Chapter 11
Only the Beginning Chapter 11, Page 68
As planned, Nathan borrowed the Landoch wagon and rode out to the Peterson farm with his family. The day was another warm and sunny summer day. The ride in the country was so peaceful and the sweet scent of lilacs still clung to the air. Blue and white wildflowers dotted the landscape as they traveled in and out of the sun and shade taking in the sights.
The Petersons were expecting the Grants, so they had some cool lemonade ready to quench their thirst. Allie was so excited, that she drank her glass down in a jiffy.
"Allie's been really responsible about getting Penny fed and groomed." Dan complimented her with a hug.
"Yes, she doesn't miss a day. Even with it raining, she rides her bike here and tends to Penny" Gail added.
Allie left the adults to talk so she could greet her beloved Penny. She went about fetching the hay. It always smelled fresh and clean, just what Penny needed with a little bit of blended oat feed. Allie scrubbed out her water bucket and filled it with fresh cool water while Penny ate. Allie talked to her all about her family that was watching at the stable door.
"See how Allie is talking to Penny? Penny is getting used to the sound of Allie's voice. Every once in a while, she will begin to nicker when she hears her. The trust is building and I'm sure Penny knows that she's her girl." Dan proudly explained to Dee and Allie's grandparents.
Oma only had one horse left for Nathan, Ranger, when living on the farm. When they had cattle, Colleen and Nathan both had horses and would keep track of the cattle, rounding them up, but it was just too much for Emily when both of her grown children left the farm.
"I remember riding with Colleen on Sugar," Dee smiled as she shared the memories. "We used to ride to the swimming hole and cool off in the summer or Sugar would pull a sled in the winter and we'd take turns. It was so much fun!"
Nathan nodded. He was there too back in the day, as was Dee's brother, Walter. It was always great to have a horse! Looking back on it, he was more than glad, as the experience helped immensely when he was in training as a Mountie.
Nathan was a natural relating to horses. The bond with animals is more than special, it is unique and nothing can replace it so Nathan treasured Newton. If Newton could talk, he'd verify that, after all, they were best friends. Newton knew everything, sometimes even before Dee did as he often got an earful every morning or late at night on rounds.
Dan guided Emily and Archie to some bales of hay to sit on as they couldn't stop smiling while they continued watching Allie interact with Penny. "Penny is such a good-looking filly!" Archie crowed.
"Yes, and Allie is so happy, it makes me tickled pink, ya?" Emily patted Archie's hand.
When Penny finished eating, Allie went into the stall with Penny and closed the stall door behind her all the time talking calmly to Penny. She walked always on the left side of Penny by her shoulder and slowly reached up to her and patted Penny on that side of her neck. Penny turned her head to see Allie, so she gave a little affectionate scratch on her withers. Penny liked that, so that's when Allie put on Penny's halter which had a lead shank attached to it.
Nathan watched her holding his breath, but Allie was calm and confident. Allie opened the stall door and always went out first as she was told. Dan had shown her well. He told her that it was very important that Allie go through first with Penny behind her. If they went through together, and something would spook Penny she could crush Allie against the doorway. Also, it's a matter of respect. Allie then led Penny out to the pasture with the gate closed and removed the halter so Penny could run and play.
Allie returned to her family and the Petersons grinning from ear to ear, very proud of herself and how she handled Penny. "Isn't she just the prettiest horse around? I'm so proud of her too!"
"Yes, she is!" Nathan hugged Allie tightly, "you are doing wonderful and I'm so proud of you. I knew you would enjoy her and take on the responsibility, just like your mom did."
Dee agreed and nodded, "Newton will enjoy your young filly too, I bet."
Nathan turned to Dan and Gail, "I can't thank you enough for helping Allie learn how to care for her horse. She's seen me with Newton plenty of times, but she never had the responsibility of caring for him."
"It's been our pleasure. She's going to make a wonderful horsewoman. It's in her genes, we can tell." Gail assured Nathan.
"Please let me know what I owe you, board, feed, what you need, anything. I appreciate this very much! This has been a dream of Allie's and mine. I just can't thank the both of you enough!" Nathan grasped Dan's hands in his and hugged Gail.
"It's fine. We're happy she's going to a good home. Soon, Allie will be training Penny, starting by lunging her and teaching her voice commands. Right now she's just about ready. As you can see, Penny seems to trust her and that's what we needed to establish first" Dan acknowledged.
The Grants didn't want to keep Dan and Gail much longer as they had farm work to do, but first Nathan and Allie wanted the rest of their family to see the new foal. The mare was very protective of her little one, but she didn't mind them all just looking over the stable door.
Archie whistled softly, "He's a beaut!"
"Dark as night!" Dee added.
"We've been thinking of naming him after the book, "Black Beauty," Gail shrugged, "why not?"
"Perfect!" Nathan confirmed, "I like that!"
The Grants got in the wagon and happily drove back home, ready to have Sunday dinner soon.
Only the Beginning Chapter 11, Page 69
Molly and Bill enjoyed their Sunday afternoon by the pond just talking about their upcoming wedding in the fall. Looking around at the clear blue water and the trees blowing in the wind, Molly thought it just might be nice to have an outdoor reception. Although fall can bring cold weather, most of the time in Hope Valley it was typically warm enough to enjoy the outdoors still, especially with the beautiful colors of autumn.
"Bill, what would you think about having our reception outside?" Molly surprised Bill with this suggestion. Bill was always the practical one and he was, if nothing else, boringly sensible.
He squished his face in a grimace and looked at Molly puzzled. "Molly, dear, what made you think of that?"
Molly giggled. "Bill, why not? It's beautiful that time of year. The colors are simply stunning and we usually have warm weather in September. I think we should break the mold and do something new and fun!"
Bill shook his head and laughed. "Dear, this is going to be new and fun whether we have our reception inside or outside. Think about it, what happens if it rains?"
Molly wasn't giving up, she wanted a fall wedding reception outside to enjoy her favorite season. "Bill is that so hard to figure out, then we go inside to Billees!"
Bill just shrugged. "If this makes you happy dear, then that's what we'll do. I just want to get married and for you to be joyful," he reassured Molly sealing his agreement with a kiss.
Molly gladly surrendered to Bill's kiss. As she slowly pulled away, she rested her head on his shoulder and asked if he knew who he wanted to ask to be his best man. Bill did not hesitate a second, "Nathan of course!"
"I thought so. I'd like to have Flo, but I thought that it would be best if I asked Rosaleen. She's not only my daughter but also my best friend." Molly shared her thoughts with Bill. She didn't want to slight Flo, but she hoped Flo would understand.
"Honey, if you want, ask both of them. That way you'll make all of you happy. I could ask Lee and we'll have two groomsmen and two bridesmaids. There, that's solved." Bill was quite pleased that was settled.
"Oh Bill, what would I do without you? You always have an answer. I love you!" This time she surprised him with a kiss which he eagerly accepted.
"I hate to say it, but I have an errand to take care of Molly. Can I come by later, maybe we can have dinner together?" Bill asked with anticipation.
"Of course, Rosaleen and I will be expecting you," and with that Bill held out his hand as Molly accepted it and they walked hand in hand to her house.
After seeing Molly home, Bill went over to Elizabeth's house. She was playing in the backyard with Jack bouncing a ball. Bill walked around and said hello. Little Jack dropped the ball and ran to the gate. "Uncle Bill!" Jack was so excited as he lifted his arms wanting to be picked up.
"Come here, little man!" Bill hugged him and held him tight. "What are you and mommy doing?"
"Playing ball, do you want to?" Jack looked at Bill face to face with a big smile.
"Yes sir, why do you think I came over?" Bill laughed. After a few ball tosses back and forth, Elizabeth brought out some milk and cookies. "For me too?" Bill smiled.
"Yes, Uncle Bill, you too." Elizabeth smiled. "Now, what brings you here?"
"Just seeing how my friend is doing. I haven't seen you around. Not for the bonfire Friday night, or yesterday. Then after church, you left in a hurry. Is everything all right?" Bill showed his concern as he carefully watched Elizabeth's reaction. Elizabeth looked away.
"Cat's got your tongue?" Bill persisted.
Elizabeth got up hesitantly and went inside. Bill just sat there waiting and keeping his eye on Jack until she returned with something in her hand and handed it to him. Bill looked at the envelope and then back at Elizabeth. "Do you want me to read this?" he inquired as he examined the envelope.
"Yes," Elizabeth whispered as if she didn't want anyone to hear.
Bill examined the envelope and there was no writing on it. No return address, nothing. "How did you get this?" he was definitely in his investigative mode.
"Hand-delivered by a man, a rather dirty stranger who took off as fast as he could. I don't know who he was." Elizabeth swallowed hard.
This mystery was demanding him to open up the envelope. As he did, he reached for the letter inside and unfolded it. The contents divulged a threat. The sender had information on Tom Thornton, something that he could hold over him if his demands were not met. It had been since Elizabeth's and Jack's wedding when she had last seen his brother, Tom. Back then she knew he was a traveling tire salesman and rode into Hope Valley in a new car, but she hadn't heard from him after. Now he was in trouble. She needed to help Jack's brother but didn't know how. The sender was warning her that if she didn't give him money from Jack's Mountie pension, then Elizabeth might not ever see Tom again, at least not alive.
"This is serious Elizabeth! Why didn't you tell Nathan or come to me? This person is going to expect you to respond. You just can't ignore this!" Bill was quite upset with her.
"I am afraid for Tom. I want to help, but I don't have that much money, I need to provide for my son. So, I'm asking you now for help!" Elizabeth started to cry. She sobbed uncontrollably in Bill's arms until she heard little Jack ask his mommy what was wrong.
"Elizabeth, you are going to be all right. I want to keep this and show it to Nathan as soon as he gets home. Don't you worry. We will get to the bottom of this." Bill was firm and convincing.
"Oh, thank you, Bill! I just know Jack sent you to us," as she gave him a tight hug.
"Would you like to come to Molly's later for dinner? I'm sure she'll be very happy." Bill suggested. "Wait, no need to answer. I'll come by and pick you two up later. Meanwhile, just relax, we've got this!"
Only the Beginning Chapter 11, Page 70
There was an immediate sense for Nathan to go on rounds as quickly as possible this morning. The stolen lumber and the box of money had been on his mind but he put his family first on Sunday and left his worries on the back burner with God.
Today, he needed to pursue the mystery behind these discoveries. Newton was totally in tune with Nathan and was trotting as quietly as possible. As he headed back out to the country, he first rode past the cabin in the woods where he had seen the two men go in. Coming in from a different direction, he walked Newton slowly in the perimeter with a keen eye. He searched the ground for any tracks or clues. He confirmed horse hoof prints and closer to the cabin, footprints.
Being careful, he tied Newton to a tree and gave his buddy a pat telling him to be quiet. Checking for his revolver, he proceeded to dart over to the cabin. He listened intently but heard nothing, so he continued. As he ran to the cabin and stood flat against the outside wall next to a window. His hand gripped his gun while listening again for any noise. Nothing. Knowing he needed to see inside, he cautiously bent down and slowly peered in the window. No one was inside. Still not putting his gun away, he turned the doorknob and was able to walk right in. The cabin was essentially the way it had been when he found Christy, but there were definite signs of the men who he saw entering in there before. Looking around he scrutinized the room making mental notes and details of what he found.
It was clear to him that the men were sleeping there, with two pillows and blankets on the unkempt bed. Grungy clothes lay crumpled on the floor. Remains of food were dried up and left in pans and bowls along with mugs of cold, slimy coffee sitting on the table. The smell was nasty and he seemed to have scared a mouse back in its corner. Nathan kicked around the clothes looking for any clues to no avail. On the table though, was paper, the same type of paper Bill had seen in the box they unearthed. He and Bill were wondering why Wyman Walden and Lucas Bouchard's names were on that paper. Not seeing any new clues, he first looked out the window to check for anyone nearby, and then took off to the woods and back to Newton. He gave Newton a giddy-up, to take off and they flew faster this time.
Nathan wanted to check on the site of his and Dee's new house. As he arrived, he heard some cracking of branches. He stopped and listened. The cracking noises were coming closer, so he stayed still in the saddle. Soon he heard voices. The men were talking between themselves while riding in from the east. Nathan couldn't see clearly with the sunrise in his eyes, so he drew out his gun as they approached closer and closer. Then to his relief, he heard Joseph call out to him in a loud and warm greeting, "Good morning, General Grant!"
Instantly, Nathan put his gun back and let out a sigh of relief. "Good morning to you too Joseph and Bob, it's good to see you both!" was Nathan's understatement of the morning. "Just checking on how the house is coming along. Any more trouble with missing lumber?"
"No, not since that time you were here a few days ago. The house is coming along as planned." Joseph reassured Nathan. "However, we're expecting several loads any day now for Lee's house which will be several acres away from here. Bob will be overseeing that building when the materials arrive."
"Have you seen any other lumber deliveries nearby?" Nathan inquired.
"Well, Rick is working as foreman over at the Mercantile with Lee showing him the trade and what to do," Bob spoke up. "Oh, and Fr. Ricardo should be getting a huge load of lumber for the Church sometime this week from Union City." Joseph nodded. "There will be lots of lumber too, with the expansion of the school," Bob added.
Nathan looked around, "What about the new row houses, when do you expect those to begin being built?"
"Anytime now, before winter sets in."
Nathan nodded in appreciation for their help, "Thanks, I'll let you get to work with your crew on my house," he smiled. "Keep on the lookout for anything suspicious."
With that, Nathan rode Newton further into the country. Next, he went to the land where he had first spotted those men at the campfire. They weren't there, so he trotted over to the grove of trees and after some inspection spotted the lumber, but no wagon. Apparently, they unloaded the lumber, covered it with tall grass and shrubs, and left with the wagon. But where?
As Nathan rode Newton around the rest of their rounds his mind was going as fast as Newton was. What did Bouchard and Walden have to do with these two men? The cash? The lumber? Just what were they up to? When Nathan arrived back in town he took Newton to the livery and watered and groomed him, gave him a carrot, and told his buddy to relax, he'd be back.
Bill had seen Nathan come into town and was waiting outside of the RCMP office for him. The closer Nathan came he noticed Bill was uneasy pacing on the boardwalk.
Bill greeted him with, "Any news?"
"Looks like you are chomping at the bit to tell me some!" Nathan picked up on Bill's anxiety. "C'mon in."
Bill had brought with him a cup of coffee for Nathan and the two of them sat down at Nathan's desk after Nathan hung up his hat and took a good long sip of the brew. He took out his notebook to write down details.
"Nathan, you talk to me first, then I'll share my news. We need to focus on one thing at a time." Bill suggested.
"You sure? You look like the cat who just ate the canary!" he chuckled. "I just got back from rounds. I checked on the house site and nothing new there. However, I was able to get into the cabin and those men are definitely sleeping there." Nathan continued to explain to Bill in detail what he saw.
"That's pretty much what I expected," Bill remarked.
Nathan nodded in agreement. "I went to my house site and Joseph and Bob were coming into work. Nothing there has been taken since we were there. They did tell me that lots of lumber deliveries were to be expected this week or next. When Then, I went to the campsite, the men weren't there either, but the wagon was gone and the lumber that was in it was on the ground covered by tall grass and shrubs. Seems to me, I'll have to train my new recruit fast, as I'll be needing his help!" Nathan said emphatically.
"When do you expect him?" Bill asked.
"Any day now. So, Bill, what was it that has you so anxious?" Nathan inquired.
"Elizabeth," Bill answered. "There's trouble."
Only the Beginning Chapter 11, Page 71
Sitting stunned, Nathan put his cup of coffee down and stared at Bill. "What is this trouble you're eluding to with Elizabeth?"
Bill reached over to Nathan and handed him the letter Elizabeth had received while informing him that she had it hand-delivered from a stranger. Nathan quickly read it and was instantly upset that she hadn't told him when he knocked on her door Friday night. "What was she thinking? She should've said something to me right away."
"Don't let this go to your head, but honestly Nathan if you don't realize it by now, I'll have to tell you straightforward. Elizabeth is regretting leaving you for Lucas. It is plainly obvious that she loved you all along. She just couldn't accept the fear of possibly losing you like she lost Jack, so she settled for Lucas." Bill started.
"Wait, I'm married to my lovely wife, Dee. We are expecting our first child. Bill, I have felt the baby kick! Do you know how incredible that is?" Nathan just couldn't believe that Elizabeth was still pining for him, as he had a wonderful wife and a new life. He shook his head as he asked, "What does that have to do with her not telling me about the letter?"
"She's a woman." Bill chuckled, then realizing this was not a time to joke, "Seriously, Elizabeth and I are great friends, and I'm Jack's Godfather. She feels comfortable with me, we're like family. With you, well, she has to hide her feelings. Rosemary told me as much. I guess they had a heart-to-heart talk and apparently Elizabeth admitted she was a fool."
"Well, anyway, she made her choice, and so did I, it's over. Now, getting back to the letter, we know Tom is in trouble and now Elizabeth is being threatened to hand over money or Tom's life is in jeopardy. Knowing Elizabeth, she would never allow Tom to be blackmailed. Who is demanding this?" Nathan asked.
"It isn't signed. Elizabeth hasn't heard anything since, but no doubt it won't be long," Bill informed, "so out of fear, Elizabeth has been keeping to herself."
"That's the problem, we have to get her out of the house, so we can watch her from a distance like a secret bodyguard would, and hopefully this stranger will approach her so we will be there to apprehend him. He will have to tell us who he is working for." Nathan was thinking out loud with Bill.
"Nathan, you can call Headquarters and see if there have been any shenanigans that Tom has been involved with. Check if they have any records of criminal activity. As far as we know, Tom is still out somewhere selling tires. This could all be just a set-up." Bill sat back in his chair and the two of them bounced ideas off of each other.
Nathan made the phone call to Headquarters presenting his inquiry asking for any information or records of Thomas Thornton. When he explained his reasoning for the inquiry, the young man on the other end of the telephone identified himself as the recruit that would be coming to join him, Mountie Gunther Burmeister. Nathan informed Gunther who he was speaking with. "I see that they have you doing office duty."
"Yes, sir," Gunther answered.
"When is your assignment to Hope Valley?" Nathan inquired.
"I'm traveling the day after tomorrow, sir. I expect to be there in 3 days, sir." Gunther was quite attentive and tried to make a good impression.
"Mountie Burmeister, I need you to follow through with my request before you leave. You must see to this matter promptly." Nathan ordered.
"You can count on me, sir," Gunther affirmed.
"I'll be expecting your return call, thank you," Nathan concluded.
Looking at Bill, after hanging up, he started to chuckle. "With a name like Gunther Burmeister, Ma will have him eating us out of house and home with her German dishes!"
"You sure had him jumping!" Bill joined in with the laughter. "That's good, think what we went through when we were that green!"
Bill and Nathan talked further about taking turns protecting Elizabeth. Bill would encourage her to leave her house and make her presence known in town. They certainly didn't want her out there at night, but Bill or Nathan was usually around during the day. "She'll need to call one of us to let us know when she's leaving her house to come to town. That stranger might just come back to her house again too." Nathan added.
"By the way, Bill, did you discover who owns the land where the two men buried that box?" Nathan furrowed his brows as he asked.
"Unfortunately, that area is in a different district than I have access to. I will have to inquire further. I just haven't gotten out from under all the land sale paperwork I am recording, and then this blackmail threat that Elizabeth is being subjected to, has me focusing on her too." Bill sighed.
"Listen, Nathan, I want to change the subject, to something that I will be very honored, that is, if you would agree to be my Best Man at our wedding," Bill asked with a grin that showed his deep dimples and a broad smile.
"Best man? You bet! I'm glad you finally have a woman that agreed to be your wife!" Nathan joshed Bill as he slapped his shoulder.
Bill shook hands with Nathan, but the two best friends gave in to a hug. "This is going to be one humdinger of a wedding! I'm going to have to get my dancing boots out for your bachelor party!" Nathan roared with laughter. "I owe you big time!"
Only the Beginning, Chapter 11, Page 72
Before Bill left Nathan, he told him that the currency he took from the stack of rolled cash they discovered in the steel box, was indeed authentic. So, they concluded that probably those two men didn't want to be paying for lumber, most likely because they needed that money for something else. Bill was leaving to talk to Elizabeth and told Nathan he'd be letting him know about their discussion. Just as Bill was getting ready to leave, Lee came.
"Hi Bill, Nathan, can I speak with you both now please?" Lee was definitely upset and angry. Their friend was not his usual happy-go-lucky self and his demeanor showed it. Bill decided to stay and Nathan nodded approvingly. Both Lee and Bill sat down across from Nathan.
Lee spoke up, "Nathan, there's been more lumber stolen. Not from your house site, but at mine now. I just came back from there and luckily no one was hurt like Leroy because Bob was careful not to allow anyone near the stack until he first closely observed and tried to count the lumber. It was painstakingly slow, but better to be safe than sorry, and sure enough, there was quite a bit of lumber missing again!" he sighed.
"Lee, I haven't had a chance to tell you, but I found where the lumber from my house is. Bill has helped me track two men I found suspicious in the Cafe. I spotted them while doing rounds out in the country. They left a campfire and Bill went with me on rounds the next morning. That's when you told us about the stolen lumber. Someone had hauled the lumber by wagon. The tracks went only so far, and then the dirt was too hard to leave any." Nathan informed him.
Bill spoke up, "There's a connection we're trying to figure out here Lee, but it's Mountie Police business and we can't go into detail, but these two men are quite probably the thieves." Bill shook his head.
"Yes, we can't prove anything now, but we know where the lumber is, and I left it there so I or I should say we" as he nodded towards Bill, "can catch them in the act. We also know where they are probably sleeping, so it's all about timing." Nathan explained.
"There's more to this situation, but let's say, it has to do with money and men that have left this town quite unwelcome!" Lee nodded looking at Bill as if he could read his mind.
Lee caught on, "You know there are more deliveries going out this week to various places. So, what's the plan?"
"Your part is to keep a detailed list of inventories of each delivery. Have someone that is not employed by you witness and sign the receipt. Whoever orders the materials, should always be present at the site from now on. We need to keep this quiet, among us and your foremen only. I don't want this spread throughout Hope Valley as that will stop the thieves and we need to apprehend them." Nathan urged.
"The rest is up to us. Please let us know if you see anyone suspicious in town too," Bill added looking at Nathan, but Nathan didn't say anymore knowing Bill was alluding to Elizabeth's situation.
Lee shook his head, "Damn, I just hope this is settled before too long, we have so many orders to fill and lots to build during the warm months."
The three men talked about all the new people coming into town looking for work and trying to keep on their toes who's who. Nathan was happy to share that he had a trainee, Mountie Gunther Burmeister coming in 3 days. While discussing this, "There's no room left at Billees, so he might as well stay with me," Bill offered.
"No doubt he'll be scared to breathe at your place!" Lee laughed.
"He can escape over at my house. He'll love Ma's cooking, I can almost guarantee that! I won't be able to have any time to myself." Nathan chuckled.
Bill looked straight at Lee, "I know you have to get back to the job site, but as long as you are here, I do want to ask you something very important to me, Lee, I'd like you to be a groomsman at my wedding. Would you do me the honor?"
"I thought you'd never ask," Lee crowed! "Yes, I'd be honored, thank you, Bill."
Nathan stood up, "Well, it's you and me, we've got to plan this bachelor party to beat all parties known to mankind!" he warned Lee as he stared at Bill, all of them bursting out loud with laughter.
Bill had to escape, "I'm leaving now, but we'll talk soon to make plans," and with that, he walked out the door.
Lee looked at Nathan, "Just so you know, I expect an order next to be delivered to the Cafe for their expansion. I'll let Rick know enough for him to be on the lookout. Joseph will be there at the night of course, so hopefully, we'll be able to catch these guys!"
Nathan knew Lee was right. This could be it, but would the thieves be brazen enough to steal in town? He'd have to make sure he was there after dusk when the load was delivered.
Molly had picked up Rosaleen at the library, and they both went over to Dottie's Apparel, to talk to Dottie about a wedding dress for her, and a bridesmaid dress for Rosaleen. It had to be ordered soon, to be on time. She had already asked Flo too who was going to be her Matron of Honor. Flo, being Molly's all-time best friend, was delighted, and was going to join them as soon as she had Allie there to handle the switchboard.
Dottie asked what color Molly would be wearing. Molly thought for a moment, and answered, "Of course, I would never choose white, but I'm not sure. What do you suggest?"
Flo came in just then and excitedly joined in. "Oh Molly, you look stunning in green. It'll match your emerald engagement ring, and highlight those eyes!"
"Perfect," Rosaleen agreed, "mom, that's a great suggestion!"
"Green it is!" Molly grinned, "what is available for a bride to wear in green?" Molly was very certain it would not be too popular.
Looking through the catalog, one dress, in particular, stood out. "This is the one! I'll need a wrap for my shoulders or Fr. Ricardo will disapprove, but it's so lovely. Would this be available by September?" Molly asked hopefully.
"I will inquire about this right away." Dottie nodded. "Now, we need all of your ladies' measurements and as soon as we choose the other two dresses, I'll put the order in!" With that Molly, Flo, and Rosaleen squealed with delight!
Only the Beginning Chapter 11, Page 73
Nathan came home hanging up his hat and taking off his boots. He knew better, as the ladies did not appreciate dirt and horse dung in the house. "Hello Ma how are you?" he asked as he gave her a peck on her cheek.
"Just fine Nathan, what about you, you're working a lot lately. Everything all right?" Emily asked.
"Nothing for your pretty little head to worry about Ma. Do you know where Dee is?"
"Upstairs. Dinner will be ready in 30 minutes." Emily called after Nathan while he was running up two stairs at a time. When he reached their bedroom door, he beheld the light of his life sitting at the desk. He tiptoed inside, but she had already heard him bounding up the stairs, so she quickly turned around making a funny face at him and spoiling his surprise.
"Dang woman, you're too fast for me!" he teased her as she stood spreading her arms wide to give him a warm welcome sealed with a kiss.
"What has you so wound up?" her eyes darted across his face looking for a clue.
"There's something that I need to share with you." He grabbed her hand and led her over to the bed to sit. She listened to him intently as her curiosity got her attention. He walked over and shut the door.
"This must be important Nathan! I always worry about you, but I trust God to protect you and bring you home to me." she said in all sincerity.
"Thank you darling, I have a beautiful faith-filled wife, but I think God's got this, he chuckled. "I want you to not worry, so that's why I'm telling you that there's someone threatening Elizabeth. Bill and I don't know who yet, but they're blackmailing her with something they're holding over Tom Thornton." Nathan started.
"Tom Thornton? Is he related to Elizabeth Thornton?" Dee's eyes reflected the puzzlement.
"Yes, Tom is Jack's brother, Elizabeth's brother-in-law. He's had some minor incidents with the law, quite opposite of Jack, but nothing serious. At least as far as Bill and I know. I'm waiting for RCMP headquarters to return my inquiry as to anything he might have been involved with recently. Hopefully, that will shed some light as to who or why someone can be in the position to blackmail her." Nathan was trying not to alarm Dee, but he wanted her to know why he would be watching Elizabeth.
"How does she know what they want? Did she get a telephone call or a letter?" Dee was very concerned for Elizabeth.
"No, she actually was delivered a letter by a messenger. Someone nearby brought it to her home. That explains why we haven't seen much of her recently. She wouldn't tell me, but she did tell Bill after he persisted. The two of us will be watching for anyone new in town." Nathan explained.
"So, of course, you need to keep an eye on her for safety sake too," Nathan was relieved she accepted what he was going to be doing. "I understand. How are you going to tell who is who with all the new hires working for Lee and Henry now?"
"I'm not sure but, Bill will be talking to Elizabeth to see if she can get a general description of the man who delivered the message. If not, I think we might have to have a town hall meeting at Billees to welcome the newer hires so we know. Maybe we can flush the man out. I'll be talking to Fiona about this and see what she suggests."
"You know sweetheart, there are so many new faces that I think that's a great idea. We all need to meet these people and get to know who they are. I hope Fiona agrees to this." Dee nodded her head in agreement.
Nathan changed out of his serge and into more comfortable clothes. "What were you doing when I interrupted you?"
"It's time for our summer Bible camp for the children under Minnie's direction. I volunteered to help along with Elizabeth, and Rosemary too. So, I'm writing my plans as to songs to teach, Elizabeth and Minnie are writing up the lessons, and Rosemary will be helping with their skits. Tomorrow, we will be meeting, and I want to ask the Chickadees who wants to help with the crafts, snacks, games and so forth." Dee's eyes sparkled with this new venture.
"That should be fun. You ladies always come up with the most clever and interesting ideas, that's for sure, especially those Chickadees!" Nathan chuckled.
They heard Emily call to come down for dinner. Allie had set the table, so they were able to sit right down. Nathan held hands with Allie and Dee as he said grace thanking the Lord for their bountiful blessings and asking for protection. As usual, Emily cooked a delicious dinner of pork chops and boiled potatoes with carrots. Dee was so grateful to have someone cook as she enjoyed learning new dishes, as they often worked side by side now during the summer months when she was no longer busy with teaching.
"Ma, I've got some news for you. In a few days, we are expecting a new Mountie. He is a recruit who has his basic training completed and will now be working with me for his first assignment." Nathan began.
"Is he cute?" Allie asked.
Nathan grimaced, "Allie I never met him and besides I don't know the criteria you have for being considered cute," he shook his head.
"As I was saying, he'll be here working with me, but staying with Bill."
"Ach du lieber!," Emily laughed, "Bill will scare the poor boy away!"
"Ma, first, he's not a boy, and second, Bill will be a great mentor." Nathan nodded affirmatively. Dee and Allie snickered.
"Listen up ladies, his name is Gunther Burmeister."
"A good German lad, I'm all for this young man to come here for dinner. I'll make sure he isn't homesick, ya!" Emily crowed.
Nathan laughed; his eyes gleaming. Dee laughed out loud, and Allie giggled. This was going to be an interesting summer for sure!
Only the Beginning Chapter 11, Page 74
Bob Landoch was up at 4:30 am and went to Lee's new house site. As he approached the area at the crack of dawn he heard some horses snorting. Stopping to look and listen he had a sense of uneasiness about him. As he scanned the land, he thought he saw something far away near the woods. It looked like something moving but he wasn't sure if that was where the horse sounds were coming from. Whatever was out there was going farther into the woods just barely a shadow now. He should've brought his rifle with him, but he didn't think he would need it. Next time, for sure he told himself. He wasn't going to ride out to find whatever it was he saw, not without his rifle. Besides, he thought, it was probably nothing.
Bob got off his horse and tethered it to a nearby tree. Still keeping his eyes wide open he approached the lumber, taking a step, looking, and then taking another step, repeating himself until he got to the stack of lumber, nails, and other materials. He was ever so cautious not to make hardly any noise as he checked out the materials. He had a list of lumber in his leather saddle bag that he had grabbed along with a pencil. Now, he separated the stacks into sizes and counted. He thought that the lumber was untouched but quickly changed his mind thinking that several planks were missing. He bit his lip and clenched his jaw, not again he shook his head. Double-checking his count, he realized that indeed lumber was stolen!
What the hell? Was what he spotted far out near the woods just a little while ago, would that have been the thieves? Bob didn't waste any time, he mounted his horse and took off towards the woods, rifle or no rifle. He rode as fast as he could and when his horse took him into the woods, it was dark and hard to see now. Bob slowed his horse down and looked for any clues in the dirt. The dirt in the forest was moist and soft. There were all different prints from coyotes, wolves, rabbits and, then he spotted the wagon wheel tracks. Following the trail, it would stop and start, but eventually, it led out of the woods and the imprints stopped in the sun-baked hard dirt of the field. Bob galloped back to town to go to the row houses. He waited outside of Lee and Rosemary's house, waiting for a sign of life. Then, he saw Nathan leaving his house and Bob stopped him, telling Nathan what just happened out by Lee's parcel. Nathan advised Bob to wake up Lee and fill him in on what happened. Nathan would be meeting them out there while doing rounds.
Nathan went into Newton's stable and greeted him with quick grooming. He gave him fresh water and fed him. "Today's going to be another busy day, Newt, so we need to be ready for anything. Okay, boy?"
As he left the livery, Bill crossed the street in front of him. Nathan stopped and told Bill to come over to the RMCP office for a quick update. "Already?" Bill was puzzled.
"Yes, just this morning, Bob Landoch went out to Lee's parcel. He thought he heard horses snorting. Not having his rifle with him, he stayed and counted the lumber. Sure enough, there was some missing. That's when he went out to the area where he thought he saw something. Once in the woods, he did see wagon wheel tracks but they led back out to the field where the tracks were no longer visible. He rode back to tell Lee, so I left him there to get a hold of Lee.
"Are you heading out now?" Bill asked.
"Yes, I'll meet them there," Nathan asked.
"I'm going to talk to Fiona right now and request a town meeting tomorrow night. There's just too much uncertainty and we have to know who's who." Bill nodded.
Bill was already speaking with Fiona in a few minutes about calling a town meeting. He explained to her that his request was warranted by several situations that could be dangerous for the town. In strict confidence, he explained to her that someone was trying to blackmail Elizabeth, and there was lumber stolen from Nathan's and Lee's new home sights. Fiona agreed, this was imperative so she would tell everyone she saw and the business owners to pass the word around. Bill went over to his office and wrote up a few posters alerting the folks to come to the Meet and Greet town hall meeting tomorrow evening at Billees.
As Nathan rode out to the parcels of land he stopped by the cabin to see if the men were there. He approached slowly and cautiously with his pistol by his side. He saw no signs of the men or their horses so he continued out to meet Lee and Bob.
Lee was angry and as nice and kind as he usually was, when he was angry, his temper was just as apparent as his good side. "Nathan, we have to find these thieves pronto! I can't afford these losses!"
"I understand Lee, I've already called Gabe in Brookfield about giving me a hand. He's been fortunate, nothing has been happening up there, so he'll be here tomorrow." Nathan was trying to reassure him.
"Tomorrow, the big delivery for the Cafe and Canfield residence is expected. I'm hoping it being right in town that it won't be messed with." Lee shook his head.
"In the evening, Bill is asking Fiona for a town meeting so we can meet who all the new hires are. We're hoping to flush out any strangers. You'll need to give her a list of your employees. Right now, I need you and Bob to make a list of what was delivered and what is here right now. Who signed for the lumber?" Nathan inquired.
"I did," Lee replied. "I also signed a receipt for your lumber too. Will that be a problem when we press charges?" Lee was worried this wouldn't hold up in court.
"That's something you'll have to talk to Bill about. Meanwhile, I'm going to continue on my rounds and check out areas I think the thieves might be," with that Nathan left for the campsite.
He thought for sure he'd find those two men there, but they weren't there either. The first stack of lumber was still behind the grove of trees the way Nathan saw it last. He scratched his head, "Newton, just where are they now?" he asked his buddy.
Back in town, the ladies were all gathering at the Cafe. The Chickadees were always a fun, loving group. Mary and Anne had officially joined, and Dee, Rosemary, and even Elizabeth were all there. Elizabeth wasn't going to join in, but Bill encouraged her to get out and see some friends which did sound appealing, so she gave in and came. Minnie called the group to order after they enjoyed some coffee, tea, and Emily's popular scones.
"Ladies, we are hosting a summer Bible Camp for the children. Pastor Joseph and Fr. Ricardo will be coming too, leading us in prayer and joining in games! This is what we have planned so far. Elizabeth and I will be preparing lessons for the little ones, Rosemary will create skits to go along with the Bible stories and lessons, and Dee will choose the songs to teach them. Now, if any of you would be so kind as to help with other things, we'd really appreciate it!"
"What other things are you thinking about?" Marie asked.
"Crafts, games, snacks, and an end-of-the-week dinner with the parents," Minnie advised.
"Oh, this will be so fun!" Joyce exclaimed. "I'll help wherever you need me."
"Me too, I'd like to help with crafts," Teresa offered. Margaret joined in with Teresa offering to help.
"I know a lot of games," Jane spoke up. "I'll help her," Janice nodded.
Fiona offered to play the flute when Dee taught the songs. Allie, Angela, and Karen had already volunteered to help Dee too.
Mary said she would keep track of snacks and help organize the end-of-the-week dinner with Diane. Soon all the others were offering to help in one way or another. Minnie looked around at the ladies and gave God a big thank you as she looked up.

Lee and Rosemary were at home with Paul eating dinner and verbalizing how their day went for them. Lee was still angry about the stolen lumber and complained that if this happened again, they would have to stop deliveries until the thief or thieves were apprehended. "Rosemary, I can't keep on absorbing the cost of the lumber or we'll not be able to continue."
Rosemary looked at her plate and played with her food not knowing what to say to console her husband. She rarely saw him this upset thank goodness, and poor Paul had never seen this side of his father.
Looking at Paul, Rosemary changed the subject altogether and asked her son how he felt about attending the summer Bible camp that she was helping plan. "I guess, as long as the other boys are going. I still want to be in baseball though."
"Certainly Paul," Lee snapped out of his slump and turned his attention to Paul, "when is your next practice?"
"Two days, dad, are you coming?" Paul asked, smiling broadly.
"I wouldn't miss it, of course." Lee grinned.
Rosemary felt relieved that Lee snapped out of his misery. "Lee, we are having a wonderful time planning the summer Bible Camp. All the ladies that were at the Cafe, plus the Chickadees, offered to help in one way or another. It's going to be so fun for the children."
"Let me guess," Lee chuckled, "you offered to be in charge of the plays."
"No, not plays darling, skits." Rosemary chided him. "We don't have time for plays. Plays need weeks if not months to practice lines, make scenery, and" ...
Paul laughed. "Mom, that's what's so fun about you. You make every day a play!"
Lee burst out laughing. "You know it Paul!" even though Rosemary scowled. She couldn't keep that scowl long at all before she was laughing along with her two favorite 'boys'.
"Seriously, Paul, your mother was on stage for several years as Rosemary LeVeaux and came to be known as quite an accomplished actress!" Lee smiled gallantly at his wife finishing with a kiss.
"Why thank you, Lee!" Rosemary beamed.
"Gee, Mom, can I have your autograph?" Paul grinned.
"Oh, by the way, tomorrow night is the Meet and Greet Town Hall Meeting. Paul, you are going to come with us, so just fair warning, no last-minute crabbiness." Lee warned.
"Do I have to?" Paul pouted.
"Yes, it won't be long," Rosemary confirmed. "Now, how about some of Mrs. Emily's strawberry crisp?"
Over at Dottie's, Henry was enjoying dinner with her. It had been quite a stir going on over at the RCMP office lately. As they were sharing an after-dinner glass of sherry, Henry asked Dottie if she knew what was going on. "I have no idea, but Rosemary said Lee was out of sorts. That's all I know."
"Fiona told me about the impromptu Meet and Greet Town Hall meeting tomorrow. Did she tell you?" Henry asked.
"Yes, and Bill put a poster up on my door window announcing it. I was wondering what the urgency is all about."
"Well, my men know they are to show up. I had to give Nathan a list of my new hires so Fiona will introduce them at the meeting. So far I'm still short a few men." Henry hadn't a clue how much oil they'd strike, but the rig was working day and night still pumping more oil. Then a soft smile drew across his face and he sat back settling in his chair.
"A penny for your thoughts Henry." Dottie inquired.
"Just wishful thinking that's all. I wish Christopher would come for a visit. I know he's in love with Rachel, Lee's niece, and is with her in Washington State. I sure do miss him, Dottie." Henry sighed.
"Why don't you give him a call? Let him know that you're thinking about him. I'm sure he misses you too. Perhaps he'll come to see you." Dottie suggested.
"Yes, I will dear, I will." Henry nodded.
As Bill was leaving Billees with the dinner crowd gone, he talked to Sam and Maggie about the meeting for tomorrow night and suggested they just have drinks again but no food. "So, you'll have an easy short night." he smiled.
Sam stopped Bill before he left, "Bill, Maggie, and I have a request."
Bill was all ears, motioning to them to all sit down at a table together. Sam and Maggie were quite excited to tell him their ideas. "Bill, as you know, there are several of us who are looking for something new and fun. Matthew, Mark, Rosaleen, Katie, Luke, John, Maggie, and I are interested in young adult activities," Sam began, "and there's bound to be more our age coming to town now to work."
"So," Maggie joined in, "we were hoping to use Billees for some new entertainment. Darts and cards are fun, but dancing is the latest rage and it's popping up everywhere."
"Also, there are moving pictures that we can show here like was hosted once before when Lee surprised Rosemary. She told us all about it." Sam added. "From what she said, everyone enjoyed it."
"All right," Bill pondered, "you two these are both good ideas and I like them. Do you have any thoughts on how this would fit into our schedule?" Bill looked at both of them for answers.
It was then that they told Bill that yes indeed they had ideas. Bill realized that clearly, the group of them had already been talking among themselves as to how to proceed. Maggie and Sam rattled off their ambitions excitedly.
"Sounds good, let me think about this. I'll let you know tomorrow. Now, have a good night." Bill ushered them to the door as Sam was walking Maggie home and Bill went to visit Molly.
Meanwhile, the Grants were finishing up dinner. Nathan complimented his Ma on her cooking as usual. "No one makes Swiss steak and gravy over mashed potatoes like you do Ma, it just can't be beaten." Allie and Dee nodded.
"Dad, you should see Penny! I'm teaching her to trot around in a circle. It's called lunging and she's listening to me really well. Mr. Peterson thinks we're definitely a good team!" Allie beamed.
"I knew you would be. You are making me proud Allie girl!" Nathan crowed.
Dee filled Nathan in on the plans for the summer Bible school with Allie helping play guitar and Emily making desserts for the end of the week potluck dinner.
Nathan was sitting there smiling and taking it all in. His family meant everything to him. As he listened to his ladies he said a quiet prayer to keep them all safe. With a little one on the way, he knew he was a blessed man.
