Only the Beginning Chapter Three, Page 12
It was during Lent that Spring was finally starting to show itself. The cherry blossom trees were just starting to bud, lovely wildflowers of dogwood, tiger lilies, and goldenrod cattail were making their presence known. Robins were spotted and the songs of skylarks, stellar's jay, rosy finches, and chickadees were heard whenever anyone stepped out.
It was tempting to have the school day lesson outside, but the air was still cool, even in the sun, and there were puddles where the snow had melted. Dee was ready for her next lesson. Today though, Elizabeth was taken aback when Nathan dressed in his red serge came to the classroom.
"Oh, Nathan, I didn't know you were coming!" Elizabeth was startled.
"It was my idea Elizabeth. I am here to talk to the students about Dee and my trip across Canada. She promised to bring postcards to share, but I also have a map and some interesting facts about our provinces. I'm sure you don't mind." he quipped.
Elizabeth bit her lip, "All right Constable, please come in."
The class turned around and grinned when they saw their Mountie in their classroom.
"Hello Constable!" Emily greeted.
"Is Newton here too?" Harper asked.
"Hello everyone!" Nathan greeted them all as he walked towards the front following Elizabeth, "and yes, Newton's outside."
Elizabeth gathered her things, gave Dee a half-smile, and exited to the back office.
"Children, Constable Grant has offered to give you some very interesting facts about our trip across Canada by train to Toronto and Niagara Falls. He has about a half hour, before he needs to leave, so let's get started right away." Dee was grinning and so were the children.
With that introduction, Nathan took a map that he had and held it up. "Now, I know you already have a map of Canada here in your classroom, but this map has each province in detail. Who knows what province we live in?"
Cooper raised his hand, "That's easy, we live in British Columbia."
"Right, now do you know where in BC which is abbreviation for British Columbia, we live?" Then Cooper came up to the front and pointed to Hope Valley.
"Yes, you're right! Now your teacher, Mrs. Grant and I left from Hope Valley here in British Columbia to travel all the way by train to Toronto!" he took his finger and moved it across the map from west to east.
"How long do you guess it took us by train?" Nathan looked around.
"Maybe three days?" Karen asked.
"Actually, it took us five days each way. That's a long time to be in a train, but on the train you can sit back and enjoy the view as you travel through swathes of undeveloped forest, vast marshlands, canyons, river valleys and small towns." Nathan informed them describing each province. "We also saw lots of wildlife like fox, moose, and even peregrine penguins."
Dee had postcards of some of the scenery they enjoyed and started to pass them out to the class. "There's so much to see! You can relax in the dining cars and get to know your fellow adventurers. There's nothing like card games, reading, and great views to inspire conversation. Then you drift off to sleep listening to the click-clacking rhythm of the train in your private cabin." she winked at Nathan.
Nathan shifted gears and asked if any of the students had seen Niagara Falls. Not one of them had, so he described in great details the noise of the water pounding down below, the spray as the water hit the rocks, and the beautiful cascading water some with of it in a horseshoe pattern.
"Do you know that some of the falls are in the United States and some in Canada?"
Dee asked around.
"Really? Did you go into the United States too?" Angela asked.
"No," Nathan answered, "but we did hike around and saw as much as we could as we only stayed for one night there."
Dee passed around more postcards of the Clifton Hotel and more pictures. "We stayed in Toronto at the Queens Hotel too. Constable Nathan has family there. His family, arrived there when his mother, Mrs. Grant came over from Germany by ship and stayed there. So, we were visiting his Aunt, Uncle, and cousins."
"Look at the pictures closely and you'll see railroad tracks in the street, they are used for electric cars that run on the streets connected to electric cables above. In the city, there are automobiles and streetcars. You won't see horses there." Nathan explained.
"That wouldn't be good for poor Newton. He wouldn't have you to take care of him." Opal said sadly.
"Don't worry, I'll always be with Newton, he's my buddy!" Nathan laughed.
Elizabeth was listening from the office and peeked out. She was just about to end the discussion when Dee spoke up, "Children, Constable Nathan surprised me in Toronto and took me to the Opera House!"
Paul asked, "What's the Opera House?"
Dee explained what opera was and announced that she was going to bring some records next time for them to hear what it sounded like. "Now, I can't sing opera, but I can tell you that it's a drama set to music basically sung in Italian, that tells a story."
"If it's Italian, how do you know what the story is about?" Emily asked.
"Great question!" Nathan nodded with a crooked grin and looked at Dee.
"Emily, as you might guess, this is not Constable's favorite type of music, so I will tell you more at our next lesson, when I bring the records. Any other questions?"
Most of the children had at least one other question, so the half hour went by very fast. Elizabeth was relieved when Nathan tipped his hat and bid her goodbye. She quickly asked the children to quiet down and open their history books, but she knew they were excited by Constable Grant and Dee's lesson. Dee walked to the door with Nathan and whispered, "Thank you for your support today. I love you!" and hugged him goodbye.

Fiona was at Christy's house to pick her and Timi Anne up for breakfast and a visit to meet Clara and baby Michael at the Cafe. When she knocked at the door, she heard voices, some seemed a bit angry.
After a minute or so, Christy answered the door with a disturbed look on her face.
"Hello Fiona, sorry I had taken longer to answer than I should've. Please come in."
When Fiona stepped inside, she immediately picked up a tense feeling in the room. "Hello Christy!" she tried to brighten up the atmosphere. Then she whispered, "is everything all right?" she questioned.
"Not really," Christy whispered back.
Right then, Anne Lipinski stepped up to Fiona. "Are you Mayor Fiona?" she asked with a discerning look on her face.
"I am. Nice to meet you personally Mrs. Lipinski." Fiona held out her hand.
Without reciprocating, Mary nodded. "Likewise, I am Mary Lipinski. I'd like to ask you a question or two if you don't mind."
"Go ahead," Fiona waited.
"Are you the one who opened your home to Christy when she was discovered in the cabin?"
"Yes, I knew she needed to be under close observation and care of Dr. Faith, so I was more than happy to have her stay with me." Fiona offered.
"Well, ma'am did it occur to you that she should return to her family home?" she challenged Fiona.
Fiona was flustered with Mary's suggestion, but also one who could gather composure, stated, "No, it did not Mary, as Christy clearly didn't want to go back. Her feelings were one of fear because she wasn't welcome to stay with you in the first place. Besides, she needed close observation and care by the doctor."
"I would've taken care of her. She is just a child, she needs her mother." Mary grunted.
"Excuse me, mom, but this was my decision, not Fiona's. And, I'm not a child. I am a 19 year old woman who is also a mother. Please don't be upset with her. She helped me, and quite a lot. I had a safe place where I felt welcome and with her and Pastor Joseph's help, Rick was told about Timi Anne..."
Mary interrupted looking at Christy, and couldn't help but say, "Why was he told before we were?"
Fiona quickly spoke up, "Mary, this was how it should have been handled, after all he is Timi Anne's father. This doesn't mean you and your husband would've been left out, not at all, but she is no longer just your daughter, she is now a woman and a mother."
"Like I told you, Mom, I was anemic and had an infection. Dr. Faith was concerned that I healed, or I'd have to be taken to a hospital in another town. Fiona was there for me. Please don't take this out on her, please understand." Christy's anger was turning to tears.
Mary grabbed her apron and wiped her tears and then looked away. She stared out the window for a long painstaking minute, and then turned to Christy, "That's what I've been trying to come to terms with. I never wanted your father to cast you out, and I feel responsible for not stopping him. If I had, you wouldn't have gotten an infection and became anemic." Mary began to tear up again and reached for her daughter.
Fiona suggested she come another time and let the two of them alone, but Christy broke away from the hug with her mother and said, "Please don't go Fiona, I've been looking forward to this."
With that Christy looked sympathetically at her mother and said, "I understand you now, as a mother myself, that you always wanted the best for me. I want you to understand me now, I want a future with Timi Anne and Rick. I love you and dad, and I appreciate having a bed and food here, but I need to help myself too. Please realize I need to talk to someone close to my age with a baby, and Fiona has a friend in town she's taking us to visit. Remember Clara who's baby, Michael was baptized with Timi Anne? She lives at the Cafe and so I'll be there."
Mary sighed and nodded her head. "How long before you get back home?" she asked, still not willing to think of Christy as a woman and not her child.
Christy was putting Timi Anne's coat on and stopped, looked at her mom and said, "Mom, not to worry. We'll be fine. We'll see you later." and gave her mom a hug then picked up Timi Anne and with her eyes indicated to Fiona to open the door.
As Christy sat in the car, she let out a huge breath of stress. Fiona said, "Just breathe."
Driving to town Christy told Fiona that there had been so much tension at home she could cut it with a knife. Her mom wanted to mother her and wouldn't allow
her any space as her mom was hovering around her.
"I'm sure she's overcompensating for the guilt she feels for not stopping you from having to leave. I think she needs a few talks with Pastor Joseph too, or maybe better yet, his wife, Minnie. Let me think on this and we'll see if your mom can get some support." Fiona tapped Christy's knee.
When they reached the Cafe, it was so warm and cozy that Christy forgot for a little bit about her mom and was happy to get away and see other people. Fiona picked out a table for two and sat down. When Minnie came up to see them she remembered Christy from the baptism and that made Christy very happy. After they placed their order, Fiona told Minnie that she needed to talk to her about a favor after the breakfast crowd was taken care of.
Fiona held Timi Anne while Christy ate a hearty breakfast and they talked some more about the situation. "I wish I could get a job Fiona," Christy said, "I need to support myself somehow."
Fiona thought for a second and then said, "I could always use help at Nichols and Dimes especially as I'm getting busier being the Mayor. Although, I'd have to teach you how to cut hair and style. Would you be interested?"
"Yes, of course, but I need someone to watch Timi Anne. I can't expect my sister Maggie too as she helps with the household for mom while she teaches."
"Let's give this some more thought. I'm not giving up on this." Fiona winked.
After breakfast, Fiona took Christy upstairs to Clara and Michael. They started talking and the babies were content, so Fiona left them to get back to work. "Telephone me when you're ready she told Christy." then off she went to find Minnie.
Only the Beginning Chapter 3, Page 14
Fiona caught Minnie free for a few minutes now that the breakfast crowd was finishing up. "Minnie, do you ever do house calls?"
"House calls?" she crinkled up her nose with a questioning look.
"Yes, house calls for the soul. Christy's mother is in need of some spiritual direction. Her name is Anne and she's been home on a huge farm with her husband, David, and their eight children. Not only does she care for the family, but she also home schools all the children. Her family is her whole world and right now she relates to Christy as just her child too, and little Timi Anne as just one of the children." Fiona explained.
"That's a very delicate situation for me to counsel her with. I don't know her situation at all. What is her reason for not sending the children to school?" Minnie asked as she handed Fiona a cup of coffee when they sat down.
"I'm not sure, but from what I gather, it's probably her way of keeping an eye on the children as she's very protective of them. From what Christy told me, she has them stay at the farm all the time. The older children take care of the younger and the girls also help around the house and the boys outside with their dad."
"That's not healthy if they don't leave the farm. They need socializing." Minnie sipped some coffee and thought a bit. "I guess I could go out there and invite them to church, maybe bring them some of Emily's apple strudel."
"They haven't gone to church because they are very devout Catholics from what Christy told me. Her dad is on a committee to build a church locally. So, they pray at home and read Scripture waiting for the traveling priest to bring them Communion until then." Fiona shared.
"Yes, but Joseph has been out there to talk with David since the baptism. He helped her father to accept that Christy needed him to accept her, Timi Anne, and Rick. Whatever Joseph and David discussed has helped, since Christy and her father have reconciled and he is nice to Rick when he sees him." Minnie explained.
"That's why Anne needs help and you might be the one to help her. She sees me as almost a threat. It was a difficult experience this morning when I picked up Christy and Timi to bring here. I believe she resents the freedom Christy needs to get away, something Anne doesn't have time for." Fiona suggested.
"If somehow Anne would be willing to let the children attend public school, she would be free to come into town and meet some of the ladies, like the Chickadees. Thanks for bringing it to my attention Fiona. I'll talk to Joseph and see what he suggests." Minnie said, "I'll get back to you soon."
When Fiona opened up Nichols and Dimes she already had a list of customers who needed cuts, shaves, and styles. With spring almost here, it would get very busy for her mayoral duties. Gas lines, new houses, the Mercantile expansion, etc. would have her busy as a beaver. She definitely could use help at the shop. So, who could she help watch Timi Anne when Christy came to learn her new job with Fiona?
As she was deep in thought, Rosemary came in. "Hello Fiona! How are you?"
Startled Fiona looked at Rosie and replied, "Fine, what brings you here?"
"I want an up-do hairstyle for this Saturday. We will be celebrating adopting Paul!"
"Oh, are you planning a party?" Fiona asked.
"Not a party, just a dinner out with some good friends, at Billees. I want to show Paul how excited I am, by changing my hairstyle for him. So, I'd like to make an appointment for Saturday morning. Oh, and Fiona, keep the early evening free for joining us at the dinner!" Rosemary called as she left as quick as she came.
Rosemary stopped at Dottie's Apparel to see if the little suit she ordered special for Paul came in. Dottie wasn't opened yet as she and Henry were having a fun conversation over at Billees where they had enjoyed brunch together. When Rosemary walked in and saw the couple chatting at the corner table she wasted no time and went right up to them, "Excuse me Dottie, but why aren't you at the Apparel shop now?"
Henry stood up and greeted Rosemary, "Hello Rosemary, it's my doing that Dottie is here. We've been busy discussing what clothing we need for the mens and boys department. So you see, Dottie is actually working." he smiled. "Good day ladies!"
When Henry walked away, Dottie stood up and put her arm through Rosemary's saying, "Let's go to the shop now, shall we?" When they arrived, there was a note saying, package to be picked up at the Mercantile.
"That must be what you are expecting." Dottie smiled. "Why don't you go down and pick it up."
When Rosemary arrived, Ned handed her the package and just as she hoped, her suit for Paul was finally here.
Meanwhile, Clara and Christy were hitting it off splendidly and they both commiserated about lack of sleep, diaper laundry, and nursing their babies. Clara shared how she missed having Abigail to help and be there for support. On the other hand, Christy shared how stifled she felt by her mom always hovering around her and Timi Anne. "Isn't it funny that I don't have enough help, and you have too much?" Clara declared.
"I'd like to switch for a day." Christy laughed.
"That would be fun!' Clara joined in. "I am going to try to help out downstairs once or twice a week for the breakfast crowd. I need to talk to adults even though some can complain."
"Who will watch Michael for you?" Christy questioned.
"He'll be in the kitchen in the playpen. I'll have to see how that works out." Clara had her doubts.
"Fiona told me she'd teach me to cut hair and do hairstyles. I'm like you, I don't know who can watch Timi Anne, unless I ask Rick's parents. But I want to save up some money to help Rick so we can buy our own home. My mom just wants me to stay home, so I don't know how this can work."
"Abigail used to say to me, "If the good Lord wants it to happen, he'll make a way where there isn't one." Clara said.
"It's been so nice to visit with you Clara, but Timi Anne needs a nap, so I better let Fiona know it's time to go." Christy asked Minnie to call Fiona.
As Fiona was driving Christy home, she thanked Fiona again for making the arrangements with Clara, and even providing the transportation. It was just what she needed.

When Minnie spoke with Joseph, he was very attentive since he had already acquired a good relationship with Anne's husband, David. Joseph had sensed that David was in need of counseling as soon as he witnessed Anne and him come to the church for their first meeting with Christy and her baby. There were very intense feelings that evening for everyone including the O'Neills. Luckily, he had the O'Neills arrive a while later so that the Lipinskis would have time to meet alone first, after being separated for months. It was a difficult but heartwarming moment to behold.
Joseph asked Minnie, "Do you mind going to talk to Mary when I go visit David? I want to invite them to our Church Easter egg hunt and lunch that Rosemary suggested. I think it would be good for the whole family to come to town and meet others."
"I think that's a wonderful idea Joseph. I will go with you, yes, but I would like to talk with Anne alone somehow. I don't know how to do that with eight children and a baby besides. What do you think if we ask them to come as a couple to our home for dinner first?" Minnie thought out loud.
"That would be fine by me. I think the children would allow us time to be with just the adults after dinner." Joseph nodded affirmatively.
"Of course, we would just ask them to go upstairs to their bedrooms and send them off with a bite of dessert. This way we can still have cake and coffee with just Anne and David. What do you say?" Minnie suggested.
"That's fine with me honey, what day are you considering?"
"Perhaps Friday night. Saturday we are invited to Paul's adoption party at Billees."
Minnie said.
"Well then, that sounds good to me, I'll stop by there tomorrow. I have to do some surveying for Lee that way anyways. You are a good woman, Minnie!"
"I know," she blushed, "you always had good taste!" she teased.
Rick came over to visit with Christy and Timi Anne. Christy was very excited to see him as it had been a few days. "Hello Rick!" she smiled warmly as he came inside and gave her a quick kiss.
"I have to apologize for not coming sooner, but dad needed me to help get the machinery up and running for planting season." Rick explained.
"Not to worry, I understand. Come in and have a seat. I think we can find another place at the dinner table!" Christy took his coat and hung it up. She brought him into the dining room where everyone was gathering. As he greeted everyone, he looked around and saw Timi Anne in the playpen. He was about to go over when Christy said, "Rick, can you please wait, I just got her settled so we can eat. After dinner, she's all yours!" Christy smiled.
They enjoyed chatting while they ate. Christy told everyone about her visit with Clara and Michael, and how Timi and Michael were looking at eachother intently and that made everyone laugh. She also mentioned that Fiona might be able to use her help at Nichols and Dimes, so after she learned how to cut and style hair, she would be able to earn some money, but she wasn't sure about Timi Anne.
Her mother stopped eating and spoke up, "Well, she certainly can stay here with us." she seemed shocked.
"Mom, with you homeschooling, Maggie tending to the household chores, and with dad working outside, that's just too much to expect." Christy said.
Anne quickly replied, "Nonsense, if you feel you must work, and you don't, however, we'll make due."
Rick offered, "I'm sure my mom would love to help out. We have no one else but the three of us and she'll be happy to!"
Anne stood up and grabbed her plate and went to the kitchen. David was right behind her, "Annie, honey, we can't do it all. The O'Neills are Timi Anne's grandparents too and they're good people." he said reassuringly as he put his arm around his wife and drew her in for a hug.
"This isn't what I wanted. Christy doesn't even have to work David. She is perfectly fine here." Anne was starting to whimper.
"Annie, we need to talk this through, you and I, I hate seeing you like this. Let's allow Christy and Rick some time together, and you and I go to our room. The children will clear off the table and do the dishes." David tried to calm Anne down.
Christy meanwhile, asked Rick if he would check with his mother about watching Timi Anne. It would be so helpful she thought, besides Mary and Sean don't get to see their granddaughter much at all.
"I have some money to give your folks for Timi Anne and you. I want to help contribute for your care," Rick started, "it's not much, but I want them to know I take my responsibility seriously."
"Oh Rick, I thought you needed the money to buy or rent us a place to live. Are you still thinking that way"? Christy asked shyly.
Rick took a deep breath, "Yes, of course, I want to marry you Christy, that's if you'll have me?"
Christy burst into a huge grin. "Oh yes! Yes! Rick, I not only feel we should, but I want to marry you!" Rick leaned forward and without hesitation, gave Christy a kiss to remember always. It was sweet, romantic, and sincere.
"I don't have a ring for you, Christy, but I hope you understand, I want to provide a home for us and I will have a ring for our wedding day, I promise!"
As if on cue, Timi Anne started to fuss, so Rick went over and picked her up. Don't fuss little one, your daddy is here and I'll always love you and your mother!" he told her as he kissed her little nose as she smiled.

The Chickadees were having a fun time! Teresa was in charge of crafts and today the ladies were learning to create baskets for Easter and decorations. Rosemary had leftover scraps of material and they began by making rope strips with the scraps. The bright colors were cheerful and spring like. With ribbons, buttons, dried beans, and yarn they were busy making little eggs, and cute little basket decorations.
"With the Easter egg hunt and Church Luncheon, I can't wait to make lots of these for the children!" Jane said cheerfully.
"Theresa, these baskets and decorations are adorable" Janice complimented her.
Joyce was happy that she had brought more yarn so she and Diane kept busy knitting and crocheting some of the little animals. Others were making sock bunnies with worn out socks and decorated them with ribbons, buttons and beans. They even made some flowers out of paper and put them in decorated mason jars. Those that crocheted or knit made bunnies, chicks, and lambs.
Brenda and Liz were busy cross stitching jar tops. And all the while, the ladies were laughing and joking, having a great time.
Minnie told them that they needed to stop and clean up because she had to get ready for the lunch crowd. "I hate to have you break this up, believe me, we really appreciate all of your help for the Easter egg hunt and luncheon. Please come back and continue!"
"Oh we will!" Margaret assured Minnie.
"I think this is going to be one of the best days our town will enjoy together." Dawn grinned.
After the ladies left Emily stayed to help Minnie serving lunch. She had been busy baking her honey cookies and lemon bars in the kitchen, so the aroma was sweet and happily tickled the noses of the customers. Just like Christmas time, Emily was getting quite a few orders for Easter. Many in town said that she should open up her own bakery, but she didn't want to be committed to such an endeavor at her age, and with her doctor back in Brook Springs telling her to give her heart a rest. She enjoyed working part-time, because then she could go home to take a nap before starting dinner. If she helped out with lunch too, she'd get a later nap in, so Allie or Dee would cook.
Now, with more baked Easter treats ordered, she was relieved to know that Clara would be helping out during the lunch hour while Michael took his nap.
"Minnie, I wonder how long Clara can help you as Michael gets older. He'll be a handful as a toddler." Emily asked.
"You know Emily I was wondering about that myself. Living upstairs is not the best place for a toddler. Now it doesn't matter, but once they start walking, then those stairs will be a challenge to keep him off them." Minnie agreed.
"We'll just have to take it one day at a time." Emily nodded. "Your beef and noodles casserole smell delicious today. Once the smells sails out to the town they'll be knocking the door down to come in!"
Joseph was the first to come. "I could smell the cooking and baking down the street! When I got back from the country, I told Lee, I'm taking my lunch break."
Emily and Minnie were both in the kitchen, so Joseph walked in and got himself a cup of coffee, dished out a plate of the casserole, and grabbed a honey cookie.
"So Minnie, I stopped by the Lipinskis and asked David to bring his wife over for dinner tomorrow night like you suggested."
"Oh good, did he accept?"
"He said it sounded fine with him and he'd let his wife know. I think he appreciated the idea of spending time alone out with his wife." Joseph winked.
"Wonderful, then after lunch, when you go back out there surveying, tell David to come around 6:00 to our cabin. It's not that far from their farm." Minnie said.
When Joseph finished his meal, he gave Minnie a quick peck on her cheek and left her and Emily to tend to the lunch crowd filling the cafe.
Dee was deciding what to wear to the adoption party this Saturday. She wondered if she needed to be dressed accordingly to her husband's title. However, she was not one to put on airs or feel the least bit haughty, so she quickly dropped that idea like a hot potato.
Having moved the last of her things from Faith's she was finishing up filling her dresser and dressing table with her things. Nathan had teased her about having more stuff than he did. He had just asked her last night, "Why do women have more clothes and shoes than men? Plus jewelry, ribbons and bows for their hair, gloves, purses, make up, and the like! I never expected it to take up so much room!" This caused Dee to throw her pillow at Nathan and they wound up in a pillow fight falling on the bed laughing.
The next day they rode out to their land and talked about their new house that they would be building very soon. With the weather warming up, that promised that the ground could be thawing soon to start building. Nathan talked about having three bedrooms to start, maybe four, indoor plumbing, a good sized kitchen and a living room with a hearth fireplace. He also wanted a stable for Newton and a work shed for a place to do his woodworking. Dee said she'd like a porch swing to sit out and watch the sunsets over the mountains. She was hoping to have a piano, if her parents would allow her to bring the one from Brook Springs to their new home.
"Do you think your Ma will want to come with us?" Dee asked.
"Maybe, but the more I think about it, she might just want to stay in the row house." Nathan suggested.
"Whatever she wants sweetheart, as long as I have you!" Dee looked up to Nathan and as he kissed her forehead, he drew her in close as they embraced looking at their land.

Rick was excited and couldn't help bursting into his home looking for his parents.
"Mom, Dad?" he called.
"In here Rick," his mom answered. Mary got up to see what him had so wound up.
"I've got great news! I can't even believe it myself!" he started.
"What, for heaven's sake has you so wired up?" his dad asked as he looked up from his book.
"Listen, I did not expect this at all, but it just happened. It was like I no longer was in a daze and I could see clearly." Rick continued.
"See what dear?" Mary looked at her husband shaking her head confused.
"That I love Christy and she loves me, so I asked her to marry me! She said yes!" he was so thrilled, he hugged his mom and pulled his dad up out of his chair and gave him a hug too.
"Oh Rick, that's a big decision are you sure?" Sean asked.
"I've never felt more sure about this or anything in my life," Rick grinned from ear to ear. "I promised her a ring for our wedding day."
"When are you thinking about getting wed?"
"As soon as I can provide for them, hopefully soon!"
"All right then, what are your plans? Any thoughts of what you want to do next?"
Sean prodded.
Rick sat down and took a few deep breaths. "First of all, I need a full time job."
"Have you talked with Mr. Coulter as to when he will need your help?"
"I'm planning on that right away. I know from hearing him talk to Bill at Billees that at the town board meeting, there was discussion about all the building they expect to do with new employment. New jobs, mean more people, more housing, more stores, more everything. Anyways, I'm sure I'll have a steady job any day now." Rick acknowledged. "I don't have much money, but I just gave Christy some money for her and Timi Anne. Next, I want to find a place to live of course, before we marry."
"That's a good start," Mary smiled. "but now you have to figure out where to live. You're always welcome here if you'd like. You know..." Mary looked away and then after she gained her composure she continued, "we have Timothy's bedroom that you can use for Timi Anne.
Silence fell.
Sean's face became saddened, but then he quickly added, "It's a circle of life son, when God closes a door, he opens a window, so having Timi Anne here would bring new life back into this old house and into our hearts!"
"That just might work to begin with, I mean I appreciate this offer, but as a husband and father, I'd like to provide for my family on my own." Rick stated.
Sean understood, that was actually what he had told Mary too when they first decided to wed. "There's a little something in it for us too," Sean started to laugh, "having Timi Anne around will bring joy back, and having you here will help me with the farm, that's just when you're not already working."
"Sean O'Neill, now that's not what you tell your son – that you need his help. You should've just ended with having Timi Anne here!" she smiled over at Rick.
"That brings up my next idea. Christy is going to try to learn to cut and style hair with Mayor Fiona at her Nichols and Dimes shop. Fiona took her to town to meet with Clara and her baby Michael. Remember Timi and Michael were baptized together?"
"Yes," Mary and Sean nodded.
"Fiona suggested to Christy that she was very busy with the town growing and all and that she could use her help. She was willing to teach Christy." Rick stopped and looked at his mother. "So, that would mean Christy would need someone to watch Timi Anne for her."
Mary's eyes shone like the rays of the sun and her face brightened, "Say no more Rick," she started to giggle like a schoolgirl, "Yes, I'd absolutely love to watch our precious granddaughter!"
Mary leapt to her feet looking straight at her husband, "Sean, that means we have to clean out the bedroom, paint it, and make it look like a little girl's room now! Oh, how wonderful to have something feminine in this house!"
"Mom, I have to talk to Christy about this first, but I know she doesn't want to stay at her folk's home much longer. There's eight children and she has to share her room with 2 sisters and Timi's crib. Not only that, but her mother is very over protective of her and treats her like a child still."
"Oh dear, I must say this probably is a concern for Anne too. No doubt she felt horrible when David made Christy leave. Everyone seems to try to handle circumstances ourselves and when we don't allow God to take care of us, nothing seems to go right."
Sean nodded, "For too long I blamed God for taking Timothy away and I ignored you and your mother during my grief. I was selfish and didn't see you both were hurting just as much as me. I thank God now that you have Timi Anne. Because of her, I got help that I needed from Pastor Joseph. Who knows how long I would have been stuck in my bitterness without his spiritual guidance."
"He's a good, wise man, and I like him. He might be able to help the Lipinskis." Mary suggested.
"He's already talked with Mr. Lipinski so that he and Christy have been able to reconcile and he is very polite to me now too. I think he would be easy for Mrs. Lipinski to talk to too. At least I hope so." Rick said, not knowing that was already in the works.

Anne was not too sure she and David should leave the children alone to go into town for dinner at the Canfields. The older children would naturally be looking after the younger ones, but she was worried there would be trouble getting them all to bed on time.
"Annie, it's all right if they stay up a little longer. The weekend is coming, and besides you and I haven't been out together in such a long time, this will be fun." David said confidently.
"How long do you think we'll be gone?" Annie asked.
"A couple of hours and I am looking forward to it!" David was obviously happy.
"Well, I don't know why they want us to come to dinner, they barely know us." Anne was disturbed.
"Maybe, that's why. Pastor Joseph has been helping my relationship with Christy. He probably wants to get to know you too." David smiled as he wasn't going to take any excuses from Anne.
"Did you talk to the children about..." Anne started.
"Annie honey, I took care of all that. Are you ready to go?" he asked as he started for the door.
"Children," Anne called, "your father and I are leaving now. We will be back as soon as possible. Please behave yourself and go to bed on time."
The children all said goodbye and waved out the window. Anne waved from their truck for as long as she could see them, then turned to David, "I hope this doesn't take long."
David just chuckled and tapped his wife's knee. "Relax Annie, this will be good for both of us, and the children!"
It didn't take long to arrive at the Canfield's cabin. The lights inside were inviting and the smell of ham baking was a delicious aroma calling them in. "Yum, dinner should be good!" David declared as he opened Anne's truck door for her.
Inside the Canfields were all ready and welcomed them in, taking their coats. "Hello there David!" Joseph greeted. "It's good to have you and your lovely wife Anne here."
"Thank you for having us. Anne and I haven't been out together for years. It's like we are on a date!" David laughed.
Minnie walked over and introduced herself to both of them. "Hello Minnie, we remember meeting you at the baptism of our granddaughter, Timi Anne." David spoke and Anne nodded.
"Please meet Angela and Cooper," she introduced the children to the Lipinskis.
After the formalities, Joseph invited them to sit at the dining table. Angela and Minnie brought in the hot food. They all held hands as they said grace. The dinner of ham and au gratin potatoes was absolutely delicious. The more they talked, Anne relaxed and even began to enjoy herself. It was what Minnie and Joseph were hoping for. Anne even offered to clear the table, but of course Minnie and Angela would have none of that, she was the guest and Anne felt pampered.
When Minnie brought out her double chocolate cake and cups of coffee, both Angela and Cooper got a slice of cake, said goodnight to the Lipinskis, and left for their bedrooms so the adults could talk privately.
"Anne," Minnie started, "I was wondering how you manage with eight children, as we only have two and there are times it's hard. What's your secret?"
"Oh, I wouldn't have it any other way. I love my children and they are my world." Anne declared proudly.
"We are a close family" David agreed.
"It seems to me that the children might want to come to church service and meet other children their own age." Joseph interjected.
"Oh, we are a prayerful family as we pray the rosary every night together," Anne began, "and David is on the committee to build a church."
"I don't doubt that Anne, I was suggesting that your children might enjoy getting together with other children their age." Joseph clarified.
Minnie took this as a lead in for an invitation to come to the town Easter Celebration. "Anne, I personally want to invite you and your family as our guests to Hope Valley's Easter celebration the Saturday before Easter Sunday. We will be having an egg hunt for the little ones, kite flying, song fest with the music teacher, Mrs. Grant, and a family luncheon at Billees. I'm sure your children would enjoy this day with others."
Anne didn't know what to say and looked at David. "Well, we just don't have time, they have school every weekday and the weekend we need to do the housework. They all have chores either inside the house or helping their father."
David could tell Anne felt uncomfortable, but his words were understanding as he gently suggested that they consider going, "I think Annie, we can relax for one day and join in some fun with the town. Our children would enjoy going off the farm for awhile and playing with other children. It would do all of us some good."
"David, how can we keep track of them all if they just run around? I don't want to lose them in a crowd." Anne was obviously upset.
Minnie, reached over the table and poured more coffee in Anne and David's cups. "I don't know what you are afraid of, but I can assure you that we all look after the children as a town. They will be safe."
Anne had a strained look come across her face, "I lost my own siblings and never found any of them. My children are safe at home with us and I intend to keep it that way."
Joseph looked at Minnie, "Anne, please tell us what happened to you. We want you to feel you can confide in us and we will keep what you share with us private. Please, let us understand so we can help you."
Anne sighed, "When my parents came over from Poland, they didn't know any English or French. They were told that they had to learn trades but it was too difficult for them not knowing how to communicate, and they were ignored. Not having steady employment we became poorer and poorer every year until the government took us children away. They scolded our parents for not being responsible for our welfare and we were all put in separate orphanages. I never saw any of my siblings or my parents again." Anne was crying now and David put his arm around her and held her.
Minnie and Joseph felt so sad for Anne, but now they began understanding why she felt the way she did. Joseph was led to walk over to Anne and sat directly across from her.
He held her hands and closed his eyes and began to pray, "Lord, your daughter has been carrying this burden for so long. She was a young girl when she last saw her siblings and parents. Now, she has a family of her own, and she's afraid of losing them too. Please Lord we ask for your grace. Help her to heal from this devastating time in her life. She needs to know you are carrying her through this. Help her to let go of this and let you take care of her family. In Jesus' name we pray. Amen."
Anne opened her eyes and thanked Joseph for his prayers. "Thank you, your prayer has helped me to open my mind and heart. I am willing to consider joining this day of Celebration. I don't want my children to not have any friends," then looked over to her husband. "David, I will agree to whatever you decide. I'm too tired of my constant worry. I trust you with my life and our children's lives," and she rested her head on his shoulder.
"C'mon Annie, let's go home." he said as he hugged her. "Thank you both for not only your hospitality, but your friendship."
As they got up to leave, Minnie hugged Anne. Anne held Minnie's hands and thanked her for the delicious dinner, but most of all for her understanding and help. Anne and David left happy with the burden they carried for so many years left behind them.

Rosemary and Lee were so happy about Paul's adoption that they wanted to celebrate with an early dinner party. They closed Billees to the public and invited their good friends to join them as well as the children from New Hope Orphanage. Karen, Allie's friend, who was adopted by the Landochs was so happy to see the children that came, as some of them were with her too when she was there.
As usual, Rosemary was on top of her game and had lots of colored balloons, and streamers that the children at the orphanage had made and brought with. Bill used the fire pit outside to grill steaks and chicken parts. Knowing that Paul preferred chicken she thought most children would like that for their entree. Emily offered and brought delicious cup cakes with blue frosting. Sam was there with Rick serving the meal of the meat, mashed potatoes, green beans, cupcakes and ice cream, as well as bowls of punch and pots of coffee.
Paul wanted to have games for his friends to play so Rosemary suggested fun games like "Pin the tail", "Drop the clothespin in the bottle", and "Musical chairs". She also had candy and spinning tops for prizes. As usual, Lee played the Victrola, so the time was spent watching the children playing games, and just having fun! The children were laughing and running around all wound up.
"Lee, honey, would you please make our announcement now?" Rosemary asked Lee when she walked over to the Victrola.
"All right, I guess now's a good of time as any." Lee agreed and turned off the machine. "Paul, come over here please. Your mother and I have something we want to share with our friends."
Everyone's attention settled on Lee, Rosemary, and Paul, as they walked up on the stage. First, Lee thanked everyone for coming and acknowledged that Henry had picked up Lillian and the children from the orphanage and thanked him for once again providing transportation. Henry nodded but brushed off any praise.
Lee pointed out that if Dee hadn't been the music teacher for Brookfield last semester, that Rosemary wouldn't have met Paul and their family would still be only two! Dee smiled and thanked Rosemary for driving her up there, so she didn't have to take the stagecoach, but now, they had a new music teacher who was assigned there. The orphans spoke up loudly, "We miss you Miss Dee and Mrs. Rosemary!" Dee and Rosemary shared the same sentiment with them.
Lee continued, "When Bill drew up the adoption papers, we noticed that Paul had no baptismal certificate. So, we asked Pastor Joseph to baptize Paul and he will be baptized on Easter Sunday next weekend."
The people were surprised but so happy. "What a great day to be baptized!" Molly declared.
"Yes, the town will already be celebrating," Dottie said, "so we can celebrate his baptism too!"
"Folks, what I'd like to add is that Bill, as you all know, is my business partner here at Billees, but not only that, he's my buddy, a great friend, and a good man that I respect highly, so without a doubt, I asked Bill to be Paul's Godfather."
"Hey, great choice!" Nathan acknowledged as he grinned at his best friend. Everyone agreed and clapped.
"Now, just to add to the good news, I'd like to share that as my longtime friend and confidant, and a good woman that I highly respect, so without a doubt, I asked Elizabeth to be Paul's Godmother."
"Wonderful!" Sam admired Elizabeth who was sitting at his table with Little Jack.
"Perfect choice!" Most everyone agreed and clapped.
So now, our good friends, there's more food and fun to be had. Enjoy the rest of the night! Lee grinned.
The merriment continued but the children needed to settle down and get to bed for church the next day, so it was an early night for some. Henry gathered those going home to the orphanage and left with Lillian. Sam left to walk Elizabeth home and Rosemary and Paul soon drove home dropping off Emily and Allie. The Canfields drove home too. As Billees emptied out, there were several couples left.
Lee, Bill, Molly, Fiona, Faith, Carson, Dee and Nathan stayed and helped Rick clean up. Since they all pitched in, the cleanup was quick. Rick talked to them as they all gathered around a table having a cup of punch.
"I really need to share something with you. I appreciate working here at Billees and it's been helping Sam. But I have to have steady work now for Christy and Timi Anne. You see, I asked Christy to marry me, and she said yes!" Rick was so happy that he started to laugh. "I can't believe it!"
The men there all congratulated him on making the move, and the ladies were thrilled for Christy. "This is more good news!" Molly said.
"I'm so happy for the both of you!" Fiona was thrilled. "I know Christy is excited."
"That's two engagements now to celebrate!" Dee smiled at Faith and Carson.
"Now, back to the steady work you need, don't you worry Rick, there is so much planning and building that's going to bust this town wide open, so you'll have steady work for sure!" Lee clapped Rick's shoulder. Fiona nodded in agreement.
"Thank you, Mr. Coulter!" Rick shook his hand in gratitude.
"When's the wedding?" Bill asked.
"As soon as we can. We have to tell Christy's folks that Christy and Timi Anne will be moving to my folk's house while we find a place to live." Rick informed them all, but Fiona was not too sure if that was going to sit well with Anne Lipinski and looked away frowning.

The Chickadees only had Holy Week left to finish up their Easter baskets and decorations. Not wanting to interfere with Holy Thursday and Good Friday, they gathered together on Monday, planning to finish up any last preparations. Thankfully, they still had supplies left from last week that they kept at the Cafe.
Minnie had a dedicated shelf for them to store their items, so they'd be available week to week.
Now that they knew Paul was going to be baptized on Easter they decided to make him a special basket with a children's Bible and a cross to hang in his room. Luckily, Ned kept these items in stock. Minnie knew that the Coulters were going to give him a baptism name of William after Bill, his Godfather. So, when they were putting his basket together they all signed the inside cover after writing, 'to Paul William Coulter!'
After finishing up their decorations and baskets they talked about the Easter luncheon menu so they could share it with Rosemary. She was stopping by to check in with the ladies finalizing plans. Since Minnie and Emily were there, Emily offered to bake more cupcakes and Minnie would bake hot cross buns. Molly stopped by and said that Bill already decided to grill hams and turkeys, so if anyone wanted to bring by any meat to him this week he'd appreciate it. Flo announced that all the Easter chocolate and candy arrived in their shipment Saturday. Cheryl, Nancy, and Mary still had canned apples from last fall and offered to bake pies. Connie, Brenda, and Kaye would bring side dishes. Marijane, Ndala, and Denise would be cooking scalloped, sweet, and mashed potato dishes.
"This is just remarkable!" Rosemary declared, when Minnie handed her the list. "Ladies, I must say, you have all outdone yourselves!"
"We wanted to finish up the decorations for you to take back to Billees. "Do you need help decorating?" Teresa asked.
"Teresa dear, thank you for offering, but I have Sam and Rick to help me, and Lee of course. I will pass along this food list for the rest of the town to decide what they want to contribute."
Jane spoke up, "Did you order any wine?" Catherine perked up and smiled.
"For sure, what's Easter without a little fruit of the vine!" she winked.
Emily walked over to Rosemary before she left to ask to talk to her in private.
"Emily, let's step over to the kitchen." Rosemary said as she led Emily by her arm.
"Is everything all right?"
"Yes, it's going just fine, but it's not about me that I want to speak, but what Dee shared with me this morning." Emily wanted to make sure no one else was standing close by, but the ladies were all cleaning up the dining area for the lunch crowd.
"Go ahead Emily."
"Did Lee tell you that the young man, Rick, proposed to the young lady, Christy?"
"As a matter of fact, he did, why?" Rosemary asked.
"Well, that young couple have this darling daughter, Timi Anne, and Christy told Fiona that her mother is very protective of her. Fiona brought her here for breakfast, and to visit with Clara and baby Michael. From what I can tell, neither she or Rick have much of anything and both live with their parents." Emily said.
"Yes, I know Rick has told me a little when he comes into work at Billees. His folks offered them to live with them for now, at least, until they can save enough money to buy or rent their own home." Rosemary added.
"That's what he told everyone last night. Fiona did stop by here this morning for breakfast and was telling Minnie and I that she's worried Christy's mom won't be accepting of the situation if they move in with the other grandparents even though there's more room and it's quieter." Emily was starting to fret. "I know Minnie invited the Lipinskis to come to the Easter celebration and hopes she will start to relax after meeting some of the town. Plus, she hopes the children will make new friends. Maybe then she will allow the children to come to town for schooling, ya?"
"That sounds wonderful Emily, so what is it that you are concerned about?" Rosemary inquired.
"Besides the probable upcoming disagreement with her mother, this young couple have overcome obstacles and have fallen in love." Emily began. It was then that Minnie came in the kitchen and apologized for interrupting. "Not to worry Minnie, I was talking about the situation of Christy and Rick."
"Please go ahead, I'm glad you are talking with Rosemary." Minnie nodded.
"Both Minnie and I want to help them. Perhaps, you could ask Dottie if Christy could possibly wear that bridal gown you and her found upstairs of the Apparel shop? We know Christy won't have a gown, and this would be a lovely way to help." Emily asked.
"Say no more, consider it done, I will talk to Dottie when I return to the shop!"
Minnie spoke up then, "I was also hoping we could have a bridal shower for Christy after Easter when we have one for Faith. Maybe a double shower? What do you think?"
"Yes, of course, that is a marvelous idea! I just love parties!" Rosemary confirmed. "When are Rick and Christy getting married?"
Minnie spoke, "We're not sure, but he told us as soon as possible."
"Ladies, you know you have come to the right person! I love hosting events. After Easter, I'll be right on it. In the meantime, we have to all butter up Anne Lipinski. That won't be hard, when she meets us, she won't know what hit her!" Rosemary charged out the door.
"What did we just do?" Emily was worried as she shrugged at Minnie, but Minnie just burst out laughing.
Only the Beginning Chapter 3, Page 21
It was a lovely Saturday! The sun was shining brightly with barely a cloud in the sapphire blue sky. The air was warmed with a southern breeze, and the birds were chirping and singing their pretty songs.
Inside Billees, just as planned, Rosemary had Rick and Sam covering the tables with pastel-colored cloths, vases of wildflowers, and candles, along with the decorations that the Chickadees had created. The families came with their dishes of food to Billees and dropped it off for the luncheon after the Easter egg hunt.
Relieved the weather was co-operating, Lee and Nathan were busy making kites over at the Lumber Company office, and having a jolly good time doing so. Ned ran over with more kite string as they realized they had more children coming then kites. Mark and Luke pitched in to help get them all done.
Over at Dottie's Apparel, Henry was not too keen about being the one who was elected to wear the Easter bunny costume. "Henry it'll be fun!" Dottie was trying to convince Henry into putting on the outfit.
"I don't want any part of this Dottie. I'm just not good at this kind of thing." Henry dug in his heels.
"Henry Gowen, you are the only one I have left to ask. All the other men are busy," Dottie came a little closer to Henry and ran her hand under his collar while fluttering her lashes. "Please, for me?" and then gave him a kiss on his cheek.
"Dottie, you sure smell nice!" Henry smiled.
"Don't you change the subject Henry; now will you please make me a happy woman and try this costume on?"
"Oh geez Dottie, only for you. No telling anyone though, hear me?" Henry raised his eyebrows and gave Dottie a warning look.
Minnie was thrilled when she saw the Lipinskis coming into town. "She nudged Fiona who was standing next to her and said, "Here comes Christy and her family!"
"You're right, goodness, I never thought I'd see the day!" Fiona was waving to Christy as she came walking toward her holding Timi Anne. They hugged and Timi Anne squealed.
Behind Christy was her sister Maggie, and she remembered right away who Christy had spoken so highly of. "I'm honored to meet you Mayor Fiona!"
Christy also greeted Minnie and thanked her for talking with her parents about coming to the Easter celebration and introduced Maggie to her too. Right behind them came the rest of the Lipinski family. Minnie and Joseph gave Anne and David a hug as they welcomed them.
"Please join us over here, we have a blanket and some chairs set up for us to sit and relax."
Anne and David appreciated their hospitality and joined them. Their children watched the other children running and playing tag, jumping rope, and hide and go seek. Minnie asked Cooper to take the boys over to the other boys, and introduce them. Angela talked with Regina about her wanting to be a nun which really interested her so she explained what a nun does. Tatiana and Alicia stayed close to the girls and soon they asked to join the others and play jump rope.
The children were giddy and ready for the Easter egg hunt. When everyone had arrived, Rosemary led the children over to the area by the pond where they could look for the eggs. She asked Teresa to hand out the homemade baskets that the Chickadees had made for each of them. Then when Nathan said go, off they went hunting for their eggs. Carson was following them around snapping pictures. Some of the older children like Allie, Karen, and Harper just sat together watching the younger ones and coaching them with "You're hot" or "You're cold" as they ran around searching for the eggs. They certainly had a grand time as did the parents laughing at their antics.
Now that the hunt was over and the children had spent quite a few hours running around, it was time to go to Billees and settle down for a luncheon. Bill had been grilling outside on the pit and the aroma enticed everyone to come and get it! Sam and Rick were inside and helped to bring all the food to the buffet table. After making sure all the food was served, and the punch and coffee were also ready, the two men both got off their feet long enough to enjoy their meal. Sam went to see Elizabeth and little Jack and joined them.
Rick was absolutely happy to see Christy and Timi Anne so even though his mom and dad came along, he went to his fiancé and daughter. "Hello to my two sweet girls!" Rick greeted them both with a kiss. "I see your family came Christy. How's it going?"
"Pretty good." Christy replied, as she looked around and offered, "Why don't you ask your mom and dad to come over here and join us all?"
"Great idea!" Rick winked at Christy and then walked over to his parents and asked them to join Christy, Timi Anne, and him.
With all the Lipinskis and the O'Neills they took up two tables. David Lipinski had brought a big beef roast for Bill to grill and Sean brought several pounds of blocks of cheese and sausages.
Nathan and Dee sat with Emily, Archie, Allie, and Karen, Bob and Marie Landoch. Faith and Carson joined them too.
After everyone had their fill of food and dessert, the Easter Bunny appeared! The children were oohing and aahing as he talked to each of them. Darlene from the Chickadees helped the Bunny hand out their Easter baskets. When Paul got his, Rosemary and Lee were very touched and surprised with the Bible and Cross.
It didn't take long for the children asking to go back out and play. This time the children had homemade kites that Mountie Nathan and Mr. Coulter handed out to each of them. The breeze co-operated and the kites flew high in the sky!
Dee walked over to Nathan and told him how she really was enjoying the day. He wrapped his arm around her and he suggested they go for a walk alone. As they walked around the pond, they just happened to find an egg someone had not spotted. Dee giggled and picked it up. When she stood back up she felt a bit nauseous and asked Nathan to help her sit down until it passed. Nathan got concerned and wanted to take her home.
"No need for that. I'll be fine. It passes in a few minutes" she told him.
"What do you mean, it passes? Have you been sick before?" Nathan inquired.
"Just a little here and there, don't worry." Dee stroked his face.
"Promise me if it continues, you'll see Dr. Faith?" Nathan kissed her forehead.
"Yes, sweetheart, but don't fret. It's really nothing."
