CHAP 5 Flashbacks
My head swam as I came to. I clutched my throbbing forehead, hating the after effects of darts. Glancing around I sat up, relieved to find I wasn't back in the white cell. Instead I was in a proper bed, in a bland room with little furniture and ugly plain colours.
"You're awake."
My head whipped around to the location of the voice. Wincing, I instantly regretted the action, swaying a little. Hands shot out and steadied me as my eyes found the speaker.
"Yassen."
He smiled, "You alright, Adrienne?"
I nodded slowly and explained how I felt with one word, "Darts."
He nodded, knowing exactly what I meant.
"Alex!" I cried suddenly remembering, "Is he okay?" I swung my legs off the bed, ready to jump to my feet.
Hands grabbed me and shoved me back on the bed, "Stay," Yassen commanded, "Alex is fine, just a little bruised."
Slowly I relaxed, "That's good then. Hang on, you were there, at the clubrooms. How?"
"I escaped," he answered simply, "What happened?"
I drew a deep breath, knowing exactly what he wanted to know and started from the beginning.
Flashback
"If you ever want to see your father again, bring Alex Rider to the club rooms after the Chelsea vs. Arsenal game. If you do not do this, he will die. If you tell anyone about this, he will die. We'll be watching you."
My hand stayed frozen clutching the phone as a hang up tone filled my ear. They, they had Yassen; they had my dad, whoever they was. Slowly my hand dropped, lifelessly crashing onto the bed. I felt like I should cry but I couldn't, instead I just lay back on the bed, a plan already formulating in my mind.
Snake watched through the window silently as she lay back down on the bed, her face still twisted in horror at the mysterious phone call. He'd have to ask about that but for some reason, knew she wouldn't tell. His eyes darted to down the hall, a movement catching his eye.
The fair haired boy came to stand next to him, both their eyes locked back on the still figure as he talked, "She okay?"
"What do you think, Cub?"
"She will be. She's strong."
Snake nodded, he knew it was true but still couldn't help worrying about her. He felt like it was his duty to protect her, after all she came to him when she needed help, and he was the first one to give her a second chance. He wanted to make sure she made it through this.
"She looks scared." Alex commented.
"She had a phone call before."
"You don't know what it was about?"
Snake shook his head, "Didn't even know she had a cell phone on her."
Alex frowned, "She didn't. This section of the hospital is closed off isn't it?"
Snake nodded, "What do you mean she didn't? Then how did she get it? Only authorized personal are allowed down here."
"And there are camera's right?"
Snake nodded again, "Cub, what are you getting at?"
"She didn't have a cell phone on her so someone must've given it to her. If we can get a hold of the security footage, we'll know who."
Alex and Snake laid the evidence in front of the two heads of MI6:SO. Both of them looked at the man and boy with interest before glancing at each other.
"Can either of you read lips?" Jones asked.
They shook their heads and immediately Jones called down to the receptionist. Within five minutes another person had entered the small office.
"Good, Agent Smith, you can read lips."
"Yes, ma'am," he answered.
Blunt flicked on the TV, and pushed play, "What is she saying?"
"Hello?"
"What do you mean? Who are you? Who do you have?"
The video ended and the four people looked at Agent Smith, "Is that all?"
He nodded, "Seems that the person on the other end did most of the talking."
Blunt nodded and Smith left, knowing he wasn't need for anything else.
Blunt looked at Jones, "Put a tap on Gregorovich's phone. We'll see if this person calls back."
A desk agent burst into the head office of MI6:SO. Shocked at the outburst the two heads glared at him.
"What is it?"
"Sir, you said you wanted to be alerted when someone called Gregorovich's cell phone."
They nodded and stood up to follow him out, "I hope it's recording."
"Of course."
Sitting down beside the computer all three people put on headphones.
"You bastard! Put him back on. I want to talk to him!"
"You just did talk to him, Miss Gregorovich. Now listen very carefully unless you want him to die."
"I'm listening."
"Good. Now, there's been a change of plan."
"What?! What do you mean?"
"Keep listening and I'll tell you. Now, the game is in two weeks. We're busy at the time, you see, so many things to do. So, if you ever want to see your father again, you have to take Alex to the club rooms, and kill him. There are camera's there and we'll be watching you. If you tell anyone then he will die."
"No! I won't do it!"
"Then you will never see Yassen again."
A beeping filled the silence as the two heads of MI6:SO exchanged glances, "Contact Rider, K-Unit and Gregorovich."
It was the morning after the dance. My cell phone ringing broke me out of my dreams. Scrambling I found it on the floor and answered it, surprised to hear Jones asking me to come to MI6, something about Jake. Groaning as the phone call ended I hurriedly got changed and caught a taxi to the Royal and General. I had packed a bag for the game before I left, knowing I'd need to hurry.
Mrs. Jones was already in the foyer when I arrived, "Oh good, Adrienne, you're here."
Slightly confused I followed her upstairs. My shock increased when I walked into the office to see Blunt, Alex and K-Unit. Jones closed the door behind me, involuntarily I jumped.
"Good, you're all here," Blunt said, almost talking to himself before looking at me, "Anything you'd care to share?"
I shook my head and answered simply, sounding as though I was telling the truth, "No."
He didn't reply, merely reached over and hit the play button on a stereo. Horror filled me as my voice filled the air, angry and defeated. I froze when it got to the worst part where I didn't say a thing.
"Keep listening and I'll tell you. Now, the game is in two weeks. We're busy at the time, you see, so many things to do. So, if you ever want to see your father again, you have to take Alex to the club rooms, and shoot him. There are camera's there and we'll be watching you. If you tell anyone then he will die."
I grimaced as they all turned to me. My eyes found something on the floor very interesting at that moment.
Alex's quiet voice drew my eyes up to his face, he didn't sound angry, but his voice was dangerously low, "Why didn't you tell me?"
"Didn't you hear it?" I growled, "If I told anyone, Yassen would die. I wasn't going to take that risk!"
"So you were going to kill me instead?!"
"I didn't know what I was going to do!" I cried.
Blunt cleared his throat and we both turned back to him, glaring fiercely.
"We've figured out a plan for this," he said simply before looking at Jones.
She carried on, "Of course, you'll pretend as if this meeting never happened. Adrienne, I assume you've already got a gun?"
I nodded.
"Good. Alex, Smithers has recently designed a t-shirt that is bullet proof, if you go downstairs after this he should have a Chelsea one for you. We'll be playing this the same as we did with your father Alex."
Alex nodded, hardly showing his anxiety.
"And K-Unit, you'll be at the game looking out for any potential threats because of a letter we received threatening Alex."
"Yes, ma'am."
Jones nodded and they went over the plan once more before we were dismissed, with K-Unit remaining behind for something.
After apologizing to Alex we went different ways; him to see Smithers and me to go home and prepare for the game.
In case I was being watched at the game when I ran into Snake I almost panicked. I was about to 'kill' an MI6 agent and there were SAS here. In the clubrooms I couldn't see any cameras but acted as though I didn't want to kill Alex, knowing there would be tiny cameras somewhere.
When I shot Alex a crimson liquid spurted from his top. On a camera it would look like his blood but only on closer examination would you realize it wasn't. The t-shirt didn't stop the impact of the bullet so the force knocked him backwards and broke a couple of ribs. Hitting close to his previous bullet wound was enough to knock him out but not cause any real damage.
After K-Unit had knocked Yassen and I out they would place Alex in a body bag with miniscule breathing holes. When the ambulance came Wolf wheeled him out on a stretcher saying someone had died from a heart attack. When people asked about the blood the excuse would be a nose bleed. K-Unit grabbed Yassen and I and took us out after 'fainting'. Loading us all into two ambulances we made our way back to The Royal and General and that's where we woke up.
