As the bitter truth washed over Rose, her insides turned to ice in a way the freezing temperatures of the Atlantic had not. It was not just her body that was numb- it was her mind, her heart, her soul that had frozen, and no blanket could thaw it.
For no blanket could compare to the warmth of Jack's embrace.
After she had watched Jack's face sink to the bottom of the ocean, how could she stop thinking about his blue eyes, now that she would never see them again?
How would she ever smile again now that Jack could not smile with her?
How could she live without him?
As the Carpathia rocked back and forth, Rose leaned over the metal railing and gazed into the water.
The water that had stolen Jack.
Suddenly the railing felt like a cage, separating her from Jack, and she tentatively leaned over the side of the ship. She wished with all her heart that she was with him, even when he was at the bottom of the sea. If that's where Jack was, that's where she wanted to be too.
Without anymore hesitation, Rose climbed over the railing and stared down into the ocean that had claimed over 1,500 lives. What was one more life lost in the freezing depths below?
What was the point of life without Jack?
She closed her eyes, and remembered the last time she had been about to throw herself off a ship. Jack had been there to save her then, but he wasn't here now.
"I'm telling ya, water that cold, like right down there, it hits you like a thousand knives stabbing you all over your body. You can't breathe. You can't think. At least not about anything but the pain."
Was that how he had died? In unbelievable pain?
But somehow physical pain didn't matter to her. Not anymore.
A thousand knives stabbing her all over her body was nothing compared to the grief, the loneliness, the inescapable truth that Jack was gone. All she had to do was let go of the railing, just let go, and she would see him again…
There was no life without Jack. He had saved her, but could she save herself?
If she could just let go of the railing…
But her hands seemed frozen to the spot. She closed her eyes, and thought of the only thing that had ever mattered to her: Jack Dawson.
She realized that she couldn't forget his soothing voice, or his blue eyes, or his talented hands…it was a part of her now.
Every memory, every touch, every word Jack had said to her came rushing back to her as his dieing wish echoed in her mind…
"Never let go".
And she didn't.
