Chapter Seven- Landing
Judy Hopps got out of her police cruiser after somehow driving all of the way to the Zootopian Air Base steering with only one foot and a crutch. She drove up to the guard tower guarding the main airfield and rolled down her window "Officer Judy Hopps, ZPD" she said holding her badge in front of the rhino in the booth "welcome to MacArthur Air Base, Officer Hopps, park your vehicle next to the airfield" the guard said before the barrier was raised.
The bunny slowly got out of the cruiser and shut the door behind her, she then grabbed her crutches and slowly walked towards the airfield. The sound of helicopters and chatter filled the air as she looked around for the one who had sent for her.
Chief Bogo's uniform made the buffalo easy to spot though, and Judy began walking towards him as quickly as she could. The chief was standing next to a mammal in a camouflage uniform and talking to them, she would have been able to hear the conversation if there wasn't so much noise.
The chief turned around as he noticed her and walked over "Chief, you asked for me?" The buffalo stopped and nodded "Hopps, I'm glad you could come here on such a short notice" she watched the mammal he was speaking with walk over as the chief spoke.
"Well when you told me it was about Nick, I came as quick as I could" she said speaking the truth "well, I have some news for you" he said walking away and notioning her to follow. She grew concerned as she walked with him "what happened?" She asked as her ears drooped down.
"There's no need to worry about it Mrs Hopps, you'll find out in a minute" a gazelle said as she walked over to them, "this is station chief Lindsay Laswell, she's one of the heads of this operation" the gazelle held her hand out for Judy to shake. "It's a pleasure meeting you Mr's Hopps" Judy shook the offered hand with her ears still down "you too" she said before jumping as the sound of a jet took off.
"What is this about though?" She asked looking at the jet that took off, but instead she saw a large helicopter approaching the airfield. Chief Bogo stepped forward and waved his hooves in the air as the craft got closer.
. . .
Chief Adrian Bogo watched the helicopter descend and saw Captain Frederick Manson in the window as it touched the ground.
The buffalo grinned as he walked forward, he could see officers Grizzoli and Fangmeyer in the window as well.
Manson was the first to step off but didn't walk over to him, instead he and Officer Grizzoli carried Officer Wolford down onto the ground, followed by what looked like Officer Delgato, who was carried by Officers Nick Wilde and Johnathan Fangmeyer.
Wolford was handed to Detective Catherine Frost, who held the wolf up by the arms as the group of officers walked slowly towards Bogo.
The wolf was visibly bloody, even from a distance Bogo could see blood dripping from the officer as he was carried towards them.
As they got off the helicopter, Manson walked in front of all the officers and the buffalo's grin grew a bit wider as his old comrade got closer.
The officers of SWAT Team 1 walked behind the grizzly bear. They were beaten, bloodied and tired after over two days of fighting for their lives, the way they walked told it all.
The grizzly bear took a cigar out of his mouth and held it with two paw pads as smoke billowed from his nose, all while he and the officers behind him walked.
Manson flicked the cigar onto the ground as he drew closer to Bogo, then stepped on the cylinder before walking up to him and holding his hand out.
Bogo took the handshake without hesitation, making the bear smile as they shook hands firmly "give me a sitrep on Team's 1 and 2" the buffalo shook his head "they're still in there, we're gonna get them out" Bogo assured, it was met with a nod.
"I thought you were dead" Bogo said in all seriousness, only to get a wry laugh from the officer "and I thought you'd be used to it by now" Bogo laughed in return "well you got me there" he said with a smile.
However Bogo quickly turned his attention to Team 1 "Team 1, there's an ambulance on the way to bring you to the hospital, you've all certainly outdone yourselves" there was a variation of answers as Officer Grizzoli stepped forward "I couldn't agree more, sir, but if it wasn't for Price we'd all be dead" Bogo looked at the officer mentioned and simply nodded.
"Despite that, you've all shown exemplary bravery and courage today" Bogo said truthfully, before he could continue however, Bogo was called out "Adrian, we need to talk" he looked at the officer who had called him, with anger that immediately subsided.
"Give us a minute, Hopps make sure that ambulance arrives in two minutes and that Wolford is rushed to the hospital" Bogo ordered with one finger up as he was brought to the side by Officer Price.
Bogo could see a slight bit of anger in the officer's eyes as he looked at him, the bear seemingly relieving that anger by taking out another cigar as they walked.
"That sure was something Bogo" at first the buffalo was confused by this statement "what does that mean?" He asked as the bear took out a lighter and wedged the cigar in his mouth.
"It was a shitshow, is what I mean! SWAT were sent in half-assed and unassessed, it was suicide" "and you think I knew that?!" Bogo shot back angrily, only getting a frustrated sigh from the bear.
"No I don't, I just think it could've been done a lot cleaner, SWAT had no idea what they were up against" Bogo looked down "it was worse than I thought then" he said shaking his head.
"A lot worse, that bastard has more guns than we have men at this point" Manson said in between the multiple metallic clinks of his lighter, followed by a grunt of frustration "the point is though, at least we rescued your officer" the bear said fiddling with his lighter.
"Yeah, but look at the cost" Bogo said gesturing towards Team 1, only getting a seemingly out of place chuckle in response.
"Speaking of . . ." Manson said as he finally lit his cigar, the two turned to the SWAT Team "I'm impressed with Team 1's performance, they show potential" Bogo only laughed.
"You're just saying that Manson, they're our best but they're not that good" Manson only shook his head, pulling the cigar out of his mouth and holding it in his paw pads "no, endurance wise . . . They're on par with the SAS, they'd make good soldiers–" "But they're not, Manson" Chief Bogo interjected and heard Manson's iconic chuckle as he responded.
The grizzly pointed to Officer Wilde "Wilde, over there, they told me he fell three stories after getting his ass blown up, and he was still completely combat effective even with a concussion and his injuries" the chief's eyes squinted "it doesn't take a genius to tell that they got fucked up, and that's SAS material Adrian, everyone except the tiger fought back there and I bet there's a reason for that" Bogo stared at Manson a bit angrily.
"Your point?" The bear shook his head again and wedged the cigar in his mouth "my point is, I want to join Team 1 when they go back in" the buffalo laughed "I'd agree but . . . Team 1 is done . . . like you said, they just went through hell and back" smoke billowed from the bear's nose as he spoke "doesn't mean they can't do it again, it's far too early to pull the CIA and military in."
"And you brought in a damn gunship, it's not happening Jonas" the chief could see Manson thinking just by his face "you want this bastard dead, right?" "I do, but I don't want Team 1 going back in after what they've been through" Manson held his paw pad up.
"D-do you have any idea what I just told you?! They'll live" Manson said in a burst of anger before calming down. "Look, give them time to recover, and when they do, I want to go back in with them."
Adrian Bogo knew that Manson wouldn't budge on his request, so he ran it through his head. Manson, with his many skills, assets and leadership, would be more than an advantage to Team 1, but Bogo was unsure whether the SWAT team even could go back in, just by looking at they're injuries.
"Fine, let me just ask you one question" Bogo said, giving in "who exactly are you calling in?" There was a grin from the bear "who do you think?" Bogo sighed, already believing he knew the answer "how many teams?" "as many as you need, they should be sufficient backup for your SWAT Teams" he said blowing smoke downward.
The sirens of multiple ambulances filled the two mammal's ears as they looked at the SWAT Team being carried into the vehicle "go with them, we'll continue this later" Bogo said, dismissing his friend and ending the conversation.
Manson left without a word.
Officer Leonard Grizzoli was sitting in an ambulance after being checked for any severe injuries, luckily for him there were none, it was mainly the rest of his team that he was worried about.
The back door opened suddenly, revealing the hulking brown figure of Officer Price, the grizzly sat down next to him with a cigar in his mouth.
"Wilde, Fangmeyer, Delgato and Wolford are en route to the hospital, why are you still here?" He looked at the bear and shook his head "I'm just worried" Price sighed "I understand . . . But they'll be fine, I know from experience" Grizzoli couldn't help but laugh a little "oh yeah . . . Forgot how many years you've been in the force."
Grizzoli watched Price reach into his pocket and pull out a pack of cigars, pulling one out and offering it to him "cigar? Their 100% Cuban" The lion put his hand up in dismissal "I . . . Don't smoke but thanks, you shouldn't be smoking in an ambulance anyway" the bear put the cigar away and leaned back in the seat.
"You should be proud of your team, Grizzoli, they've got a lot of endurance" the officer complimented "yeah, but look where it got us, I don't think we'll be on mission again" "nah, you will" the officer denied.
Grizoli looked at Price confused "what makes you so sure?" "I've been injured like that a fair bit, it'll only take a few days for them to recover, trust me on that" to Grizzoli, the old officer really sounded like he was talking from experience and not trying to be optimistic, so he did trust the officer's words.
"My question is, will you be willing to go back in there?" The lion answered without hesitation "definitely, not without backup though, I wanna finish this and I'm sure Fang, Mchorn and the others do too" he said earnestly.
"Good" Price nodded "I was thinking the same thing, you might just be sent back in when your team recovers, this ain't over yet" Grizzoli nodded at this "you're damn right it isn't . . . if that does happen though, I'll ask the chief if you could assist" the bear sat up.
"That sounds good to me, your team'll make it through, see you at the station" Price said, getting out of the vehicle.
