The Letter

The tension in the air was palpable. She sat across from Monica who had a stern look on her face. Elizabeth sat on the edge of her seat. She didn't know what her punishment would be for violating the confidential records of Jason and Sam. Plus, it wasn't like it was just any patient for Monica; it was her son and daughter in law.

So Elizabeth had no idea what Monica was thinking.

She soon found out.

"Do you know that the files of Dr. Lee are confidential and only viewed by the people in her office?"

Elizabeth nodded. "Yes, ma'am, I do."

Monica's face took on hard look, "So tell me why you were not only looking at confidential files but my son and daughter-in-law's files?

Elizabeth looked down at her hands and decided at least the partial truth would be the best idea.

"I don't have an adequate explanation for that, Dr. Quartermaine."

Monica leaned back in her chair and started swinging it from side to side. "I think I can hazard a guess. You are regretting blowing your chance to be with Jason, am I close?'

Elizabeth stayed silent.

"Yeah, that's it. You can't stand that Jason found and married a woman he loves; now they're having a baby and you were checking up on them. That's an ethical violation of the highest order." Monica said.

Elizabeth felt the panic build in her. "Please, don't fire me. I have a kid to look after… I need this job."

"Oh, Elizabeth, I'm not firing you at least not yet, anyway. Right now, I'm just suspending you without pay. However, you've violated the ethics of this hospital which I hold in the highest regard and it is the ethics of our staff as well as their discretion and patient doctor confidentiality. So as such, there will be an inquest held to determine what your reprimand should be for your actions."

Elizabeth hung her head in shame but only at being caught. She should have been more careful. She should have been more aware of her surroundings. She should have been more aware that she wasn't alone.

"Dr. Quartermaine, are you going to tell Jason and Sam?"

"Elizabeth, you know I have to tell them. More over, I think they ought to know you've been snooping in their confidential file that you shouldn't be looking at all. Now, I want you to collect your things. Go home.

Elizabeth stood then was stopped by Monica's voice just as her hand reached the door handle.

"He's married, Elizabeth. Whatever you think you have with him is long over. Leave him at peace with his wife."

Jason was furious when his mother told him what Elizabeth had done but Sam wasn't nearly as upset by it.

"How can you take this so lightly?"

"Because it's obvious why she did it."

"Care to enlighten me, then?"

"Oh, come on, Jason. You know that night you told me Elizabeth showed up here upset, her mind was on much more than finding friendly shoulder to cry on but she didn't get that and now she's jealous because I have you and she doesn't."

Jason all of sudden ran out of energy and sat down next to his wife. She put her fingers on the nape of his neck. She ran her hands up and down in a soothing manner. Sam placed her other hand on his cheek and turned him toward her.

"So what if she looks at our file?" Sam asked, "All she going to find is our happiness and healthy baby. Trust me when I say that is the worst punishment she's going to get."

Jason put his head on her shoulder.

He laced his fingers through hers and looked at her wedding ring. Still not being able to believe this incredible woman had chosen him.

"I love you, you know that, right?"

"I love you too, you know that right?" Sam said, "So let's just forget about Elizabeth Webber and go upstairs."

Jason got up immediately then he bent down and scooped Sam up into his arms.

She laughed as they bounded up the stairs to the bedroom with everything else forgotten completely.
