The Letter

Part V

The day had started out as normally as possible for her given she was now about 28 weeks pregnant. She had gained quite a bit more weight with this second child than with her little Cameron. Her back was killing her like it was on fire and her feet had swollen up to about four times their normal size. She felt like a walking whale.

Per the usual, what made it even worse was just how stunning Sam Morgan looked every time she saw her. In the park, at Kelly's, on the pier, and here at the hospital like right now. Sam was almost just as pregnant as she but of course, she was jus glowing. Her raven hair looked even more shiny and luxurious as it fell in curls down her shoulders. She didn't have one blemish on her tanned skin but the smile on her face was what hurt the most and what made her go from beautiful to stop and stare stunning.

Yes, Sam had taken just as well to pregnancy as she had the last time. Back then, Elizabeth had not hated her or been jealous of everything she was but especially, who she had holding her hand through every step of the pregnancy. She was glowing even brighter right now and not just due to the pregnancy, it was because of something Jason had whispered to her.

The two were waiting for the elevator. Even doing something as simple as getting an elevator, the pair showed how close and connected they were to each other. Jason had his arm slung over the back of Sam's small shoulders in a show of protection and possession, as if to say that no one dare try to take her from him by any means. Sam, for her part, had her arm wrapped around his back and she casually had her hand tucked in the back pocket of Jason's jeans.

The two had just come from an appointment with Dr. Lee. As the elevator finally opened, Jason and Sam walked inside which was when they turned around and Elizabeth saw Sam's growing baby bump.

It was small, round like a basketball and the only part of her that showed she was pregnant. Of course, while she looked and felt like a freaking house, Sam was one of those lucky women. She had put on some weight but unless you were looking at her in profile or at her directly, her nearly perfectly round baby, small bump wasn't noticeable. You wouldn't be able to tell she was pregnant otherwise.

Elizabeth glared daggers at Sam Morgan with envy. For so many reasons, one being that it was supposed to be she that donned Jason's name, and Jasons's grandmother's ring should be on her finger. She should be the one that was Emily's sister-in-law. They were best friends but Emily was getting awfully close with Sam. She should be the one that Monica so obviously loved like her own daughter. She should be the one that Edward was proud to have as a part of the family. It all should be her.

For another, Elizabeth had been only moments away from making Jason hers, finally. After years of wanting him so badly that it sometimes drove her crazy. It was perfect when that black out hit and she'd caught Lucky with Maxie. Elizabeth finally had the perfect out and sob story. She'd thought she'd show up, cry on his shoulder, then start to remind him of the good times that they had had together.

The time before Courtney came in and stolen Jason right out from under noise. Despite, the argument they'd had about Jason's work when he'd faked Sonny's death but hadn't, Elizabeth had thought things would work out. If it hadn't been for Courtney, she knows they would've worked things out.

In her heart of hearts, Elizabeth knew that she and Jason were supposed to be together.

When Sam came along was when she saw things had begun to change. The way that Jason looked at her or the smile that he just couldn't keep off of his face whenever she looked at him. Sam made him laugh, too. Something neither she nor Courtney had been able to do.

Jason acted like he had finally found his reason for living, for surviving the accident, and that his own life's purpose was to be with Sam McCall. Before her, Jason was just going through the motions. He did his job. He did it well. He went home by himself, went to bed, and woke up only to do the same thing all over again. There wasn't any real meaning to his life. Elizabeth had wanted so badly to be that meaning, that purpose. However, just like Robin before her and Courtney after her, none of them gave Jason that something special.

However, Elizabeth had gotten lucky that Alexis had guilted Jason into letting Sam go for her own safety. It had been an opportunity she wasn't going to let pass her by again. It was her time to be with Jason, finally. She'd showed up at the penthouse constantly, at Kelly's, on the pier, and had even stopped by Sonny's place a time or two. All in her effort to get Jason t let down his guard, let her into his private life under the guise of needing a friend.

That had all been a bust because it was the same night she went to put her plan into action, Jason had decided he couldn't live without Sam anymore.

Now, she had yet another reason to be jealous of Sam and frankly, hate her guts. She wasn't supposed to be able to call the penthouse her home while Elizabeth needed an invitation to get inside. She should be the one pregnant with Jason's child, not pregnant by Lucky. The ring on Jason's finger should be from her as a sign to the world that he was taken by her. It should all be her instead of Sam.

Elizabeth watched the elevator doors closed on the husband and wife before she went straight to the nearest computer then entered her password. She brought up the file for Mrs. Sam Morgan. God, she hated having to type in that last name.

She read that baby was in perfect health as was Sam. It said that the bullet hadn't caused as many complications as they'd predicted, neither had her previous miscarriage. Things were healing rather well. The notes went onto talk about what the parents were doing to help things.

The mother had been taking care of herself by doing light exercise, prenatal yoga, and eating exactly what she should. It said the husband was being extremely supportive and involved in the pregnancy. It said he was more well read on the subject than some of the interns. Although, the notes said the parents didn't want to know the sex of their child, it was noted in the chart that they were having a boy.

Elizabeth was so engrossed in reading the file about Jason and Sam, just like she did after every one of their appointment, that she'd failed to notice that her luck was about to take another turn for the worse.

"Nurse Webber, that's not confidential file of my son and daughter-in-law's pregnancy that you're not authorized to access, is it?"

She felt the dread sweep into her veins as she slowly turned around and saw Dr. Monica Quartermaine. The older woman had her hands stuffed into the pockets of her white coat, outwardly and to any passerby, she seemed completely calm and collected.

However, if one took a close look, the anger boiling under the surface was obvious, and her facial features were hard. What scared Elizabeth most, though, was the deadly glare Monica was giving her which sent chills down her spine and the hair on the back of her neck stand on end.

"I think we need to have a talk in my office," Dr. Quartermaine said, "Right now."

Jason and Sam were sitting on the bench on the pier. There was still a chill in the air but was getting warmer each day. This day was particularly beautiful with a bright sun and a cloudless, blue sky.

Sam and Jason had just come from their latest doctor's appointment where they got to listen to their baby's heartbeat and get an updated sonogram. Listening to the heartbeat was sweetest sound in the world to both parents to be, they were riding high as they cuddled together.

Jason had his arm on the back of the bench with his hand, leisurely threading his fingers through his wife's soft, silky, long locks. It was addictive to him, once he got start he found it very hard to stop. He could hardly process how blessed he was to have everything that he'd always dreamed when almost a year ago, Sam had nearly lost her life then once she survived, he'd lost her anyway.

Thankfully, Sam had been able to forgive him for his stupidity. Now, Sam was his wife and even more amazingly, they were having a baby. The one thing that they'd wanted to have together since before they were even together. Plus, Dr. Lee said things were going extremely well. Everything was on track, and there was no reason to think that Sam wouldn't carry to term and deliver a healthy baby.

Sam and Jason were enjoying the afternoon so much, they didn't notice the older lady approach them until she was right next to the bench.

"My, my, isn't this quite the coincidence," She said. "We've met before. As a mater of fact, at this very spot, don't you remember?"

Jason and Sam looked at each other than back at the lady. It wasn't coming to either one's mind until the woman spoke again.

"I see, young lady, that you didn't forget your ring on the kitchen counter today."

Suddenly, it hit Sam that this was the older woman who'd judged her for having a baby without giving it a father. Just as she'd felt like a totally incompetent mother for not giving her baby a traditional family, Jason had rescued her by pretending to be her husband.

"Ah, yeah, I do remember now. You were out for a walk with your grandchild." Sam said then interlaced her fingers with Jason, who really was her husband now. Although, now that she actually had his ring, she never took it off for anything. She vowed to wear it for the rest of her life which she intended on doing.

"Yes, and I just realized I forgot my manners last time, I'm Ida Wilkins." She said the nodded in greeting.

Sam nodded and smiled then placed her hand over her upper chest before she said, "I'm Sam Morgan."

Jason hadn't said anything yet so Sam then motioned with her hand toward him.

"And this is my husband, Jason."

Ida the pointed out Sam's baby bump that was protruding from the navy blue loose fitting sweater. "And I see you're adding another addition to your family. How is your other little one, a little girl, if I recall correctly."

Instant sadness hit Sam like a tidal wave as it did every time her daughter was mentioned. Jason, as always completely in tune with her, squeezed their entwined hands, and took control of the conversation.

"Our daughter is peaceful." Jason said, "I don't mean to be rude, Mrs. Wilkins but our doctor recommended bed rest for my wife, so I'm going to follow doctor's orders and take her home to rest."

"Well, of course. It was nice running into you again." Ida said, "I wish you both all the happiness in the world. Bye now."

She walked off, leaving Jason and Sam on the bench, alone. Sam turned her head to Jason then pulled him in for a sweet, soft kiss of gratitude.

"Thank you."

Jason gave her the same look of wonderment that he had the first time they'd encountered that lady. It had been one of the moments when she knew she was falling hopelessly in love with him. She also remembered she thought it wouldn't be so bad to be married to him. She was absolutely right about both. Sam took one hand and ran it over his face, stroking his cheek then she pushed her fingers into his hair to which Jason instantly responded.

He closed his eyes, leaned into her touch, then said, "You don't need to thank me. That woman hasn't changed. She sticks her nose into other's business... she just didn't know."

Sam sighed, "Yeah but just like last time, you're rescued me from her. You're still rescuing me even after all these years."

"Well, it's really simple. You're my life. I have to save you. Otherwise, I don't have anything because you and our baby are everything to me." Jason smiled.

"Such a sweet talker. Even so, every hero deserves to be celebrated."

Sam stood up. Jason followed as she led him up the pier toward their apartment building with a mischievous smirk on her face that he knew very well. One that he absolutely loved which is why he picked up the pace, anxious to get his wife into the privacy of their home where no one could interrupt them
