"Mercedes, is that you?"

I turn to my right and feel the blood drained from my face as I feel my body freeze. It was practically impossible... Quinn is staring at me with wide, Hazel green eyes. She seems different from the last time I saw her. Her hair is shorter so it gives her that edgy look. She's wearing a swim top and I can see she has a tan.

She's holding a volleyball in her hands and I suddenly remember why the volleyball game going on a few feet away made me nervous.

"I can't believe it's you," she says looking at me with wide eyes.

I don't say anything, mostly because I don't know what to say. I just want to run away.

"Hey! Quinn!" Someone yells at him. "The ball!"

Quinn turns and throws the ball to them and I take that chance to turn and walk away.

"Hey, Mercedes, wait!" She says as she catches up to me.

I stop, remembering I'm not alone and look for Jane. She's sitting down on the sand with her knees brought up to her chest as she continues to talk with her friend.

I sigh as I look at Quinn. "Please leave me alone."

"I'm not doing anything to you," she says raising her hands up defensively.

We look at each other for a moment.

"Your hair is different," She finally breaks the silence.

Under different circumstances, I would have pointed out that hers does too but I don't say anything. She's is right. Three years ago my hair was long and straight. Now, I keep it shoulderlength and I also have choppy bangs that cover my forehead. I never kept my hair short or had bangs before, but I actually liked this hairstyle and kept it for the past three years.

"You disappeared," She says looking at me accusingly. "Mercedes-do you have any idea how long we looked for you? My brother-"

I shake my head. "Stop. I don't want to talk about this." I turn around. "Just leave me alone, Quinn."

"You can't just expect me to walk away and pretend I didn't see you," She says catching up to me.

"Yes, I do."

"Mercedes-stop," She says putting her arms on my shoulders, making me come to a stop.

"Can you just chill for a second? Forget my brother." She raises her eyebrows. "What about me? I thought I was your friend."

"Quinn-"I say, looking around nervously.

"He's not here," She says, probably reading the look on my face. "It's just me. So will you please just talk to me?

I look at her for a moment."It doesn't matter. I'm actually leaving."

She shakes her head. "I don't think so. Have lunch with me or I will call him.

I glare at her. "You wouldn't dare."

She takes out her phone from her pocket. "Try me."

"You have no business in this, Quinn," I say angrily. She is pissing me off. I hate when people try to make me do something I don't want to.

"Why are you so scared about talking to me? We used to be friends, remember? Even best friends before you married my brother. I just want to talk to you." She half smiles. "Please.

I shake mny head. "I don't want to talk."

"So I'll do the talking then.

"I'm not alone," I say looking at Jane.

Quinn follows my gaze. "Is that your sister?" She looks at me. "I'm sure she's hungry too."

As if she were listening, Jane stands up and looks around. When she sees me, she begins to make her way towards us.

"Mercedes?" She asks with a frown when she reaches us.

"Hi. I'm Quinn," Quinn says when I don't say anything "We met a few years ago. I don't know if you Remember me".

I do," Jane says slowly. "You're Sam's sister.

I look away at the sound of his name. It has been so long since I've heard it.

Quinn looks at me before nodding. "You remember."

"Of course I do. I was fourteen not two," Jane says looking at me. "She doesn't like to talk about it." She tells Quinn when I don't say anything.

"I can see that," Quinn says with a smile.

I sigh. "Okay. Let's get this over with."

"There's this really good sub place around the corner." Quinn suggests.

I shrug. "Sure." I'm not really hungry. I'm just trying to comply with my side of the deal so Quinn doesn't call Sam. I can feel my body shake as we begin to walk away from the beach. I have spent the last three years avoiding this and now it's happening. I knew coming to California was a bad idea but what were the odds of this? One in a million? I must have the worst luck in the planet.

"So what are you guys doing in California?" Quinn asks as she walks next to me. Jane is walking in front of us. "I assume you don't live here or else we would have found you."

Before I can say anything, Jane turns to look at her. "It was my birthday yesterday and she brought me as my birthday gift."

I narrow my eyes at her. "Jane." I warn.

"Happy birthday," Quinn says at the same time.

"Thanks," She says then turns around.

Her hair is dripping wet and her blue shorts look heavy as she walks. There is a light breeze that is making her ruffled crop top flow in the air.

Quinn turns to look at me. "So how have you been? You know besides pretending you didn't have a life here?"

"I see you haven't changed. You're still annoying," I say rolling my eyes at her. I'm beginning to relax a little. Quinn is familiar, after all. She's not a stranger no matter how much I wish I could pretend she is.

She chuckles. "I'm flattered you remember considering you never answered my phone calls. I kept calling, you know. Even after the phone stopped ringing. Even after the machine kept telling me the phone was out of service. I kept calling." He turns to look straight ahead.

"And then I kept waiting, hoping you would call." She pauses then looks at me. "You disappeared, Mercedes."

"That was the point."

"You are so selfish." She shakes her head in disbelief.

I stop walking, making her stop too. "I am not going to have this conversation with you, Quinn. You have no idea what I've been through."

"So tell me. Tell me what made you leave. Tell me what made you run and never come back," She says looking at me intensely.

We look at each other for a moment. And then the sound of a car's tires screeching and someone screaming makes us turn our heads to the street. I realize we stopped walking just before crossing the street. I feel my heart skip a beat when I don't see Jane anywhere.

A guy is coming out of a black car."Oh God." He says as he walks around his car.

"Jane!"I yell and then I run across the street when I see her laying down on the other side of the car. "Oh my god. Oh my god." I whisper covering my mouth with my hand.

"I'll call 911!" Quinn says immediately dialing on her phone.

Suddenly, Jane moves as if trying to stand up and I feel relief go through my body. She's alive.

"Jane, don't move!" I scold but I reach down and help her sit on the curb. She is bleeding from the left side of her forehead and I pull her hair away, revealing a nasty cut.

"Ow." She says as she clutches her left arm. "What happened?" She asks as she looks around. "Oh, God." She glares at the guy who is running a hand through his hair nervously. "You hit' me!" She accuses.

"I am so sorry. i didn't see you-"

"There is a stop sign." I tell him, glaring up at him. "You were supposed to make a stop anyway. You were on your damn phone weren't you?"

He shakes his head. "Im so sorry."

I glare at him some more before looking down at Jane's arm. I'm not a doctor but it doesn't look good. It is swollen and red around the middle of her forearm which is also bent in a way I know an arm is not supposed to bend. I'm almost positive that it is broken and it makes my blood boil and want to punch the stupid guy on his stupid face.

"Ow, Mercy, it hurts."

I can tell Jane is trying not to cry and thankfully, the ambulance doesn't take long to arrive.

A police car arives first followed by the ambulance. The police officer talks to Quinn and me while the paramedics place Jane on the ambulance cot. The other cop is talking to the driver who seems nervous as he talks. He should be because he is getting a citation. There was no way in hell he is going to get away with this.

As the cop walks away, I let out a sob that I've been holding in since I saw Jane lying on the street.

"Hey, it's okay," Quinn says as she puts her arms around me. "She's going to be okay."

I try to speak but I can't so I just let her hold me while I cry until I see a paramedic approach us. I wipe the tears on my cheeks quickly as he says, "We're going to Memorial Hospital, one of you may come with us."

I nod. "I will." I turn to look at Quinn.

"I will meet yon there".

I nod again and then get on the ambulance. The paramedics put an arm sling to support Jane's arm while we got to the hospital. They also checked her blood pressure and cleaned up the blood which was running down the side of her face. I hate to see her like this but I know she's going to be okay, as long as she doesn't have a concussion or something else.

She is alive and that is already a win. Jane looks up at me and I know we're both thinking the same thing. I smile at her reassuringly. "You're going to be okay."

She nods but I can tell she's fighting back the tears.

She's going to be okay.

We're going to be okay...
