A Firefly story
Even after everyone knew we were getting married, nobody expected me to change my name. It wasn't necessary. We could have just remained ourselves.
Kaylee Frye, Simon Tam. Just ... married now. It's common enough these days, two names in one couple.
But it isn't what I wanted. I wanted my name to change when I said those vows. Wanted even my identification card to show that I'd found my match and my home.
I'm different now too. These months on Serenity have helped me grow. I'm not back home on planet doing chores for my father anymore; the old name doesn't fit me now. Love has changed me that much, and I want the world to know it every time they say my name.
And I'll never forget the day I finally received that box of calling cards I'd ordered special and had sent all the way out here, nor the shiny happiness on Kaylee's face when she pulled one out and read in curly letters, 'Dr. and Mrs. Simon Frye.'
Besides, what could be bad about losing a surname that's still on the lists of half the bounty hunters in the verse?
