The Weight of Your Choice
by Chibimono Akuno

Zoro never expected the final battle to be like this, on the island of Raftel. Luffy was being pressed to the edge of a cliff, but the fight was between Zoro and the hawk-eyed man himself.

With every advance from the younger swordsman, Mihawk would take a step back, and Luffy behind him would have to take a step back, as well. The battle was one of dignity, and Luffy knew better than to disturb it, but his own standing room was quickly vanishing.

Zoro was giving it his all, only to realize his own skills were being played with as Luffy's final step faultered, no ground to walk on, and he pitched over the edge.

Mihawk was trying to tell him something in that battle. Your own life or his? What do you do? It was not until Luffy hit the surface several meters below that Zoro knew what was really at stake. The final blow was delivered, as Zoro brushed past Mihawk to dive for his fallen captain.

The pain was unbelievable; who would have ever thought the reopening of an old wound would be so horrible? But breaking the surface of the ocean only told Zoro that the wound, the final memory of Mihawk, was worse than he original thought. Even with a second chance, in the end he was still not enough... but with his own dream lost, he could not let others lose their own.

He had just enough strength to reach his captain, and just enough breath to press his lips to the other's to give life to his lungs. And as Zoro broke the surface with Luffy in his arms, he could only hope that his dead body would be enough to float Luffy to the nearby shore.
