CHAP 4 It's The Only Way
A sea of red and blue swarmed into the stadium, hardly taken any notice of each other expect for the occasional yelling to say the other team would lose. The sky over the closed roof grew dark, threatening to give way to floods of water. The fans didn't care though; their only concern was the game that started in an hour under a grey roof that kept them nice and dry.
My eyes slowly scanned the area. There were six official entrances for the fans to use going into the stadium, two more where the teams would come from, and so far I had spotted at least five emergency exits. The place had so many ways to get in and out that you wouldn't be able to track someone coming in or leaving. With so many people there was almost no way to figure out who was an enemy, friend or just a nobody.
Someone's elbow knocked me. Quickly they apologized, their voice strangely familiar.
"Snake?"
The tall man turned, "Adrienne, hi."
"What are you doing here?" I asked, bottling away my sudden panic.
"Um, security-"
I shook my head murmuring, "No, you can't be here."
"Adrienne what's wrong?"
I refused to meet his eyes as I said I had to go and ran off, ignoring the call after me. Eventually I got lost in the mass of people.
"Addy! Over here!"
Vaguely I could see a hand waving above the crowd. Two blond boys stood beside each other, one in red, and the other in blue.
Solemnly I made my way over to them and quickly apologized for my behaviour the night before. They just shrugged it off and we went inside.
Sabina, Tom and Emma were already inside and had bought our food and everything. Almost robotically I watched the game and mimicked my friends actions; cheering when they did, booing when they did, being silent when they were. Other things occupied my mind as the game played out. It was only now that I realized after a game the clubrooms would most likely be full. I either had to not use the gun and do it subtlely or clear the clubrooms. I didn't have a knife on me and even though I could easily kill him with my bare hands I didn't want to. That left one option; somehow I had to get everyone out of the clubrooms without raising suspicion.
"Adrienne…"
Startled I looked up. As I realized James was talking to me I almost kicked myself, I was getting sloppy. Making mistakes could kill me. I had to concentrate.
"Sorry, just daydreaming." I answered, "What'd you say?"
"It's half time," he pointed out, "Do you want some more food or drinks or anything?"
I wasn't hungry but I accepted his offer anyway, asking for some chips. The worst thing you can do is not eat before a job. If you eat you aren't thinking about being hungry so can concentrate and you aren't running low on energy. If you don't eat, you lose both of them and make mistakes. In my business you can't afford to make mistakes.
Eventually the game ended. Arsenal won 2-1 and James couldn't shut up about it. Alex looked ready to knock him out, with Tom to back him up. Both Sabina and Emma didn't really care who won; they just thought it was a good game to watch.
We left the stadium, walking towards the club rooms. Emma's dad would be in there and she needed to get money from him. I wasn't complaining, as soon as we got inside and started looking for her dad I saw my opportunity. Shuffling along the wall my hand grabbed the fire alarm and flicked the switch.
A loud siren filled the building and for a moment, in the chaos that insured I thought I had made the wrong decision and lost my target. Suddenly I caught sight of the blond as terror began to fill my heart.
"Alex!" I called. He was at the back of the group that headed for the exits.
He turned and walked towards me, his hand grabbing my arm, "Come on."
I pulled out of his grasp and punched him in the head, enough to daze him. Vaguely I noticed both doors swing shut after the last people were out. I thanked my lucky stars that no one thought to check the building.
Almost shaking I pulled the gun out of my waist band, silencer already attached. Hardly hesitating I swung it up parallel to the ground. The barrel aimed directly at Alex's chest. He froze, confusion covering his features before a mask slipped into place.
"So you've worked for Scorpia all along Addy?"
I shook my head, making sure my emotions were under tight lock and key as I replied steadily, "No, I want my father back."
"So you're going to kill me?"
"It's the only way."
He didn't say anything, just looked me in the eye. Involuntarily I remembered the first time I had seen those serious blue eyes look at me. He looked so average, sitting at the back of a maths class, like any other kid, except for those eyes; far too serious and seen too much. Growling I wrenched my gaze away from those hypnotic crystal eyes, glaring at his face.
"I'm sorry, I really am," I said, avoiding saying his name, just another target.
"You won't be able to do it, Adrienne. You're not a killer, not anymore."
"You'd be surprised, Alex."
Silently I swore, I hadn't meant to say his name. Never personalize a target, they're just another number. My hands began to tremble as my eyes stung. I had to do this, had to get Yassen back. Quickly I tried to breathe deeply and get myself back under control.
Alex took a step forward. Reflexively my grip tightened and the gun pointed directly at his heart. He froze again.
"If you can do it, why haven't you done it already?"
Snake's eyes scanned the crowd. There seemed to be no one out of the ordinary, no threat of any kind. He began to think that it was a joke. There was no threat here, and anyway, what could Cub have done to piss people off, he said he hadn't been on a mission since Point Blanc.
That was when he heard it, a siren cutting through the air. Immediately his hand flew to his radio, "Wolf, you hear that?"
"It's the clubrooms fire alarm."
Snake searched the people around him harder, looking for anything that might be useful. It was only when he noticed a familiar blond head running towards the club rooms that he jumped into action.
"We need to get to the clubrooms now." Snake almost shouted over the radio before darting after the blond.
A club member grabbed Wolf's arm as he tried to enter the club rooms, "You can't go in there, the fire alarm was pulled."
Wolf glared at him, smirking as the man dropped his arm and shrunk back, "I'm a firefighter and I'm going to check the situation. Some of my buddies will be here soon and you'll let them in."
The man nodded, accepting his story. Neither knew that the exact same was happening outside the other door with a lean blond threatening the man if he didn't let go.
I glared at Alex, "Some things take time, Alex."
Somehow it got easier, calling him by his name. My breath calmed down and my hands didn't tremble. My eyes cleared up as I bottled away my emotions. This would happen whether I liked it or not.
"Well this is taking a long time, I don't reckon you've got it in you," he unwisely teased, "You're a chicken."
I smirked, "Well, shows what you know. It's time to say good bye, Alex Rider."
My finger tightened on the trigger till a low whistle rang out. Alex's face froze in silent horror, his mouth open in shock and his eyes were wide, the whites showing surrounding the pupil. Crimson blossomed over his blue shirt as he staggered backwards from the impact. I watched coldly as he collapsed, thumping onto the ground. It didn't take long for the coppery smell of blood to reach me; my nose recognized the faint smell immediately.
About to go over and check his pulse, to make sure he was dead, the doors at either end of the hall burst open. Quickly I checked who they were. Both were instantly recognizable. Wolf stood almost frozen at the main entrance. I ignored him and leapt towards the other person.
"Dad!"
Jumping into his arms I grabbed on tight, not wanting to ever let go. A whistle broke the silence. Yassen's grip around me weakened and suddenly I was supporting his full weight. Stumbling I pulled his arm over my shoulder while trying to check his pulse.
"Yassen? Yassen?! Dad!"
There was another whistle and something buried itself in my neck. Numbly I reached my hand up as I collapsed under the weight. Sounds jumbled together as everything seemed to blur before I finally gave way to the darkness.
"Sir," a tall man with his hair completely gone, leaving behind a black tattooed skull stood beside a shooting range.
'Sir' turned to face him, a fire burning fiercely in his auburn eyes, "What?" he growled.
"She did it. Shot him, and there's no way he could've survived. Both Gregorovich's were taken into custody. Should we go after them?"
The blond smirked, "No, if they ever get out we'll give them a sense of security, then go after Yassen again. The girl could be useful to eliminate our enemies."
The messenger nodded before scampering from under 'Sir's gaze.
Well there it is, sorta short I know but it was a good place to end it :) Hope you liked it, hehe
