She also felt a faint sense of annoyance, but buried it under her growing curiosity. She resolved to ask Aether about their relationship later.
Ogura smiled. "Oh, it was no problem to me. It is my honor to be able to design a customized outfit for Miss Kamisato. And please, Mio is just fine. In any case… Your friend, huh—Huh?!" Ogura Mio's smile dropped, instead replaced by immense shock. "R-Raiden Shogun! Your Excellency! I did not notice your presence, please forgive me!"
Raiden shook her head. "Calm yourself. It is of no problem to me. It is only natural that you would put more of your focus onto a person you recognize."
Ogura Mio gulped. "S-Still… You are Her Excellency after all…"
Aether waved his arms in an X motion. "Just treat her as a normal customer, Miss Mio. No need for fanciful formalities and the like."
Raiden nodded. "I concur. I am not here on any official business. Just treat me as you would any other customer."
The pink-haired shopkeeper looked hesitant at first, before nodding meekly. "O-Okay… Sure. Well, uh, w-what would you like to get started with, dear customer?"
The Shogun looked to the Traveler for a moment, as if asking for his approval. Aether nodded, giving her an encouraging smile. That was enough of a push for her to start asking. "I would like to try a few of the kimonos you have on display. Are they to my size?"
Mio nodded. "I'm sure we have a few that would fit your stature, but I'd have to measure you first, i-if that's okay."
"Please, go ahead." Raiden felt somewhat excited at the thought of wearing a new kimono, all the while Mio was measuring her. She looked at Aether who had a big, goofy grin on his face. Raiden couldn't help but smile back.
"All done!" Mio smiled, "Which kimonos do you want to try out?"
Raiden pointed at a few on display, but Aether noticed her gaze lingered on one. Yet, for some reason, she didn't choose it.
Mio scanned through the kimonos she picked. "Alright. I'll be right back, I should have a few of them to your measurements in storage." She left soon after.
Aether nudged Raiden, which earned her attention. He tilted his head towards a specific kimono. "What about that one?"
Raiden's cheeks were painted a light hue of pink. "I-I was not aware you saw me looking at it."
Aether huffed in amusement. "You weren't exactly subtle about it."
"I…" She started, "...the colors of that kimono are beautiful. They are strikingly vibrant and exuberant. However…" She pursed her lips, a frown forming on her face. Aether didn't like the looks of it. "...I don't believe it would suit me. It is far too… animated. I would only ruin such a beautiful dress."
Aether stared at the dress, a deep contemplative look on his features. He shook his head before looking at Raiden, "I think it would look cute on you, though."
Raiden blushed maddeningly. Her face turned scarlet from her ears to her cheeks. "W-What?"
"Hey there, I'm back!" Mio approached them, carrying three sets of kimonos packaged in compact boxes, with a clear display on each. She sat them down on the floor before addressing Raiden. "So, dear customer, which one do you want to try first—Eh?!" Mio blinked. She could swear she just saw Her Excellency blushing intensely like a maiden in love.
Raiden immediately composed herself, with most of the red hue all but gone, save for a slight dusting of crimson on her cheeks she couldn't manage to remove. She cleared her throat, "I would like to try the blue kimono first. Do you have any dressing rooms?"
Mio stared at Raiden, completely perplexed. She could've sworn the Shogun was blushing intensely just now, but perhaps she was just seeing things. She shook her head out of her daze as she noticed the Shogun's eyebrows furrowing in response to her silence. She didn't dare anger the Raiden Shogun, even if it were only mild irritation. "I-I'm sorry, yes. We have a few dressing rooms inside. Do you want to try them out now?"
Raiden nodded. "Yes."
Mio smiled in response. "Alright, follow me then, dear customers."
Before they could start walking however, Aether cut in. "Oh, and Miss Mio?"
Both Raiden and Mio looked back to face him. "Yes?"
Aether pointed with a thumb at the kimono that he and the Shogun were discussing just moments prior. "She'd like to try this out, too. Do you have a size for her?"
Raiden's eyes widened. "Traveler, I'm not sure if I should—"
Mio interrupted her with a shrill voice, "Oh, most definitely! That would look gorgeous on Her Excellency! Come, come, let's head to the back so I can pick a size for her up! I'll lead you to the dressing room, as well!" She left first, leaving the two behind.
Raiden's face scrunched up. "I had told you that it would not fit a person such as I—"
"And I told you that it would look cute on you." He smiled, earning a radiant blush on Raiden's face. "Just trust me on this. Come on, let's catch up to Miss Mio!" He held her hand as they went to the back, just as Mio said.
Raiden stayed silent for the duration of their short walk. They arrived and Mio soon came back with the requested kimono.
"The dressing room's right about here." She sat the kimono's box down next to the others right by the side of the dressing room's door. "Which kimono would you like to try first, dear customer?"
Raiden stared at the kimonos, contemplating. She was slightly nervous at the thought of putting something new on. It was another feeling she wasn't accustomed to. "P-Perhaps the blue one first."
Mio gave her the dress as she led her inside the dressing room, closing the curtains from behind her. After a few minutes, Raiden came out with the kimono on full display. It was a dark blue color, as if imitating the night sky. Its features included a crescent moon shaded black just underneath the obi, and white branches spread across from the bottom of the kimono all the way up to the bottom of the crescent moon. It looked magical on the Shogun.
"Wow." Aether said, stunned at Raiden's beauty. "That looks beautiful on you." Raiden smiled at his compliment.
"It certainly does!" Mio piped in, "It complements your steely dark gaze, giving you this 'mysterious beauty' vibe!"
"Dark gaze?" Raiden asked. Was she mocking her?
"E-Erm, maybe Her Excellency wants to try out the other kimonos?" Ignoring Mio's comments for now, she tried out the other kimonos. She felt comfortable wearing them, but didn't exactly liked them as she hoped. She could definitely say they suited her, but she wasn't really as interested in them like she thought.
The last remaining kimono was the vibrant one. She stared at the case as she held it in her hands. She looked towards Aether who gave her an encouraging smile yet again. It felt like he was encouraging her a lot today, and she was surprised at how effective it was at pushing her to do things she may otherwise not do. She nodded, a determined look on her face. Even if she believed it unfit for her, the Traveler believed that it would look… cute on her, and that was enough for her to at least try. She closed the dressing room curtains and started putting on the kimono.
When she was done, she opened the curtains promptly. She looked down, unable to meet Aether's eyes. She felt self conscious, shy at the thought of Aether scrutinizing her. She was afraid of him saying that it looked ridiculous on her, like she originally thought. It was odd, to say the least. A frightening feeling she had never experienced before. This man was making her feel so many things, both positive and negative, and she was frankly having a hard time dealing with the influx of emotions. Slowly, she garnered enough courage to peek at Aether, to see what he thought.
He was absolutely floored. "Wow," he said. "You're adorable," he continued.
Raiden's face burst into a sea of red. She found it difficult to speak, pursing her lips in frustration. Aether stood up from his seat, still marveling at the beauty in front of him. "You… look really cute. Wow. Just… wow. That kimono looks incredibly pretty on you! And… well, so are you."
Raiden's knees started to buckle. She felt her legs weakening every time he complimented her. His barrage of praise felt different from before. She would previously only smile or nod at his compliments, but wearing this dress, they just felt different to hear for her. Aether held her up by her arm, concern etched on his face. "Hey, you okay?" This only made Raiden's face turn warmer.
She moved a few steps back, attempting to calm herself. "I-I'm quite alright, thank you." She manages to reel in her embarrassment and hide her immense blush after a moment.
"You sure?"
"...Mhm." Raiden nods, her bangs covering her eyes.
"...Alright, if you're sure." Aether glanced at her, taking in her dress fully once more. She was right. It was lively and incredibly vibrant, a complete contrast to the Raiden Shogun's demeanor and appearance. However, she was also wrong, Aether noted. It looked beautiful on her. A floral pattern was spread all over the kimono, giving this aura of a fresh, summer-like elegance. The most striking part of the dress, however…
...Was that it was pink.
All the other previous kimonos that she picked were neutral in color. Dark and mysterious, yet commanding and leader-like, befitting the image of a serious ruler. This kimono she was now wearing, of pink dye and floral patterns, suited a young girl filled with hopes and dreams. Looking at it was like a breath of fresh air.
Raiden believed it to be unfitting for her. Aether thought the opposite. To him, Raiden looked incredible. Charming. Lady-like. But most of all…
Cute.
To Aether, it didn't matter if the kimono wasn't what one would typically associate with a leader. It looked cute. She looked cute. He liked it. But most importantly…
Raiden looked at her dress. She was nervous at first, unsure. Aether looked at her face after a few seconds… and saw the faintest of smiles. She was looking at every nook and cranny of the dress, completely fascinated with how it looked. She stared at the flowery designs, entranced. She looked giddy with excitement. Well, at least as giddy as the Raiden Shogun could be.
Most importantly… she liked it.
Aether smiled at her. "I told you it would look good on you. It fits you perfectly."
Raiden, embarrassed, averted her gaze. She peeked at him from the corner of her eyes, muttering in a low voice. "...Thank you."
The contrast of the serious Shogun and the adorable Raiden was incredibly evident to Aether now. Man, she is cute, he thought.
Aether faced Mio. "We'll be taking this one."
Mio beamed, "A most excellent choice, dear customers! I'll have that packaged for you right away! Or would you rather wear it now?"
Aether looked back towards Raiden, "What'll it be?"
Raiden was looking at her dress all over, still mesmerized by its appearance. She looked thrilled, to the point that even her eyes looked like they were smiling. It seems she didn't hear him.
He smiled and shook his head. It was rare to see the Raiden Shogun so excited over something. It's the first time he's seen her this way, after all. He looked back at Mio and shook his bag of Mora, addressing her. "She'll wear it now, thank you."
Mio nodded. "Okay! Let's handle the payment. This way, dear customer."
She started walking away, which urged Aether to beckon to Raiden. "Let's go, Raiden."
Taken by surprise, she jumps slightly. She immediately fixes her posture to her typical commanding pose. "Y-Yes. Let us go."
After a quick purchase and expressions of gratitude to one another, they soon leave the shop. Mio originally offered the kimono for free, calling it 'a service to Her Excellency.' Raiden refused, however, reiterating her request of treating her as just a normal customer, rather than the Archon that they revered. After a bit of back and forth, they were able to convince Mio in the end that they would pay for the dress. It was amusing to Aether, as opposed to Raiden's irritation with the situation.
Raiden linked her hand together with Aether's as they walked, their steps in rhythm with one another. She was still wearing the kimono they bought, with her previous outfit tucked away in Aether's near unlimited inventory. The sight of the Shogun herself walking down the commercial street of Inazuma City was odd enough for any onlooker, but with a new kimono, a colorful one that any citizen of Inazuma wouldn't expect the Shogun to wear? It was surprising for them, to say the least. Not to mention, it looked like she was sticking quite close to the Traveler, almost glued to him with their vicinity. Murmurs of rumors started to begin, of what the Traveler's relationship is with their dearly beloved Shogun, and her new change in outfit. However, Raiden couldn't really care any less. To any outsider, she looked neutral; the same expression she wore everyday. But to Aether, he could tell that she was at the very least…
Happy.
Aether smiled. It was good to know that she's enjoying their time, he thought. He looked at the list again to see that they only had a few items left to purchase. He nodded, knowing where exactly to buy them. Fortunately they were near. Whilst he was examining the list, he felt something squeeze his hand.
He looked over to Raiden, who looked like she had something on her mind. "What's up?"
"I would like to express my gratitude once more. Thank you. That is all."
Aether grinned. "No biggie. I didn't really do anything, though. That was all you."
Raiden shook her head. "You encouraged me to push forward with it. That is enough for me to express gratitude."
"Well, when you put it that way…" He smiled, "...No problem!" Raiden smiled as well.
They continued walking, going down the steps onto the lower levels of Inazuma City. They passed by Kiminami Restaurant, where Anna nodded in respect towards the Traveler. She fixed her posture immediately after, however, upon seeing who he was with. The city was in this sort of nervous disarray, both in mix of reverence and curiosity of the Shogun and her illustrious companion, the Traveler.
"Traveler, I have a question."
"Go ahead, shoot."
Raiden had a questioning look on her face. "Shoot? Why would I shoot you? I merely wanted to ask you a question. Beyond that, I have no means to shoot you with. I carry no weapons with me, besides the Musou Isshin."
"Uh, no, that's not what I…" Aether chuckled awkwardly. It seems she wasn't aware of some phrases just yet. "I meant go ahead and ask me." He laughed.
"Oh." Raiden looked as if she just had an epiphany. "I see. Very well." She cleared her throat, "What is your relationship with the eldest daughter of the Kamisato clan?"
"Oh, Ayaka?" Raiden's eye twitched. First name basis again, she thought. "She's a good friend. We met during the… well, uh…"
"You lended her help during the Civil War, correct?" Raiden shakes her head, "Do not worry. I do not mind. My creator gives no fault to anyone during that time, so to an extent, I do not as well. After that… duel her and I had inside Raiden Makoto's consciousness, we have come to an agreement on a lot of things."
"I see." Aether thinks back on that fateful day. He still can't believe that their duel lasted for five centuries. "Well… yeah, I met her around that time. We became good friends afterwards. We don't see each other too often, though, considering her responsibilities as the Shirasagi Himegimi and mine as a traveler."
"And that is all there is to it? Just friends?" Raiden leaned in closer to Aether, her face only a few inches away from his.
The Traveler gulped. He felt like he had to answer this question very carefully, lest he feel the wrath of the Shogun. "U-Uh… yeah, we're just friends. That's about it."
Raiden's sharp look on him lasted for a few more seconds, before relenting and giving him space. "Okay. That is all I needed to know."
Aether fixed his scarf in place. "If you don't mind, why the question? Do you need something from her?"
Raiden averted her gaze, moving her face away so that he couldn't see it. She whispered, "...No particular reason. I do not need anything from her."
Aether nodded. "If you say so." He dropped the subject, being keen on focusing on their task instead. They went to a few stalls to purchase the last few items, but her question still lingered on his mind. He was curious. He didn't believe Raiden to just ask for 'no particular reason' as she said, and she was especially insistent on asking if their relationship was only just friends. He chuckled inwardly. If he didn't know any better, he'd have pegged her as having a crush on him—
A scene flashed back to him.
"Aether, I love you."
"WHAT?!"
…
…I am an idiot, he thought.
They make their last purchase at a shop at the base of the city, near the giant tree in Hanamizaka. The day was ending soon, as the sun was setting on the horizon.
Aether dusted his hands clean. "Well, that's the last of it. That took some time, didn't it?" He grinned, facing Raiden.
"Yes, it did." She let a faint smile creep up on her face. "Thank you for your help today, Aether."
Aether smiled. "No problem! Anytime, Raiden. Where do I drop the items off, by the way?"
"I believe at the front gates of Tenshukaku, but it depends. Perhaps my creator would prefer the items dropped off at your tea pot? I am not sure. Perhaps you can ask her tomorrow."
"Ah, gotcha." Aether nodded. "It's all tucked away safely in my inventory, anyway. I'll just ask Ei tomorrow."
They stared at each other, unsure as to how to proceed with their conversation. They knew the night was ending, but both weren't very keen of that fact.
Raiden broke the silence. "I… enjoyed our time together, Aether. Like I said before, just your presence is enough to comfort me."
Aether blushed slightly. "I enjoyed today as well, of course."
Raiden giggled, "It's like we are already on a date. I can only hope that Ei doesn't feel too jealous."
Aether chuckled. "Didn't take you for a jokester, Raiden. Don't take it in the wrong way though! It's refreshing."
"Yes, well…" Raiden's features scrunched up to a pensive look. "...you are partly to blame."
"Huh? Me?" Aether scratched his head, puzzled at Raiden's statement.
Raiden glanced at him briefly, before she stared at the scene in front of her. She looked at the children playing and frolicking about within Hanamizaka's boundaries. She had a contemplative expression on, almost wistful, even. She turned back to Aether, "May I speak to you? I have something… important to tell you."
The Traveler nodded. "Sure. Of course. Right here?"
Raiden shook her head. "No… we should take a walk. To the outskirts of Inazuma City. Away from prying eyes, and away from any noise."
They walked away from the bright lights of the city and into its outskirts. Aether was curious as to what she was going to say, but kept quiet, letting Raiden be the one to speak first instead. They stopped near the dirt road outside of Konda Village. Raiden looked at the night sky, staring at the different stars in its vast landscape. Aether didn't really pay attention to the stars, however, as his gaze was glued at Raiden. She looked bright, almost glowing in her vibrant pink kimono amidst the backdrop of the darkness of Narukami Island. Only one word was in his mind right now to describe what he was looking at.
Beautiful.
"Traveler. No, rather… Aether." Raiden faced him, wearing a serious expression. "Recently, I have been troubled by a few things."
Aether nodded. "I'm all ears."
"I…" She starts, but hesitates. She's unsure if she should be sharing her troubles. In the first place, she was a puppet. She shouldn't have any, she thinks to herself. She looks towards Aether, who was giving her an encouraging smile. Again. And again, it works. She feels more determined than ever to talk.
"I have been feeling… strange, lately. I feel all sorts of things. Things I would never usually feel. I feel sorrow, anger, bitterness, despondence, forgetfulness, uncertainty, but most of all…"
She keeps her eyes on Aether, never once straying from his. "Happiness. I feel joy. Frequently. I have never experienced these things before. At first, I thought the cause was Ei tampering with my programming, but… that was not it at all."
She steps forward, two steps closer to Aether. "I realized it yesterday. That spar we had… I felt an incredible range of emotions that day."
Another two steps closer. "It was so apparent to me that frankly, I was baffled at how I did not realize it sooner. I feel… a lot of things. Feelings that are not part of my programming. And I know the cause now."
She takes another two steps. Their faces were now mere inches from one another. Aether steps back, but Raiden closes in the distance immediately after, leaving no room for him to breathe. Aether gulps, "...A-And what would that be?"
He could feel her breath on him, as their noses nearly touched. They stayed like that, just staring at each other, before Raiden finally broke the silence.
"You."
"W-What?"
"You are the reason. I feel sadness when you leave my side. Anger when you mention another woman, especially someone close to you. Determined when you smile at me. Happiness when I am with you. I am able to joke with you, something I never thought I would ever do. You, Aether… are insufferable. You are always on my mind. My mind is in constant disarray by the thought of you. You are a distraction…"
She closes her eyes. "...but a distraction I welcome. A feeling I do not hate. Your mere presence is enough to soothe me."
She holds his cheek in one hand as she opens her eyes. "So please… take responsibility. I am still waiting. Give me… No, give us an answer soon."
Soon after, she separates from him, a faint blush on her cheeks. Aether sported a brighter one, covering his face in its entirety.
Raiden smiled. "That is all. I hope you consider it soon, Traveler. I will be waiting until then." She turns, intent on walking back. "Good night, Aether. Today was especially pleasant. I'll see you on the day of the date."
"O-Oh, good night. See you." He couldn't think of anything better to say, his mind still a mess after that outpour of emotions from Raiden. He wanted to say more to her, but couldn't find the words to say. He needed time to recuperate from Raiden's critical strike of words.
She walks away, with Aether staring at her back. Her pink figure slowly got smaller and smaller from the distance, until finally Aether couldn't see it anymore.
…
An answer soon, huh…
He blinked. She was completely serious, so he felt he should treat it with the same amount of importance. She must've pondered for a long time to come to that conclusion, and Aether figured he should do the same. He wanted to think about his decision long and hard, so he planned to do so the entire day tomorrow. But for now, he felt exhausted. Not from all the purchases and walking, but rather from Raiden's confession.
He materialized the tea pot in front of him, opening the lid to enter. Inside it was dark, imitating the night time of the real world. He walked towards his room, right next to Paimon's room, deciding a good night's rest would help him refresh his brain for contemplation. He plopped onto the bed, a large grunt coming out of him. He looks towards the ceiling, thinking and looking back. He felt his heart skip every step that Raiden took, and felt it beating extremely fast at their close proximity. Her last words left an impact on him tonight, and he resolved to take them seriously. But for now, he needed to sleep. Exhaustion slowly crawled in, and as he moved into a deep slumber, only one thing was on his mind.
Man, she was cute today.
A/N: Thank you once again for reading, and I hope you enjoyed!
I've been done with my school term for awhile now so I had more free time to write this.
I wrote this chapter with the idea of separating Raiden from Ei, making her more of her own person, rather than just a puppet or vessel of her creator. Raiden's kimono and her manner of speech I hope would be clear indicators of this. She'll speak less formal as time passes and use more contractions (like can't and don't). Hope this isn't too spoiler-y!
Next chapter will be focused on Ei, with the fourth most likely being the date between the three. Hope you look forward to that!
I'll update the chapter along the week most likely, to check for any spelling or grammatical errors, or perhaps just change words around to fit the scenario better.
Oh yeah, there was also that one review which I thought was funny. Someone claimed that the Traveler never defeated the Shogun, which is completely false of course if you've played the game. Sure, he had a ton of help from sources like Yae Miko and the ambitions of every single person whose Vision was taken away, but a victory is still a victory. Additionally, Raiden Shogun's mind was in complete disorder in the events of Chapter 1, so she was easily distracted by Aether's antics.
That is all, thanks again for reading everyone, and I appreciate all the positive reception this fanfic has been receiving, including reviews. I read every single review and appreciate all the kind words! Thank you!
