Authoress Notes: I wanted to contribute this because, well, I haven't written a fic in this fandom for a while, so I kind of miss it. I did this for a writing project, and the title is borrowed from Final Fantasy VII's own On The Way To A Smile. The scenario was inspired by rdsullivan's work, Waiting for You, so I hope she doesn't mind. Anyway, please enjoy.
Disclaimer: I don't own anything related to Xenosaga.
Pairing: Implied chaos x KOS-MOS.
Plot/Summary: The start of a relationship always begins with a smile…

If I could make you smile…
He knew it was a wishful thought, a romantic stray – in more ways than one – and a fantasy that he knew would never come true. Even as he sat there in his seat by the window, the train whizzing past the night life of the world, he could not help but feel a great wave of longing lingering in his chest.
I've fallen for someone who is not even real…The tanned-skinned man glanced at the cerulean-haired android that wordlessly sat next to him. She was made to be a woman, with her alabaster skin, pink lips, soft features and the length of her sky-colored hair. However, the cold, icy look in her ruby-red eyes suggested otherwise of her pseudo human features. She was an android; dubbed KOS-MOS by the system she adheres to – Kosmos Obey Strategic Multiple Operation Systems – was comprised only of metal parts and man-made fabrications. Thus, she would also be unable to feel.
The platinum-haired man named chaos was slightly saddened at the thought. A relationship with the ever-so stoic android would never work, and would completely be one-sided. It was, in a sense, wrong of him to feel this way towards a thing, a product constructed from the workings of man, that knew only combat and would defer to logic or the will of her creator.
But he knew… knew within the depths of his subconscious that she had a soul of her own, hidden away as a black box that could open only when the CEO of the Industries she belonged to would allow it. He frowned, but turned his attention back to the window.
I could love her so much that it'd kill me… Yet, she would not feel it, or return it as much as I have. But… he thought sadly.
Unconsciously, chaos' hand moved to intertwine with hers, causing lifeless ruby eyes to center themselves upon him. KOS-MOS stared at him before he turned to face her with a wide, yet melancholic smile. A blink, and strangely enough, a small quirk of her lips caught his attention, and a spark of hope fluttered in his heart.
It's a start… Even if I have to do anything in my power – maybe even embarrass myself a million times – I'd do it. To see her smile… And be by her side…
Till death parts us once again.
