As Inuyasha charged forward, Sango did two things: she seized the hilt of her sword in preparation to do battle, and she did what she could to accept that her world was about to be upended all over again. She didn't always see eye to eye with Inuyasha, and he was not always the kindest or most thoughtful person, but he was a strong and loyal companion, one who had a good heart in his own way. She liked him and did not want him to die, even though there was almost no chance she could do anything to save him.
In the instant before Inuyasha reached Kaijinbou and would have engaged Toukijin, Toutousai's bull plummeted out of the sky to land between the two fighters. Sango was so startled by the sudden appearance that she almost stumbled; Miroku appeared at her side, tugging her away from the battle to a spot where they could watch without getting caught up in whatever was about to happen.
"Tessaiga is fixed?" the monk asked.
Sango had to turn back to look; she had not noticed at first, but a closer look revealed that Toutousai had indeed brought the Tessaiga back. Relief flooded through her as she realized he must have finished the repair ahead of schedule. With the Tessaiga, Inuyasha would at least have a chance to defend himself.
As the dust settled, Toutousai looked around as if in complete confusion. He even looked surprised when his gaze fell on Inuyasha and the others.
"I was wondering what all the noise was," he said. "Guess I should've known."
Grabbing the Tessaiga, Inuyasha snapped, "You're late!"
Myouga's voice became audible, "Inuyasha-sama, don't be hasty. While you're in human form, the Tessaiga can't transform!"
It was a dire reminder, and the last thing any of them wanted to hear. On any other night, Inuyasha and the Tessaiga would make short work of a foe like Kaijinbou. But on this night, when Inuyasha could not access the true power of his sword, its return might not be enough to make a difference.
Sango's mind raced, but she had to admit… she had no idea how they were going to get out of this in one piece.
