Disclaimer: Hello, hello! I hope you guys get the message by now, I have not stolen Veronica Roth's identity yet, and I don't ever intend to (at least at this point in time, heh heh heh), so I will probably never own the Divergent Trilogy.

A/N: Top priority news, I got my first review on this story! Keep in mind, if anyone else decides to review, I'll answer you directly if you have an account, and in the author's note if you are a guest. This was a guest, sooo... (beware, it's long!)

Thank you for your review! It really makes my day to read comments like yours, because it lets me know that someone is reading the work I put so much time into.
As for the perspectives, I plan to keep this story consistent, by staying in Cammi's perspective (by the way, it's Cammi without an e, not a conventional spelling, I know), but maybe, after I finish the story, I can publish additional chapters with Tobias' perspective. I have so many ideas for this story, and that was certainly one of them, because I really enjoy exploring different perspectives.
As for the characters dying... well, Allegiant broke my heart too, but, ultimately, I understood the ending. As much as I have come to love these characters, during my time growing and developing them, this story will include the war. And, in war, people die. It's a brutal reality. So I can't promise that everyone will survive through the four books that I currently have planned (if I get that far, hopefully I will), but, if it makes you feel any better, I am not mirroring the Divergent Trilogy. Just a hint, I plan to spin off from the original series sometime in the middle of Insurgent. I love Divergent, but I feel like it will be a better test of my writing skills to come up with a different plot. I'll address that more when it actually comes along.
Finally, the "drama". I have plenty of plans for Four and Cammi in the future. In the beginning, though, it will mostly be lighthearted, because, remember, nobody has a reason to hate Cammi yet, apart from the fact that she is Abnegation. But there will be showdowns, there will be fears, and Tobias and Camilla will have to stand by each other a lot as the story progresses.
Once again, thank you for your kind words! I hope that my story will continue to be enjoyable enough for you to read. :)

Now that that long review response is over, I hope you guys are ready for chapter 8! This one actually has a bunch of small segments; gun training, lunch, fight training, shopping, and Chasm meeting #2. Enjoy!

"The first thing you will learn today is how to shoot a gun." My brother stands at the front of the room, giving a speech. "The second thing you will learn is how to win a fight." Tobias places a gun on my palm, giving me the quickest of glances before he moves on. "Since you are here, I know I won't have to teach you how to get on and off a moving train, thank goodness for that."

I stifle a yawn. I don't think many of the initiates got a lot of sleep, seeing as we were awoken by a wooden spoon hitting a metal cooking pot at 7 o'clock in the morning, but I got even less, due to my little night meet-up with Tobias. Add in my nightmares, which come almost daily, and the amount of quality sleep I get drops to zero. I don't know how Tobias manages to look so fresh and alert right now.

"Initiation is divided into three stages. We will measure your progress and rank you according to your performance in each stage. The stages are not weighed equally in determining your final rank, so it is possible, though difficult, to drastically improve your rank over time."

Translation, even if I come in dead last out of the people who remain, just ahead of the transfers who will be cut at the end of stage 1, I can still get a decent spot in the final ranks. That thought is reassuring, but only slightly.

"We believe that preparation eradicates cowardice, which we define as the failure to act in the midst of fear. Therefore each stage of initiation is intended to prepare you in a different way." Tobias continues. "The first stage is primarily physical; the second, primarily emotional; the third, primarily mental."

Tobias walks over to the target. Out of the corner of my eye, I can see Zayden grinning in anticipation. "The purpose of this exercise is to make sure you're prepared to defend yourself and your city against enemies. You may need this information later in stage one. So, watch me."

He turns to the target, and lifts the gun up in front of him. The target is just a plank of plywood with three red and white circles painted on it, one for each of us. I watch his stance carefully. His feet are about shoulder width apart, and he holds the gun with both hands. And then, he fires. The noise is deafening. The bullet goes through the perfect center.

I face my own target, and lift my gun. It's heavier than I thought, and the feeling of the cold metal against my skin makes me shiver slightly. Once I've fixed my stance, I take a second to watch Lavender, who's beside me, shoot. She pulls the trigger, and the gun flies upward, nearly smacking her in the nose. She stumbles backwards, nearly falling down. I bite down a laugh.

If firing a gun made Lavender, who has at least ten pounds on me, almost fall, then there's more recoil than I thought. I'll have to anticipate it better than she did.

I look back towards my own target, my gun still up in front of me. I steady myself, breathe out, and squeeze the trigger.

Bang. The sound of the gun firing rings in my ears for a second. I look at my target eagerly, and notice a small semi-circle cut out of the target at the top. I smirk. I hit it on the first shot.

I glance at the other initiates. Nobody seems to have noticed my small victory, except for Tobias, Lavender and Dante. Tobias gives me a small thumbs-up before heading off to work with the shorter Erudite girl. Dante pokes Zayden in the shoulder and points. Zayden looks at my target, frowns, and sends me a short glare. In return, I smile sweetly.

"How did you do that?" Lavender questions.

I shrug. "Beginner's luck, I guess."

I lift the gun again. Since I hit the top last time, I guess I have to aim lower and keep myself more firmly rooted. I fix myself and fire again.

Bang. The second bullet pierces the outermost circle.

I'm a little more comfortable with the stance and the noise now, so I do it again.

Bang. Bang.

The next two bullets are even better. One straddles the edge between the outermost circle and the middle circle, and the other is neatly in the middle circle.

Bang.

This one hits the middle circle again, although it's extremely close to the center circle.

By this time, I notice that the room has fallen silent. Most of the initiates have stopped shooting, and are watching me, even Zayden, although he's scowling. I spare a glance at my friends. Ethan and Lavender have their jaws dropped.

I catch Tobias' eye momentarily. He nods, just slightly, for me to go on. And, I might be imagining it, but I think he has a hint of pride in his eyes.

As amazing as my shooting skills are to the other transfers, I'm a little frustrated. Why can't I hit the center?

I take a deep breath, and close my eyes for a second. When I open them again, I don't see a plywood target. I see Marcus, standing there, sneering at me, belt in hand.

"You worthless piece of shit!"

"Get down here, you good-for-nothing daughter!"

"Shirt off, Camilla."

I'm done. I transferred to Dauntless so I could be free of him.

Bang.

The bullet hit him right in the heart.

For a few seconds, everyone just sits there and gapes at me, while I stare at the hole right through the center of my target, where Marcus was standing not ten seconds ago.

Finally, Tobias breaks the awkward silence. "Six shots, Cammi. That's not bad, amazing actually, and by a Stiff too."

I cringe at the nickname. While I know that he's only saying it to keep up our cover, it still hurts.

"What's the lowest number of shots it has taken someone to hit the center?" Lavender asks, patting my shoulder gently as congratulations.

"The record was set last year, in fact." Tobias says, looking at Lavender for a second before turning back to me. "The record is four."

I lock eyes with him, and I can tell, just by the faint smirk on his lips, that he was the one who set that record.

I grin, and face the target once again.

Marcus is standing there again, belt and all, with a sneer plastered on his face. But he doesn't have a hold over me anymore, at least not physically. I'm not sure if I'll ever escape the mental hold. But, as of right now, that's good enough for me.

Bang.

I walk into the dining hall, massaging my sore arms. Gun training is over, and by now, everyone has managed to at least hit the target. The ones who have hit the center include Zayden, Lavender (which, needless to say, she was super excited about), the Erudite boy, the taller Erudite girl, and me, of course.

Lavender and Ethan join me in the lunch line, and we head to the table we occupied yesterday at dinner time, our trays in hand. Tobias isn't here today, he's sitting with his friends at a different table. But we all stop in surprise as we see who is there. Sitting there, quietly munching on a sandwich, is the taller Erudite girl. She has black hair that's tied neatly in a braid. She looks up at us. We are standing next to the table hesitantly. She swallows her bite, and smiles.

"Hey! Do you mind if I sit here? I would sit with Aiden and Sadie-" she points to the two other Erudite transfers, who are sitting to the side, by themselves, laughing at something, "But they've been getting closer these past few months and they'll probably be a couple soon. And I just don't want to get between them or feel like a third wheel, you know?" She smiles hopefully at us.

Ethan groans dramatically. "I was already stuck sitting with a duo of crazy girls, now I have to sit with three?"

Lavender and I both elbow him in the ribs at the same time.

"Owwww!" He whines.

"Shut up, Ethan." I snicker at him.

Lavender hasn't looked back at us. She nods enthusiastically. "Don't mind him, you know how Candors are. Of course you can sit with us! I mean, the more the merrier, right?"

The girl laughs. "I guess so. My name is Julia." She holds out a hand for us to shake.

"Lavender." Lavender accepts her hand with ease. Sometimes I wonder what it would have been like to grow up in Amity, where you would know the customs of other factions well enough to interact with them. Maybe then I wouldn't have so much trouble with shaking hands.

"I'm Ethan." Ethan plops down, oblivious to Julia's hand. He picks up his sandwich and bites into it viciously.

"He's the annoying one." I roll my eyes. I can't resist throwing a jab at one of my new friends. "I'm Cammi."

Julia studies me closely. "I think I recognize you. You're the daughter of-"

My eyes widen. Please don't say his name, please don't say his name, please-

"-one of the council members, right? I don't remember which one." I internally sigh with relief.

"Um, yeah. How did you know?"

Julia shrugs. "My parents wanted me to be the leader of Erudite, so sometimes they would force me to go to important meetings and stuff. Those were usually in Abnegation. And I saw you around the section where the council members usually live."

"How did your parents make that happen?" I ask, curious. "I mean, surely Jeanine doesn't allow a bunch of random Erudite kids to accompany her-"

"Oh, I wasn't just a random Erudite kid. Jeanine's my aunt."

I raise my eyebrows in surprise. I did not see that coming. Ethan and Lavender aren't paying attention to us. They're talking about food, I think. "So you're Julia Matthews?"

She shakes her head quickly and makes a face. "No, my last name is Hampton. Julia Hampton. Jeanine's my mom's sister. My mom is married, of course."

"Oh. Sorry." I feel the tips of my ears getting hot.

"No, it's fine. I'm glad you cleared that up, actually. I hate being associated with my aunt."

I look into her eyes for any trace of dishonesty. I see none. "Why?"

Julia grimaces and looks down. "I want people to judge me by who I am, not who I'm related to. I want to be Julia, Dauntless ambassador, or something, not Julia, Jeanine's niece. I guess that's part of the reason I transferred to Dauntless. I don't always want to live under Jeanine's shadow."

"What's the other reason?" I hope I'm not prying too much. I know I wouldn't want Julia to ask me the same.

"Well, there are a few, actually. For one, I kind of wanted some freedom. In Erudite, we have freedom of information, but I wanted freedom of action. Also," Julia's volume drops, and I lean in to hear her better. "I probably shouldn't be saying this, but I don't like how Jeanine runs Erudite. I don't know, it just seems more, how do I describe it, hungry, than before."

I scan Julia's sparkling coffee-colored eyes, again, for even the slightest hint of regret, remorse, insincerity, anything. But I don't see it. This is truly how Julia feels about her former faction. She doesn't like it to the point where she is fine with insulting it to a stranger. But something in my gut tells me that she chose to confide in me. Why, I have no clue. But I push down the feeling for now.

"So." I tune back into reality as Julia starts talking again. "What about you? Why did you transfer?"

I knew it. I knew I shouldn't have pried for information about her past. Now, she has every right to do the same with me. "Um, I guess for the same reason you did. To be free. Abnegation was very plain. Very repetitive."

"Not to mention the food!" Lavender cuts in on our conversation, making a face. "Once, we had to eat meals that were prepared in the styles of other factions, a different faction a day. Sorry Cammi, but I liked your faction's food the least. It was just so… bland."

"Yep." I say, rolling my eyes. I silently thank Lavender for the save. "The food was another reason altogether."

After lunch, Tobias takes us to a new room, which has black punching bags in it. We were each assigned a punching bag, and Tobias shows us different punches and kicks. Apparently we were working on technique today, and tomorrow would mark the start of the fights.

Next, it's our turn. I start cautiously, my fists barely making contact with the bag. But as I gain more confidence, I punch harder and harder, and my bag starts swaying. The moves start feeling natural, like I'd grown up doing them. Maybe that's because I had grown up with them, except they were directed at me, instead of by me.

After his demonstration, Tobias walks around, giving us individual tips. When he gets to me, he just watches me for a while, analyzing me. Then he steps forward. "You'll do better in fights if you use your elbows and knees, at least until you gain more muscle." He grabs my elbows gently and moves them slightly, so my stance is a little different than before. "Your stance was amazing, but if you tuck your elbows in a bit, like this, then you'll have an easier time protecting your ribcage."

I try punching with the new stance. It's a bit strange, but after I got used to it, I found that it was more comfortable than my earlier stance. I smile at Tobias. "Thank you To-Four."

He gives me a small half-smile. "No problem. Your tall stature will give you an advantage in fights, but be careful not to let opponents who are shorter than you get too close. Your biggest advantage is your reach, and the minute a shorter opponent gets too close, it's rendered useless."

With that, he walks off to the next initiate, and I keep punching.

Dinner comes and goes before I know it. Now, we can do anything we want until we go to bed. So when Lavender suggests shopping, I shrug and go along. Julia, at Lavender's request, comes along as well, even though she doesn't look happy about it.

We walk into the clothing place, and split up to go look around. I walk through the aisles, looking at the clothes. Most of them expose more skin than I'm used to, and it's a little uncomfortable.

Let go of it, Camilla. I shake my head at myself. I'm Dauntless now. I shouldn't mind that my clothes will expose my skin. I continue strolling through the store until I finally find an outfit that catches my eye. It's a black long-sleeved shirt that is open along the top, exposing my shoulders and collarbone, but nothing else. It has dark red trim along the hem of the shirt and the ends of the sleeves. The pants will probably stick to my legs, but they still look comfortable, and have two good-sized pockets.

I take them, try them on, and proceed to stare at myself in the mirror. This beautiful, dark-haired, green-eyed girl can't be me. This girl's hair is loose, tumbling down her shoulders in a carefree way. She's wearing a loose black shirt and tight black pants. Camilla wouldn't be wearing this.

But Cammi would. I remind myself.

I decide to keep the shirt and pants, as well as a few other outfits I picked out. I keep the shirt and pants on, because I really like them.

Lavender walks up to me, looks at my outfit, and smiles. "That looks really good on you, Cammi." She holds up a tube and offers it to me. She must see the confused look I'm throwing at her, because she says, "Lipstick. It's makeup."

I shake my head. I'm already struggling to process the difference between Abnegation and Dauntless clothes, I don't need to deal with makeup as well. Lavender smiles at me again and pockets the lipstick. "It's okay. Whenever you're ready, just ask."

I smile thankfully at Lavender. "Are you finished?"

"Yup." She replies. "Let's go find Julia, then we can get out of here."

I link arms with Lavender and walk to the counter to make our purchases. All while wondering how I got lucky enough to have her as my friend.

I speed-walk to the Chasm, eager to talk to Tobias. I have a few things I would like to question him about.

I pick my way down the path that leads to our secret spot above the water. As I approach, I see a shadow already sitting there. A shadow shaped like my brother.

"Toby!"

At my voice, he turns around, a grin making its way onto his face. "Cam!"

He holds his arms out, and I walk into them without hesitation. He pulls me close, careful to avoid my still-healing back. After a few seconds, he pulls away, and I sit down beside him.

"What are you wearing?" Tobias takes in the outfit I bought earlier today, managing a crooked grin.

"I bought it after dinner. Do you like it?" I strike a pose, and Tobias laughs at my antics.

"It's definitely Dauntless, although not as much as some of the outfits I've seen other Dauntless girls wear."

I chuckle at that, not wanting to imagine what type of outfits he's seen. "I'm still Abnegation at heart, Tobias. It's going to take years and then some for me to even consider putting on those kinds of outfits."

"I'm glad. Can't have some Dauntless guy messing with my younger sister."

I roll my eyes. "If what I hear about you is true, then nobody will dare mess with me after initiation."

"Oh? And what have you heard about me, exactly?" Tobias is wearing an amused expression on his face.

"Well," I start, remembering how I had subtly grilled my friends for information on my brother, the apparent Dauntless prodigy, at dinner. "You're a Dauntless prodigy, obviously. You're one of the best fighters in Dauntless, you hit the center of the target in four rounds, you had what is considered the bloodiest initiation fight in history, and you have only four fears, hence the name."

Tobias chuckles. "That's about it." He shrugs. "Everyone makes a big deal of it."

I stare at my brother. "Tobias, it is a big deal. How are you sitting here telling me of the multiple records you broke during initiation so casually?"

"I guess I don't like the attention." Tobias looks uncomfortable by now, so I change the subject.

"I learned all of that from my friends. What do you think of them?"

Tobias tilts his head slightly. "You hang out with the Amity, the nice Candor, and the Erudite girl, Jessica or Juliet or something, right?"

"Their names are Lavender, Ethan, and Julia." I say firmly. "Do you even know the names of your initiates?"
Tobias shrugs again. "I learned quickly that this year, there are going to be people who don't make it. If I learn their names, I'm afraid that I'll learn too much about them and find it hard to let them go when they leave."

I nod. That logic seems reasonable, but I wish that he didn't have to apply it. "You said this year. Does that mean nobody was cut last year?"

"Yeah. The people at the bottom got shitty jobs, but nobody was cut. Eric helped change that when he became leader." At the mention of Eric, Tobias' face darkens.

"You guys are like rivals, right?"

"I guess you could say that. Eric just loved to pick on everyone, still does. And I hate him for it." Tobias sounds rushed, like he doesn't want to talk about it anymore. "But back to your friends. Lavender seems nice, but that's typical for the Amity. She's probably going to struggle in initiation, though. Ethan, well, he keeps his mouth shut remarkably well for a Candor, and-" Tobias smirks. "Anyone who looks closely enough at him can tell he totally likes Lavender. He keeps staring at her."

I laugh along with my brother. I'd assumed that on the train, when his eyes lingered on my Amity friend, but hearing it from my brother, who, from what I'd gathered the night before, was a total imbecile at romance, made it a thousand times funnier. Not that I was any better.

"What about Julia?" I question. She's the one I'm most curious about.

"Julia is a mixed book. She's nice enough, but seems very withdrawn, almost like the Abnegation. But she's obviously very smart, and she seems brave as well. She might just be a shy Dauntless, but I wouldn't be surprised if she were a you-know-what."

He glances around as he says that, and I find myself looking around too. If anyone heard this conversation, we'd both be in very hot water.

"Did you know that Julia is Jeanine's niece?" I blurt out.

Tobias furrows his eyebrows. "Really?" he hesitates, as if he doesn't want to say something, but finally continues. "Be careful around her, then."

"Why?" I ask, surprised.

Tobias sighs. "I shouldn't be telling you this, but I think Erudite has infiltrated Dauntless with spies. You know Eric? I think he's one of them."

I intake a breath. "What are Erudite trying to do?"

"I believe that Erudite are trying to fill up important positions in Dauntless with Erudite lackeys. They already have a leader, and maybe several others I don't know about."

"So you think Julia…" I trail off, piecing together what he is indicating.

"Think about it, Cam. Julia has close ties to Jeanine Matthews. Blood ties, actually. And that makes her a good candidate for a spy. I'm not saying she is one, I'm just saying she could be. Just be cautious around her."

"I talked to Julia at lunch today. She didn't seem to like her aunt very much. She said that she transferred because she didn't want to always live under her aunt's shadow and she didn't like the way Jeanine ran Erudite. From what I could tell, she wasn't lying."

Tobias' eyebrows are still furrowed, and he looks deep in thought.

"I'll be careful." I lean my head on Tobias' shoulder. He wraps an arm around me, and we both stare into the rushing water of the Chasm.

The silence engulfs us for a few minutes, before I break it again. "What if I don't pass initiation?"

The thought has been circulating in the back of my mind all day, but with gun training and fight training and eating and talking with my friends and shopping, I haven't allowed myself to think about it.

"You will."

"Tobias, think about it. I'm the only Abnegation transfer. Abnegation is as far from Dauntless as you can get. I might be slightly taller than average, but what good is that when I face off against some football of an initiate in the ring?"

Tobias removes his arm from around my waist. For a second, I wonder if he is disappointed in me, if he's realizing the truth. But that thought disappears when he places his hands on my shoulders and turns me to face him.

"Don't sell yourself short, Cam. You may be a tall, skinny Abnegation transfer, but you are the most stubborn, determined person I know. And you've endured more in sixteen years than many people will in their whole lives. You'll make it through the physical section easily. And the mental section will be a breeze."

I smile and hug Tobias. I still have my doubts, but Tobias' words remind me of my vow, when I first heard about the cuts.

I feel Tobias lean down, and then I hear his voice in my ear. "And if you do fail initiation - which won't happen, by the way - then I'll come with you."

"To the factionless?" I pull my head out of his chest and look up at him in surprise. He nods.

"That's not fair to you. You more than earned your spot in Dauntless. You can't give it all up because your sister wasn't strong enough for Dauntless." I protest.

He continues staring me in the eyes as he says, "You matter more to me than my place among the Dauntless. If it comes down to it, I'll gladly become factionless with you."

I smile, wider than before, and peck Tobias' cheek. He turns a light shade of pink, but doesn't move his arms, which are still wrapped around me.

How did I get lucky enough to have Tobias as a brother?

A/N: And that's a wrap!
Next chapter, the fights will begin... and, with eight initiates, nobody gets a break. Will Cammi get beaten up or do the beating?
Nobody knows... well, except for me. I HAVE THE POWER!... I'm done being dramatic now.
See you the next time school frees me from its clutches!
