The Letter
Part VIII

To say that Elizabeth was surprised beyond belief to see Jason at her door would be a complete understatement of the amount of shock she felt at the moment.
In the minute it took her to collect her wits about her, she gave him the once over. He was looking as stoically handsome as he ever had since she'd first laid eyes on him. Jason was dressed in his signature black leather jacket, black shirt and jeans, and black boots.
Black never looked as good to her as it did when he donned it.
Finally, she was able to speak properly, her nerves shined through as she fumbled through her simple sentence, "Jason I, uh, I wasn't expecting to see you. You should've told me you were coming, I look a mess."
Instead of doing what he normally would've because it was so very him to dispute such a claim but it was also, polite and Jason, when not being stoic and unreadable, had surprisingly good manners. Maybe it was one of the few lasting parts of him that remained from how he'd been raised with the Quartermaines.
Jason' stare was steely which made a shiver go up her spine, "This isn't a social call. Elizabeth."
Without being invited, he pushed passed her into her living room which was strewn with the remnants of her wallowing in her pity party over being husbandless, pregnant, and now, she was jobless to boot.
She closed the door, deep in her heart she knew what had brought him there but she could try to delay the inevitable, "Could I get you anything, something to drink, a water or soda, I made a pitcher of lemonade yesterday—"
Jason turned toward her, his gaze even harder now, his jaw set, and the anger was rolling off of him in waves.
"Why did you stop by then?" Elizabeth said as she closed her sweater around her body to ward off the chill that had suddenly taken over the room.
They'd always been friends, maybe he would be that hard on her given their extensive history.
"I want to know what the hell you were doing invading mine and my wife's privacy as well as our medical confidentiality.? We weren't your patients, you don't work for Dr. Meadows, and had no right to read our medical information. What the hell would make you do something that disrespectful?"
His fight ignited something in her and suddenly she was spilling her guts out, "Why? Because it should be me who's having your baby, Jason! We spent the entire last summer get closer and closer, you'd ended things with that con artist—"
"Don't talk about my wife like that!"
"But that's what she is Jason and she's conned you into marrying her, giving her your name, and giving her the baby that should've been ours because we're supposed to be together, Jason, why is it so hard for you to see that I'm the one meant for you!'
Jason's face took on a fixture of shock and confusion.
"Elizabeth, whatever gave you that idea? The entire time we spent together last summer, you knew I was miserable and in agony without the love of my life, which is Sam, by the way. Not you, we're only friends. We were very good friends."
Elizabeth marched up to him and started pointing him in the chest, "There's more to us than that and you know it. We have never been just friends, we were something and I made a big mistake by sleeping with Zander because if I hadn't we'd be married with our own kids by now because we loved each other.."
Jason seemed even more confused now, "You really think we'd be married with kids right now if not for you sleeping with Zander? You sleeping with him had nothing to do with why we went wrong and until this very moment, I thought you knew that."
"No, we're perfect for each other. We're meant for each other—"
Jason shook his head, "No, Elizabeth, we're not because I liked you but I have never been in love with you like Robin, Courtney, or Sam, those were real relationships. What you and I had was at most, a fling but it was really just a lot of flirting and a few make outs. There's nothing special to us. You even said it yourself when you walked out my penthouse, you were into the version of me that you imagined in your head not the man I really am, and we want totally different things out of life. That's why we never had a real relationship."
Elizabeth had tears well up in her eyes as he went on more and more so by the time he was done, she had tears streaking trails down her cheeks.
She peered up at him through her water filled eyes, "I love you, Jason. I always have, and I've tried really hard to stop but I want us to have our chance, I want us to have our time to really be together because I know we'd be wonderful. If you'd only give us a chance."
Elizabeth put her hands on his chest which he immediately took by the wrists, rather roughly, and took them off him then his voice took on a hard tone as he stared directly in her eyes, "Don't ever lay you hands on me, Elizabeth, if for no other reason than I'm a married man and my wife is the only woman allowed to touch me."
He held onto for a moment longer, allowing the silence to get his point across, then he dropped them before he walked around Elizabeth, who was now openly sobbing but before he reached the door, he turned around, "I guess I know now why you looking at my wife and I's medical file. You're a jealous, vindictive, petty woman who needs to stay out of our life if you know what's best for your own well being."
Jason then opened the door and slammed it shut behind him, as Elizabeth let the last few minutes wash over her, she fell to floor in a crying heap.
She'd really lost him for good this time.

When he'd gotten home, Jason had told Sam the entire story of his visit to Elizabeth's and by the end, she was in a fit of giggles.
Sam sat on the other edge of the sofa, giggling as hard as she could until after a few moments she could calm down and talk, "So let me get this straight, Elizabeth was snooping into our medical file because she is jealous and actually thinks she should be having your baby because you two are some sort of destined star crossed lovers?"
Jason nodded, "Yeah, I couldn't believe it. I mean, we had a little something but it wasn't anything serious, we barely fooled around. It never went beyond any sort of kissing, we dated officially for a total of three days when she left because she was pissed I didn't tell her about Sonny faking his death."
Sam sighed, and rested her hand on top if his arm that was resting on the back of the sofa, she fiddled with his wedding ring like she'd grown accustomed to since placing it on his finger. She loved seeing his ring on his finger, a symbol of their love, and a sign to the world and everyone including Elizabeth that Jason was taken, by her.
"I always had a feeling that chick was a bit off but I didn't know she was Fatal Attraction level crazy. Be weary of anything soup you eat, Jason, she might make you a nice rabbit stew next to show you her love." Sam joked.
Jason cracked a smile for the first time since getting home, "Oh, you think this is funny?"
Sam nodded, "A little but mostly, it's pathetic."
"Whatever, I don't want to talk about her anymore. Let's talk about something else. Can I get you anything?"
Since her last doctor's visit, Dr. Meadows had suggest she take it as easy as possible which had translated to Jason as an order to wait on her every whim.
"No, I just want to cuddle in your arms as we watch a movie." Sam said as she moved across the couch into his waiting arms which he wrapped around her body, and placed his hand on her rapidly growing baby bump. Sam placed her head against his chest so she could hear his heart beat.
She was fast asleep halfway through the movie.
