Ash sat alone back in the clearing as he thought of the mysterious pokémon that showed itself while at the breeders. After the creature disappeared Ash had asked Burt what the pokémon was, and from the way the old mans' face fell he wasn't sure the question had been a good one to ask.
"That pokémon was my little girls' best friend," Burt confessed as he took off his hat and scratched his head, "After my little flower passed away that Doublade stuck around the place. I don't know what it wants since it doesn't let me near it, but I've seen it lingering along clearings tree line. That clearing is where little Rose and Doublade played. I'm sure its' just waiting for her to come play. I've tried telling it that Rose is gone, but it vanishes before the words come out of my mouth."
The little girl, Rose, if he remembered correctly had already been gone for so long. For Doublade to still be around the clearing they played in showed him that their bond was strong and was something to be envied. He hoped to reach a bond with his pokémon like that one day.
Letting out a heavy sigh Ash looked over at the pokémon in the clearing. None of the ghosts from the day before were in the area while the others he had seen before were. Except for the Doublade. He had to be honest. He ended up looking up what exactly a Doublade was after being told what kind of pokémon it was. He didn't find much, but it was enough to intrigue him.
According to the multitude of studies he had read when a Honedge, its initial form, evolves into a Doublade the 'spirit' of the blades split to form the two blades its evolution shows. The two blades are able to speak telepathically with each other and it's because of that ability to do so Doublade becomes a rather formidable opponent. The sounds the creature makes is enough to unsettle an opponent or even make it flee in terror to the weaker minded and hearted.
On top of the unstoppable, masterful, sword play Doublade has a rather tough defense to get through. When evolved, with a dusk stone of all things, the twin blades form into one large blade and its plaque and sheathes become its shield. When evolved, Aegislash is capable of harnessing its spectral powers almost to a mastered state. It can manipulate humans and pokémon to a point of them doing its bidding, but it won't turn on its 'master' as long as the 'master' is worthy of its protection. Ash had also seen rumors that when an Aegislash, or its previous evolutions, attach to a human they were bound for greatness.
Ash though, he had no visions or dreams of being the greatest of anything. He only hoped to be the best he can be for himself and his pokémon and to help his loved ones fulfill their own dreams.
It also seemed like the Doublade he had seen was a shiny.
It only made Ash a little more curious to get to know it.
His attention was caught by Pikachu who decided to run into the tree line to follow something or another. Letting out a sigh he got up and began to follow his mouse. He knew that Pikachu would come back when he called him, and he trusted his pokémon to not get in trouble, but he was curious as to what got Pikachus' attention.
He managed to keep up with Pikachu even though he only got a few glimpses of his yellow fur through the greenness of the scenery around them. He didn't know how long he followed his mouse, but by the time he caught up to Pikachu they were in another clearing. It was larger than the other clearing and covered in tons of flowers of every color one could think of. The space was devoid of other pokémon besides the one he saw yesterday.
The sun glinted off its steel body as it floated in the middle of the clearing. Ash kept walking until he was beside his Pikachu where he stopped and kept his eyes on Doublade. The twin swords clanged together and Ash did his best not to flinch at the grating sound.
He felt as though he was being tested and when Doublade saw he didn't react to the sound it stopped and settled in the air. The two eyes on the blades gleamed before it let out another call, and that was when Ash understood what Doublade wanted.
He nodded and stepped back a bit before calling out to Pikachu, "To battle!"
The playful mouse instantly changed from his carefree observant stance to a tense one as he waited for his trainer to give him a command. Pikachus' cheek pouches had already begun to spark with electricity as the mouse began to gather the electricity for him to use. Ash narrowed his eyes as he studied the Doublade and when he saw the creature not moving he gave his companion his command.
"Pikachu, keep away from its hits with Agility. Use Thunderbolt and Electro Ball when you can. Defend with Iron Tail when you need to."
Pikachu let out a small growl letting Ash know he had understood the command before rushing towards the twin swords in a Quick Attack. Ash could see flickers of electricity glancing off Pikachus' fur as he watched the mouse and Doublade battle.
He was entranced. The battle seemed more like a dance than an actual battle as sparks flew when steel blade met steel tail. The ground around the two began to gather gouges and burns as moves were deflected and bodies were thrown to the ground. As much as Pikachu gave, Doublade gave right back just as hard. Ash was honestly getting concerned as he saw how tired Pikachu was getting, but then he saw the damage his starter was giving Doublade and it made him feel hope that Pikachu would come out of this victorious.
Ash winced as Doublade lashed out suddenly as one blade deflected Pikachus' tail and the other slashed the electric types' side making Pikachu cry out. Ash opened his mouth to call the battle off so he could tend to Pikachu when his little mouse let out a sudden and highly charged bout of electricity making the Doublade cry out and fall to the ground.
Pikachu had managed to land on his feet next to the Doublade. Electricity sparked over Doublades' body making it wince since the electricity made it paralyzed. Ash watched as Pikachu placed a small paw on the Doublade and declared his victory before falling down beside the twin blades.
Ash smiled as he walked over to the two and knelt beside the two. They were awake and looking at him as Ash dug through his bag to get his restoratives out to heal them. He healed Pikachu first and gave him an Oran berry snack to eat as he tended to the twin blades.
"Good battle," Ash said as the twin blades began to float once again.
The blades' eyes gleaming once more made a move almost like a bow in his direction before giving Pikachu a bow as well. The blades sheathed themselves back into their sheathes as if to rest, but instead of leaving, like Ash had assumed they would do, it floated over towards his bag.
Ash stayed silent and watched the Doublade to see what it would do. He was surprised when he saw its ribbon curl around a pokéball before floating towards him. He held out his hand as its ribbon holding the ball stretched out towards him and he glanced down at the ball for a moment in surprise before looking up at the Doublade.
Its ribbons fluttered for a moment before stilling itself to wait for Ashs' next move.
"You want me to catch you?" Ash asked as he looked at the creature, "What about your home here?"
The Doublade shook a bit before wrapping a ribbon around his wrist to his free hand only to bring it up towards its sheathes. Ashs' eyes widened as a memory popped up in his head. It wasn't one of his own memories.
It was Doublades' memory.
The image of a little girl, a familiar girl that he had seen pictures of before, and the Doublade started the memory. They were in the clearing he was in now with his Pikachu and the Doublade. The little girl was standing where Doublade had been before it fought Pikachu and when she turned around there was only a small sad smile on her face.
She had dark hair cut into a bob and her eyes, filled with sadness and love, were similar to his own in color, but without the red tint his eyes had. Her summer dress fluttered in the wind that caused the flowers around her feet to dance.
"Doublade," Rose said as she clasped her hands behind her back, "I know I'm not long for this world. I've known it for a while now. I overheard Daddy talking with the doctors about how they can't find a donor for my heart in time."
She sent Doublade another small smile as her eyes teared up a bit. "I want you to know I love you. I hope that after I'm gone that you'll find a trainer that will help you fulfill your dreams just like I had promised. I'm sorry I can't help you any longer," She said softly as the tears fell down her cheeks like little rivers of crystals, "I don't want you to stay here and fade away. You're meant for a life filled with love, battles, and family. So promise me, Doublade, find a trainer that'll take care of you and love you like I have!"
Little Rose wiped her cheeks before bringing Doublade close in a hug.
"I love you Doublade."
Ash let out a small gasp as Doublade let go of his wrist. He let his hand fall into his lap as he felt hot streaks of tears fall down his own cheek in a mimicry of Roses' tears. "I understand," Ash said softly as he nodded and gave the Doublade a genuine smile that was filled with understanding and a bit of sadness as he lifted the hand with the ball.
Doublade let out a soft sound as it tilted slightly and tapped the button with one of the handles of its sword only to get sucked in. Ash held the ball loosely as it twitched before stilling in a successful capture.
"Welcome to our little family, Doublade," Ash whispered as he held the ball close.
The small ball twitched slightly as if Doublade was thanking him before it fell still once more.
"Ready!?"
Ash looked up from where he was reading on the couch to see Alain standing in the doorway. Pikachu was laying beside him curled up in a ball, asleep and ignoring the world around its electrified fur. "For what?" Ash asked as he sat up. He was only teasing of course. He knew what Alain wanted.
"The Charizard battle you promised me!" the older man almost whined out as he saw how slow the teen was moving. It had been a couple of days after he had captured Doublade and had to explain to Burt what had occurred between him and Doublade as well as the memory he had seen from Doublade. The older man was sad to see Doublade, one of the last connections he had to his daughter, leave, but he understood and wished them the best in their adventure before Ash left the sanctuary.
"Alright, alright," Ash said as he let out a small chuckle, "It might be best to do it outside. My Charizard has only been a Charizard for a few days and is still unsure of how to use his wings or land safely. I wouldn't want him to accidentally crash into something that shouldn't be destroyed."
"We can use the clearing behind the lab," Alain said as he rushed to the doors in the back. Ash followed at a much slower pace after grabbing his bag and securing his belt that had all of his pokéballs. He had to hold in his laughter as he saw Alain getting antsy be the door.
Their trek across the yard once they had left the house garnered the attention of both pokémon and humans alike as Alain acted like a little boy getting a new toy to play with. Ash didn't care for the others that followed them to see what they were up to. He just wanted to fight Alains' Charizard, and he was sure his own Charizard would appreciate a battle with another of its kind.
"Here we are!"
Ash stopped as the words pierced his thoughts and saw that they had indeed reached the clearing behind the Lab.
"I'm ready when you are!" Alain said from across the clearing. The man already had his pokéball in hand and was about to throw it as Ash reached for his own Charizards' ball. Ash nodded and threw his ball as Alains' Charizard appeared. Bright orange scales shone brighter in the sunlight, but it paled in comparison when the sunlight hit his baby. Ash could barely look at his own Charizard as the light bounced off his white scales.
Alains' Charizard let out a roar as he saw the other creature and Ash noted a distinct difference in their roars when his baby let out his own roar. While Alains' Charizards' roar like another of his kind, his own Charizards' roar was more guttural like a true dragons' roar. It filled Ash with pride as he saw the older Charizard send his baby looks of what looked like respect and it was as if the roar his baby let out landed him up higher in the hierarchy of the two.
"Oh. My. Arceus." Alain said as he looked at the albino. Ash smiled at his reaction while the others that had gathered to see what they were up too began to murmur. "How?!" Alain asked as he looked between the two.
Ash chuckled as he explained what Bill had told him the day he had acquired Charmander from him. Ash heard the odd scientist or two scrambling for paper as he explained how his baby was albino. "Honestly Bill can explain this all better," Ash said as his baby whipped his tail in irritation, "He's getting a bit antsy to fight."
"Got it!" Alain said as he smiled wider, "Charizard you know what to do!" The large orange beast roared again before letting out a stream of fire a shade lighter than the flame his baby produces.
Ash watched as the two lizards fought on the ground for a few moments before taking to the air. He could already see that the larger orange Charizard was a much better flyer than his own Charizard, but then again his own baby had only been a Charizard for a few days and this was his first aerial battle.
He knew this was a battle Charizard wouldn't win.
The two trainers called attack after attack to their pokémon in hopes the two could hear them, but they were so high up they only got a few of the commands here and there. The battle finally came to an end around ten minutes later when his baby landed with a loud groan then promptly collapsed while the orange Charizard landed gracefully without even panting.
Ash approached his baby who had looked up at him with a look of upset on his face that Ash had to try not to laugh at because honestly the look was adorable. He rubbed his horn softly as he appraised his fight and praised his good points before telling him that he still had a long way to go in aerial fights. It only served to make his baby a bit grumpy, but Ash knew he took the words to heart and would work hard until he was able to best the other Charizard before them.
He got Charizard to his feet as the other two approached them with a wide smile on Alain's face and a cocky look on the large orange Charizard. But before Ash or Alain could say anything a familiar male voice cut in.
"Most fantastique!" Sycamore said as he clapped his hands. His eyes were wide and his smile even more so as he approached the four. Ash watched helplessly as the professor started to ramble in French, as he had learned that French was the language spoken here.
Ash looked over at his Charizard and let out a sigh as he saw the same confused look on the white lizard that he was sure he was sporting on his own face. With a promise to give him some well deserved treats later Ash returned his baby to his ball before placing it in his belt.
"So, Ash!" Sycamore said as he turned to the boy, "on the matter of what you had brought up yesterday about the curious little ball you have in your possession! May I have a look at it in my lab?"
Ash nodded and followed the enthusiastic professor inside the building to the elevator he hadn't seen the few times he had been in the building. He supposed with how large the building was an elevator was better than stairs. "If you don't know I have been conducting my research in what is call Mega Evolution," Sycamore began as the elevator opened to the mans' personal lab, "I have discovered, with Alains' help, that certain pokémon have a gene within their DNA to let them Mega Evolve. A step past their last evolution if you will. Unfortunately we have also discovered to do so a pokémon needs three things."
Ash was led over to a glass container that held what looked like a broken piece of a stone wall. The piece was a light brown in color like sand, but it showed its age with how smooth the piece was around the edges it had broken off its main piece of wall. Ash could see faded etchings on the stone depicting a Charizard much like his own and Alains' as well as two other vastly different shaped Charizard and a human.
"As you can see its from these etchings an explorer had found a couple of years ago that started my search for mega evolution," the professor said as he began telling Ash what he could make of the etchings, "As far as I can tell this stone tells us that for mega evolution to happen a pokémon needs their particular stone that holds the extra power and DNA to unlock their own DNA to evolve. They also need what we have started calling a Key Stone and they also need a bond. A bond so strong that with the extra power it takes to evolve beyond what is supposed to happen they still have an anchor to this world and won't rampage."
Ash nodded as he listened to the explanation. "Have you actually accomplished a Mega Evolution?" Ash asked as he looked up from the stone to see Sycamore looking at him while Alain had moved to the computers behind the man.
"We haven't no," Alain pipped up, "But we have seen a video. It's old and grainy, but it is the best evidence we have. Come look."
Ash moved only after getting a nod from Sycamore and approached the computer to see the video. Alain was correct when he said it was old and grainy, but he was able to tell what the pokémon was before it evolved. "The video does look old," Ash said as he watched it once more, "but I could tell that was a Lucario."
Sycamore nodded in agreement as Alain spoke up, "We agree as well that it was a Lucario. Unfortunately we don't know where the video was taken or how long ago it was."
Ash, who was replaying the video over again, slowed it down to see if he could tell where it was taken. After all, the only place he knew that had Lucarios was in Rota years ago. He hummed softly as he looked frame by frame until he saw it. On the edge of the screen was a building. A very familiar one.
"This was taken in Rota," Ash said a few minutes after silence fell between them. His voice caught their attention.
"Where?" Sycamore asked as he approached the teen. He hadn't heard of the place before.
"Rota," Ash said again, "It's a kingdom to the north of Kanto across the Pewter mountains. I was there a few months ago at the ruins. I recognize this building." He paused the video and pointed at the edge of the frame to show them. "It's the ruins left by the Aura Guardians when they died out hundreds of years ago. Sadly the ruins collapsed and there's nothing to see from the stone."
"Damn," Sycamore said as he let out a sigh and leaned back against his table, "So there is nothing we can do to go see them?"
Ash shook his head as he answered the question, "Queen Ilene has closed off the border of the kingdom and the ruins to everyone who doesn't have permission from herself to be there."
"Well thank you anyway," Sycamore said as he gave Ash a small smile before he switched subjects, "Now how about I take a look at your orb to see if I can't tell what pokémon it goes too?" Sycamore walked over to a shelf and grabbed a small device that had an indention in the middle under a glass case.
"If you would?"
Ash nodded and set his bag on the ground to make it easier to look inside it. He also grabbed his egg and set it down beside the bag to get to the small pocket he had kept the orb. His egg was still healthy, thank Arceus, despite him not knowing how to give the youngling inside any Aura and he hoped it stayed that way until he could give it the Aura it needed.
He shrugged his bag back on after retrieving the orb and carefully picked the egg up before walking over to the table. He placed the egg on it, and wrapped an arm around it to keep it from accidentally rolling off, as he reached out to place the orb in the device. Ash watched as the professor closed the glass case on it before pressing a few buttons.
They waited and watched the little machine as it whirred and lit the ball up inside it. Ash watched fascinated at all the colors the ball shone before it settled back down to its original colors. He held back a jerk as the machine let out a high pitched beep and released its latch to let someone grab the ball inside. He reached forward and grabbed his orb as Sycamore walked over to the larger computer and plugged the small machine to it.
On the larger screen a digital picture of his orb appeared along with some writing detailing how much it weighed and what colors it had before it got too technical for Ash to understand. One word did stand out to him.
Lucario.
His little orb, that he had gotten from the Cerulean Gym, was a Lucario Mega Stone. He narrowed his eyes a bit as question after question popped up in his head. He didn't know if it was purely coincidental that he had found his egg and then the orb, or if by some force that he was meant to find the two. He was so caught up in his own thoughts he didn't notice the looks being shot at him by the other two humans in the room.
