Falling Fury

Corporal Jack Hughes sat anxiously on the jerky airplane. He was apart of the 13th Airborne Division headed for Cherbourg. The other divisions were headed further inland to objectives such as Carentan and the infamous Pointe du Hoc.

Over the constant drone a voice signaled, "Men up!" In unison the soldiers stood up and held their hooks in front of their bodies. The same voice called, "Hook up!" Obediently they attached themselves to the stick rope above their heads. The jump master yelled, "Green light! Go!" Hughes held his breathe and lurched into the dark oblivion.

Jack landed in a field full of potatoes and began to immediately orientate himself. He looked for landmarks and found a church that was on his map. He was about thee hundred yards from the rally point.

As he was walking Jack heard a rustle in the bushes and he snapped, "Thunder!" A deep voice replied, "Flash."

Jack said, "Show yourself and identify soldier!"

The new soldier replied, "Private Tommy West second platoon Bravo Company sir."

Jack said, "Aye soldier. I am Corporal Jack Hughes first platoon Bravo Company as well. Follow me and keep your trap silent soldier." The big man nodded and set in pursuit. When the soldiers arrived to the rally point they were greeted and placed in their respective platoons.

The platoon NCO Sergeant Christopher Graves briefed, "Okay soldiers we are gonna be the spearhead. We will charge first and fast. We will set up a perimeter around the town while Charlie Company comes in from the east. Any questions?"

Jack Hughes was behind the man on point for the advance. When the town was in sight the sun was beginning to peep over the horizon, they had to hurry if they wanted to keep the element of surprise.

Twenty minutes later they received the command to attack. The man on point's head flew back obviously dead on contact. The bullets began to fly and the surprise was gone.

Jack gripped his Thompson and rushed towards an open window on a building. He dove through it and began motioning for more soldiers. After his squad was in he asked, "Where is our sergeant?"

Nobody answered. Jack put that in the back of his mind and took hold of the reigns, "Okay… We need four men upstairs to set up a base of fire out that window. The other six come with me." The men dispersed with no objection.

Hughes counted, "One… two… three!" The seven soldiers charged out into the open to the next building. When they opened the door two Germans shot around a corner from inside the house. Hughes raised his gun and put three rounds into one's chest and another soldier dropped the other with a shot to the head. Hughes shouted, "Three men clear upstairs!" The squad split up and Hughes went around the corner and found a wounded Nazi laying down bleeding. His fleshy arm was bleeding profusely and the man was silent, obviously in shock. Two shots from the Thompson exploded the man's skull, spraying flesh, blood, and brains everywhere. He stepped over the mess and regrouped with his squad downstairs.

"Okay let's hold these two buildings and let the other squads to set up their piece of perimeter. Three men up stairs and set up a defense. Three more down here, everyone grab a window.
