The likelihood of this chapter being the shortest of the entire storyline is very high. It's purpose is to serve as a glimpse into another character's life, as brief as it may end up being (edit: it did turn out to be quite brief but hopefully it's given you some minor insight to Hajime's character).

Can't recall if I ever mentioned this but I will say it again, regardless; it's up to you, right now, to imagine the attire of the characters, based on the situations they're within. In time, we'll describe attires; they're very unimportant right now (and will still be unimportant later but it'll help ya'll have a clearer picture of how they present themselves).

June 17th, 2001

Hajime's life has been relatively normal, unchanging.

Well into his thirteenth year of life, his personality is becoming much more grounded, permanent. He remains a bit of a loner, preferring the silence of his bedroom over socializing with others, outside of the Yagami family lineage. In addition, his focus on school has yet shifted to other things; no hobbies keep him from avoiding homework and studying. His consideration for others and his slightly defensive nature towards his stuttering issue also remain.

"Newly" arriving into his characteristics as a person, except not really because it's been a slight problem for a while now, is indecisiveness and scatterbrain tendencies, both of which are entirely Light's fault, though Hajime will never tell him that to his face. His friend's constant demand for an immediate answer about something, whether it be important or not, has resulted in Hajime being somewhat incapable of making decisions effectively; if anything, it's made him more hesitant to respond right away, even if he's already got an answer in mind. As for the scatterbrain matter, it also stems from Light rushing him, just in a different manner; he now has tendencies to get easily distracted from conversations and schoolwork, and he's always been a bit unorganized but perhaps slightly more now, often grabbing the incorrect notebooks; he's long given up trying to reorganize all his notes by this point, instead leaving sticky notes on each, to remind himself which subjects are inside, though he always forgets to add the chapters which the notes were taken from.

Such is the life of Hajime now. Just another part of himself to be insecure about, something else for Light to constantly point out unnecessarily.

Even so, Hajime's content with his life, regardless of the horrifyingly glaring flaws and the friendship with Light that's slowly treading into toxic, bad friend territory. At least he has more than his adoptive grandmother in his world now; at least he's not as lonely anymore.

Except, it turns out he still kind of is. Lonely, that is.

He lies in bed, wide awake in the middle of the night, feeling disheartened; all weekend, Light has ditched him for a girl. A girl. Never in a million years did he expect that; the boy was always saying girls were yucky and gross, and he'd rather be dead than be seen around girls, yet he's currently hanging out with one, a few actually.

And it's completely platonic, of course; he's only, like, twelve. And it's totally normal for boys around this age to start being somewhat intrigued by the opposite gender. Even so, Hajime has been completely blindsided by this turn of events, especially since he's yet to be even remotely interested in being around girls, too. Light's sister, mother, cousin, and cousin's mother are cool folks, and very female, but he doesn't care about that; he just thinks they're alright, nice.

He doesn't understand. His grandmother tried explaining, mentioning puberty amongst other things age appropriate, but he still doesn't understand how guys can go from being all "yucky girls" to "ooh, girls, let's play videogames" and ditch their guy friends. Like, huh? Is that part of growing up, too? He doesn't get it.

Thinking about it some more, and remaining sad about it, he decides to just accept Light's behavior; it's not like he'll always be that way, right? He'll get bored of playing with girls and hangout with him again, eventually. He hopes so, anyway; best to remain optimistic.

His thoughts roam to another friend; Light's cousin, Anju. She lives elsewhere now, though it's only temporarily. He hasn't communicated with her very often, not since she left; time differences and whatnot. He assumes she's been having a pleasant time; none of her family has claimed she had "another episode of crazy", so he can, at least, figure out on his own that she hasn't encountered anything supernatural again, or at least, she's not mentioning it aloud to her family anymore.

Another friend, he thinks, brain backtracking to the start of his thoughts about Anju. When did that happen? He used to just think of her as his tutor or Light's cousin; apparently now, it's friend and Light's cousin. I wonder what her classes are like. His thoughts have become a bit sidetracked.

Before too long, he has fallen asleep.
