"I'm sorry, Allie. All the tests show the same thing," Ed said, and I could see the sadness in his eyes behind the green-tinted glasses.
Sterile. Barren. Unable to have children. Me. Me and Dash. No children. Not any.
Ever.
This can't be happening.
"-Beep- Allie? It's Shana, Ed just called me, I'm here if you need me, girl."
You can't understand, Shana. You, you and Lance have your daughter, young, vibrant Cass, barely even four. How could you know what it's like?
"-Beep- Dash, Conrad, if you guys need anything, just tell me. I mean it, anything."
Conrad, the older brother I never had, always looking out for me - except this is the one time when he can't do anything.
"-Beep- It's me, Buzz, I'm not gonna try and claim I know what you guys are going through, but if it'll help I'll listen... Actually, you've probably had offers from some of the others for the same thing. If nothing else, I do have a good new story to tell you guys about something that happened a couple months ago... Plus I still make a good punching bag."
That man always knows how to lighten a situation, even if he has to do it at his own expense... Thank God, I was starting to get even more depressed...
"-Beep- Mr. Dashiell Fairbourne? This is Chief Nicholes of the Wichita Police. I regret to inform you that your brother and sister-in-law were killed last night in a car accident. Your neice survived, however..."
"DASH!"
"This is your room," I told the eight-year old dragging her teddy bear behind her.
"It's pretty," she said quietly.
"Don't worry, Marissa, you can stay here with your Uncle Dash and me for as long as you want."
"Aunty Allie?"
"Yes, honey?"
"Does this mean you're my new mommy?"
It was all I could do to not cry as I knelt and hugged her.
