Kate Lockley gratefully accepted her hotdog from the vendor, her stomach rumbling demandingly. Kate moved away from the cart, biting into her hotdog and lifting her face to the sun.

"Mmm."

It had been far too long since she had a simple moment like this. Just walking through a park on a sunny day, eating a hotdog. The Great American Tour hadn't exactly gone as she imagined it, but here she was in lovely Colorado Springs and she was going to enjoy it, dammit!

Kate was so preoccupied with actively enjoying the Colorado sunshine that she jumped when a pair of strong hands gripped her upper arms.

"Katie?"

Kate blinked in shock. "Pete? Pete Shanahan? What are you doing here?"

Pete grinned at her, his hair glinting in the sunlight. "Sam lives here."

Pete took the hand of the blonde woman next to him, pulling her forward. "Samantha Carter met Kate Lockley. We're getting married soon," Pete told Kate, a dopey grin on his face.

"Hello." The woman, Samantha, nodded at Kate. She had a small tense smile on her face.

Kate gave her a tight-lipped smile in return. "Hi."

Pete slipped his arm around Samantha's waist. "Kate's father was a cop. A damn good one too. So, are you still with the LAPD? I heard you made detective."

Kate grimaced. "Let's just say we had a difference in opinion. I'm traveling around America at the moment."

Pete shook his head. "Wow, I can't imagine you as a civilian."

Kate shrugged. "Couple of years ago neither could I. Couldn't imagine quite a few other things as well. Just goes to show you."

Pete nodded. "Yeah, I guess it does."

Pete looked between Kate and Samantha. "Hey, why don't we go get a drink? Catch up on old times? It's been years."

Kate bit her lip. "Ah, yeah, sure."

"Great!" Pete grinned. "Sam?"

"Um, okay." The she jumped and reached into her jacket pocket, pulling out a vibrating cell phone. "Carter." She turned slightly away. "Yeah. Uh huh."

"Sam's an Airforce Major," Pete said proudly. "And she's an astrophysicist."

Kate raised an eyebrow. "So why is she marrying you."

Pete nudged her. "Very funny."

The cell phone was snapped shut. "I'm sorry, Pete. They need me at work. It's an emergency."

"Yeah, sure. Hey, that meeting with your dad still on?"

"As far as I know." Samantha kissed Pete on the cheek. "I'll call you later." With that she was gone, sprinting across the park.

"Isn't she great?"

Oh boy. Did he have it bad or what? He had it so bad that he couldn't see how uncomfortable Samantha was.

"Yeah, she's a keeper. So, about that beer…?"

Pete stared out of his car window at the house he brought. The house that was back on the market not an hour after Sam had seen it.

Well, there went that dream.

He had all this time off, for the transfer, the wedding and the honeymoon. For nothing really.

Pete flipped open his phone. "Kate? Hi, it's Pete. You got room on your tour for one more?"
