"Anou...Shishido-san?"
Ootori Choutarou's hesitating whisper cut through the silence of the room. He knew he should have been letting his senpai sleep, but it was the night before the final selection for the Junior Senbatsu team, and he couldn't help but feel a little nervous.
With a sleepy groan, Shishido rolled over to face his partner. His voice was still rough with sleep, and Ootori knew without looking that his friend was wearing a mild scowl and wrinkling his eyebrows up.
"Geez, Choutarou...It's 4 a.m. What're you doing awake?"
"Etooo..."
Now that his senpai had answered him, Ootori wasn't sure he could really say out loud what was wrong. It was a little embarrassing, after all. How could he tell Shishido-san that he just wanted to know that no matter what happened during this training camp, their partnership wasn't going to change? It sounded a little pathetic, even in Ootori's own mind. But wasn't it strange how just the slightest of whispers had managed to wake his Shishido-senpai? It was like his partner was sensitized to him.
"Um...Shishido-san...After tomorrow..."
He could feel his face heating up. Oh, why couldn't he be brave and just spit it out?
"Choutarou..."
And then Shishido-san's rough voice cut him off, saving Ootori like he so often did on the tennis court.
"Relax, and get some sleep. Everything'll still be the same after tomorrow."
Ootori blinked as he felt his own breath catch, before. Yes, it seemed his partner had come to know him very well indeed.
"Hai, Shishido-san."
He couldn't help the smile that crept to his lips as he rolled over, away from Shishido-san in case his senpai cracked open his eyes and caught sight of that stupid grin. Ootori still couldn't sleep, but this time, it was for a totally different reason.
