Only the Beginning Chapter 5, Page 30

It was Saturday and time for the Bridal shower for Christy and Faith. Faith knew about it and so when she arrived, she found the Chickadees were busy helping setting out the cups of punch, hot tea, coffee, and slices of tea cakes and lemon bars that Emily and Minnie had baked. There was lots of chatter and laughing going on and the ladies enjoyed dressing up and gathering together. Faith was delighted to see the cute decorations in the Cafe and was excited.

Christy was told by her mother about the shower because she had to have her change into a nicer skirt and blouse. Maggie asked if she could come along, and Christy grabbed her hand and said of course. When Fiona pulled up to drive them, Christy asked to make room for Maggie, so they fit in the back with Christy holding Timi Anne in the front seat. When they got to the O'Neills, Rick was anxious and a bit nervous about taking care of his daughter by himself, but with his dad close by he was very happy. Christy gave him her bottle, snuggled their daughter to say goodbye with a kiss, and Rick too. Then she and Mary O'Neill got into the automobile. Fiona was glad to see both mothers sitting side by side, and they were exchanging pleasantries. This time they were squished but luckily it was a short ride to town.

When they arrived, there was hardly any room with all the ladies and gifts. Christy was overwhelmed that so many people were there, but figured it was because of Dr. Faith. So, Clara asked Jesse to bring some chairs from Billees just to fit everyone in, and she got to show off baby Michael for a little while until his daddy came back.

It was then that Minnie shared with everyone that she was considering buying Abigail's part of the Cafe. She had to get the loan approved and then she and her family were considering moving in upstairs, and Clara and Jesse would move to the cabin. That way Clara wouldn't have to worry about Michael falling down the stairs, but it might be difficult for Clara to get back into town to help the Cafe the two morning she planned. Emily was there the other three mornings, and she liked to walk even in the winter. She claimed it cleared out her lungs and the Dr. Carson suggested it would help her heart.

After they enjoyed their desserts and drinks, the two guests of honor sat in chairs side by side. Faith had made it known that she wasn't lacking for anything and asked that any gifts would go to Christy. Of course, no one came empty-handed for Faith.

She was given personalized towels, homemade tablecloths, aprons, freshly made candles and soaps with lemon scent, new bottle to hold her perfume with her new initials, and lotion, doilies, and a negligee nightgown from Molly, her maid of honor. The Chickadees had also made a beautiful summer quilt with patterns of yellow, blue, and red birds. Faith loved all the personal items as they were labors of love and when she used her gifts she'd think of them all. Molly pointed out that she broke two ribbons, so they just might have two little ones!

Christy not knowing many people, was surprised to see so many gifts around her chair. Everyone had taken their time so as not to overwhelm her as they introduced themselves to Christy and got to make acquaintances with Anne Lipiniski and Mary O'Neill.

Minnie had already invited Anne to come to the Chickadees social time and extended it to Mary. "Please come by next week Tuesday as I will be leading a Bible Study again."

Mary Anne added, "On Thursday, I will lead us in a game of rummy. Just for fun!"

Both Mary and Anne nodded that they were interested, but Anne had to home school her children and Mary would have to see if Christy needed her to babysit depending on her schedule with Fiona.

Rosemary had her eye on Maggie and sat next to her. "Maggie, would you be free to work a few days at Billees? Our manager, Sam, is alone now that Rick is going to be working for my husband, Mr. Coulter. We need help soon."

Maggie's eyes brightened, grinned widely, and looked at her mother, "Mom, what do you think?"

Anne, looked at Maggie so surprised, "I don't know. I never though about you working outside the home."

"Mom, I could finally start earning some of my own money." Maggie said as her face lit up.

"Whatever for? You don't need money Maggie." Anne countered.

"I can't stay at the house forever mom. I want to learn a job, and maybe get married some day too." she pleaded.

"Let's give this some thought first let's ask your dad." Anne suggested.

"Mom, I'm 20 years old, I want to do more than just take care of my siblings and household chores. I mean, I love them, I just want my own family some day." Maggie was determined to find a way to start a new life for herself.

Rosemary jumped in, "Let your folks talk about this and I'll wait a few days. Don't worry, the job is yours for the taking." and patted Maggie's knee.

Christy was busy opening her gifts now. She had a repeat of what Faith received with personal items except with her own initials, color choice, etc. This really touched her heart. Then she got a lot more necessary items that were wrapped from the Chickadees.

Marge gave her a beautiful set of dishes for six. Teresa told her she had a bedroom suite and baby crib waiting for her, which was very generous. Jane gave her pots, pans, skillets, and seasonal decorations. Brenda brought lovely glass ware. Kathy had doilies and wash clothes, but she too had two settees, again very generous. Mary Ann had bath towel sets for the couple and for Timi Anne, Gail remembered the silverware, and Catherine brought a tea set. The rest of the Chickadees made a quilt for them with a hearts and flowers design and some darling outfits for little Timi Anne.

The ladies from town were all helping in one way or another. Buying material and sewing her a wedding dress, new shoes, a handbag, spa day, and a wedding reception at Billees all paid for.

Christy's mom, Anne, gave her a beautiful gold medal of Mary to wear, a blue lace handkerchief, and her own pearl earrings that she wore on her wedding day. Anne was really trying her best and Christy could tell and hugged her for a long time.

Rick's mom told her about a surprise that she would not know until the wedding. Christy couldn't imagine what it could be.

Fiona reported that she broke three ribbons and Christy nodded in agreement.

Faith and Christy felt very blessed and happy to have such wonderful ladies as friends!

When Dee went to school on Monday to teach music for the end of the school concert, she was met by Elizabeth at the door.

"Good morning Dee." Elizabeth greeted.

"Hello Elizabeth, how are you?" Dee replied as she continued walking to the back office. Elizabeth was right behind her.

"Dee, I thought you would tell me." she said as she touched Dee's arm to stop.

"Tell you?" Dee was puzzled.

"Yes, we are both work together, so I thought you'd have the decency to tell me that you won't be here teaching next year!" Elizabeth was determined to set the record straight.

Dee turned and looked directly at Elizabeth, "Where in the world did you hear that I won't be returning next fall? Is this because I'm pregnant?"

"There! You finally confirmed it. Why did I have to hear it through the grapevine?" Elizabeth demanded.

Dee was shocked by Elizabeth's question, "We didn't have a moment alone for me to tell you, and I never said I wouldn't be here next year to teach to anyone. Would you please tell me who said that, because I want to ask them not to spread any rumors."

Elizabeth looked away when saying, "I just assumed you would stay home to prepare for your baby. I didn't think that you'd want to return."

"Elizabeth, really? You taught until you had Jack, and didn't you return to teach after you had him?"

"Yes, but that was different. My husband died, but your husband is alive and doing quite well being a Mountie." Elizabeth said somewhat snidely.

Dee sighed. "Elizabeth, can you accept my apology for not telling you sooner? There's so much going on with Faith and Carson's wedding, then Christy and Rick's, plus preparing the school children for their school concert," she paused to take a breath, "and, yes, I am planning on teaching next year until our baby comes."

"Thank you, and I accept your apology." Elizabeth nodded.

"Elizabeth, whatever Nathan's income is, really is none of your concern. That is our private business." Dee had found a little strength inside of her to halt Elizabeth's snippy attitude. "On a happier note, I want to volunteer to help with the Girl Guides program. If I can read the leader's handbook, I'd appreciate it."

"Well, that's very thoughtful of you," thankfully Elizabeth was no longer looking for an argument, "here's mine that you can read through this week before our first meeting Friday. In the meantime, I'll order you your own."

"Thank you," Dee smiled. "Friday it is!"

Back at her family farm, Maggie was not giving up the idea of working at Billees. Rosemary seemed confident that she would be a good worker, and she wanted to prove to her that she was. Besides, the idea of learning something new and meeting new people was exciting. She was beginning to think she was going to be stuck in her family farm her whole life and when she saw little Timi Anne, she knew she wanted her own family too some day. Maggie had been waiting to talk to her dad about the opportunity since she didn't think her mom had mentioned it to him. So, while her mom was inside homeschooling her siblings, she went outside to hang the laundry and that's when she saw her dad and walked over.

"Dad, did mom talk to you about me working in town for Billees?" she asked.

"No, this is the first I'm hearing from about it. What are you talking about?" her dad asked.

"At Christy's shower, Mrs. Coulter asked me if I would be interested in helping Sam in managing the events there. Rick used to help, but now he's going to work for Mr. Coulter." Maggie stopped to watch for her dad's reaction. He was scratching his head, so she continued, "Dad, I need to learn something else besides household chores and I'd like to meet some new people, maybe have my own family someday."

David spoke up then, "I don't see why not. I never thought about it, but you're right honey, you're not my little girl anymore."

Maggie clapped her hands and hugged her dad. "Thank you dad! I can't wait to tell Mrs. Coulter. She said she would wait for me to let her know. Can you drive me to town today?"

"Let me talk to your mother and I'll let you know, but I think we could go after lunch." David chuckled.

In a little while, David went inside, and asked Anne to come to their bedroom for a few minutes to discuss Maggie's job opportunity. He had to reassure his wife that Maggie would be safe and that it would only be part time. Anne was also concerned about how she could find time to do all the housework and teach the children. Plus the invitation to the Chickadee's gatherings seemed like fun. She was getting to know the ladies at the shower, especially Minnie. Minnie was so nice to have her and David over for dinner and now she was hosting a Bible study that she was hoping to attend.

"Annie, you didn't tell me about the bible study." David perked up.

"Since Fiona will be picking up Christy to work at Nichols and Dimes, Minnie invited both me and Rick's mother, Mary to come. David, I really miss going to Mass, so until we our Church is built, I would like a chance to keep my faith strong." Anne looked at David with an anxious smile.

"Annie, this make me very happy. I have been so worried about you cooped up in the house all the time, so we will work this all out for you and Maggie." he reassured her with a kiss on her forehead.

"When I saw how you've changed from being so angry with Christy, since Pastor Joseph has been speaking with you, I was thinking it would benefit me too to talk with someone." she smiled as she snuggled up in her husband's embrace.

Molly and Rosaleen enjoyed the week going shopping and eating at different restaurants. Bill enjoyed treating a night out with the ladies at the famous Empire Theater in Buxton that a few of the others in town had been to. It was a comedy farce, The Girl in the Limousine starring Doris Kenyon. It was quite funny and they all enjoyed their time laughing throughout. As planned, they stopped to eat dinner afterwards.

"How long are you staying in Hope Valley Rosaleen?" Bill inquired.

"As long as it takes me to decide what I want to do with my life and as long as mom will have me." she replied with a questionable look towards her mother.

Molly immediately offered, "As long as you need dear. You're always welcome, my home is your home."

Bill just smiled. Then he grabbed Molly's hand. "Molly, maybe you could talk to Elizabeth about the library, she might need some help with the expansion happening soon. The town will need someone there to order books, catalog them, and keep track of who is borrowing what. There's a lot that needs to be done."

"That would be really a good opportunity Rosaleen. Do you think you would be interested?" Molly questioned her daughter.

"I would think so, I mean, I love to read and I took business and literacy courses." Rosaleen began thinking this through.

"Bill, thank you for that suggestion! I'll be sure to talk to Elizabeth right away. I bet you're right, she'll need help." Molly was pleased with this idea.

When Sam walked over to school on Tuesday to talk to the boys about baseball, he had help with Mark, Luke, and John again. They were willing to continue year round with the boys' sports. It was an easy beginning since most of the same boys who were in football with them signed up for baseball. Elizabeth was happy that there would be sports after school. Most parents agreed that the training taught the boys' discipline, and the game itself taught them team work. Once, they handed out the permission slips to the boys and talked about the game itself, the rules, and that they had to keep their grades up to participate, they left all excited.

Actually, Dee was having the same luck with her music students. The lessons provided them by Nathan, Bill and Dee taught them discipline and the practice together showed them the results of their hard work melding together, proving that the instruments would carry the end of school concert. Extra curricular activities were catching on!

Now, the girls also could look forward to the Girl Guides. Anna agreed to be a co-leader with Elizabeth and Dee, as she was one of the oldest. Their activities to start were basically home skills and first aid. Elizabeth told the girls that the membership is organized into different groups according to age. For right now, being a small school, they were going to start as a group all together. Opal, Angela, Karen, and Allie were excited. Angela suggested they invite the Lipinski young girls to join them, so they could meet other girls. The other girls agreed thinking that would be fun! Dee and Elizabeth thought so too. Angela offered to ask her mom to tell Mrs. Lipinski when she came to Bible Study to bring Regina, Titania and Alicia next Tuesday.

Afterwards, Sam would walk Elizabeth home and if he didn't have an event to set up for, he could spend a few more minutes with her and little Jack. Bill would cover for him and eventually decided with baseball that Tuesdays and Thursdays would be his days off early as he usually had to work the dinner hour on the other nights. This helped Sam a little to pursue Elizabeth like he had hoped. Elizabeth was enjoying his company and the more he was with her, the "old" Elizabeth started popping out.

"Elizabeth, we haven't had much time together as a couple. It's my work schedule that makes it hard." Sam complained.

"I agree with me working days and you working later, that doesn't leave much left for us. I was hoping we could find more time too." Elizabeth sighed.

"I don't know if I can get another job during the day or not with all the new business coming soon, but I like working for Bill and Lee." Sam looked down.

"Sam, if it's meant to be for us, we'll make it work. Don't give up. I really enjoy it when you're with me, it brightens my day. Little Jack likes you too."

"Elizabeth, let me talk to Bill. He is hiring Maggie Lipinski to take Rick's place so maybe I'll have some time off again soon." Sam gave Elizabeth a peck on her cheek, tipped his hat, and walked back to town.

When Bill walked Molly and Rosaleen home from the stagecoach stop, he asked Molly to stay outside so he could speak to her alone. Molly happily obliged and wondered what he was going to tell her.

"Molly, it seems to me that life is going fast and I'm no spring chicken. I feel we seem to get along well, don't you?" he asked.

"Why yes Bill, I enjoy our time together immensely. What are you worried about? Are you not feeling well?" Molly was concerned.

"I feel great! Molly, I just don't want to wait. Look, I mean, I'm ready to settle down, actually past ready, to well, uh..." he stopped his stammering and kissed Molly with a zest she hadn't expected. "Will you marry me?"

Molly couldn't believe her ears, she started to tear up, "Bill, you aren't playing with me, you do want to settle down?"

"Molly, if that kiss didn't tell you, let me tell you again," and he planted another steamy kiss on her!

"Say no more, Bill, YES, YES!" she exclaimed and kissed him right back.

Carson was ready to celebrate his last day as a bachelor. He knew the men in town could be pranksters and he didn't know what to expect. Faith told him she hoped he'd be in good shape for the wedding, so he went on his merry way with her words ringing in his ears.

As he walked in to Billees, there was the usual crowd of good men and all steadfast friends, but he was leery. He was greeted by "He's a jolly good fellow"! The usual fare of Bill's chili was cooking in the kitchen and smelled delicious, Lee had the Victrola working with lots of peppy tunes. What was different was the layout. Ned worked the blackjack and dice table and had a few men playing and laughing. Lee had the darts games going, and Bill had poker games with chips at a few tables.

It was help yourself style with the food, so the men could just fill up their bowls with chili or pour themselves a beer whenever they wanted. There were other foods like popcorn and peanuts to snack on. Nathan had brought over some of his Ma's popular German pretzels, enough for everyone to enjoy.

The night was enjoyable and at times quite rowdy with laughter and jokes, especially when they each took a turn telling a story about Carson. When Carson was busy studying his hand, Lee left for the back office. Bill joined him and helped Lee change his clothes into a fluffy, puffy-sleeved pink negligee. Underneath he wore one of Rosemary's brassiere's stuffed with rags. On his head he had a sequin-decorated headband with a feather sticking up from the side. He had bright red lipstick on and smeared some on his cheeks. Plus he had a satin rope tied around his waist to swing around. After he finished getting dressed with Bill laughing so much he had to cover his mouth through most of it, he got on a stepladder to get inside the huge fabric cake. When he crouched down, Bill put the top of the cake over Lee and wheeled it out to the main room.

Bill nodded at Nathan and he put on a swanky, sexy song. As Bill stopped the cake right in front of Carson, he grew several shades of red when asked to come over to cut the cake. He was hoping Ravenous Roxy was not going to pop out of the cake. As he went along with it, he was eyeing the door and calculating how long it would take him to make it outside. As he approached, out popped Lee who had to quickly cover himself up as he just about fell out of the cake if it wasn't for Bill who gave him his hand. Lee had everyone in stitches as he paraded around Carson, pushed him back down in his chair and slowly dragged his satin rope around Carson's face. Then he sat on Carson's lap and kissed him on the cheek leaving big red lipstick stains. Everyone was laughing so hard and Carson couldn't help but squeeze one of Lee's brassiere bumps. Lee couldn't wait to get his clothes back on so he left in his negligee to the back room to do just that.

Carson would never forget that night and neither would Lee!

The next morning was the wedding both Faith and Carson had been waiting for. Lee picked up Carson and Henry being the gentleman he always was, offered to pick up Faith with Molly to drive to the Church after Fiona had done their hair. Lee and Carson arrived first and waited in the back office while the guests arrived. Angela was playing the piano ever so beautifully.

Faith was so thrilled that her father arrived to walk her down the aisle. She was so grateful for Carson encouraging her to call him and make amends.

"Oh Dad, it's so sweet of you to come to my wedding, to give me away," she said as she greeted him.

"Honey, I wouldn't miss this for the world. You look beautiful!" as he kissed her on her cheek.

They hugged for quite a long time and they both had tears wishing that her mother had been alive to come.

When Angela began playing the Wedding March, Molly walked down the aisle and looked marvelous in her soft green dress and a yellow rose bouquet. Bill hadn't given Molly her engagement ring nor had they announced their engagement, but they were planning on doing so at the reception.

Down the aisle came the bride escorted by her father looking as dazzling as the yellow and red roses in her bouquet. Her father placed her hand in Carson's hand and tenderly kissed her on the cheek. Faith handed her bouquet to Molly.

As they stood before Pastor Joseph he read to them from Genesis, "So God created man in his own image, in the image of God he created him; male and female he created them. And God blessed them. Therefore a man shall leave his father and his mother and hold fast to his wife, and they shall become one flesh. And from Matthew 19:4-6 "'Haven't you read,' he replied, 'that at the beginning the Creator 'made them male and female,' and said, 'For this reason, a man will leave his father and mother and be united to his wife, and the two will become one flesh'? So they are no longer two, but one flesh. Therefore what God has joined together, let no one separate."

He spoke about the covenant between them and that it takes three in a marriage. Carson, Faith and God. As they looked at eachother and spoke their vows Faith eyes welled with tears as did Carson's when they exchanged rings.

Pastor Joseph gave them a final blessing, and finally Carson kissed Faith as Pastor announced let's celebrate the union of Faith and Carson Shepherd. Everyone clapped and followed the bride and groom in Carson's automobile with a "Just Married" sign on the back that drove them to the wedding dinner and reception at Billies that Sam and Maggie had cleaned and decorated according to Rosemary's instructions. Everything went just marvelously and the couple couldn't be happier. It was a certainly a day to remember.

Only the Beginning Chapter 5, Page 34

Faith and Carson's wedding reception was lively and fun! Almost all the town was there to celebrate, being that not only were the couple the town doctors, but very genuine people who cared about their people.

The first waltz came on the Victrola and Carson asked Faith to dance. They were so happy and they shone with love as they cascaded around the room whispering and giving kisses to each other from time to time. In short order, Faith's father asked Carson if he could cut in and dance with his daughter. The two of them were so involved in their talk that the men left them alone for that song. That's when Molly tapped on Carson's shoulder and asked him to dance. So it went until everyone was on the floor dancing.

The Chickadees came too in their lovely gowns and were having a great time dancing the fox trot, and waltzing. When Bill saw them, he made sure to stay away, so no shimmying tonight. Minnie, Dee, Clara, and Rosemary all came over to chat with the Chickadees and listen to Jane's jokes.

The Lipinskis and O'Neills were not part of the regular families yet, but Christy and Rick were invited. Faith and Carson had taken care of Christy when she was found in the hunter's cabin and nursed her back to health. Christy really appreciated her and Rick being included in their invitations to the reception. Faith had been so selfless encouraging the ladies to focus the shower on Christy and Christy realized how special she was. As was Carson, who looked after Timi Anne and made sure she was no longer jaundiced and putting on weight. So Christy and Rick were the first to acknowledge them in front of the whole crowd.

Ned took time to get everyone's attention again, as he toasted Carson with thanks for when he became so ill that they thought he might not recover. Thanks to Carson, his surgery was a big success and he was doing well.

Lee being the best man, raised a glass of champagne and he too offered thanks to the couple telling the story of when he was knocked out cold when a tree hit him in the wind storm. No one knew if he would make it. The care he received truly saved him.

Minnie thanked him for caring about Angela and having doctors like them in town made the town live up to it's name for they had hope!

Henry too spoke up about how they were always concerned about his blood pressure and all the stress he was under, cautioning him to take it easy and try to change his lifestyle.

Around the room the accolades continued. The couple tried to get them to stop, but no one would. The two were beaming by all the love shown to them.

Just to change things up a little bit, Bill got his voice nice and loud. "Everyone, and I mean everyone, even the shimmy gals," he laughed as he looked at the Chickadees' table, "may I have your attention please?"

Lee stopped the Victrola and quiet settled over the room.

Bill walked over to Molly and putting his arm around her, he announced, "This gorgeous, fiery redhead, Miss Molly Sullivan, has agreed to marry this old coot!" Applause thundered across the room. Congratulations and cheers were heard.

Then Lee asked, "Molly have you lost your mind?" but was already hugging her.

Nathan came up to Bill and remarked, "I knew you were going to finally see the light, Congratulations!"

Flo was already crying out of happiness for Molly, and Faith wondered why she didn't know, but they hugged Molly in a group hug.

"Okay, enough of Bill stealing our thunder," Carson chuckled, "I think if there's any bachelor's left, they might want to gather around to try to catch Faith's garter!"

With that, Faith sat down and after Carson quickly grabbed the garter and threw it up in the air. Who caught it? Everyone was looking to see. Sam! He blushed but Elizabeth smiled broadly.

Then it was the single ladies' turn. Faith flung her bouquet and Fiona caught it! Now, what did this mean, Fiona was startled. "Hmm," was all she said.

The 3-tiered strawberry cake with chocolate shavings that Emily of course, had baked was scrumptious. It was always fun to watch the bride and groom tease eachother with the slices to give the other, but Carson and Faith were straight shooters and opted to enjoy the cake without making a mess.

"Let's have more music!" Nathan said as Dee handed him his guitar. The two of them went on stage and sang a duet together as Carson and Faith danced. Of course, it was Dee and Nathan's song. 'Let me call you sweetheart'. Dee's voice was crystal clear and she carried every note to perfection. Nathan's voice was low and warm as he played his guitar. Their own wedding was just a short time ago and now here they were gazing at eachother, so in love, and waiting for their new little one just starting to grow to join them, but for now, the night was theirs.

Bill came on stage with his guitar and Molly too. The foursome blended wonderfully well together and the crowd enjoyed them immensely. The food was fantastic and the company even better. Another joyous wedding in Hope Valley!
